If you’re not too busy …

September 23rd, 2009 by tish.iceton

One of the things I love about my job is that I often have the opportunity to give you a chance to win great prizes, especially when I fill in for Erin & Mike on the morning show.  It is so much fun to make you crazy happy! So it is with great excitement I tell you of my weekend plans that could be good for you.

Saturday afternoon I will be helping METRO celebrate it’s first birthday at the Bayview & Eglinton store between 2-3.  During that hour I will have gift card codes worth 1000 Loyalty Club Points, (that’s two ballots for Erin & Mike’s Trip a Day-but I bet you knew that already) plus one person will win over $5000.00 in groceries. Honest! Everyone who enters during that hour will be eligble. You must be there when I make the draw to win though. So you come down, say hi, pick up some bread and milk, something for dinner and maybe go home with loads of free groceries!  Love it!

Then on Sunday morning I will be at The Home Depot on Caledonia Rd. with the representative from Scotts for the “How To Work Shop” on getting our lawn ready for fall.  As great as September has been- 20 days without rain has been a little rough on the grass.  So bring all your questions and even a lawn sample if you like and get help from the Scotts lawn care expert.  I will be on hand to say hi and give away some Home Depot gift cards.  That could certainly help you have the nicest lawn on the block next year!  I will see you there early – say 9 am?    Here is more info…

I am going to have a fun weekend. Hope to see you. If you’re not too busy.

Thanks for stopping by. ‘Til next time… Stay Gru-v!

Tim McGraw

August 31st, 2009 by tish.iceton

If you are reading this because I mentioned it on air this evening – thanks for listening.  I hope you enjoy my story…

Recently as I was travelling EB on the 401, Tim McGraw popped into my head.  It happened as I came upon the first sign identifing the Highway of Heroes.  As I looked at the sign, a wave of extreme appreciation washed over me.  I felt proud to be Canadian and proud that we honour our soldiers on this stretch of the Trans Canada Highway.   Then just as quickly, this song by Tim McGraw popped into my head.  I first heard it over two years ago.  I love the story it tells and the emotion it brings.  I thought I would share it with you.

The soldiers may be wearing uniforms of a different country but they could easily be our men and women.

The song moves me every time I hear it.

Just Feels Good

August 31st, 2009 by tish.iceton

It always feels good to be part of something special.   If you are following me on Twitter you may have seen the link and follow up from our Friday Feel Good Favourite caller Catherine Ryan.  She and 7 other families are adopting babies  from China and this past weekend they were all going to see their babies picture for the first time. That IS special.  We played Amy Grant “Baby Baby” for Catherine on the FGF while unbeknownst to us she was sitting in her car and video taping the call as it happened.  She posted it on her blog and we posted a link on CHFI.com.  Well, we followed up with Catherine this morning just before 8 0′clock and asked her how it felt to see her baby girl for the first time. You can imagine how over the moon she is!

Check out little Hannah… www.catherineschatter.blogspot.com

Thank you Catherine for sharing your joy with all of us!

Thanks for stopping by. ‘Til next time…Stay Gru-v!

For His Fans

August 23rd, 2009 by tish.iceton

I know there are a lot of CHFI listeners from Thunder Bay and many who listen on line at CHFI.com so I thought I would post the picture of Adrain Marchuk who plays Frankie Valli in Jersey Boys for all his fans.  He has been away for many years but still gets back for the occasional family visit.

He was so generous with his time to stop by and say hi to our CHFI winners back stage.  Break a leg Adrian!

Lots of Jersey Fun

August 23rd, 2009 by tish.iceton

 tishbobg.jpg

Such fun we had yesterday at the Toronto Center for the Arts celebrating the 1st anniversary of Jersey Boys.  If you haven’t seen the show it is an absolute must! It tells the story behind the music of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons – how four blue-collar boys from the wrong side of the tracks became one of the biggest North American pop music sensations of all time.  The music gave me goosebumps, but my biggest thrill was meeting Bob Gaudio the member of the group who wrote all those  fabulous Four Seasons songs.  He was delightful. We talked for about 10 minutes before we went on the air and the entire time a little voice in the back of my head was saying “why aren’t you rolling tape! Tish- you’re missing all this good stuff!” We weren’t set up for recording interviews at the remote and although I have a recording application on my phone, there was a part of me that felt the loose casual mood of the conversation would have been  lost had I interrupted to start recording.  At least I got a pic!

The fun also included hanging out with a slew of CHFI Ticket Blitz winners.  I accompanied the winners and their guests not only to Jersey Boys but to dinner at Baton Rouge as well. It was such a pleasure to spend time with all of you, thanks for being such dedicated fans of what we do here at CHFI.  You truly make it fun.

Thanks to everyone at The Toronto Center for the Arts for the back stage tour and making us feel so welcome.  Adrian Marchuk who played Frankie Valli even came back to meet our winners.  He was so nice. But then-he is  from Thunder Bay after all!

Thanks for stopping by. ’til next time…Stay Gru-v!

Sisters

August 9th, 2009 by tish.iceton

CHFI LISTENER JANE JACKSON SENT

THIS ALONG TO ME.  I THOUGHT I

 WOULD SHARE IT WITH YOU…

A  young wife sat on a sofa on a hot  humid day,

drinking   iced tea and visiting with her Mother. As

they   talked about life, about marriage, about  the

responsibilities  of life and the obligations  of

adulthood,  the mother clinked the ice cubes in  her

glass  thoughtfully and turned a clear, sober  glance

upon  her  daughter

‘Don’t  forget your  Sisters,’ she advised, swirling

the  tea leaves to  the bottom of her glass. ‘They’ll

be  more  important as you get older. No matter how

much   you love your husband, no matter how much  you

love  the children you may have, you are still  going

to  need Sisters. Remember to go places with  them now

and  then; do things with  them.’

‘Remember  that  ’Sisters’ means ALL the women…

your   girlfriends, your daughters, and all your  other

women  relatives too. ‘You’ll need other  women. Women

always   do.’

What  a funny piece  of advice!’ the young woman

thought.  Haven’t I  just gotten married?

Haven’t  I just joined the  couple-world? I’m now a

married  woman, for  goodness sake! A grownup! Surely

my  husband and  the family we may start will be all I

need  to  make my life worthwhile!’

But  she  listened to her Mother. She kept contact

with  her  Sisters and made more women friends each

year.  As  the years tumbled by, one after another,

she   gradually came to understand that her Mom  really

knew  what she was talking about. As time  and nature

work  their changes and their mysteries  upon a woman,

Sisters  are the mainstays of her  life.

After  more than 50 years of  living in this world,

here  is what I’ve  learned:

THIS  SAYS IT  ALL:

Time   passes.

Life  happens.

Distance   separates.

Children  grow  up.

Jobs  come and go.

Love   waxes and wanes.

Men  don’t do what they’re  supposed to do.

Hearts   break.

Parents  die.

Colleagues   forget favors.

Careers   end.

BUT………

Sisters   are there, no matter how much time and how

many   miles are

between  you. A girl friend is  never farther away

than  needing her can  reach.

When  you have to walk that  lonesome valley and you

have  to walk it by  yourself, the women in your life

will  be on the  valley’s rim, cheering you on,

praying  for you,  pulling for you, intervening on

your  behalf, and  waiting with open arms at the

valley’s   end.

Sometimes,  they will even  break the rules and walk

beside  you…Or come in  and carry you out.

Girlfriends,   daughters, granddaughters,

daughters-in-law,   sisters, sisters-in-law, Mothers,

Grandmothers,   aunties, nieces, cousins, and extended

family,   all bless our life!

The  world  wouldn’t be the same without women, and

neither   would I. When we began this adventure  called

womanhood,  we had no idea of the  incredible joys or

sorrows  that lay ahead. Nor  did we know how much we

would  need each  other..

Every  day, we need each other  still. Pass this on

to  all the women who help  make your life meaningful.

I  just did. Short and  very sweet:

THANKS FOR STOPPING BY!

‘TILNEXT TIME…STAY GRU-V!

The Most Delicious Day!

August 8th, 2009 by tish.iceton

How I love a day off with no entries in my day-timer!  Waking up and knowing the entire day is all mine is the most delicious feeling.  Such was my day yesterday.  I enjoyed my coffee in our backyard ”cage”, with the squirrels and birds and just put-skied. (is that a word? I like it. It is now)

I had this insatiable desire to cook, which I suspect came as a result of seeing the movie Julie & Julia the night before.  I do love to cook and bake, but my busy schedule doesn’t often allow for such activities.   I think back to my years in Thunder Bay when I hosted a morning show, was an exhibitor at fall art shows, had two young children to get to hockey, swimming and dancing AND hosted a boxing day open house every year, for which I  prepared all the food!  How did I do that? Not sure, but my dear friend tells me I was nutty through all of it. I was having fun. I don’t remember the nuttiness.  Just the fun job I had and all the interesting people I met along the way.

So yesterday I found a video on youtube of a chef from DISH making Red Velvet Cupcakes.  I watched it, took down the recipe, walked to the grocery store for ingredients I didn’t have and then made beautiful red cupcakes. So yummy! But I wasn’t done. Next it was fried chicken also following a DISH video.  A lot of work for chicken my son informed me wasn’t his favourite.  I didn’t take offense.  It was the preparing and the process I enjoyed most.  The end result? Not so important. The chicken was good don’t get me wrong, we just don’t normally eat fried food so my son was letting me know that the way I usually cook chicken is the way he prefers it.

My friend in Thunder Bay who reminds me of my nuttiness is also my cooking guru. She is an amazing cook and baker and right from the start of our friendship, 28 years ago,  she was my cooking-go-to-gal. I had a question-I called Karen. Moving to Toronto didn’t change that.  While in the grocery store picking out apples for a recipe I called to ask which ones were best. She was leaving work for the day and laughing at how her end of the conversation must have sounded in a packed elevator!  She knows me well after all these years and has come to expect “just because” phone calls. Sometimes they are the best phone calls.  I called her twice yesterday while she was at work. The second call was a cooking question but the first call I made was early in the morning after I received an email from my husband, who is in Thunder Bay, about the paper mill closing.  Her husband has worked at the mill for 30 years and the talk of it closing has been in the air for awhile now but this seems more final. So I called to see how they were coping and to offer my support and let her know I was thinking of them.   Distance does not exist when you make those phone calls.  You know what I mean.  The cooking question later in the day was filled with more frivolity I assure you!

Loved Julie & Julia by the way and thanks to all of you CHFI listeners who said hi and told me they too enjoyed the movie!  If you see it- be prepared to do some cooking!

Tomorrow I will post a wonderful email I received from CHFI listener Jane Jackson about friends.  Hope you can make it back.

Thanks for stopping by! ‘Til next time…Stay Gru-v!

Paolo’s in town!

July 29th, 2009 by tish.iceton

On an earlier blog I told you about some of the music I am diggin’ this summer and gave you a chance to listen to my current favourite artist ‘Paolo Nutini’.   Well, after what seems like forever-he if finally playing here in Toronto!  Friday night he will be at the Opera House performing before a sold out crowd but in the afternoon you will be able to meet him at Indigo on Bloor St.  He will be in-store about 12:30 to meet fans.  I am not sure if he will perform but I am hoping!

A little Paolo background for you…His debut album ‘These Streets’ was number 3 on the album chart, going gold in less then two weeks and certified platinum just four short weeks later.  In May 2006, Paolo appeared at the New York Pops Birthday Gala at Carnegie Hall at the personal request of the evening’s honoree-Atlantic Records Founding Chairman Ahmet Ertegun.  Later that year he brought the house down during a special tribute to Ertegun and Atlantic Records at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Paolo was the only new artist on the bill.  I am so in love with this guy’s music it’s crazy!!! I listen and listen and listen. Then listen some more!

Check Paolo out here…  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GAgm8sZ5mo

I hope to have pics to share Friday.

Thanks for stopping by.  ‘Till next time…Stay Gru-v!
