Tipster – March 25, 2011

Friday, March 25th, 2011

Tonight’s radio picks:

No. 40 – NCAR - Home Win – 1.80 (7:00p)

No. 41 – KANS – Home Plus Win – 1.50 (7:15p)

No. 42 – OIST – Home Plus Win – 2.30 (9:30p)

No. 43 – VRCM-FLST – Tie – 2.50 (9:45p)

Tonight’s Bonus Picks

No. 1 – PIT – Home Win – 1.70 (7:00p) – Two teams that have definitely proven that heart and determination are just as important as skill. The Penguins have been without their two biggest stars and arguably two of the top five players in the league for the almost two months yet they continue to keep winning. Pittsburgh has won six of their last eight and now trail first place Philadelphia by just four points. The Devils playoffs dreams are dead but they gave it a heck of a try after a horrendous start to the season climbing to within four points of a playoff berth at one point.

No. 2 – BUF - Home Win – 1.25 (7:30p) – Sorry Leafs fans, the Sabres just aren’t going to lay down and give up their playoff spot. With Ryan Miller playing some of his best hockey of the season, Buffalo remains three points clear of Carolina and Toronto. The Panthers are clawing their way into the bottom five losing ten of their last thirteen.

I’d like to send a special shout out to all of the people who have helped with the Tipster over the 15+ years it’s been on the air. From Joe to Damon to Mat on the air and Mike and Neil behind the scenes, it’s been a slice. Catch the tip off again… next time.

Tipster – March 24, 2011

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Tonight’s radio picks:

No. 43 – CNCT-SDST – Tie – 2.00 (7:00p)

No. 44 - FLA - Home Win – 2.40 (7:15p)

No. 45 – ARZ-DUKE – Tie – 3.20 (9:30p)

No. 46 – WISC - Home Win – 1.80 (9:45p)

Tonight’s Bonus Picks

No. 17 – BOS – Home Win – 1.60 (7:00p) – Outside of the craziness that occurred in beantown during February 9th’s 8-6 madness, this series has been dominated by the Habs. This is the last meeting of the regular season between these two but it is shaping up to be a preview for the most intriguing first round playoff match-up. There’s obviously no love lost between these two and the last time they met was the ugly incident involving Chara and Pacioretty. The Bruins have only won 2 of their last 8 thus allowing the Habs to gain plenty of ground in the fight for first in the Northeast, but I like them to gain some ground back tonight.

No. 23 – TOR-COL – Tie – 6.50 (9:00p) – We have a guy around here called “The Crusher”. He likes to pop in every once in a while and tell me how great he did on Pro-Line thanks to my picks so I asked him for his pick to click for tonight and this was his pick. No matter how slim the odds seem, the Leafs are playing well and motivated to keep racking up points. The Avalanche are going to miss the playoffs this year but have put together a moderate two game win streak, both wins coming in a shootout. Crusher likes a third.

Tipster – March 23, 2011

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2011

Tonight’s radio picks:

No. 12 – VAN – Visitor Win – 1.85 (7:30p)

No. 15 - SJ – Home Win – 1.55 (10:00p)

Tonight’s Bonus Picks

No. 13 – CHI – Home Win – 1.30 (8:30p) – The Blackhawks need to put some space between themselves and the cluster of three teams sitting one point behind them in the standings. Currently sitting seventh with 86 points, the Hawks have won only twice in their last six and have had the injury bug bite them of late with Patrick Sharp going down on Sunday. Chicago doesn’t want to become one of those rare teams that miss the playoffs after winning the Cup.

No. 14 – ANA – Visitor Win – 1.85 (8:30p) – The other two teams that sit tied with the Flames at 85 points in the West face off for the fifth of six meetings this season. Anaheim has won three of four including an OT thriller earlier this month and come in as the hotter team having won 8 of their last 10 games. Dallas has lost three of their last four, all on home ice.

Tipster – March 22, 2011

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

Tonight’s radio picks:

No. 3 – CAR – Home Win – 1.40 (7:00p)

No. 9 - TOR – Visitor Win – 1.65 (8:00p)

Tonight’s Bonus Picks

No. 2 – NYR – Home Plus Win – 1.70 (7:00p) – The fear amongst their fans that the Rangers would miss the playoffs seems to have subsided. I guess a four-game winning streak and wins in six of their last seven will do that. The Panthers haven’t been pushovers of late despite their deadline sell-off with points in three of their last four games. The Rangers have been lighting the lamp with 20 goals during the 4-game win streak.

No. 4 – PHI – Home Win – 1.45 (7:30p) – Despite nipping at their heels for first overall in the East, the Caps have decided they’d rather play things safe and get everyone healthy in time for the playoffs. Perhaps after being the number one seed last season, they don’t really care to be in that position again. For Caps fans, they are just hoping it’s nothing more serious with Ovechkin than is being let on. Philly still wants that home ice and will take another step in that direction here.

Tipster – March 21, 2011

Monday, March 21st, 2011

Tonight’s radio picks:

No. 8 – DET – Home Win – 1.45 (7:30p)

No. 9 - LA – Home Win – 1.55 (10:30p)

Tonight’s Bonus Picks

No. 8 – UNDER 5.5 – 1.60 (7:30p) – Detroit has gone under in 9 of last 11 at home. Pittsburgh has gone under in 6 of last 8 on the road. The total has been under in all five of the recent match-ups between these teams.

No. 9 – UNDER 5.5 – 1.70 (10:30p) – A mixed bag of results between these two over the last few weeks. The Flames total has gone over in 7 of their last 8 on the road, but when they face the Kings, it’s gone under in 7 of the last 10. At playoff crunch time I don’t expect this to be a high-flying affair.

Tipster – March 18, 2011

Friday, March 18th, 2011

Tonight’s radio picks:

No. 75 – ILNS-UNLV – Tie – 2.20 (9:15p)

No. 76 – GRGA-WAS – Tie – 2.60 (9:30p)

No. 77 – SRCS – Home Plus Win – 1.40 (9:45p)

Tonight’s Bonus Picks

No. 1 – WAS – Visitor Win – 1.70 (7:00p) – Both teams are coming off rare losses. The Caps lost to Detroit on Wednesday, snapping their 9 game winning streak and the Devils losing to the Senators last night, just their second loss in nine games.  They meet for the fourth and final time this season and each game previous has been no contest with the Caps winning twice by a combined score of 12-3 and Devils once 5-0. The Caps will essentially put a pin in the Devils playoff dream balloon.

No. 2 – OVEC – Visitor Win – 1.70 (7:00p) – The two Russians have awaken from their early season slumps and have been leading their teams on the best stretch of their seasons. Ovy has 19 points in his last 15 games while Kovy has 25 points in his last 23.

No. 3 – MTL – Visitor Win – 2.00 (7:00p) – The Habs have won all three meetings this season and have allowed the blue shirts just three goals total in the series. Montreal is just three points back of the Northeast division leading Bruins but the B’s will still have two games in hand after tonight. Carey Price has been the difference maker for the Habs with six wins in his last eight including two shutouts.

Tipster – March 17, 2011

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

Tonight’s radio picks:

No. 73 – BELM-WISC – Tie – 2.60 (7:15p)

No. 74 – MCST – Visitor Win – 2.70 (9:15p)

No. 75 – GONZ-STJN – Tie – 2.00 (9:30p)

Tonight’s Bonus Picks

No. 71 – BRYG – Home Plus Win – 2.00 (7:00p) – The most talked about player this season in college hoops gets the full spotlight now as Jimmer Fredette and number three BYU get their tournament started. President Obama called Fredette the “Best scorer in the country, obviously”, high recognition for the nation’s leading scorer. Coming off a humbling loss in the Mountain West tournament final, BYU will be looking to make a statement right out of the gate.

No. 77 – KSST – Home Win – 2.40 (9:45p) – Not every game can be an upset and the Wildcats should have little trouble with Utah State. Fifth ranked in the tournament and number twenty-one in the nation, Kansas State is coming off a loss in the Big 12 semi-finals to Colorado that like BYU will have them motivated and ready to go.

Tipster – March 16, 2011

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Tonight’s radio picks:

Upset picks for round one of College Hoops include Belmont and Richmond

Tonight’s Bonus Picks

No. 12 – CAR – Home Win – 1.70 (7:00p) – A loss by the blue and white tonight will essentially be the nail in their coffin in their hunt for eighth. It was fun while it lasted though. There’s just too many teams in the mix and that includes Carolina who would move 6 points up on the Leafs with a win here. Boosted by a huge confidence boosting 1-0 win over Buffalo last night, look for the Canes to take the final match-up over the Leafs.

No. 13 – WAS – Visitor Win – 2.00 (7:30p) – Just too good odds to pass up here. Caps are the hottest team in the league winners of 9 straight. Detroit has just two wins in their last six overall and two for their last six at home too.

No. 15 – VAN – Home Plus Win – 1.40 (10:00p) – Too tough a match-up for the Avs who have lost 20 of their last 22 games. Vancouver has six straight wins and are running away with the Western Conference title and hiding. Not only do they have the best record in the league they have far and away the best goal differential as well at +66.

Tipster – March 15, 2011

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

Tonight’s radio picks:

No. 1 – NJ – Home Win – 1.35 (7:00p)

No. 4 – MTL – Home Win – 1.70 (7:00p)

No. 5 – BUF – Home Win – 1.50 (7:30p)

Tonight’s Bonus Picks

No. 2 – NYI – Visitor Win – 2.30 (7:00p) – A perfect recipe for an upset. A team returning home from a western road trip (the Rangers) against a team that is playing their best hockey of the season (the Islanders). The Isles haven’t lost in regulation in seven games going 4-0-3 during that recent stretch.

No. 9 – DAL – Home Win – 1.70 (8:30p) – Three of four meetings this season have gone to overtime or a shootout with the Stars winning three times. Both teams are coming off rare losses of late with the Sharks getting eaten alive in Chicago last night. Dallas can move to within two points of San Jose with a win.

Tipster – March 14, 2011

Monday, March 14th, 2011

Tonight’s radio picks:

No. 7 – TOR – Home Win – 1.85 (7:00p)

No. 9 – CHI – Home Win – 1.65 (8:00p)

Tonight’s Bonus Picks

No. 10 – VAN – Home Win – 1.30 (10:00p) – There’s little doubt who has been the elite of the elite this regular season as the Canucks continue their march toward the President’s Trophy. Looking to be the first 100 point team in the league, Vancouver just keeps on rolling as they come into this one on another 5-game win streak. Not only is the current win streak impressive but all five wins came on the road. Usually we’re wary of teams returning home from a long road trip but this Canucks team is too tough to stop.
