2010 Handbook

January 16th, 2010 by tish.iceton

Faithful CHFI listener Norma sent this one along to me and I found it gave me a lift, maybe you will too…

HANDBOOK 2010

Health:
1.       Drink plenty of water.
2.       Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar.

7.       Read more books than you did in 2009 .
8.       Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day
9.       Sleep for 7 hours.
10.    Take a 10-30 minutes walk daily. And while you walk, smile.

Personality:
11.    Don’t compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
12.    Don’t have negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.
13.    Don’t over do. Keep your limits.
14.    Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
15.    Don’t waste your precious energy on gossip.
16.    Dream more while you are awake

21.    No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
22.    Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn.  Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.

30.    What other people think of you is none of your business.
31.    Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.

Life:
32.    Do the right thing!
33.    Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful.
34.    GOD heals everything.
35.    However good or bad a situation is, it will change..

And if I might add..find something to appreciate everyday.

Aunt Tillie

December 19th, 2009 by tish.iceton

A few weeks back on Coach’s Corner, Don Cherry mentioned his Aunt Tillie.  I was a little surprised because I thought I was the only person with an Aunt Tillie.  When I saw Don the next week (he and Brian Williams are in every Sunday to record the syndicated show Grapeline) I told him I too had an Aunt with that wonderful old fashion name, he said her name was really Matilda.  So was mine. Her name has been popping up often lately.  Turns out Don’s producer called their dog Tillie and a character on a television show I was watching had an Aunt Tillie.

I loved my Aunt Tillie. She was always old to me. She lived on Henry Street in Halifax in a big old house with lots of dark wood and lace curtains with a woman named Violet.  She and Violet shared the house after Tillie’s husband, Bob, died. I don’t remember Uncle Bob, but for some reason I inherited his pocket watch and Catechism book along the way. I remember the house was always quiet and I thought the rooms where scary, but I  enjoyed visiting.  She would spend time making Barbie clothes by hand for my Barbie’s and I was always delighted with the dresses. Some where along the way I inherited a quilt she made which has, for it’s entire life with me, remained folded in a closet in what ever house I was living in.  The quilt is faded and worn and would never win an award at a quilt show, but it was my “Aunt Tillie’s, so - it must be preserved” was the thinking. Well, about four weeks ago Aunt Tillie’s quilt showed up at the foot of our bed.  My cleaning lady just decided to put it there.  As a result I have been using it.

This morning as I enjoy my quiet house and my first cup of coffee I am sitting wrapped in the comfort of that old quilt thinking about Aunt Tillie and how happy I am it showed up on my bed.  What was I saving it for?

So Aunt Tillie’s quilt will remain out of the closet and put to good use every weekend while I nap and watch football, or curl up on the chesterfield with my morning coffee. I believe she is happy seeing her handy work serving a purpose rather than stuffed away.  I also get to feel her happy memories as I wrap the old fabric around me and for a few seconds I am the dog with it’s head out the window and the bird with the french fry.  Delicious! Thanks Aunt Tillie!

Back from holidays Monday.  ’Til next time…Stay Gru-v!

- The Blind Side Blind Sides Hollywood!

December 14th, 2009 by tish.iceton

I’m so pleased to see the latest box office figures showing the Blind Side continuing to bring in eye opening attendance figures (150 million) after 3 weeks in the face of some stiff competition.

The film has a wonderful uplifting message about pro football player Michael Oher and how one women’s gesture of kindness turns into something that changes his life. It’s a true story that has you leaving the theatre feeling good.  Even my 19 year old daughter who saw it with me at the CHFI premier returned with a friend to see it a second time a few days later.

The Golden Globe Award nominations will be announced tomorrow morning – I’ll be rooting for Sandra Bullock .  Her performance is amazing!

I’m off for a few more days – just 10 more sleeps until Christmas!

‘til next time…Stay Gru-v!

Nashville Here I Come!

November 9th, 2009 by tish.iceton

Paul Shaffer, one of the coolest guys ever, was in TO last Friday night signing copies of his new book “We’ll Be Here For The Rest Of Our Lives”.  He told some great funny stories, sang a bit and then signed books.  Paul is originally from Thunder Bay and although I have interviewed him before, and we have common friends, I would never profess to be an acquaintance.  He was gracious and kind to every person he spoke with and was genuinely appreciative that we were there to see him.  One cool cat!

I am so excited this week has finally arrived! My daughter, my husband and I have been waiting for this week for months!  Our  bags are packed and we are heading to Nashville for the Country Music Awards.  We have been to Nashville before but never to the big show, so we are crazy excited!  Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley will be hosting, Taylor Swift will perform as will Chris Daughtry and Dave Matthews.  This is a big deal in the music world and record companies work hard to have their acts on the show, often having them team up with country artists.  It is always one great live performance after another!  The show is on ABC Wednesday night at 8. I’ll wave!

You can follow me on Twitter - I will be posting all the fun!

Thanks for stopping by. ‘Til next time…Stay Gru-v!

I Could Move In!

October 25th, 2009 by tish.iceton

Yesterday I spent a few hours in Oakville at the Princess Margaret Show Home.  The house is part of the Welcome Home Sweepstakes raising money for Cancer Research.  It was very beautiful!   You can enjoy a guided virtual tour of the home with Lynda Reeves …

www.houseandhome.com/openhouse

I had a great time meeting many of you.  A special hello to Lori Austin who is from Thunder Bay! Lori listened to me on the radio when I lived there and now listens to CHFI.  We had a great chat.  Lori’s family at one time operated a dairy in Thunder Bay, as well as several corner stores they called “Cow Palace”.  Don’t you love that name!

Lynda Reeves from House and Home Magazine was in the kitchen where they were baking cookies with Rolo’s stuffed in the middle.  Yummy!

Music Music Music

October 23rd, 2009 by tish.iceton

There is nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, for me like music. It is as important as the air I breathe and the food I eat. It feeds my soul and makes my being soar. Music can give me goosebumps and tears of joy. Music without memories. Pure, no strings no baggage.  The best.

Here are a few of my current passages to bliss…

Today is my day off and I really should be cleaning closets  but it is way more fun finding new tunes and loading my iPod.

Tomorrow I will be at the Princess Margaret Show Home in Oakville with Lynda Reeves from House and Home Magazine between  1 and 3.  Stop by, say hi, view the fabulous house and I will give you a chance to win a ticket for the Welcome Home Sweepstakes.  How fabulous would it be if you won the over 3 million dollar home with a ticket you won from CHFI?  You would surely have to invite all of us to the house warming party!

Thanks for stopping by. ‘Til next time…Stay Gru-v!

Rod on CHFI

October 19th, 2009 by tish.iceton

Handed my Rod Stewart interview off to producers this morning, who will edit it and create our ‘Up Close And Personal” in time for airing Saturday night at 5 and Sunday morning at 8.   The new CD “SOULBOOK” won’t be released until October 27th,  so you will be hearing it first on CHFI.  My favourite song on the CD is “Rainy Night In Georgia,” the Brook Benton song, but there may not be time for it unfortunately.  Rod’s duet with Mary J. Blige on “You Make Me Feel Brand New” is lovely. Their voices meld together beautifully.  I hope you enjoy “SOULBOOK”as much as I do and can catch “Rod Up Close And Personal” this weekend.

Rod Stewart in LA

October 17th, 2009 by tish.iceton

LA and Rod Stewart were fabulous!  I had difficulty posting pics on Twitter so I am sorry they were few and far between.  One of the record reps snapped a shot of Rod and I and as soon as I get it I will post it here.

Rod was very nice and gave me a wonderful interview. He is very excited about his new CD “SOULBOOK”. He said this is the record he has waited his whole life to record.  The artists he covers were his heroes.  I know you will love Rod’s interpretation of some of the greatest soul songs ever written.  “SOULBOOK” will be available October 27 but you will be able to hear it here on CHFI first, when we air our Rod Stewart Up Close and Personal next weekend.  Stay tuned for times!

While in LA I was staying at the famous Beverly Hilton on Wilshire, just a few blocks from the Beverly Hills Saks and Neiman Marcus.  You may have heard about the Barbra Streisand auction in Beverly Hills this weekend, well it was happening right there at the Beverly Hilton. I wasn’t permitted to take pics, but I got the poster! I thought it was pretty cool!

Hope you can join me tomorrow afternoon at The Home Depot Eglinton & McCowan  between 1-2 for the Home Renovation Tax Credit Workshop with H&R Block.  Don’t you love it when you can save on your taxes? Stop by and get all the details, you just might go home with a $25.00 Home Depot gift card!

Enjoy the colours this weekend, they are spectacular!

Who doesn’t love Jewelry?

September 30th, 2009 by tish.iceton

I recently received my invitation to the 4th Annual Ladies Only Night - “Celebrating The Power Of Woman” and was thrilled to see the evening is now open to everyone!

In past years I have purchased some fabulous pieces of jewelry handmade by Terri Michael that are beautiful and timeless .  The evening is also a fundraiser for The Redwood here in Toronto. So not only are we shopping but we are helping women and children in our community.

Here is the invite with all the details.  See ya there!

Stoned Originals supports 4 different women’s shelters in Canada.  In Toronto, we donate funds to The Redwood.  When Terri decided to commit a percentage of our profits to a cause that could really use our support, we chose these shelters as our focus.  We knew they were underfunded, but had no idea how badly off they were until we became involved with them.

Many shelters are transitional….meaning they are an ‘emergency stop’ where women and children stay for days or a few weeks and then they’re sent elsewhere.  The Redwood is a ‘full service’ haven, if you will, where families usually stay for many months at a time.  Through our involvement with The Redwood, here’s what we know:    Leaving an abusive situation is one of the toughest things any woman or child has to face. The Redwood is there to provide the emotional, practical and social support that families need to get their lives back on track – they offer free and confidential services in 20 different languages, including:

* Programs that help children and youth rebuild their self-esteem and break the cycle of violence through art and play therapy, counseling, and after-school tutoring.

* On-going support to help women build confidence and self-reliance through employment readiness training, assistance in finding affordable housing, and opportunities to pursue post-secondary education.

* Assistance to women and children trapped in an abusive home through outreach visits and educational workshops at local schools, libraries, housing co-ops, churches, mosques, and other community gathering places.

Over 80% of the women leaving The Redwood do not return to their abusive partners.

At the end of the day, if The Redwood doesn’t have enough money to run its facility and support the women and children in their care, then other women whose lives are in jeopardy could be turned away, so we try to raise funds for them whenever we can.  We’re grateful for the work they do and extremely proud to contribute in a small, but meaningful way.
