The opponents to the Speedway and the developers could not come to agreement today on a date to start the actual OMB hearing to get approval to build CMS in Fort Erie, so dragging this thing out yet again, they will conduct a conference call next month ( earliest the OMB has available ) to decide what date they can work out.
It will be a four week hearing that could be done in two parts. God bless Ontario!
Since this is a public hearing, this is the process, as frustrating as it is.
They could start as early as May, or perhaps June, or yes, even the fall.
Do I think the opponents ( appellants ) are using the system to drag this out? Yes I do, but there’s nothing we can do to stop them. It’s a public hearing.
But understand this: The clock is now ticking for those opposed to the Speedway to come up with hard and fast evidence it WILL be too LOUD and it WILL create pollution.
To simply state they THINK it will be so is not going to fly with the OMB.
But the appellants can’t delay the process again once a date for the hearing is set.
CMS has had their studies and evidence as public record for months. Why the opponents haven’t bothered to come and see what they have ( and what they are up against ) is a mystery, but likely another stall tactic.
To this reporter, they ultimately HOPE the investor who wants to build something that will put some life back into the economy of the town and the Region, will give up and go somewhere else.
I can tell you the investors and the developers are not going to do that, and are determined to last through the process, and convince The Ontario Municipal Board this is a good development.
Every new speedway built within the last 20 years has had to go through this gut churn!
But if it was easy, everybody would be trying it!

All the opponents to this speedway are accomplishing is draining money from the economy of Fort Erie and surrounding communities as well as construction jobs. Eventually it will be built, eventually tens of thousands to maybe a hundred thousand for an actual NASCAR Sprint Cup Race will come and money will be spent. At some point the cat and mouse will have to end, lets just hope it’s sooner than later.
- SteveThat’s the frustrating part. This track is a no-brainer for the improvement of the economy
- Erik Tomasin Fort Erie and region that’s flat on it’s back. The opposition can’t afford the tech studies it takes to back up their
baseless stance, but the public process allows them to slow it down and delay it.
It might be “later”, but thank goodness the investors are notr scared off by a few misguided
malcontents, and are determined to build it! Thanks for the note Steve!
What is wrong with people these days. I think a lot of the nay sayers are only doing this for their 15 minutes of fame[attention]. Those that believe in their cause will move on to other issues when; God willing, this process is over. There is more good to this project than the miniscule amount of bad some per sieve. If it was another casino going up, I guess it would be OK.[LOL].
- James ConradI lived next to the CNE grounds when they were pitching the Indy and I was
- Erik Tomasembarassed at some of the arguments some of my neighbours put forth, and
just about all of it was based on ignorance. It wasn’t until Danny Sullivan told
them to shut up DID they shut up and listen and the race was approved.
Same with the few in Fort Erie trying to stop CMS. I have also stated they
are hoping they can tie this up using the public hearing system hoping the
developer and investor will give up. I can tell you as close as I am to this story,
and Raceline is the ONLY racing radio they are talking to, they are NOT going
to give up. They have spent millions getting it to this point on studies and
documents proving this is a good investment. The appellants have nothing
and no money to get it. The track will win in the end and so will the fans,
the town and the region.
I think it’s apparent to everyone that the “appellants”, as you call them, are simply trying to stall this for as long as possible, without much to back up their opposition. Unfortunately I heard a similar story regarding the proposed rebuilding of part of the CFL stadium in Ottawa, also seemingly endlessly delayed by the same (or similar) process in Ontario. I think you mentioned this once before, when noting how fast the new F1 track in Texas is being built.
- K.R.B.Forget it’s an historic break through in the sport, Canada’s first one mile oval.
- Erik TomasYou have somebody WANTING to invest millions in a region of the province of Ontario that
needs it VERY badly, and these delays due to Provincial process are basically telling
the investor to wait while we dither with red tape and politics. It’s idiotic and unfair!
