Bombers Will Get New Stadium. Government will Loan Asper $90 Million
Wednesday, March 31st, 2010
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are going to get their new stadium. Better late than never.
More than three years after David Asper presented a plan to the Bombers to build a new stadium at the current Polo Park sight — then changed the deal to have it built at the University of Manitoba — Premier Greg Selinger said yesterday that the government of Manitoba would provide Asper with a $90 million loan to get construction going as early as next month.
The province will provide the bridge financing while Asper will get his 33,000-seat stadium built. However, if Asper can’t complete his planned commercial project at Polo Park, the project that is expected to pay the bills, the city will take all the tax money it earns from both the sale of the land where the current stadium is located and the property taxes it garners from that site in future and use it to pay the province until Asper’s $90 million debt is paid off.
It’s a risky deal and there is a real chance taxpayers’ money will be used to foot the entire bill, but it’s great news for the football club and for Asper.

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
With a 5-4 overtime victory over the powerful Washington Capitals on Tuesday night, the Ottawa Senators have now won five in a row, solidified their hold on fifth place in the East and find themselves eight closing in on Buffalo and New Jersey.
If there was one team in this league that is playing its best hockey of the year heading into the playoffs, it’s the Senators. Right now, the Sens could be the scariest fifth place team in NHL history.

It’s a week off for the NASCAR Sprint Cup boys. They won’t head to the start/finish line again until the Subway Fresh Fit 600 at Phoenix International Raceway on April 10.
In the meantime, Jimmie Johnson is back on top of the Sprint Cup standings. Is it possible? Could he really win five straight championships? Now that would be a dynasty.

Does Winnipeg need a football stadium? No question about it. Should three levels of government pay between $115 million and $135 million of public money to do it? Sure, why not? The government of Saskatchewan is going to spend a heck of a lot more on its new stadium.
Reality: The federal government takes your taxpayers money and spends $1 billion every single year on the CBC and CBC executives still can’t balance its budgets. I’d rather have a new football stadium in Winnipeg for a one-time investment of $135 million than a billion dollars a year on the CBC.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
A report in yesterday’s Phoenix Business Journal said that the National Hockey League was working with David Thomson, the major shareholder in True North Sports and Entertainment to purchase the NHL-owned Phoenix Coyotes and move them to Winnipeg IF a deal cannot be struck with either Ice Edge Holdings or Chicago Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf to buy the Coyotes and keep them in Glendale, Arizona. In written release yesterday, NHL vice-president Bill Daly said yesterday afternoon: “Our focus continues to be on completing a transaction with local ownership that is committed to operating the team in Glendale.” In the meantime, there is smoke and fire.
There were five games in the National Hockey League last night… no Canadian teams were in action…
Buffalo 3 Boston 2
Boston remains in eighth, two points ahead of Atlanta in the race for the final playoff spots in the East because…
Carolina 4 Atlanta 1
Nashville 3 Florida 2 (OT)
Barry Trotz’s Preds are now three points ahead of sixth-place Detroit in the West.
Minnesota 3 Los Angeles 2
Anaheim 3 Dallas 1
Former Jet Teemu Selanne picked up another assist.
The Manitoba Moose went into Abbotsford last night and drilled the Heat 5-2. The two teams meet again tonight in Abbotsford, B.C.
In CFL news, Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger says it would take $52 million to repair Canad Inns Stadium and that’s why he wants to get a new stadium for the Blue Bombers built at the University of Manitoba.

Toronto Maple Leafs fans can criticize the deal Brian Burke made to acquire high-scoring Phil Kessel, but they’d all be wrong.
Sure, the 22-year-old Kessel cost the Leafs a first-round pick, but this weekend, he became the first Leaf to score 30 goals in a season since 2002. And he’s playing with virtually nobody. At 22, Kessel is a star. Boston won’t get a star right away no matter where that first round pick falls.
8:15 NASCAR REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM NASCAR REPORT. For Rondex Limited, your 3M-loyal dealer at 177 Isabel Street. Where people, paint and performance come first.
Denny Hamlin had the lead, stopped to pit and then won the rain-delayed NASCAR Sprint Cup Race at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia yesterday.
Hamlin gave up the lead with less than 10 laps left in order to pit for tires. Then with four new ones on his car, he rallied from ninth place to the lead in a span of just four laps. An incredible finish and an incredible comeback win for Virginia’s own Denny Hamlin.
FOR WEDNESDAY
Jimmie Johnson was ninth in the rain-delayed NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Martinsville on Monday, but that didn’t mean the four-time defending Sprint Cup champion lost any ground in the stanings.
In fact, Johnson moved up two spots in the standings and took over first place as Matt Kenseth and Kevin Harvick faltered. Now Johnson has a 14-point lead over Greg Biffle. Not surprisngly, Johnson seems quite comfortable on top.

We’ve been talking about it for months, the people of Winnipeg have been talking about it for months and the mainstream media has been saying, “Absolutely Untrue.” Well, what started as a rumour in February has now been validated by the mainstream media. Not in Winnipeg, of course, but in Phoenix.
Could the Jets be coming back? Even Scott Brown, the director of communications for True North Sports and Entertainment, won’t deny it in a story that ran yesterday in the highly-regarded Phoenix Business Journal. Check it out at rivercitysportsblog.com.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the Free Press’s Saturday story on Premier Greg Selinger’s promise to build a football stadium for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, with Manitoba taxpayers’ money and with or without David Asper’s input.
We know the story is true because the Free Press will always write exactly what the provincial government tells it to write. Still, the story had no follow-up on Sunday and none of the people involved knew anything about the Premier’s plan. Guess we’ll have to wait for the news conference.

Heading into the weekend, Stamkos is tied with Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin for the NHL goal-scoring lead. Could Steven Stamkos win the Rocket Richard Trophy? You bet he could.

And the Hockey News also says that move could happen by next fall. Again, my only comment is this: Believe whatever it is you want to believe.

He spent the winter hitting bombs in the Colombian League but now he’s back home in Miami getting ready for the 2010 season by going to the local batting cages. With his kids. Apparently his 8-year-old is going to be the next Juan Diaz.

Believe it or not there are people who think this change could slow down Johnson’s No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet. After all, Johnson won a Series high 22 races during the wing era. Well, don’t they wish. He also won 28 in the previous spoiler era.

The Calgary Flames have an uphill battle to make the Stanley Cup playoffs but we will know by this coming Sunday whether the Flames have what it takes to reach the post-season.
The Flames started a five-games-in-seven-days stretch with a 4-3 loss at Minnesota on Sunday. They’ll play the Ducks in Calgary tonight, at the Islanders on Thursday night, at Boston on Saturday and at Washington this coming Sunday. If they don’t win three of these coming four games, they can pretty much write off the post-season.

Good-Bye Cosmo. Too Bad Wiecek Wouldn’t Join You.
Friday, March 19th, 2010
The great Cosmoidian, “Cosmo the Wonderful,” Robin “Cosmo” Grant, the most fun you can have listening to the radio without a license, signed off the Winnipeg airwaves on Friday. He’s off to Ottawa to scare the hell out of that sleepy town, but his final show was absolutely tremendous.
Too bad, one thing was missing.
A couple of weeks ago, Winnipeg Free Press sports columnist Paul Wiecek ripped 92-CITI-FM in general and Cosmo in particular for allowing Winnipeggers to jump on the air to talk about all the “Return of the Jets Rumours,” they’d been hearing for months. The particular Cosmo Show that offended Wiecek was typically entertaining and it proved that Winnipeggers really, really, really wanted the NHL to return.
Amazingly, about eight days later, Wiecek wrote a column suggesting the Phoenix Coyotes (one of the two teams rumoured to be returning to Winnipeg) might indeed be moving back to Winnipeg at some future date and even engaged in spreading the rumour that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman met with Manitoba Moose governor Mark Chipman at the Olympics in Vancouver (the Moose communications department denied a meeting took place).
Despite pulling a complete 180 — and with no apology to Cosmo — our intrepid afternoon radio voice sent an e-mail to Wiecek inviting the columnist to join him on the show to discuss the chances of the NHL returning.
Sadly, Cosmo got crickets in return. Not even a, “No thank you.” In fact, all Cos got for his invitation was a guy hiding behind the biggest media outlet in the city who didn’t even have the common courtesy to reply to the e-mail.
Too bad. It would have made for an even greater final show, a show that turned out to be one of Cosmo’s finest anyway (I particularly loved the George Belanger segment).
At any rate, good luck to you Cosmo, my friend. I’ll miss you. And there is no doubt in my mind that you’ll scare them all to death in the Nation’s Capital.
