Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
A report in yesterday’s Phoenix Business Journal said that the National Hockey League was working with David Thomson, the major shareholder in True North Sports and Entertainment to purchase the NHL-owned Phoenix Coyotes and move them to Winnipeg IF a deal cannot be struck with either Ice Edge Holdings or Chicago Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf to buy the Coyotes and keep them in Glendale, Arizona. In written release yesterday, NHL vice-president Bill Daly said yesterday afternoon: “Our focus continues to be on completing a transaction with local ownership that is committed to operating the team in Glendale.” In the meantime, there is smoke and fire.
There were five games in the National Hockey League last night… no Canadian teams were in action…
Buffalo 3 Boston 2
Boston remains in eighth, two points ahead of Atlanta in the race for the final playoff spots in the East because…
Carolina 4 Atlanta 1
Nashville 3 Florida 2 (OT)
Barry Trotz’s Preds are now three points ahead of sixth-place Detroit in the West.
Minnesota 3 Los Angeles 2
Anaheim 3 Dallas 1
Former Jet Teemu Selanne picked up another assist.
The Manitoba Moose went into Abbotsford last night and drilled the Heat 5-2. The two teams meet again tonight in Abbotsford, B.C.
In CFL news, Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger says it would take $52 million to repair Canad Inns Stadium and that’s why he wants to get a new stadium for the Blue Bombers built at the University of Manitoba.
It will be Michigan State against Butler at 5:07 p.m. and Duke vs. West Virginia at 8 in the Final Four of the NCAA men’s basketball championship next Saturday in Indianapolis.
Denny Hamlin won yesterday’s rain-delayed NASCAR race at Martinsville Speedway while Ernie Els won yesterday’s rain delayed Bay Hill Classic in Orlando. It was Els second straight PGA Tour win.
7:15 NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
Toronto Maple Leafs fans can criticize the deal Brian Burke made to acquire high-scoring Phil Kessel, but they’d all be wrong.
Sure, the 22-year-old Kessel cost the Leafs a first-round pick, but this weekend, he became the first Leaf to score 30 goals in a season since 2002. And he’s playing with virtually nobody. At 22, Kessel is a star. Boston won’t get a star right away no matter where that first round pick falls.
8:15 NASCAR REPORT

Denny Hamlin had the lead, stopped to pit and then won the rain-delayed NASCAR Sprint Cup Race at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia yesterday.
Hamlin gave up the lead with less than 10 laps left in order to pit for tires. Then with four new ones on his car, he rallied from ninth place to the lead in a span of just four laps. An incredible finish and an incredible comeback win for Virginia’s own Denny Hamlin.
FOR WEDNESDAY
Jimmie Johnson was ninth in the rain-delayed NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Martinsville on Monday, but that didn’t mean the four-time defending Sprint Cup champion lost any ground in the stanings.
In fact, Johnson moved up two spots in the standings and took over first place as Matt Kenseth and Kevin Harvick faltered. Now Johnson has a 14-point lead over Greg Biffle. Not surprisngly, Johnson seems quite comfortable on top.

We’ve been talking about it for months, the people of Winnipeg have been talking about it for months and the mainstream media has been saying, “Absolutely Untrue.” Well, what started as a rumour in February has now been validated by the mainstream media. Not in Winnipeg, of course, but in Phoenix.
Could the Jets be coming back? Even Scott Brown, the director of communications for True North Sports and Entertainment, won’t deny it in a story that ran yesterday in the highly-regarded Phoenix Business Journal. Check it out at rivercitysportsblog.com.
