Sideline Stories with Ann Schmaltz

Just a little more than three months ago, Canucks fans watched as their team skated off the ice inside Rogers Arena with heads hung low. No celebrating a Stanley Cup victory that night. But….they’re back! The page has been turned! The players are ready to go! And this time, experience is on their side.

“That’s exactly what you take away. You learn and you gain more in terms of knowing what to expect throughout the grind of a two-month journey,” said [...]

Having the best overall record at the end of the regular season, the best power play and a penalty kill tied for second place, the Canucks begin thier quest for Lord Stanley in a very different position this time around. The clear favourites.

Up first, the Blackhawks. The defending Stanley Cup champions. Vancouver finished 20 points clear of the eigth-place ‘Hawks. But, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some demons to overcome against the very team that has ousted Vancouver from the [...]

Rick Rypien did the Canucks a favour this week.

By now we all know the fourth-line centre grabbed a Wild fan while leaving the ice after being ejected from the game in Minnesota Tuesday night. He crossed the line. A pro athlete cannot do that, no matter the situation. Rypien has been suspended for six games. The Canucks have been fined $25,000.

The media and hockey die-hards have had a field day debating back and forth how the incident went down. Who [...]

Picked by many hockey publications as a team that will get to the dance next spring, the Canucks are ready to embark on a season that promises to be full of excitement.

Already, a number of interesting story lines are set in place.

It will be over the eight exhibition games that a new “leadership group” emerges. My feeling is fans will see Henrik Sedin wearing the ‘C’ on his sweater. How can it not be him? Ten years with the organization. [...]

When Keron Williams first lined up at defensive end at the Lions training camp, the consensus among onlookers was that the free-agent acquisition was too small. Listed at 6-foot-1, 260 pounds, he seemed a shadow of those who had played the position ahead of him like Cameron Wake. But by the end of Day 2, it was clear that head coach Wally Buono knew what he was doing.”The things you like about him are his level of intensity, his professionalism [...]

If you listen to the Lions go-to-guy Casey Printers, he’s the first to tell you: “This is our team!”Veteran receiver Geroy Simon argues: “The quarterback is the leader of the team. It’s always like that.”General Manager and head coach Wally Buono looks at it as: “It’s their team.”Three high profile members of the B.C. Lions having different opinions as to who will provide the leadership and accountability that is desperately needed after last season’s embarrassing and ugly outcome. But let’s be [...]

“Wishing to play against the Blackhawks would not make you a smart person.”

That’s how Vancouver head coach Alain Vigneault opened his media scrum after putting his team through the paces on the final day before the Western Conference semifinal battle begins tomorrow night at the United Center here in Chicago.

So, does that mean every one of his players has a low IQ? Because each that will pull on a Canucks jersey in this series has been waiting for the “rematch”. [...]

“Right now, I need my best players to be my best players.”  A repeated comment from Canucks head coach Alain Vigneault after his team dropped a 5-3 outcome to the L.A. Kings in Game 3 and found themselves trailing in the first-round series 2-1.  How cliche.  And really, with all do respect, how ridiculous.

Fans already know the top names are struggling. We all watched the star goalie and captain, Roberto Luongo, get the hook late in the second period of [...]

Two down. Who knows how many more to go?

From the outset of the Western Conference quarterfinal, many would have predicted that given the Canucks’ playoff experience, and regular season finish, it would be a wrap in five games. But over the first two battles, it’s clear this series is going the distance. There have been many standout performances early on, from each side. Both goaltenders have stood their ground. Roberto Luongo has given his critics something to rethink with the [...]

For many in this country now is the most wonderful time of the year. The NHL playoffs are here! And this time around the fans in Vancouver are buzzing with a little bit extra. The city itself is coming off an electric high. The spirit of the Olympic games is still very fresh. And that feeling we all felt when Canada claimed gold in the mens hockey tournament is still resonating.

It can’t help but be carried over.

Now the excitement will [...]
