Your comments: TTC fare hike

November 17th, 2009

The TTC will vote on a proposed fare hike, Tuesday. There are reports that students in post-secondary education may receive a break on the price of a Metropass. Would you be in favour of that?

Share your stories, vent your frustrations and have them published here on 680News.com.

  1. PATRICK MORELLI Says:

YES, AND SO SHOULD HIGHSCHOOL STUDENTS… ANYONE GOING TO SCHOOL FOR THAT MATTER

  2. Roman Michalko Says:

When the LCBO, the Beer Store and the pubs tell us that post-secondary students are NOT frequenting these establishments then I may respond in favour of the TTC proposal.

  3. Gregory Wickramasinghe Says:

College Students are already getting the Metropass at a discounted price. What about those V.I.P Passes issued at Colleges such as George Brown? University Students should have the same privileges as well.

  4. Michelle Says:

    @ Roman Michalko

Although it is about how you spend your money, the other problem is how much of it you have to spend in the first place. The fact of the matter is that even if you work 40 hours at a dollar above minimum wage, you still would not be able to pay for all of tuition alone–excluding incidental fees, transit costs, living expenses and miscellaneous purchases. A recession-style budget is not new to post-secondary students.

Granted, like you said, there are people who choose to spend unwisely–that still doesn’t mean that those who are struggling should suffer for their poor decision-making. No sense in punishing the good (because likely in this case, the people who can afford the booze don’t need to care about transit hikes to begin with).

  5. Linda Says:

The Gov. complains that the overloaded highways are costing billions of dollars because it slows down production. They have suggested that our taxes be raised to conteract this situation. If the GO train and the TTC were FREE than the highways would be less congested (Billions of $ would be saved) and all the transit users (new ones and old ones) would be happy. A WIN WIN situation. The Government only seems to know how to increase the tax payers costs when they get themselves into debt. The Gov. takes the least route of resistance. Shame on them!!!!

  6. JJ Says:

This is a bunch of bull!

  7. Bill MacLean Says:

I noticed this morning that you said people were “hoarding” tokens… as if this were something evil and underhanded. In any other situation when the public knew in advance of a price increase of a particular commodity they might be said to be “stocking up.” What makes the TTC different from say gas, or bread, or any other supply?

Apart from that, it’s a shame that the TTC is in the position that it has to charge the few who still use it more to do so.

  8. Ken Bowers Says:

If you want to subsidize students, focus on tuition support, not funding them by underfunding the TTC through lower market prices. The TTC should reflect the cost of the TTC, else we will see rates fares on other TTC users.

  9. LJ Says:

When I was a student at U of T, I would have loved a discount. It would have made my commute much cheaper.

When you are paying a minimum of $5000/year for tuition, plus the cost of books and supplies, $126 more per month is a scary thought.

To Roman: So, because students need to relax a bit and go out for a few drinks, they shouldn’t be allowed a discount on a Metropass? Should they just stop spending any money on things that are not complete necessities??? Also, remember that the legal drinking age is 19…many students entering post-secondary education are 17.

To Patrick: High school students already get discounts.

  10. Nik Says:

While I don’t have a problem with giving students a break, what about the rest of us? I may not be a student but I still struggle from paycheck to paycheck. Where are the breaks for everyone else?
Maybe the TTC could find someone who knows how to run the books properly instead of continually raising fares because they can’t seem to figure out how to manage their money.

  11. From a Seniors viewpoint Says:

As a Senior on a Low Income I would appreciate not having to deal with another increase that is not afforded by me as I use Wheel Trans because of severe health mobility. I hear from other Seniors who do not renew their prescrtions because they can’t afford them but need to get out of the house or depession sets in. The Government Pensions have not been keeping up with inflation and some Seniors are cutting down on healthy foods as they have not got enough to live on. Everything is either going up or taxed. Enough is enough. Cut down on unnecessary staff or greedy employees and give the paying riders a break. I myself will not be able to be paying more for tickets. I’m sure I’m not the only one. Please don’t do this to your riders.

  12. Marty Hayman Says:

I think the working public need a break. A solution is start drive cars in to the city for a month and force down ridership on TTC down. They will then get the message load and clear.

Also it is not the time to be increase but holding the line.

  13. LULAG06 Says:

Yes, students should be given a break but where is the break for single parents on one income who HAVE to take transit to get to work. It was bad enough that they took away our free parking and have had to pay out an additional $6.00 per day.

  14. Khanak Says:

I think fare hike is the worst ever thing.
The consequences is that people will drive cars and our great 401 as usual will have more accidents.
And city will be a mess.
Well if tha’ts what they want then…
In fact, they should subsidize the TTCfares for regular commuters.

  15. kaseyjones Says:

the student monthly passes are currently at $91.25…according to the Sun, it will go up to $104.00 when this fare hike gets approved…is this really protecting students?

  16. Anastasia Says:

How about the TTC save money by LOWERING the budgeted salary amount????? i once had this one bus driver bragging to me about how he makes six figures…for driving a bus??? come on!

  17. WLS Says:

All levels of Gov’t have downloaded user fees on each of us over the past several years. This is no different. If you want to ride it you must pay for it. I personnaly don’t use the TTC but have been contributing to its existance through fuel purchases at the pump and through the many other taxes imposed on ALL of us. I pay for my car, insurance, maintenance and repairs, so please don’t ask us for more contributions if this hike does not pass. You don’t see me asking for a hand out to support my means of transportation so why should you?

  18. Rudy Says:

In the past 2 years the cost of the TTC Metropass has gone up by 30%. Yet the government is trying to convince us that the Inflation rate is only 1%.
Obviously, their insistence that the Inflation rate is low is strictly for the purpose of preventing workers from asking for wage increases.
Unlike City Councillors who can vote themselves hefty wage increases, most of us have to be content with yearly wage increases of no more than 2%.
Also, how about those TTC fare collectors who make yearly wages of $100,000 and more – this is why TTC fares are rising so quickly.

  19. Jess Says:

Between the TTC and the HST, I won’t ever be able to get ahead. How can there be millions of Torontonians using the TTC each and every day and there’s still never enough money? There should be some investigation and evaluation on the jobs that are actually required because I always see people walking very slowly in those burgundy jackets. No one working at the TTC ever seems to be in a hurry. There are thousands of people worried about their jobs during the recession except those people that work under the protection of the TTC. This is all getting to be a little ridiculous.

  20. Amartila Says:

dont know when this will stop.
are they going to continue the hiking up and stop at 5$ or what.
    is this what they plan.
    Its Insane.
They r creating problems for themsleves only.
    and for us

  21. Joey Licskai Says:

hey, when what I heard, or thought I heard on the radio 87% indicated against, I was very disappointed. I rarely feel compelled to write about anything (twice in 55 years), but in this case I was gung ho.
I was glad to see it was a misunderstanding, and most people actually favour this idea. Living outside of TO and in fact the GTA, I regularly hear about the local residents with their hands out looking for provincial subsidy, but outside of TO, there are no school pools, no subsidy for public transit, in fact very restricted public transit. In our jurisdications, you get what you pay for, use it, pay for it, so we regularly ask why do they feel entitled to our tax $’s as a subsidy.
I see from other comments, frustration in what the public service is earning, and I hear their pain. Hard to believe someone selling tickets could be worth more (probably double or more) than someone ringing through a large grocery order, but hey, if any of us could score one of those jobs, would we be complaining? Irregardless, some mechanism does need to be in place to evaluate and justify salaries across the board. Sound like another bureaucracy, perhaps, but some sort of rationalization does need to take place. If I were to take transit from my place, I would have to drive 15 minutes (opposite direction) to get to it, and close to an hour to get to where I could walk to work, about 10 minutes. My 45 minute drive, would become closer to 1 1/2 hours. I choose to live where I do, not a city person, but $3.00 seems to me like a bargain compared to gas, vehicle maintenance, parking, etc,…..
I’m not complaining about my costs, they are my choice, but I do think there needs to be a reality check,…public transit is a bargain even if it is overpriced.

  22. Mary Says:

I hope everyone starts ‘carpooling’ this saves money on gas and parking if you consider the cost of 5 people/per month per TTC metropass.

  23. Joe Says:

I think it’s time for us to change our career, and find a job at the TTC. In this wealthy TTC family, you get all kinds of job protection including fare hike to supprot your greed to make a 6 figure salary. And, the good thing is you don’t have work hard to make that much.

  24. samm Says:

Totally disfunctional , moronic City Hall. They do not fight crime. City is run on auto pilot.Taxes are killing us. TTC is slow, filthy, expensive – politicians have no shame. Time for a revolution.

  25. Vasily Says:

TTC is a monomoly which is backed by government. Most users of this dumb system take TTC because they do not have the options to take anything else. An advise to someone who wants to make money – create a new transit system which will use efficient buses and cost less. The system must be reliable. Unlike TTC, which I have to take every day and for the past 3 years, Downsview station buses never show up on time and some never come. TTC employees brake TTC by-law NO.1 by smoking on the property. Shame on corrupted system!

  26. Tex Says:

The TTC should adopt a european model that removes TTC station staff completely and replaces them with on-train ticket reviewers just like GO Train. This would cut a considerable amount of dead weight and salaries so an increase in fares could be staved off for a few more years.

  27. Amanda Says:

In certain European countries seniors travel free on public transportation; yes students should get a discount (colleges already do).

High school students shouldn’t be paying at all if they require public transportation to get to their schools.

It is time we looked at why these services are costing so much instead of putting it back on the riders each time.

  28. Stacey Says:

Where is all the revenue going from the commuter parking lot fees? That’s a lot of money is it not? And why is Bob Kinnear asking for MORE FREE PASSES at today’s council meeting when they are already 100 million short? TTC employees get free rides, cops get free rides, the employees just got a wage increase this year (in a recession) and WE are expected to pay for all this? That union needs to go. It’s a mafia holding our city hostage and it’s pathetic that our city councillors won’t stand up to it. Not a single spine amongst them.

  29. Jon Says:

    Hello.

    1. I think it interesting that talk over the TTC and its operating budget has largely shifted to focusing to adding post-secondary students as an exemption, RATHER than the controversial $450 million sick day bank… I think that issue should be re-addressed.

    2. I think the TTC is a broken system. Its employees EXTREMELY overpaid and the service they provide… well sucks. Drivers OBVIOUSLY take inappropriate breaks, create convoys of buses, take breaks in the MIDDLE of a route.

Yet of all the talk, not once do we hear anything about their wages or the crappy system. Just that A) they need more money and B) they want to expand services to ‘fix the problems’.

Sorry, but if you can’t run the system on the overpaid employees you currently have, don’t pour more money into what will be hiring more overpaid employees (mind you during a recession) to just as bad a job.

  30. Jon Says:

As a further note to how much TTC employees make, review this article from the Canada Post. It says that in 2007, these were their wages:

    Litter picker – $21.11/hour
    Cleaner/janitor (outside workers’ contract) – $19.56/hour
    Garbage collector – $24.14/hour
    First class firefighter – $33.73/hour
Bus/subway driver (with 12 months experience or more) – $26.58/hour
TTC token/cash collector (with 12 months experience or more) – $26.58/hour
    Meter reader – $26.39/hour
    Gas pump operator – $21.79/hour
    Mail car driver – $22.68/hour
    Bylaw officer – $28.67/hour

    http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/toronto/archive/2007/07/26/ttc-token-taker-wage-26-58-hour.aspx

  31. Philip Lim Says:

OK, what’s TTC lame excuse this time? The ridership increased. How come they hike the fare when there ain’t enough rider, now hike the fare where are too many riders!!! They are running a business model that will never breakeven, forget about making money! Do they care? NO. The true reason – MONOPOLY.

  32. K. Bennett Says:

Yes I am in favour. At this difficult when many are loosing their jobs and are still unemployed, a fare hike is not the way to go at the moment. At least wait until the economy is more stable or at least recovered somewhat.

  33. Dan Wong Says:

don’t forget the the Chairman of the TCC is David Miller’s best friend (son or successor), they’re the same kind- collecting money from our hard working people for the union guys’ wages and benefits and say they’re short of money!!!!!! what else can we expect!

  34. Not a Rider Says:

    TTC + CITY OF TORONTO= INCOMPETENCE+BAD MANAGEMENT+CROOKS+UNASHAMEDNESS

  35. Tony Says:

Stop whinning, I don’t see people cry about the price of the iPods
and all the other gagets they bring onto the system. For there dollars that’s still a bargain.

  36. Kom O.N. Senz Says:

Politics 101 folks – why look inward to cut the fat, when we can always raise fares? Applies to transit, taxation, hell everything for that matter. TTC knows you’re going to use its services anyway. The govt knows you’re not going to move out of the municipality/city/country. Who are we kidding? Nothing will happen if we continue to bend over. We need a call to arms – the Tamil Canadians rallied for their people thousands of miles away, yet we can’t lift a finger against organizations that are, comparatively, a short drive away.

It’s a waste of time being angry if your shouts are not heard. Do something about it, or just keep bending over. Boycott the TTC, and not in the same fashion as that sad excuse of a boycott that happened recently. Make them regret that they even considered a fare increase!

  37. Monir Says:

It is time for a alternative transit. My salary did not increase how I am going pay extra fare every month? Media should raise voice against such monopoly game.

  38. JJ Says:

This is all designed to increase profits of car makers as well as to create additional pollution. This is also designed to put additional people in debt or poverty. TTC should be free — starting with student and seniors fares!

Those that can not afford cars should be helped and it would not cost as much as you think. Does Ontario need so many paid politicians who work for special (greedy) interest and never for their people?

Good luck to people that need TTC.

  39. Lois Says:

I am against the suggested monthly pass increase to $126. Why such a high increase? Why do I see 4 buses at a time show up on Bus route 25 Don Mills? Is this so we can pay for extra buses and extra drivers? Please TTC and City of Toronto, please do not approve these rate hikes. Please look into it further and check out what is going on.

    LW

  40. Back to school Says:

I hope my math is right: the union workers are guaranteed with their annual wage increases and benefits, and with the revenue (from transit users) just flat, its just logical for the managers to increase fares to cover the expected deficit. We should compensate our TTC workers well because we dont want them depressed driving unemployed Torontonians! Can’t we just freeze or reduce their wages and benifits? Union leaders speak up please.

I hope TTC adopts York Transit’s partial sub-contracting model. But I will seriously consider to be a student again to get a discount.`

  41. ketan patel Says:

Waht is this it is enough this is the third time they are increse the rate what’s going man
lot of ppl using ttc and then can’t effort the cost of ttc then redused the fare and increse time limit and like every 10 tp 15 or 20 mint but don’t increse the rate.

  42. wasi siddiqui Says:

Today is a very sad day for all the commuters

  43. Sunil Says:

Instead of increasing the efficiency of the system they are preying on the common people. This fare hike can’t be justified. They are lasvishly generous on employee benefits. News of one of its employees earning more than $100,000 a year is just an example.

  44. Arp Says:

TTC needs to cut it’s operating costs by gradually phasing out the unions that cripple it. Unionized labour was popular and necessary during the industrial revolution but not anymore. Secondly they should let that guy out of jail who was caught making tokens in his garage using aluminium strips. It’s clear to me that he has found a way to drastically reduce production costs and still get good market saturatrtion. Anyway the TTC guy was commenting the other day and he contradicted himself. He said, “For every token they sell that doesn’t get used, they are losing money” Firstly if you sold it, you were paid for it. Secondly you didn’t have to use any fuel for that rider cause he wasn’t there. What I really should have done was buy tokens like mad when I was 10 years old. Save them for 30 years and then start using them.

Hording isn’t an issue. Let’s increase ridership by choking off the token supply. Yup there is big union mentality. If I bought gas at station that only let me pump $5.00 at a time I would never go back.

Best thing to do is sell your house or condo in toronto, And move as far away as possible. The combination of Miller and TTC is something that only a GM worker making $78.00 an hour has the ability to deal with. You see $78.00 and hour, plus a $0.25 fare hike equals walkout. Strike for 39 days, cripple the city. Agree to a contract that was never about the money to start with. Work two days with overtime, Cause some how 16 is more that 44. Make back 25% of your lost wages practically overnight. So both 25′s cancel each other out. So in essance, No fare hike, but the rest of us will see a 2% increase in property tax.

  45. Frank Says:

I absolutely agree. Students in this city, and their parents for that matter, are having a hard enough time trying to budget tuition costs and transportation costs. Students and University students are on a very tight budget and this additional cost places undue burden and stress on their limited finances. The TTC apparently has a policy where all their employees get to enjoy “a free ride” into work and back home from work as long as they use the TTC. This is a very unfair situation. The public not only pays salaries…and very good salaries with over-the-top overtime…we also finance TTC employee transportation to and from work. Living in the City of Toronto has become a very expensive endeavor with all the taxation and increasing costs that have been imposed on us by council in recent years and by others who hold the balance of power. Here’s a thought…why not look to reduce some of those 100,000 salaries that the well paid, well-protected union workers earn with their generous overtime pay. It’s absolutely ridiculous that these public service workers, some of whom never even finished high school let alone university, are in a position where they can earn more than a fully educated and qualified professional with graduate degrees. We’ve all lost our sense of balance and justice in this crazy world.

  46. Joan Neely Says:

The TTC must justify why it continually raises the fares. One suggestion is turning some carefully chosen busy roads / highways into toll routes, which would increase funds for public transportation and encourage people to use the TTC as a cheaper alternative. Additionally, while I would appreciate a discount as a student, I would be even happier if the TTC was better able to manage its account so EVERYONE could have a lower fare!

  47. YM Says:

No offense to anyone, its just my personal view. I don’t think that Government really care, lately Insurance Company wants to increase premium and than HST and now TTC wants our hard earned money too. This system is such bloodsucker, and they will keep sucking our blood because we are first world country. We are too educated and over qualified to speak-up or take control of the situation. Just wait and watch after few weeks or months someone else will dump price hike on us. Only thing we can do is work overtime or get a second job so we can generously feed these greedy for the rest of our life.

  48. L. Wasser Says:

Once again Torontonians are being gouged by our politicians — the commissioners of the TTC have jacked up the costs of using the now-aging and overburdened TTC.

So will we all, at election time, vote to oust these same commissioners from office? Will we speak out against them? Will we support candidates for public office in this city that will fight for a better transit system, reasonable fares and cutting-edge smartcard technology? Not likely.

No, we’ll do what we always do – vote for the same lazy politicos. Vote for the same poorly-run transit system that we deserve. And vote for the same union-supporting commissioners that we’ve been voting for over numerous decades. Change will never come as long as we keep these folks in power.

We get what we deserve folks – the crappy service, the filthy stations, the packed-like-sardines streetcars, buses and trains.

Want to make a difference? Look up the names of all of the TTC’s acting commissioners. Then write them all a letter or email informing them you’re going to confront them come election time. And while you’re at it, demand that anyone considering a run for the mayor’s seat be prepared to take on the commission, the unions and the politicos at City Hall and demand real and lasting change.

Otherwise… our TTC will cease to be a system we can rely on at all. And then we’re all in real trouble, folks.

  49. eric barahona Says:

yes the local goverment try to make the people in toronto but if you notice 126.00 a month for metro pass is even expensive than car insurance how they try to convice comunity to used the transit sistem is more expensive than insuran

  50. Edward Says:

An increase in price is commonplace with the TTC, but unfortunately, an increase of customer service is almost unheard of. From personal experience and experience from friends, I often see and hear about very rude TTC staff who doesn’t care about their customers.

Prices have increased, it’s time to increase customer service!

  51. Samm Says:

I am a senior citizen -, these heartless overpaid bastards – Miller & Giambrone – just made tens of thousands of seniors lives’ more miserable. There was NO negotiation with the Union to decrease their salaries or trying to come up with some technical solution to save some money. I hope they all end up in Living Hell

  52. Mark Says:

I am absolutely in favour of a discounted post-secondary student rate for the metropass. However,I think it’s ridiculous that “post-secondary students will only be able to buy the discounted student passes beginning next September” (http://www.cbc.ca/canada/toronto/story/2009/11/17/ttc-fares-increase531.html). Why is it going to take almost a year to include this range of people when the system is already going to be in place to do so by the first week of January?
The heartlessness, and rudeness, of the TTC and its workers, is disgusting. Disgusting.

  53. Will Says:

I don see the point of this fare hike? i mean common, Doesn’t everyone say to us like the mayor and the public say use public transit to not pollute the air?? I am still in high school and i think wow the buses are jammed everyday. The only time its empty is if you get from a subway station on to a bus. I just hope that people still take the bus after this fare hike, but than again who can afford a metro pass that if your in a low minimum wage job half your paycheck in 2 weeks. And no i don’t agree that the post secondary education students even get a discount because you are to tell me that they get it a dollar or two cheaper cause they have books and fees. Trying paying a life style with struggling parents for example and your older brother laid off from a trade job from a union and than lets see if that discount is going to be a big hustle

  54. Bob Owen Says:

Everyone has panicked over getting this vaccine. How do we know what the long term after effects are?? They could be worse than the flu. We have seen this happen in the past.

  55. From a Seniors viewpoint Says:

I can’t get a a straight answer if the serum contains a fish oil base, I am seriously allergic to shellfish and fish to the extent I can die even if an Epi-pen is used, I may not make it to the Hospital in time. I don’t think it’s worth a chance like that. Would you?

  56. OOO Canada Says:

I am ashamed and disappointed of my choice of emigrating in Canada…..
It is so outdated, and so reluctant to change and TTC is one of greatest example.
TTC is a corrupt, inefficient public transportation system that is enjoying the status of monopole, with the government backup and founding support.
What it is more alarming for me is the lack of civic response and the indifference of the elected people that seams to enjoying the same benefits as TTC.
I am so tired of TTC/City hall lies… and for sure I will leave this feudal-communist country to go in my ex communist but at least no feudal country.
Canada is not a country it is just a bunch of tribes: TTC tribe, GM tribe, Hydro Tribe, Garbage Collectors Tribe, GO Tribe, Housing and Developments Tribe, Real-Estate Tribe, and if you are not in one of this tribe you are without protection, all of above will just eat you alive like jackals.
So long faint-hearted, spineless so called Canadians ….
What are you standing for?? What are your values???
