The sexual assault and harassment charge filed against former Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Mike Kelly has been dropped. The court told Kelly he had three months in which to take a one-day anger management course. Kelly said yesterday that he’d signed so many confidentiality agreements that he was unable to talk about anything.

More controversy for the Vancouver Canucks.Following Wednesday night’s 5-2 victory Minnesota Wild resident goon Derek Boogard told reporter Michael Russo of the Star-Tribune that Canucks coach Alain Vigneault had sent his players out to deliberately start fights with the Wild.
The Strib reported that just before his third-period fight with Boogaard, Canucks forward Darcy Hordichuk told him: “The coach is making us fight you guys.” Hordichuk later denied it, but Boogard said again yesterday that it was true. Wow! What a circus.

Great news on Thursday that the sexual assault charge against Mike Kelly had been dropped. Kelly, who got enough money out of the Bombers to give himself plenty of time to look around for a new job in the NFL, should now be pleased.
In the past month, three players: Jonathan Hefney, Derrick Doggett and Dudley Guice signed NFL contracts; and kicker Alexis Serna, who was awful working for Doug Berry, was terrific under Kelly and was signed to a new deal. Kelly’s greatest Bomber legacy is probably in the NFL.

Sunday at Mall of America Field in downtown Minneapolis, the Minnesota Vikings and their 40-year-old quarterback Brett Favre will take on the Dallas Cowboys and their 29-year-old quarterback, Tony Romo.
At his news conference yesterday Romo said he never owned a Brett Favre jersey but at his home in San Diego, he grew up enjoying Favre as a member of the Green Bay Packers. Yesterday, both quarterbacks said they were honored to play in what should be the NFL game of the week.

During his weekly news conference at the Winter Park home of the Minnesota Vikings yesterday, Brett Favre made a guarantee that the Vikings would beat Dallas in the NFL Conference final at Mall of America Field on Sunday. Well, it was sort of a guarantee. He said, “I’d be shocked if we’re not having this news conference again next week.” Yeah, that’s a guarantee.

Stories continue to appear every day about all the trade talks and all the rumours and all the “studying of the trade wire.
It’s all a crock. Unless there is a trade like the one in which Montreal sent Guillaume Latendresse to Minnesota in exchange for Benoit Pouliot – essentially the same type of player at the same salary – there will be no trades. The days of the real blockbuster have been killed by the salary cap. You can ignore all those trade rumours.

It was quite a day in Bomber Land yesterday. First, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced they had re-signed import cornerback Jovon Johnson. Then, it came to light that the Bombers had, indeed, paid out Mike Kelly the remainder of his contract. And then the club announced that young linebacker Derrick Doggett had signed a contract with the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers, the third Bomber player from last year to sign with an NFL team. Big day.
Meanwhile, there were nine games in the NHL last night… three Canadian teams in action… all of them lost.

The feud between Alexandre Burrows and the Vancouver Canucks organization and referee Stephane Auger is likely to get worse before it gets better.
Auger, the same official who slandered Shane Doan three years ago, apparently told Burrows he was going to get him before a game in Vancouver on Monday night. Auger did, making calls against Burrows that were not only ridiculous, they were phantom calls. The NHL ad better deal with this one, because Auger is out of control.

There are a lot of people – the Vegas oddsmakers included who don’t believe the Arizona Cardinals have a hope against the No. 1 seed in the NFC, the New Orleans Saints.
However, before writing off the Cards quite yet, consider this: against Green Bay last week, Kurt Warner three more touchdown passes (5) than incompletions (4). If nothing else, that should tell you Warner is ready to make a game of it.

In Olympic news, Canada named its long track speedskating team yesterday. Winnipeggers Clara Hughes, Shannon Rempel, Cindy Klassen, Brittany Schussler and Mike Ireland and Kyle Parrot, who was born in Minnedosa, will compete in Vancouver but this time Klassen will only race the distances, the 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000-metre events.
Finally, yesterday, Mark McGwire, the new hitting coach of the St. Louis Cardinals sent out a release saying that he used steroids during his big league career. K.K., the scoops just keep on coming…

The National Hockey League’s Central Scouting Bureau announced its mid-season list of draft eligible players this week and it appears to be a three-man race for the No. 1 pick.
In the midterm ranking of North American skaters, Windsor Spitfires forward Taylor Hall currently leads the Plymouth Whalers’ Tyler Seguin and Windsor defenseman Cam Fowler by a nose. Or less. It’s going to be a very strong draft this year. It could make the Toronto Maple Leafs better. If they had a first round pick.

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid says Donovan McNabb will return to the Eagles for a 12th season.
McNabb’s status was in question because the veteran has one year left on his contract and he has failed to lead Philadelphia to a Super Bowl victory in 11 seasons. The big question now is: What happens to Michael Vick?

Yesterday, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers played down the alleged facemask penalty that was missed during his overtime fumble, the one that cost the Packers the game.
While a group of Packers fans threatened to sue the NFL for the non-call, Rodgers said his team had a couple of chances to win that football game, but the defence didn’t have an answer for the Cardinals offence. Meanwhile, it was a penalty and it was missed. But what else is new in the NFL?

On Saturday…
NY Jets 24 Cincinnati 14

Finally, congratulations to the Jill Thurston Team from Deer Lodge, they beat Janet Harvey’s rink 7-6 in the final of the provincial women’s curling championship yesterday in Killarney. The provincial champs will now head to the nationals in Sault Ste. Marie at the ed of the month.

Sometimes it just takes a guy a little longer than most to get the message. This afternoon, goaltender Curtis Joseph will officially retire from the National Hockey League. He’s 42 and was a Leafs backup last season. He was dumped after the Leafs signed Jonas Gustavsson.
With 454 wins, Joseph leaves the game fourth all-time by a goaltender, trailing only Martin Brodeur, Patrick Roy and Carman Manitoba’s Eddie Belfour.

Give the Philadelphia Eagles credit. They did better than we thought.
Against Dallas’s New 21st Century Doomsday defence, the Eagles put 14 points on the board. Too bad the Cowboys put up 34. However, after seven straight games of allowing only 11 ½ points per game, the Cowboys kind of slumped against Philly. Dallas is beginning to look like a Super Bowl contender.

It will be a tremendous football game at Mall of America Field this Sunday when the Dallas Cowboys head into Minneapolis to face the Minnesota Vikings.
There has been no team hotter than the Cowboys, who blasted Philadelphia 34-14 in the opening round of the playoffs on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Vikings are coming off a 44-7 shellacking of the New York Giants, a team that owned Dallas this year. This could be the game of the year and it’s just 6 ½ hours from Winnipeg.

Just as we called it yesterday, the Crimson Tide blasted the Texas Longhorns 37-21 in the BCS Championship game at the Rose Bowl last night to win the national college football title. Texas did lose starting quarterback, Colt McCoy on the first series of downs with a shoulder injury. Of course, the 14-0 Tide still haven’t beaten 14-0 Boise State.

Had a great conversation with a friend who is a die-hard Leafs fan this weekend and he told me exactly what makes a Leafs fan a Leafs fan.
He said, if you looked at the Leafs roster and instead of saying Toronto Maple Leafs on it, it said, oh, Columbus Blue Jackets, you’d say, “Man, that team isn’t good enough to win a game,” but because it’s the Leafs, you think it’s going to win the Cup. It’s the delusional approach to every season that Leafs fans take and it’s never going to change.

The Minnesota Vikings got back to practice yesterday and they appeared well rested and ready for the post-season which starts this coming weekend at Mall of America Field.
The quarterback, 40-year-old Brett Favre says his arm, which blew out late last season, is 100 per cent and if the Vikings have taught Adrian Peterson not to fumble with the game on the line, they should be winners at home, a place where they’re already 8-0 this season.

In the BCS bowl series, it all comes down to tonight. It’s the BCS championship game at the Rose Bowl: unbeaten No. 1 Alabama faces unbeaten No. 2 Texas. 8:30 on TSN. The winner should have to play Boise State for the real championship, however.
Bit of a surprise in the Baseball Hall of Fame balloting yesterday. Andre Dawson, on his ninth try, was elected to the Hall and Robbie Alomar wasn’t. Stunning. Alomar had better numbers and won two championships while Dawson never played in a World Series. Bert Blyleven, Jack Morris, Alan Trammell, Mark McGwire, Barry Larkin, Lee Smith all missed and a lifetime .279 hitter with no championships got in. Somebody call the cops.

This first half of the season is now over and the Chicago Blackhawks would appear to be the team to beat.
The Blackhawks have the best goal differential in the League (+50) and Cristobal Huet has played very, very well in goal. But the real story is the brilliance of Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp up front and Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook and Brian Campbell on defence. That’s the best team in hockey right now.

Frazier becomes the second person to formally interview for the job after Bills interim head coach Perry Fewell had a four-hour session with general manager Buddy Nix on Monday. Frazier is in his 11th NFL season as coach and third with the Vikings. He’s a good guy who deserves a chance.

Even though it’s almost impossible to make trades, thanks to the salary cap, the Orange County Register claims Anaheim Ducks GM Bob Murray is ready to make some big moves.
In fact, according to the newspaper, he’d like to move Teemu Selanne, Saku Koivu or Scott Niedermayer, and has been trying to trade goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere since the pre-season. It’s a nice thought, trouble is, so few teams can afford any of those contracts.

This weekend the Dallas Cowboys are four-point favorites in their re-match with the Philadelphia Eagles. There is good reason for that.
Last week’s 24-0 win over Philly in the final regular season game, comes a week after they shut out the Redskins, two weeks after they held the Saints to 17 and three weeks after they kept the Chargers to 20. In fact, in the last seven weeks, Dallas has allowed just 11.5 points per game. Who cares about Tony Romo? Defence wins championships. And Doomsday is back in Dallas.

I like Doug Brown. Good guy. But he’s a player, not a fan buying tickets or a player on an opposing team playing hard, trying to get into the playoffs.
Brown contends that the Indianapolis Colts decision to roll over against the New York Jets and rest their best players in the second half because coaching scared is a valid tactic if you’ve earned a playoff berth, is legitimate. That’s great for the player being rested, but when you quit in a game that matters, it’s a fix. And the Houston Texans deserve an explanation.

There were only two games in the NHL yesterday…
New York Rangers 3 Boston 2

Los Angeles 6 San Jose 2
The Sharks eight-game winning streak came to a crashing halt at home.
The 21-14-4 Manitoba Moose have won four straight games and will play again this weekend, Friday and Saturday, against the Hershey Bears. Both games at MTS Centre at 7:30.

In the NFL, the Washington Redskins fired head coach Jim Zorn yesterday and it’s likely the Skins will announce that former Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan is the new boss
In CFL news, in a Regina court yesterday, Saskatchewan Roughriders GM Eric Tillman pled guilty to sexually assaulting his teenaged babysitter. Judge Murray Hinds will hand down his sentence today and there is a good chance it will be an absolute discharge.
And in the BCS bowl series, Boise State became only the second team to have a 14-0 season as the Broncos beat the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs 17-10 in the Fiesta Bowl. Thursday night, unbeaten No. 1 Alabama faces unbeaten No. 2 Texas in the BCS championship game.

Had the pleasure of watching Winnipeg’s Travis Zajac play against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night. Sometimes we just don’t know how good the hockey players are who have been developed right under our noses.
Zajac, who has nine goals and 20 assists and is a plus-12 this season is one of Jacques Lemaire’s favourite players in New Jersey and this 23-year-old forward is exactly the type of checker and playmaker that any coach would love. Travis Zajac, a real tribute to Manitoba’s minor hockey system.

On Monday, to no one’s surprise, the Washington Redskins fired Jim Zorn and then flew Mike Shanahan to Washington for a look-see.
When you consider the Redskins had a record that was worse than the Cleveland Browns this season, you have to figure Zorn was done. But will Shanahan make this team considerably better. If he finds a quarterback, one supposes.

It was a big day in Minnesota yesterday. First, rookie Percy Harvin was named to the NFC Pro Bowl team as a punt returner and then the Vikings were given the rest of the week off.
Head coach Brad Childress said his team needs a rest, physically and psychologically and they don’t have to report to practice until this coming Sunday. Winning big and getting the bye sure makes life sweet.

The National Hockey League doesn’t do a lot of things right, but they do put on one great event every year. The outdoor game or The Winter Classic is always a tremendous way to start the second half of the NHL season and Friday’s game in Boston did not disappoint.
To watch a hockey game at Fenway Park was spectacular in itself, but to watch 33,166 fans enjoy the Bruins 2-1 decision on Marco Sturm’s overtime winner, said a lot about how great hockey can be. The folks still aren’t ready for hockey in Phoenix, but in Boston, the NHL put on a sensational show.

The Indianapolis Colts got hosed for the second straight week, 30-7 in Buffalo on Sunday and they looked awful in the process.
Anyone who says resting players before the playoffs is a smart thing to do, has no concept of either football or history. I for one, would be surprised if the Colts get to the AFC championship. Even with the bye and homefield advantage.
