With Couture Back In UFC, It Appears His Relationship With Affliction Has Soured. Couture was surprised to read some of the comments made from Executives of the company and is taking the high road through the media; I wonder which road the UFC Champ is taking behind closed doors.

Speaking of Couture, his opponent at UFC 91, Brock Lesnar, was able to score huge ratings during his ESPN appearance on E:60. The MMA blogosphere has been critical of the network’s MMA coverage, so many are wondering if they are about to kick it up a notch. MMA is a real, serious and viable sport…not a sideshow attraction.

Fans of Nate Diaz Can Expect Him To Return in 2009, most likely at UFC 94. As for one of the few people that can challenge Anderson Silva for the UFC’s middleweight title, Paulo Filho is in fact, ready for a UFC middleweight title run, but only when Anderson Silva retires. They are friends and training partners and will not let business ( or a huge pay cheque ) get in the way.

At age 41, Renzo Gracie is contemplating making a return to action, likely in the lightweight division. I believe he has his eyes set on BJ Penn, as is evidenced by his comments made in a recent video. Take a look as Renzo Gracie talks about life as a fighter and his feud with BJ Penn.

There are rumblings of a Kimbo Slice, Seth Petruzelli Rematch Possible for K-1 Dynamite! on NYE in Japan. Not sure it’s worth anything to the Japanese MMA public, but look for an American Investor to perhaps pay the purse, in hopes to air it on American soil. Mark Cuban from HDNet comes to mind.

In closing, there are some big fights next month. Here’s a look at 10 November Tussles Worth Watching.

Post UFC 90 - The Aftermath

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

The Aftermath that has spawned from the UFC 90 Main Event between Anderson Silva and Patrick Cote is still creating quite a stir amongst many fans and analysts of the sport. There are those that are criticizing the champ for his antics and as I mentioned on Sportsnet blog and with Roger Lajoie on The Fan 590, it’s all a matter of personal taste. You either like it, or you don’t. You either get it, or you rip it.

Dana White was none to happy with Silva on Saturday night and recently did an interview to inform everyone that Silva Wants Redemption and has asked to get right back into the Octagon as early as UFC 91, scheduled for November 15th. I doubt this will happen as it’s less than three weeks away. Who is going to step up and fight Silva on such short notice. When you look past this request, you still have to wonder Who’s Next for Anderson Silva?

Speaking of UFC 91, Randy Couture says size won’t matter when he fights Brock Lesnar in the main event, while Brock Lesnar has requested that Steve Mazzagatti not be the referee for the main event.

On a side note, I had the chance to go One-on-one with UFC host Rachelle Leah, who is this month’s cover girl for Playboy Magazine. Check out the link, courtesy of Sportsnet.ca.

EliteXC: A Lesson in Expectations Management

Turi Altavilla: A Death in the Family

Yesterday I had the chance to sit with Patrick Cote in Sportsnet’s ‘Connected’ studio while ‘The Predator’ was conducting a media tour in Toronto. We spoke at length about his upcoming fight with Anderson Silva at UFC 90 and of course, his thoughts on Travis Lutter’s comments that he ‘is going to get murdered’ by Silva.

Cote looks ready and is very confident. He is far from cocky, but was very calm and cheerful during his time at the network. Will he shock the world? That remains to be seen, but spend a few minutes with him and there is a look in his eyes that definitely does not show a fighter who appears to be worried to fight the best pound for pound fighter on the planet.

Issues for Elite XC continue to mount as parent company, ProElite Violated Loan Terms and it looks like CBS/Showtime May Seek Remedy. Not good. The Four Horsemen of the EliteXC Apocalypse fell to the Underrated Power And Influence of the Online MMA Media And Various Blogs who challenged the ‘Standgate’ issues after Seth Petruzelli’s comments raised red flags across the industry.

It’s now time to Sort Through the Pro Elite Unemployment Line with Elite XC Champ Jake Sheilds Hopes His Future Is With UFC. He’s got the skills to be a top ranked competitor in their, has called out GSP in the past and believe me, GSP would like to straighten him out. Would be a stellar bout. As for ‘Slice’, He Wants A Rematch With Seth and is eyeing Japan  as an alternative. Lost in the shuffle: Where does Tito Ortiz Go From Here?

UFC 89 has come and gone but there is a variety of content that can satisfy the appetite that MMA fans hunger for. From the UFC 89 Post Fight Press Conference Video to UFC 89 Post Fight Video Interviews as well as nice breakdown of  the Winners and Losers from UFC 89.

Main event winner Michael Bisping had been announced as one coach season nine of “The Ultimate Fighter: USA Vs UK” and Will Face Off Against The Winner of Franklin/Henderson in his next bout. The winner of Franklin / Henderson will be the coach for Team USA. As for Bisping’s performance on Saturday night, he’s not ready for a title shot and will be the first person to tell you that he is still two fights away from even considering fighting Anderson Silva.

In the co-main event, Keith Jardine defeated Brandon Vera, who once again lacked the characteristics of the fighter we saw wreak havoc in the heavyweight division a few years ago. Even Dana White thinks Vera Has Lost That Killer Instinct with many people wondering about Brandon Vera’s Questionable Future.

The UFC continues to expand it’s product on a global level, but it hasn’t been a cake walk in many countries. Dana White Talks Corruption and Local Mafia Roadblocks to UFC International Expansion and gives a hint at some of the issues they are encountering.

Bizarre Fight Triangle: GSP - Penn - Silva

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

With the UFC taking their roadshow overseas, UFC President Dana White is being pressed by some the toughest media on the planet. White is media savvy and is taking it all in stride, while dropping various nuggets here and there.

In speaking with The Sun, Dana White stated that If GSP Beats BJ Penn, He Will Get Anderson Silva next. But if BJ Penn Wins, He Will Not Get Silva, No Matter How Much Penn whines and complains. Also mentioned was that if Silva defeats Cote and comes out unscathed, he may make a return to the light-heavyweight division, maybe even by year’s end.

This is rattling news considering guys Josh Koschek and Thiago Alves are fighting for the #1 contender spot in the welterweight division, in hopes to get a fight with GSP. Michael Bisping is talking about getting a shot at Anderson Silva’s middleweight title, pending his performance vs Chris Leben later on today, as are Dan Henderson and Nate Marquardt, with many already forgetting that Patrick Cote is fighting Silva next weekend.

With so many guys in each division vying for a title shot, but with the champions all looking to fight each other, the UFC Matchmaking can get tricky what with what sells best: a title fight or a super fight?

A Night of Combat II - Post fight interviews

UFC 89: Bisping Vs Leben goes down tomorrow afternoon. Check out the UFC 89 Press Conference Photos And Videos as well as the UFC 89 Weigh-In Results.

While Michael Bisping – The UK MVP is getting most of the hype overseas, Bisping’s Focus is to KO ‘The Crippler’. He believes that Leben Is Underestamating Him and is out to prove a point. Win or Lose, Bisping will be using this bout as barometer for an hopeful title shot Vs Anderson Silva.

The Co-Main Event sees Brandon Vera taking on Keith Jardine. Both Have Something To Prove in this fight so while we expect an all out war, don’t be surprised if they are both tentative at the start.

In other bouts, Rameau Sokoudjou is the favourite vs Luis Cane, but Cane is Brazil’s Next in Line for fighters who will shine from the land of legendary MMA fighters. For ‘The Irish Hand Grenade, Marcus Davies: Two Surgeries Down, One Kelly To Go is his motto. He’s always a candidate for fight of the night, so don’t blink when he’s in the Octagon.

In other MMA news, there are stories circulationg that Ken Shamrock’s Cut Sort of Stemmed From Not Getting…An Extra Cut of the pie, as he was upset that he wasn’t getting any extra money once he found out what Kimbo was making in their bout. As for Kimbo, his trainer Bas Rutten Thinks Kimbo Is Not Getting A Fair Break with ‘Standgate’ and he doesn’t believe his fighter should be in main events (just yet).

The Donald is back in the news as had and Fedor Emelianenko announced a reality show project entitled ‘Fighting Fedor’, as well as a final conclusion that Affliction Has Signed an Exclusive Deal With Fedor Emelianenko and M-1 for Global Exclusivity. Trump’s endorsement of “Fighting Fedor” gives show a shot at reality while Affliction VP, Tom Atencio says Arlovski and Barnett are both being considered as Fedor’s next opponent.

UFC 89 Main Event fighter, Michael ‘The Count’ Bisping, is getting his fair share of media attention, not only in the UK, but online as well. He currently has a video diary up with some great shots and candid moments.

He’ll be taking on American Chris ‘The Crippler’ Leben on Saturday and doesn’t appear to be worried. According to Bisping: ‘Leben Still Looks the Same’. Not sure I agree, as Leben looks like he is taking this fight seriously and looks to be in the best shape ever, especially considering he is going from a jail cell to a main event.

As I mentioned a few days ago on The Fan 590 and on my various blogs, Elite XC would only get so far with the alleged ‘Standgate’ during the Kimbo / Petruzelli fight. I stated that it would be just a matter of time before Nevada State Atlhetic Commissioner Keith Kizer would speak up on the matter and really get the industry buzzing. Well Kizer has piped up in this excellent online vid.

M-1 and Affliction will be holding press conference in New York, today, most likely to announce the upcoming ‘Fighting Fedor’ reality show, the fact their contract locks Fedor to Affliction, nixing the UFC, as well as his bout in January Vs Andrei Arlovski.

For those who haven’t heard yet, “UFC All Access” host and former Octagon Girl, Rachelle Leah’s Playboy issue goes on newsstands tomorrow. Here’s a video of Rachelle Leah behind The Scenes At Playboy to help promote the appearance. Look for her to join me on ‘The Showdown’ tonight, on The Fan 590.

UFC 89 goes down this Saturday night, live on Sportsnet but it appears UFC 90 (happening the following weekend) is taking up some headline room. UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva is still talking about retiring in 2009, so much in fact that he is already stating “My Time Is Already Over”. I don’t buy it one bit…this guy is all class, as ruthless as they come and is playing mind games with his opponent, Canadian Patrick Cote.

Always good for a quote or two, UFC President Dana White talks expansion, Junie Browning, Kimbo Slice, UFC future and more in this two part audio feature.

In some Elite XC news, it’s safe to say that the ‘Slice’ Investigation Was Launched due to Public Outcry but what many have forgotten is “Towelgate”; the whole situation with Gina Carano having to strip down to make weight. Many people have criticized Elite XC’s Jared Shaw for taking a sneak peak at Carano while holding up one of the towels as well as how the whole handling of the situation occured. Gina Carano (Video) Talks About Nude Weigh In Experience and once again proves why she is the ‘Face of Women’s MMA’.

Former UFC Veteran and Canadian, Joe Doerksen Steps In To The Sengoku Middleweight GP in Japan while it looks like Big John McCarthy May Need To Resurrect Some Past Burnt Bridges if he hopes to get back into referring in the Octagon.

Koschek Replaces Sanchez Vs Alves at UFC 90

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

By now you may have already heard that Diego Sanchez is Out and Josh Koschek Has Stepped Up To Take On Thiago Alves at UFC 90. I see this has a huge gamble for both Koscheck and Alves, but one with massive rewards for the winner.

UFC 89 is just around the corner and Bisping Is Looking Fitter Than Ever, Prior To Cutting Weight For Leben. Same for Chris as there are Photos of Leben Showcasing A Newly Rejuvenated Crippler, one whose body fat percentage has dropped significantly.

The Elite XC drama continues, with some detailing of the Kimbo - Petruzelli investigation currently taking primary focus. To make things even worse, last week, Elite XC’s Jeremy Lappen stated he was misquoted by Sports Illustrated and ESPN. Well, SI.com and ESPN are standing by their Lappen quotes, many of which were transcribed from audio recordings. Things are not looking good for the Elite XC brass as the UFC’s Dana White and Vegas State Athletic Commissioner Keith Kizer are now getting involved behind the scenes.
