The 2013 Sprint Cup series cars from the four participating manufacturers can now start being produced after NASCAR issued their final approval.
The new models, which will better resemble the street versions of Chevrolet’s SS, Ford’s Fusion, Toyota’s Camry and Dodge’s Charger, will make their competitive debut next year at Daytona in February following two years of development.
The final approval was based upon results from aerodynamic testing earlier this month, as NASCAR tried to equalize downforce and drag levels for all four different models.
Teams are expected to run them for the first time next month at Martinsville, while further test sessions will take place at Talladega, Texas and Kansas later this year.
“We commend the manufacturers and our team at the R&D centre on all the hard work they’ve put into this new car,” said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR vice president of competition. “With all the designs and surface areas of the car now approved, manufacturers can now move forward with building the components needed to outfit their cars.
“The wind tunnel testing we’ve had with the manufacturers over the past several months has given us the timely and necessary data we needed to come to this confirmation. We believe the new car is going to be a milestone opportunity for our sport, one that our fans will embrace.”
While it remains to be seen which team will lead Dodge’s Cup effort following Penske’s switch to the blue oval brand, Ford Racing Director James Allison said the new models are a response to what NASCAR fans wanted to see on the track.
“This is a monumental moment for the sport, for the fans and for us as a company with our participation in NASCAR,” said Allison. “The fans have clamored for the return of cars that look like cars in their driveways and NASCAR, alongside us as manufacturers, have listened to that request.
“We are very proud of all the hard work and collaboration between NASCAR and the OEMs that was completed with the submission test, and now we are ready to go forward with the new face of NASCAR that is the 2013 Fusion.”
Last week Chevrolet also revealed the new Camaro that the bow-tie brand is set to run in the 2013 Nationwide Series.
It’s SS model has yet to be revealed beyond a carefully camouflaged test mule.
Will looking more like the show room versions re-establish the old bromide: “Win on Sunday, sell on Monday?
Can’t hurt!

Allmendinger tests positive.. again

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012

AJ Allmendinger is in big trouble.

After waiting more than two weeks for his ‘B’ sample to be tested, Allmendinger learned the result was again positive after a test of his “B” sample on Tuesday. Together with the primary ‘A’ sample, that prompted NASCAR to announce it has indefinitely suspended the Penske Racing driver for violating its substance abuse policy.

Allmendinger becomes only the second Sprint Cup Series driver to be indefinitely suspended under NASCAR’s new drug policy. Jeremy Mayfield, the other driver, fought NASCAR’s results in court and has never driven again.

Allmendinger is married to a Toronto girl, a practising chiropractor.

He won the 2006 Toronto Indy during the open wheel era of his career.

The specific substance was not announced by NASCAR, though Allmendinger has said it was for a “stimulant.”

Aegis, the company which conducts NASCAR’s drug testing, performed the test on Allmendinger’s ‘B’ urine sample this morning at its laboratory in Nashville. Allmendinger and a toxicologist of his choosing were expected to be in attendance.

Allmendinger’s business manager, Tara Ragan, said an unspecified stimulant caused results “that were within nanograms of accepted standards.”

“This was not the news we wanted to hear and we will work to get to the source of what may have caused this,” Ragan said. “To that end, we have secured the services of an independent lab to conduct thorough testing on every product within AJ’s home and motor coach to find what might collaborate with his test.”

If Allmendinger is ever to return to NASCAR, he has a long road ahead. The next step is for him to receive a letter from NASCAR outlining a process for reinstatement.

Should Allmendinger agree to the letter, he will be in the “Road to Recovery” program, which is tailored to each individual and implemented by NASCAR’s program administrator.

“We are working closely with NASCAR and Penske Racing to identify the next action steps in this process,” Ragan said. “We continue to be extremely grateful by the breadth and scope of support for AJ from his fans and partners.”

Allmendinger will likely miss the rest of this season and possibly longer. Since he was on a one-year contract to drive Penske’s No. 22 car, his chances of remaining with the team have taken a huge blow.

In a statement, Penske Racing said it was “very disappointed” by the test result.

“We respect NASCAR’s policy and the process they have taken with this matter,” the statement said. “… (Penske) will evaluate its course of action as it pertains to AJ over the coming week.”

Sam Hornish Jr., who subbed for Allmendinger at Daytona and New Hampshire, will again drive the No. 22 car this weekend at Indianapolis and in the following race at Pocono.

Sam will likely stay in the car for good.

IZOD IndyCar Series:

Last Race: Sunday July 22nd: 8th Annual Edmonton Indy: Montreal’s Alex Tagliani took the lead on the opening lap and led 3 quarters of the distance. But with 23 laps to go, Penske’s Helio
Castroneves forced his hand, pitting for fresh “reds” to chase down Tag! Tagliani pitted, but Helio passed him just as he emerged from the pit, and Castroneves then held off Takuma Sato for his 2nd win of the season. Sato 2nd, Will Power 3rd. Tag was 5th. James Hinchcliffe missed the set up and booted some corners to finish 12th. It was the first caution-free race of the season!

Formula One World Driving Championship:

Last Race: Sunday July 22nd, German Grand Prix, Hockenheim: Fernando Alonso extended his points lead holding off Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button for his 3rd win of the season.  Alonso never had a huge lead in his Ferrari, but just enough to keep the Red Bulls and McLarens behind him.  He got some help with Vettel and Button battling each other back there, too busy to catch Fernando!  Nice distraction!

F-1 Points: Drivers: Alonso leads Webber, who was 8th at Hockenheim by 31. Constructors:
Red Bull leads Ferrari by 61.

Next Race: Sunday July 29th, Hungarian Grand Prix, Budapest. Last year’s winner: Jenson Button.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series:

Next Race: Sunday July 29, Brickyard 400, Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Last year’s winner: Paul Menard.

Last Race: Sunday July 15th, New Hampshire: Denny Hamlin was dominating, but a communication gaff with his crew chief Darien Grubb likely cost him the race. Denny wanted a quick 2-tires on
his last pit stop, but Grubb thought he meant 4 and the extra seconds handed the lead to Kasey Kahne, who out-legged Hamlin to the checkers. Kahne’s 2nd win of the season, and a step closer to a spot in the Chase. He leads the ‘wildcard’ standings, which give drivers with victories ranked between 10th and 20th in the points a place in the play-off.

Cup Points: Matt Kenseth ( 13th ) leads Earnhardt Junior ( 4th ) by 16.
