Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM NASCAR REPORT. Brought to you by 3M Automotive and Rondex. At 177 Isabel, Rondex is celebrating 38 years of auto body supply service.
Took advantage of the opportunity to watch the Duels at Daytona on NASCAR.com on Thursday and found it to be about as netretaining as watching racing can be.
You got four camera choices and it was all in HD. Technology is changing sport – it’s especially changing the way we watch it – and what I saw last Thursday was the way NASCAR should be presented.
5:15 PM COACH’S COMMENTARY
Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Olympic Report. Brought to you by 3M Automotive and Rondex. At 177 Isabel, Rondex is celebrating 38 years of auto body supply service.
When the Olympics begin today, Canada’s “I Believe” corps will be out in full force. And that’s good. We want to believe in our athletes.
I just hope that all this pre-Olympic hype doesn’t come back to bite these athletes in the behinds if they don’t dominate the podium. Canada should do well, but there are no guarantees. Let’s cheer for our athletes, but let’s not condemn them for the national media’s hype machine if things don’t turn out to our liking.

Vonn is the No. 1 female slalom skier on the planet and a threat to win five medals in Vancouver, so if she can’t go, the Americans will miss a huge opportunity.
Meanwhile, the opening Ceremonies for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games will go tomorrow night at B.C. Place Stadium. It’s the first indoor opening ceremonies in Winter Olympic history. The Nashville Predators do love Canada’s Inuit superstar Jordin Tootoo. Earlier this week, the Predators announced that they’d signed Tootoo, to a two-year contract extension.
He will earn $1.15 million next year and $1.35 million the year after.
The feisty 27-year-old has played in only 28 games this season. He has only two goals and eight assists.
And right now he’s playing only 10 minutes a game. And he got a raise. Yeah, they love him.

Sunday, the 2010 NASCAR season begins in earnest with the 53rd running of the Great American race, the Daytona 500.
This is the race that every racing fan wants to see live once before he dies, this is the race that made Richard Petty “the King,” this is the race that started on the beach, the race that made a household name out of the NASCAR brand and this year, this just could be the race of the season on the NASCAR circuit. In Olympic hockey news, if highly-regarded Ryan Getzlaf, who suffered an ankle injury on Monday night, can’t answer the bell for the 2010 Games, expect Team Canada GM Steve Yzerman to name Philadelphia Flyers forward Jeff Carter to the team. 7:15 NHL REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
Despite some pretty good moves in the last 10 datys, the Toronto Maple Leafs fell to San ose 3-2 earlier this week and are now 11 games under .500 and in dead last place in the NHL’s Eastern Division.
The Leafs will have a solid future with Dion Phaneuf and Jean-Sebastien Giguere, but the Leafs brain trust still has a lot of work to do.

In order to qualify for the Daytona 500, stock car races get one extra chance. Every other week this season, drivers will get one, two-lap chance to qualify. At the Great American race, drivers will have two chances.
The first chance? Regular two-lap Daytona 500 Qualifying. The second chance? The Gatorade Duel at Daytona, two 150-mile qualifying races that go today, starting at 1 p.m. on SPEED Channel.

Hey folks, the Goldeyes are signing players and with Luis Alen at catcher and Aharon Eggleston in centerfield, they might be good enough to run away with the Northern League this year.
But the real news is in Major League Baseball where the Minnesota Twins have a brand new stadium and are on the verge of signing their superstar Joe Mauer to a 10-year contract. And even better than all that, forget about the cold, pitchers and catchers report to spring training in just seven days.

Let’s just say it’s almost impossible to be better than the Washington Capitals right now. I know, at various times this season, both the San Jose Sharks and Chicago Blackhawks have played the best hockey in the NHL, but right now, it’s the Caps.
On Sunday afternoon, the great Alexander Ovechkin had three goals and an assist on Mike Knuble’s game-winner as the Caps won their 14th straight game, 5-4 over arch-rival Pittsburgh. 14 straight. There is nothing more you can say.

We’ll try to help. The season started Saturday when Kevin Harvick won his second straight Bud Shootout at Daytona. The Daytona 500 goes this weekend. We’ll keep you updated all week long.

Yesterday, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced the hiring of Ken Moll as director of player personnel. He replaces John Murphy. Moll’s last football job was working for the Cleveland Browns between 1998-2005. On Thursday, unable to sign Ilya Kovalchuk with an offer of more than $101 million, the Atlanta Thrashers traded him to the New Jersey Devils for a package that included defenseman Johnny Oduya, winger Niclas Bergfors, plus prospect Patrice Cormier and a first-round pick.

It has been a remarkable year for the National Football League. Some of the highest television ratings in history during the regular season including regular No. 1 weekly finishes. Then the highest rated Pro Bowl game in a decade.
Experts believe last night’s Super Bowl might be the No. 1 watched TV show this year. That includes everything ion the tube in the remaining 11 months. There is no doubt that football is now North America’s passion.

Indianapolis Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney was preparing to test his sore right ankle for the first time during today’s final Super Bowl practice.
Freeney tore a ligament in the ankle late in the Colts’ 30-17 victory over the New York Jets in the AFC Championship Game. He is questionable for Sunday’s Super Bowl against the Saints, but Freebney himself says, don’t worry. I’ll play. In case you missed it, we’ve picked the Colts by two touchdowns.

(a) And right here in South Florida, the players met the media again yesterday. Indianapolis Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney said his ankle was improving and he hoped to play on Sunday and former Colts coach Tony Dungy said he’d be QUOTE “absolutely shocked” if the Colts lost Super Bowl XLIV to the New Orleans Saints. The big game goes Sunday at 5 on CTV.
(b) And here in South Florida, a new series of proposition bets have emerged for Sunday’s Super Bowl XLIV. Among them: How many times Reggie Bush’s girlfriend Kim Kardashian will be shown on the TV broadcast; How many times the broadcasters will refer to Hurricane Katrina; and an over-under on the number of players who are arrested the night before the game. The big game goes Sunday at 5 on CTV.
There were five games in the NHL last night… three Canadian teams in action…
Edmonton 1 Philadelphia 0
Ryan Potulny scored on a power play with 17 seconds left in regulation. After going 0-for-January, the Oilers are now 2-0 in February.
Ottawa 4 Buffalo 2

And speaking of firing, in other NHL news, two weeks ago we told you the next head coach to be fired would likely be Ken Hitchcock in Columbus. Yesterday, the Blue Jackets relieved Hitchcock of his duties and replaced him with Claude Noel. Meanwhile, Toronto defenseman and U.S. Olympian Mike Komisarek will miss the Olympics and the rest of the season. He requires shoulder surgery.
The Manitoba Moose return to action tomorrow and Saturday nights against the San Antonio Rampage, 7:30 both nights at MTS Centre. It’s the start of a four-game homestand for the Moose. Good news for the Moose yesterday. Nick Boynton, a defenceman who has played 547 NHL games – 42 this season with the Anaheim Ducks, was assigned to Manitoba yesterday.
And a little baseball news, the Detroit Tigers have re-signed their best pitcher, Justin Verlander. It’s a five-year, $80 million deal.

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
This past week, Brian Burke traded away six players to get four. Now he has three more players on the block and something could be brewing with Edmonton.
Burke would now like to move Alex Ponikarovsky, Garnet Exelby and Lee Stempniak. The Oilers could be interested. By the end of the trade deadline, the Leafs just might be a completely different team. Doubt leafs fans would be disappointed.

If it turns out that Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney can’t play on Sunday – although I stioll think he’ll play 15-20 plays at least – Raheem Brock says he’s ready to step in.
In fact, Brock said he and Rob Mathis will pick up the slack and fans won’t even notice that Freeney is missing. That’s confident talk, but it just goes to show you the Colts are confident.

There was no doubt in Tony Dungy’s voice yesterday. When the former head coach of the Indianapolis Colts was asked by radio host Dan Patrick if he thought his former team had what it takes to win Super Bowl XLIV, Dungy pulled no punches.
QUOTE: “I would be absolutely shocked if the Colts lose Sunday,” he said. “They haven’t lost a game yet this year that they were trying to win.” I agree. I like the Colts by as many as three touchdowns.

(a) And right here in South Florida, it was media day yesterday and the spotlight was on Indianapolis Colts all-pro defensive end Dwight Freeney. Freeney has a third-degree low-ankle sprain, and a torn ligament in the ankle. Asked the same question a hundred times, yesterday Freeney said he still didn’t know if he’d be ready to play, but was doing everything possible to rehab for Sunday at 5 p.m. in order to play in Super Bowl XLIV. The big game is on CTV.
(b) Yesterday was media day here in South Florida and Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning said he is not at all concerned about the big rush he’ll be facing from the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV. Saints defensive coach Gregg Williams says the Saints will beat up Manning just like they beat up Brett Favre in the NFC championship game but Manning just laughed at the threat. The big game goes Sunday at 5 on CTV.
There were nine games in the NHL last night… three Canadian teams in action…

Montreal 3 Vancouver 2
Jaroslav Halak made 45 saves to get the win.
Detroit 4 San Jose 2
Winnipeg’s Derek Meech scored the winning goal.
Washington 4 Boston 1

The Manitoba Moose are back home and return to action this Friday and Saturday night against the San Antonio Rampage, 7:30 both nights at MTS Centre. It’s the start of a four-game homestand for the Moose.
Assiniboia Downs announced its 2010 live thoroughbred meet yesterday. The big event – the Manitoba Lotteries Derby goes Monday, Aug. 2.
Finally, huge news for the Winnipeg Goldeyes yesterday as manager Rick Forney announced he had signed catcher Luis Alen. In 2007, Alen was sensational with the Goldeyes and then spent the next two years in the Mets organization. This guy can play.

In their first game after the big trade, the Calgary Flames struggled and lost 3-0 to the Philadelphia Flyers. The same cannot be said for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Tuesday night, the Leafs newest defenseman Dion Phaneuf had a fight and was plus one in his debut with the Leafs while Toronto’s brand new goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 30 saves to get the win as the Leafs shut out New Jersey 3-0. On Day 1, at least, Brian Burke sure won this trade.

Isn’t it funny how things go. If you’re Mike Kelly you get treated like crap by the local media and fired by your football team. If you’re Rex Ryan, you’re just a wild and crazy guy.
This week, the NFL fired Ryan $50,000 for making an inappropriate gesture – that’s what the NFL calls the finger – at a “fan” at an MMA event in Miami. Ryan should never have been there,. He never should have been partying all afternoon and he never should have listened to one word spoken by Dolphins fans. Other than that, he’s still working.

Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay said yesterday that he will get a contract extension with his star quarterback Peyton Manning and he will make the four-time MVP the richest player in NFL history.
“This will get done and Peyton will be the highest-paid player in the league,” Irsay said. Manning’s contract expires after the 2010 season. The next will be gigantic.

Meanwhile, back here at home, the Blue Bombers new GM Joe Mack, says he’s completed the interview process and will name a new coach before the end of the week. Meanwhile, the Canadian Football Hall of Fame announced the inductees for 2010. Among them, former Bombers Elfrid Payton and Bob Cameron.
There were four games in the NHL last night… both Alberta teams were in action…
Philadelphia 3 Calgary 0
Flames newcomer, Steinbach’s Ian White played 22 minutes, but the offence mustered only 18 shots on Philly goalie Ray Emery. Kenora’s Mike Richards scored twice and Portage la Prairie’s Arron Asham dished out his 12th assist of the year. Right after the game, Calgary traded Olli Jokinen along with forward Brandon Prust to the New York Rangers in exchange for forwards Ales Kotalik and Christopher Higgins.
Edmonton 4 Carolina 2
After 13 straight losses, the Oilers finally won a game.
Pittsburgh 5 Buffalo 4
Sidney Crosby had the hat-trick. He now has 37 goals this season, tied with Patrick Marleau for the NHL lead.
Anaheim 3 Florida 0
Former Jet Teemu Selanne scored his 17th of the year. Jonas Hiller made 33 saves to get the shutout.
The Manitoba Moose are back home and return to action this Friday and Saturday night against the San Antonio Rampage, 7:30 both nights at MTS Centre. It’s the start of a four-game homestand for the Moose.
And in baseball, it was reported on WCCO-TV in the Twin Cities yesterday that the Minnesota Twins and 26-year-old catcher Joe Mauer, the American League’s batting champion and most valuable player in 2009 are said to have agreed on a 10-year contract extension, but later reports said the two sides aren’t even close. The Twins have apparently offered $200 million. Mauer and his agent want at least $250 million over 10 seasons.

We talked yesterday how the Toronto Maple Leafs trade with the Calgary Flames was part of the rebuilding process of the Leafs. We might have been half-right.
After Monday night’s deal with the New York Rangers, it means that the Flames now have six different players in the lineup now than they did on Saturday. That’s as much or more of a rebuilding that anything the Leafs did.

The Indianapolis Colts will face the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV in South Florida on Feb. 7, at 5 p.m. The Colts are now favoured by 5 ½ points.
The key to this game is simple. If the Colts offensive line keeps Peyton Manning vertical, the Colts should score 40 against the 25th best defence in the NFL. And that will be plenty.

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.
And right here in South Florida, last night at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., the AFC topped the NFC 41-34 in the Pro Bowl. Super Bowl week begins today as both the Colts and Saints arrive here in Fort Lauderdale this afternoon.
The CFL released its 2010 schedule this morning and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will play host to their first two regular season games, both on Friday nights. They open the 2010 season on Friday, July 2 against Hamilton, followed by a matchup with the Toronto Argonauts at Canad Inns Stadium a week later, on July 9.
In the NHL yesterday, the Toronto Maple Leafs made two huge trades. First the Leafs sent their best player so far this year, Steinbach’s Ian White, along with Matt Stajan, Nicklas Hagman and Jamal Mayers to the Calgary Flames in exchange for defensemen Dion Phaneuf and Keith Aulie and winger Fredrik Sjostrom. Then, the Leafs dealt goalie Vesa Toskala and forward Jason Blake to Anaheim in exchange for goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere. Wow! At 17-28 and 11, the Leafs were desperate. Now, they’re barely recognizable.
There were six games in the NHL last night…
Pittsburgh 2 Detroit 1 (SO)
Sidney Crosby scored his 34th in regulation and the winner in the shootout.
Los Angeles 3 New Jersey 2
Winnipeg’s Travis Zajac scored his 16th of the year but the Kings went 5-0 on their Eastern road swing as Canadian Olympian Drew Doughty scored the winner late in the third.
Washington 3 Tampa Bay 2
Alexander Ovechkin scored the winner late in the third, his 35th of the year.
Phoenix 4 Dallas 2
Former Jet Shane Doan had a goal and two assists as the Coyotes won their fourth straight.
NY Rangers 3 Colorado 1
Florida 2 NY Islanders 0
Tomas Vokoun made 33 saves to get the shutout. The Islanders have lost five straight.
The Manitoba Moose put an end to their six-game road swing with a 3-1 loss to the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre Penguins yesterday afternoon. Manitoba went 1-5 on the trip and will be happy to be home. The Moose open a four-game homestand with a pair of games against the San Antonio Rampage at MTS Centre this Friday and Saturday night. Good news for the Moose yesterday. The Anaheim Ducks have re-assigned forward Dan Sexton to the Moose. He’s No. 11 in rookie scoring in the NHL.
Finally, at the Australian Open, Roger Federer won the men’s title yesterday, beating Andy Murray of Britain in the final. Serena Williams won her fifth Australian Open women’s title on Saturday.

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
It should be noted that this past weekend was one of the best ever for three of Manitoba’s brightest young hockey players.
Friday night, New Jersey’s Travis Zajac had the winning goal in overtime and three assists as the Devils beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4. Then, on Saturday, Dustin Boyd had two goals and an assist as the Calgary Flames beat the Edmonton Oilers 6-1. Then yesterday, Ian White was traded to the Flames by the Toronto Maple Leafs. That’s probably the best thing that ever happened to Whitey.

The Indianapolis Colts will face the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV in South Florida on Feb. 7. The Colts are now favoured by 5 ½ points.
Both teams appear healthy. On the weekend, New Orleans’ Pierre Thomas was nursing a rib injury while Jeremy Shockey and Darren Sharper had knee problems. In Indy, Dwight Freeney had a sore ankle. But these teams will be ready and willing on Feb. 7. But we still like Indy by a lot.

OK, so there was no defence and for the most part, the players were doing more joking around than hitting.
But just like those high-scoring NHL all-star games, the National Football League’s 2010 Pro Bowl in damp, windy Miami was an offensive delight, as the AFC topped the NFC 41-34 in a 60-minute shootout. Look, the Pro Bowl is NOT the Super Bowl, but as all-star games go, last night’s effort was not the worst.
