If there was one player who could have played on Canada’s Olympic team and didn’t, it was Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos. Now, as the season winds down and Tampa misses the playoffs, Stamkos has a chance to show how good he really is.
Heading into the weekend, Stamkos is tied with Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin for the NHL goal-scoring lead. Could Steven Stamkos win the Rocket Richard Trophy? You bet he could.

The rumours are back. And even though there is no reason to believe that an NHL franchise an make enough money to survive in a prairie city of 700,000, the Hockey News has reported that David Thomson might soon buy the Phoenix Coyotes and move them to Winnipeg.
And the Hockey News also says that move could happen by next fall. Again, my only comment is this: Believe whatever it is you want to believe.

Big Juan Diaz is ready to come back and repeat last season’s remarkable campaign with the Goldeyes when he batted .317 with a franchise record 29 homers and a franchise record 90 runs batted in.
He spent the winter hitting bombs in the Colombian League but now he’s back home in Miami getting ready for the 2010 season by going to the local batting cages. With his kids. Apparently his 8-year-old is going to be the next Juan Diaz.

The Chicago Blackhawks took a big step toward clinching a playoff berth on Tuesday night. With that 2-0 win over Phoenix, the Blackhawks put themselves into a position to clinch tonight.
The Hawks play in Columbus tonight and with a win, Jonathan Toews and the rest of the Hawks are into the post-season with eight games remaining. And with three weeks to go, there might be a chance to rest a few players before the playoffs.

When Jimmie Johnson crossed the finish line first at Bristol, it marked the end of the “wing era” in NASCAR. Starting this Sunday at Martinsville, the spoiler will return, replacing the wing on the rear of the Cup Series cars.
Believe it or not there are people who think this change could slow down Johnson’s No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet. After all, Johnson won a Series high 22 races during the wing era. Well, don’t they wish. He also won 28 in the previous spoiler era.

It will be used in the 2010 playoffs only and I guarantee it will be the best thing to happen to the NFL since Vince Lombardi.

When he played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Winnipeg-born Alexander Steen appeared to be spinning his wheels, going nowhere fast. Now, as a member of the St. Louis, Steen is having a career year.
Through 58 games, Steen has 21 goals and 21 assists and is a plus-four on a minus team. After struggling in Toronto and often being a healthy scratch, he has become a big time offensive player in St. Louis. At 26, he is developing into one of the best players on the Blues.

The Calgary Flames have an uphill battle to make the Stanley Cup playoffs but we will know by this coming Sunday whether the Flames have what it takes to reach the post-season.
The Flames started a five-games-in-seven-days stretch with a 4-3 loss at Minnesota on Sunday. They’ll play the Ducks in Calgary tonight, at the Islanders on Thursday night, at Boston on Saturday and at Washington this coming Sunday. If they don’t win three of these coming four games, they can pretty much write off the post-season.

Good-Bye Cosmo. Too Bad Wiecek Wouldn’t Join You.
Friday, March 19th, 2010
The great Cosmoidian, “Cosmo the Wonderful,” Robin “Cosmo” Grant, the most fun you can have listening to the radio without a license, signed off the Winnipeg airwaves on Friday. He’s off to Ottawa to scare the hell out of that sleepy town, but his final show was absolutely tremendous.
Too bad, one thing was missing.
A couple of weeks ago, Winnipeg Free Press sports columnist Paul Wiecek ripped 92-CITI-FM in general and Cosmo in particular for allowing Winnipeggers to jump on the air to talk about all the “Return of the Jets Rumours,” they’d been hearing for months. The particular Cosmo Show that offended Wiecek was typically entertaining and it proved that Winnipeggers really, really, really wanted the NHL to return.
Amazingly, about eight days later, Wiecek wrote a column suggesting the Phoenix Coyotes (one of the two teams rumoured to be returning to Winnipeg) might indeed be moving back to Winnipeg at some future date and even engaged in spreading the rumour that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman met with Manitoba Moose governor Mark Chipman at the Olympics in Vancouver (the Moose communications department denied a meeting took place).
Despite pulling a complete 180 — and with no apology to Cosmo — our intrepid afternoon radio voice sent an e-mail to Wiecek inviting the columnist to join him on the show to discuss the chances of the NHL returning.
Sadly, Cosmo got crickets in return. Not even a, “No thank you.” In fact, all Cos got for his invitation was a guy hiding behind the biggest media outlet in the city who didn’t even have the common courtesy to reply to the e-mail.
Too bad. It would have made for an even greater final show, a show that turned out to be one of Cosmo’s finest anyway (I particularly loved the George Belanger segment).
At any rate, good luck to you Cosmo, my friend. I’ll miss you. And there is no doubt in my mind that you’ll scare them all to death in the Nation’s Capital.

Although he has not completely made up his mind, it appears that after 18 seasons, former Winnipeg Jets captain Keith Tkachuk is nearing the end of his brilliant career.
Saying his future is now, Tkachuk wouldn’t say whether or not he was retiring at the end of the season, but he did say, “I often think about this being the end.” The Hall of Fame awaits.

The 37-year-old di Palma has always been hooked on NASCAR and although he’s a champion in Argenitina, he hopes there might be a chance that he’ll get a shot in the USA before his career ends.

Calling it “a retaliatory hit to the head,” the National Hockey League suspended Anaheim Ducks defenseman James Wisniewski for eight games without pay for that terrible hit to the face and head of Brent Seabrook on Wednesday night.
Wisniewski definitely cheap-shotted Seabrook, but an eight-game suspension after giving Alexander Ovechkin only two? The NHL justice department is completely senseless.

In NFL news, former Cleveland Browns quarterback Derek Anderson signed a two-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals yesterday while the owners will vote next week on a change to the league’s playoff overtime format, which would allow both teams to have the football if the team that wins the toss can only kick a field goal in its first possession.

Remember when the San Jose Sharks had a very comfortable 12-point lead in the Pacific Division? Well, not anymore. That’s because the Phoenix Coyotes have won six straight and have moved to within five points of the heavily favored and quite talented division leaders.
The 43-22-5 Coyotes have all but assured themselves of a spot in the post-season for the first time since 2002. Now, however, they are closing in on home ice advantage in the West. This should be a great finish.

As the Sprint Cup boys prepare for this week’s race at Bristol, the first of two weeks at the tiny ½-mile bumper car tracks, all the talk seems to be about crashes and retaliation for crashes.
And that doesn’t sit well with driver David Reutimann.
What’s been lost, Reutimann told USA Today is how great the racing has been over the first four races. And it’s true, the amount of competitive side-by-side racing has been sensational. Of course, that will also result in the occasional crash. Crash, by the way, should be the nickname of the Bristol Motor Speedway.

The Toronto Argonauts made a very interesting move yesterday. Considering they didn’t have a single quarterback in February, the Argos now have four ready to head to camp including yesterday’s signing, former Miami Dolphins starter Cleo Lemon.
From the moment he played his first game in the NFL, Lemon looked like a CFL quarterback. With his speed, mobility and arm, he could make the Argos a playoff contender in the East. Nice move by Jim Barker.

The Montreal Canadiens have had some pretty good stretches this season. They’ve even had a pair of four-game winning streaks. But not until the Olympic break, have the Habs put together so many outstanding games in succession. In fact, with six straight wins Montreal has moved into the playoff driver’s seat.
After Tuesday night’s game, a 3-1 win over the Rangers at Madison Square Garden, the Habs moved past Philly and into sixth place in the Eastern Conference. The Bruins are eighth with 74 points. With only 12 to play, the red-hot Habs are in control

It was quite a show and it wasn’t even a race. In fact, speeds exceeded 320 kilometres an hour during NASCAR’s spoiler test at Talladega Superspeedway on Tuesday.
NASCAR plans to switch from a rear wing to a traditional spoiler, perhaps as early as next week’s race at Martinsville Speedway, and Tuesday’s test was the first time a large group of cars have been on track with the spoiler. 320 kph. A new era in racing could be upon us.

So Tiger Woods has officially decided to return to the PGA Tour at the Masters and good for him. It’s been suggested he’s working with former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer on repairing his image and obviously Fleischer was smart enough to tell him to go back to doing what he does best.
In fact, if he returns to the game and plays well, people will eventually stop talking about the last stripper and/or porn star he did.

Had a nice chat with Steinbach’s Ian White a week ago after his new team, the Calgary Flames, drilled the Minnesota Wild 5-2. It’s amazing that this guy, a guy who had always wanted to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs, has completely moved to Calgary and abandoned any thought of the Leafs altogether. In such a short time.
He said he had no idea what they were thinking in Toronto and had already moved his entire family to Calgary. He’s a Flame now and all those dreams of playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs have died.

The Carl Edwards feud with Brad Keselowski is starting to affect other drivers. In fact, Denny Hamlin doesn’t think much of Keselowski.
Hamlin wrote on his Twitter account that he was dining out on Thursday night and, by coincidence, was seated two tables away from Keselowski, whom he referred to as “Brad Crashalotski.” Ouch. The boys are in Bristol this Sunday.

There is nothing more thrilling, more gut-wrenching or more excruciating that tournament college basketball. Whether it’s a conference final, the play-in game for the Madness of March or the NCAA championship game itself, it’s about as exciting a sporting experience as it ever gets. And if you’re in an office pool, it’s even more fun.
And that’s why it drives me crazy when the officiating is lousy. And believe me, with all the TV technology these days, it’s lousy a lot more often that it’s good. In fact, there were times this past weekend when it just sucked out loud. Maybe it will be better in the tournament this week. Let’s hope.
