Sea Dogs Defeat Sagueneens in Shootout

October 20th, 2012
CHICOUTIMI – Jonathan Huberdeau had a goal and an assist, plus the only goal in the shootout, as the Saint John Sea Dogs edged the Chicoutimi Sagueneens, 4-3, at the Georges-Vezina Centre.

Saint John (6-6) snapped a two-game losing skid while ending Chicoutimi’s (6-5-1-1) winning streak at three games.

Defenceman Jason Seed opened the scoring with his first regular season goal as a Sea Dog.

With Saint John on a power play, Seed snapped home a pass from Huberdeau seven minutes into the game.

Sags forward Laurent Dauphin tied it on a power play just over two minutes later, and the game stayed tied 1-1 after one.

Gabriel Gagnon gave Chicoutimi a 2-1 lead early in the second, burying the rebound of a point shot.

Huberdeau tied it for Saint John with under four minutes left in the period, pouncing on a Sags’ turnover and going high short side to make it 2-2.

Saint John got the lead again with four minutes left in the third when Czech winger Jakub Izacky danced into the middle of the Chicoutimi zone off a faceoff and fired a hard wrister past the glove of goalie Francis Desrosiers.

It was Izacky’s first QMJHL goal.

Controversy erupted in the final minute.

A mad scramble in front of the Saint John goal saw Sag forward Jeremy Gregoire tie the game with 40.2 seconds left.

But Saint John argued that the play should have been blown dead, as the coaches argued goalie Sebastien Auger had the puck covered.

The instant replay officials confirmed the goal, sending the game to overtime.

The extra frame featured ten shots – six for the Sags – and a Chicoutimi power play, but no goals.

Huberdeau scored the only goal of the shootout on a brilliant deke to the forehand.

Sebastien Auger made 31 stops through 65 minutes and denied all three Chicoutimi shooters in the penalty shot contest.

Saint John wraps up the three-game road trip Saturday in Baie-Comeau.
