Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
There were nine games in the National Hockey League last night… four Canadian teams were in action…
Vancouver 4 Phoenix 1
Vancouver made a statement against another playoff bound Western Conference team. Henrik Sedin remained No. 1 in scoring in the NHL with a goal and two assists. Sedin now has 104 points.
Atlanta 3 Toronto 2
The Thrashers remain two points behind Boston, Montreal and Philly in the race for the final three playoff spots in the East.
Ottawa 5 Washington 4
Alex Kovalev scored the OT winner as the Sens won their fifth straight. Jason Spezza had two goals and two assists for Ottawa while Winkler’s Eric Fehr dished out his 17th assist of the season.
Detroit 5 Edmonton 4
Detroit blew a 4-0 lead at home, but Brad Stuart scored the winner with 1:07 left in regulation.
Boston 1 New Jersey 0 (OT)
Canadian Olympian Patrice Bergeron scored the winner with 19 seconds left in overtime as the Bruins remained in eighth place in the East.
NY Rangers 4 NY Islanders 3
Marian Gaborik scored his 40th of the year as the Rangers remained four points out of the final playoff spot in the East.
St. Louis 4 Chicago 2
Winnipeg’s Alexander Steen had two goals, including the winner and added an assist. Winnipeg’s Jonathan Toews had two assists for the Hawks.
Los Angeles 2 Nashville 0
The Kings first win over Nashville since of October of ’07.
Columbus 3 Tampa 2
Canadian Olympian Rick Nash scored twice, he has 33 this season.
The Abbotsford Heat beat the Manitoba Moose 2-1 last night as the Moose split another two-game series, this time on the West Coast. The Moose will play in Toronto on Friday night.
The Bombers, who will have themselves a new stadium, sooner not later, added five prospects to the team’s training camp roster yesterday: Import defensive lineman Remond Willis, import wide receiver Kenny Strickland, import linebacker Henti Baird, non-import defensive lineman Deji Oduwole and non-import defensive back Jerry-Ralph Jules.
It will be Michigan State against Butler at 5:07 p.m. and Duke vs. West Virginia at 8 in the Final Four of the NCAA men’s basketball championship next Saturday in Indianapolis.
7:15 NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
With a 5-4 overtime victory over the powerful Washington Capitals on Tuesday night, the Ottawa Senators have now won five in a row, solidified their hold on fifth place in the East and find themselves eight closing in on Buffalo and New Jersey.
If there was one team in this league that is playing its best hockey of the year heading into the playoffs, it’s the Senators. Right now, the Sens could be the scariest fifth place team in NHL history.
8:15 NASCAR REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM NASCAR REPORT. For Rondex Limited, your 3M-loyal dealer at 177 Isabel Street. Where people, paint and performance come first.
It’s a week off for the NASCAR Sprint Cup boys. They won’t head to the start/finish line again until the Subway Fresh Fit 600 at Phoenix International Raceway on April 10.
In the meantime, Jimmie Johnson is back on top of the Sprint Cup standings. Is it possible? Could he really win five straight championships? Now that would be a dynasty.
5:15 PM COACH’S COMMENTARY
Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Afternoon Coach’s Commentary. For Rondex Limited, your 3M-loyal dealer at 177 Isabel Street. Where people, paint and performance come first.
Does Winnipeg need a football stadium? No question about it. Should three levels of government pay between $115 million and $135 million of public money to do it? Sure, why not? The government of Saskatchewan is going to spend a heck of a lot more on its new stadium.
Reality: The federal government takes your taxpayers money and spends $1 billion every single year on the CBC and CBC executives still can’t balance its budgets. I’d rather have a new football stadium in Winnipeg for a one-time investment of $135 million than a billion dollars a year on the CBC.
