As of lunch time today ( Tuesday March 15th ) Paul Tracy’s tweets indicate he’s still waiting to hear if he has a sponsor lined up for a full-time gig with Conquest Racing for the rapidly approaching IndyCar season.
He’s frustrated and I know what he’s going through. I’ve played the waiting game on sponsors too many times to count. That’s why Subaru and Tissot and out existing partners are such good guys.
While the earthquake and tsunami devastation images and the nuclear crisis in Japan tears our hearts out, the first motorsport casualty from the disaster: The World Moto GP motorcycle racing championship, that Raceline’s connected to through Tissot, has cancelled the April 24th date at Twin Ring Motegi just outside Tokyo.
This date is cursed. Last year it had to be postponed until October due to travel disruptions caused by that volcano eruption in Iceland.
So far, no word from IndyCar if their final dash at TWM Tokyo is still a go. That’s on the schedule for September 18th, or from Formula One for their Grand Prix of Japan at Suzuka October 9th.
Those dates sound a long way off, but all you have to do is see the video of the damage and of course understand the threat of radioactivity from those damaged nuclear power generating plants and the subsequent health risks to know Japan might be too badly damaged, even this fall, for those events to go ahead.
And in light of the lives lost and the potential for a nuclear disaster that could effect the entire planet, a couple of auto races “don’t mean a hell o’ beans” in this world!
