Some definite surprises come out of ‘The Bash’ this past Sunday in what was an overall solid pay-per-view. On a quick side note it has been confirmed that ring announcer Lillian Garcia will be leaving the company at the end of her contract to get married. Lillian has been with the WWE since 1999.
Match 1: ECW Championship Scramble Match- Tommy Dreamer (c) vs. Christian vs. Mark Henry vs. Finlay vs. Jack Swagger
There is a 20 min. time limit with a new participant entering every 3 minutes and the individual who gets the final fall is the champion. Christian and Swagger start things off, while Henry is thankfully the fifth and final entrant. Swagger attacks Finlay’s eye and picks up the first pinfall. Finlay gets his revenge on Jack courtesy of a Celtic Cross for a three count. With just over 2 minutes to go Tommy delivers a DDT on Swagger to take his belt back. The remainder of the battle is a mad dash to get the final pinfall, however, in the end Dreamer retains.
WINNER: Tommy Dreamer
Match 2: Intercontinental Title vs. Mask- Chris Jericho (c) vs. Rey Mysterio
Match of the year candidate right here. The crowd was red hot for this one and were cheering on both Superstars. Me describing it here does not do it justice and is worth the price of the PPV alone. After a terrific back and forth athletic war here’s the finish: Jericho pulls of Mysterio’s mask…but Rey has another one underneath it! The shocked Jericho then falls victim to the 619 and springboard splash to become the new I.C. champion.
WINNER: Rey Mysterio
Match 3: No DQ Match- Dolph Ziggler vs. The Great Khali
Going from the best match to the worst one. Ziggler definitely has potential and can hopefully move away from Khali. Kane makes his run in return and pummels the giant with steel chair shots. Dolph scurries in to grab the pinfall. Looks like we’ll have Kane vs. Khali to look forward to…yikes!
WINNER: Dolph Ziggler
Match 4: Unified Tag Team Championship- Carlito & Primo (c) vs. Ted DiBiase Jr. & Cody Rhodes
A surprise twist as Smackdown GM Teddy Long comes out and announces that the match is now a triple threat with the addition of Edge/Chris Jericho. The end comes for the Colon brothers when Edge spears Carlito out of his boots to capture tag team gold. This Edge/Jericho union could be one of the most entertaining and successful heel tandems since Rated RKO.
WINNERS: Edge & Chris Jericho
Match 5: Women’s Championship- Melina (c) vs. Michelle McCool w/ Alicia Fox
Alicia Fox seemed to be the main focus of the match as she kept distracting Melina and even put McCool’s foot on the bottom rope to save her from being pinned. After knocking Fox off the apron the champ turns right into Michelle’s version of the Styles Clash and we have ourselves a new WWE Women’s Champion.
WINNER: Michelle McCool
Match 6: World Heavyweight Championship- CM Punk (c) vs. Jeff Hardy
The live audience was all into Hardy, which Punk ran with and played the bad guy. These two have some solid in-ring chemistry. At one point Jeff hit the swanton bomb and it looked like he had the champ beat, but the official ruled that Punk’s boot was just under the bottom rope. In a strange turn Punk called the ref over claiming he was poked in the eye and couldn’t see. He then threw a wild kick that hit the official causing a DQ. The world champ can say that he was blinded and still the seed has been planted for a heel turn. Following the bell Hardy snapped and attacked Punk.
WINNER: Jeff Hardy by DQ
Match 7: John Cena vs. The Miz
Miz took it to Cena a little bit early, but my fears came true in that he was essentially buried. After not too long Miz taps out to the STFU.
WINNER: John Cena
Match 8: WWE Championship- 2 out of 3 Falls: Randy Orton (c) vs. Triple H
Interesting booking as the first two matches went by fast. The Game got disqualified by pelting the champion with chair shots, and then was able to even things up 1 - 1 with a Pedigree right after the bell rang again. The third and deciding fall was a Stretcher Match. A good brawl with Rhodes and DiBiase coming near the finish to assist their leader. An Orton low blow allows him to subdue Triple H long enough to push him across the line in the stretcher for the win.
WINNER: Randy Orton
