Sea Dogs edge Cataractes in battle for first place

February 4th, 2012

SHAWINIGAN – Jonathan Huberdeau scored a power play goal with 30.9 seconds left in the third period to lead the Saint John Sea Dogs to a 2-1 victory over the Shawinigan Cataractes.

The Saint John captain batted home his own rebound to the left of the net.

The play was reviewed to make sure it crossed the line, but the goal stood as the winner.

The victory means the Sea Dogs stay in first place overall in the QMJHL, three up on Shawinigan.

Charles-Olivier Roussel had the other Sea Dog goal, also on a man advantage.

Saint John was on the power play because of a high hit on Huberdeau from Cataractes defenceman Jonathan Racine with under four minutes left.

Racine got a major penalty for checking to the head, plus a match penalty and a game misconduct.

The hit came after another check to the head penalty to Saint John’s Jason Cameron for a hit on Kirill Kabanov.

Cameron was also assessed a game misconduct.

Mathieu Corbeil earned the win in goal and first star honours with 37 saves.

Saint John is off until Saturday when they travel to PEI.

NOTES: Sea Dog scratches were Devon Oliver-Dares (broken collarbone), Ryan Tesink (knee) and Stanislav Galiev (wrist)….Roussel left the game briefly in the second period after colliding with Shawinigan forward Vincent Arseneau. He was given a penalty on the play, but Grant West served most of it while Roussel had his left arm/shoulder examined….The game was sold out….In a scheduling quirk, the two teams will face each other for a fourth time in March.

Three Stars: 1. Corbeil (SJ) 2. Le Sieur (SHA) 3. Jurco (SJ)    Top Dog: Roussel
