Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

THANKS K.K. WE’RE REPORTING LIVE FROM THE PRO BOWL IN SOUTH FLORIDA….

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.

And right here in South Florida, Sunday night, it’s the Pro Bowl, the annual NFL all-star game, this year at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., 7:30 on TSN2. Even though 20 per cent of the original players selected will not play, the game is a sell-out, all 70,000 seats are gone.
There were seven games in the NHL last night… three Canadian teams in action…

Ottawa 4 Pittsburgh 1
The Senators tied a club record with their eighth straight win.

Phoenix 3 Calgary 2 (SO)
Calgary has now lost nine straight games.

St. Louis 2 Edmonton 1
Winnipeg’s Alexander Steen scored the winner as the Oilers lost their 12th straight.

Chicago 4 San Jose 3 (OT)
The Hawks blew a 3-0 lead, but Troy Brouwer’s second goal of the night was the winner in overtime. Winnipeg’s Jonathan Toews dished out his 26th assist of the year.

Minnesota 1 Colorado 0
Josh Harding made 29 saves to get the shutout as the Wild won their fourth straight.

Atlanta 4 Philadelphia 3

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

Now comes an incredible test for the Vancouver Canucks. Saturday night the Canucks played in Toronto, tomorrow night they play in Montreal. It’s the first two games of a 14-game road trip for Vancouver, who had won six in a row and move into first place in the Northwest Division before setting out.

With the Olympics on, the Canucks knew this was coming. If they can play .500 hockey, they can pretty much punch their ticket to the playoffs.

8:15 NFL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE REPORT. Brought to you by 3M Automotive and Rondex. At 177 Isabel, Rondex is celebrating 38 years of auto body supply service

There was very little doubt that when Tony Dungy convinced his friend Andy Reid to give Michael Vick a second chance, it was only going to be for one year. Vick did his job, did it well and won the team’s Courage Award but that wasn’t enough to convince the Eagles to keep him.

Between now and the end of March, Philly can trade Vick. It’s likely they will do everything they can to make that happen. It is less likely they will up the option on his contract.

5:15 PM NFL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Football League Report. Brought to you by 3M Automotive and Rondex. At 177 Isabel, Rondex is celebrating 38 years of auto body supply service.

The Indianapolis Colts will face the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV in South Florida on Feb. 7. The early Super Bowl lines have the Colts favoured by as much as 5 ½ points and by as little as 4 ½ points.

This Sunday, however, it’s the Pro Bowl, the annual NFL all-star game, this year at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., 7:30 on TSN2. Yesterday, the NFL announced a sell-out, all 70,000 seats are gone. Maybe the fans don’t hate this game as much as the media thinks.

The Indianapolis Colts will face the New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV in South Florida on Feb. 7. Yesterday, the NFL announced a sell-out, all 70,000 seats are gone.

And the first event on the PGA tour starts today at Torrey Pines just north of San Diego. Phil Mickelson is the favourite. Tiger Woods is not playing but yesterday a number of Tour Pros said they expected Tiger to return to the Tour before the Masters.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

There would appear to be a battle going on in the Montreal Canadiens locker room. Apparently, defenseman Andrei Markov called out goaltender Carey Price right in the middle of the room, telling Price, if you haven’t got the heart to play, get out.

Now we hear that the Habs room is split down the middle between Price supporters and Price critics. The Canadiens have stress. And if they don’t get it figured out in a hurry, they won’t make the playoffs.

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner says he will tell the public today whether or not he will continue to play or decide to retire.

Age and injury might convince him to retire, but a contract that pays him $11 1/2 million this coming season, might be enough to convince him to play. $11 ½ million for six months work is a pretty decent incentive.

Yesterday, Brett Favre’s brother Scott told the Minnesota Star-Tribune that Brett was too beaten up to make a decision about his future and probably won’t say anything for at least a month.

Scott Favre said his brother injured both wrists, both ankles, his left leg, his ribs and his back. He added, if he made a decision now, he wouldn’t be thinking clearly.

Chicago 4 Edmonton 2
Winnipeg’s Jonathan Toews scored his 18th goal of the year just 44 seconds into the game as Chicago handed the Oilers their 11th straight loss.

Ottawa 3 New Jersey 0
Brian Elliott made 24 saves to get the shutout.

Florida 2 Montreal 1
Shawn Matthias scored both goals for Florida, the first came on a penalty shot.

Phoenix 5 Detroit 4 (OT)
Former Jet Shane Doan scored the winner in overtime. Doan also had three assists.

Atlanta 2 Anaheim 1
Former Moose Johan Hedberg made 34 saves to steal the win.

The Manitoba Moose have lost four in a row. They’ll continue their six-game road trip tonight in Worcester, Mass.

And finally, a little baseball news to brighten your cold Wednesday. The Minnesota Twins have agreed to terms with veteran slugger Jim Thome. The 39-year-old has 564 career home runs. Veteran righthander Ben Sheets signed with Oakland and was immediately handed the starting duties on Opening Day. And former Goldeyes reliever George Sherrill signed a new one-year deal with the Dodgers that will pay him $4.5 million this year. Not bad, K.K…..

And it will be the AFC Champion Indianapolis Colts and the NFC Champion New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl XLIV in South Florida on Feb. 7. The early Super Bowl lines have the Colts favoured by as much as 5 ½ points and by as little as 4 ½ points.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

Look out NHL. The Detroit Red Wings are suddenly about to get healthy. It’s been a tough year for the Wings. At some point this season, nearly all their stars have been sidelined. But now, the Wings who have remained in the playoff hunt will start to get some players back.

Niklas Kronwall returned on Tuesday, Jason Williams and Tomas Holmstrom should be back by Friday. Andreas Lilja and Johan Franzen will be back before the Oiympics. Look out!

To be fair, Super Bowl XLIV will be a high scoring game. After all, New Orleans have the NFL’s 25th best defence while the Indianapolis Colts have the league’s 18th best defence.

And while it will be high scoring, Peyton Manning will put up five or six touchdowns. Can Drew Brees match that? Maybe. Maybe not.

As we head toward the Pro Bowl this Sunday, now is the time to lay a bet on Super Bowl XLIV. It goes Feb. 7 and I’m betting early because something tells me that next week the numbers will move.

Most Vegas sports books have the Colts favored minus-5 ½ right now. The over-under is at 56 and that sounds about right. I like 42-17 Colts.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.

There were three games in the NHL last night… two Canadian teams in action…

St. Louis 2 Calgary 0
Ty Conklin made 34 saves to get the shutout as the Flames lost their seventh straight game, they’ve lost nine of their last 10.

Vancouver 3 Buffalo 2
The two Olympic goalies, Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo of Canada and Buffalo’s Ryan Miller of the United States duelled it out. The Canucks have now won five straight while the Sabres have lost four straight on the road.

Pittsburgh 4 NY Rangers 2
Evgeni Malkin had a goal and an assist.

The Manitoba Moose, will continue their six-game road trip tomorrow night in Worcester, Mass.

In Olympic news, every Canadian athlete will be eligible for bonus money if they step on the podium in Vancouver at the 2010 Winter Games. And that includes the Canadian men’s hockey team, a team in which the average salary is about $4.8 million per year. Canadian athletes will be awarded $20,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze – a practice the COC started for the 2008 Beijing Games.

The Edmonton Oilers are the last place team in the National Hockey League. They’ve lost 10 straight games and they got permission from high-priced defenseman Sheldon Souray to waive his no-trade clause.

But what are they going to do? Souray makes $5.5 million a year. Who’s going to take him and what are they going give the Oilers? The salary cap has kept costs down, but if you’re a bad team, it’s guaranteed that getting better will be almost impossible.

The talk in Minnesota has just begun. Will 40-year-old Brett Favre return to the Minnesota Vikings in 2010 or will he call it a career?

The media outside Minnesota believes he’ll likely retire, but those close to the Vikings feel he just might return. He said after Sunday’s 31-28 overtime loss to New Orleans that he wanted to go out on top. Considering his final pass was an interception, he certainly didn’t go out on top.

Here’s something to consider. The early lines for Super Bowl 44 have the Colts favored minus 4 ½ all the way to minus 5 ½. However, if the New Orleans Saints, playing in their own building, could only manage a three-point overtime victory against a team that had five turnovers, then they aren’t ready for Prime Time.

If I was in Vegas, I’d bet the entire farm on the Colts and then give my 5 ½ and run before the casinos wise up.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.

It will be the AFC Champion Indianapolis Colts and the NFC Champion New Orleans Saints in Super Bowl 44 in South Florida on Feb. 7. It’s the first time the top seeds in each conference have made the big game since the 1993 season. Yesterday….

Indianapolis 30 NY Jets 17
The Colts came back from a 17-6 second-quarter deficit to manhandle the upstart Jets. Peyton Manning finished 26-for-39 for 377 yards and three touchdowns.

New Orleans 31 Minnesota 28 (OT)
Garrett Hartley’s 40-yard field goal in OT was the difference on the scoreboard, but the difference in the game was the fact the Vikings had five turnovers on three lost fumbles and two Brett Favre interceptions.

The early Super Bowl lines have the Colts favoured by as much as 5 and by as little as 3 points. I’d take that and run.

Back at home, on Friday, the Bombers introduced their new GM, Joe Mack, and also lost another player. Wide receiver Titus Ryan, who looked like a good one, signed a contract with the Dallas Cowboys. Then yesterday, the Bombers fired player personnel director John Murphy. It was a busy weekend for the Blue.

There were three games in the NHL last night…

Pittsburgh 2 Philadelphia 1
Matt Cooke scored the winner late in the third and Brent Johnson made 27 saves to get the win.

Carolina 5 Boston 1
The Hurricanes are no longer last in the NHL. That dubious honour now belongs to the Edmonton Oilers.

Colorado 4 Dallas 0
Craig Anderson made 27 saves to get the shutout.

The Manitoba Moose, beaten 8-3 and 8-2 in Hershey this weekend, will have a couple of days off to regroup and will continue their six-game road trip on Wednesday in Worcester, Mass.

And finally, at the BDO Canadian Open of Curling, our Olympic team, skipped by Kevin Martin of Edmonton defeated Ontario’s Glenn Howard 6-4 in the final at MTS Centre and won the $25,000 first prize.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

This weekend Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke met with his staff and said he’d make a trade today if he thought it would get his Leafs into the playoffs.

Well, that would be one heck of a trade. The Leafs are now 17-26-10, eight points out of 13th place in the East and 11 points out of a playoff spot. The problem is, they really don’t have anybody to trade.

Brett Favre played a pretty damn courageous football game in a 31-28 overtime loss yesterday. He was hit 11 times in the backfield by the New Orleans Saints pass rush and yet he finished the game – at the age of 40.

However, his final pass of the season, late in the fourth quarter was intercepted and despite the miracle he almost created, it was that interception and four other turnovers as to why the Vikings aren’t going to the Super Bowl.

Yesterday afternoon, the Indianapolis Colts came back from a 17-6 second-quarter deficit to manhandle the upstart New York Jets. This one wasn’t even as close as the score.

The Colts fell behind early, but Peyton Manning just had way too much. Manning finished 26-for-39 for 377 yards and three touchdowns. He had a passer rating of 123.6. And if he gets the penalty calls in the Super Bowl that he got yesterday, that game won’t be close either.

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.

As we reported yesterday afternoon, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will hire one of the heroes from the 1980s as its new general manager and director of football operations. Joe Mack, who worked for the Bombers from 1984-87 will assume his new position, officially, at a news conference this morning at 10 a.m. Meanwhile, yesterday, Montreal Alouettes backup quarterback Adrian McPherson went public and asked for a trade. That guy can play.

Tampa Bay 3 Toronto 2 (OT)

Canadian Olympian Eric Staal had the hat-trick for the Hurricanes.

San Jose 3 Anaheim 1

Los Angeles 4 Buffalo 3 (SO)

The Manitoba Moose return to action tonight when they open a six-game road trip in Hershey.

And finally, at the BDO Canadian Open of Curling, last night. Canada’s Olympic Team, skipped by Kevin Martin of Edmonton, defending champion Glenn Howard and Norway’s Thomas Ulsrurd lead the way at 3-0. The biggest names in curling are back on the ice at 9 a.m.

If you’ve listened to 92-CITI-FM for any period of time, you’ll know that I’m a huge fan of Steinbach’s Ian White. He works hard, plays hard, can score and is extremely responsible in his own end. He’s the best plus-minus man on the Leafs and clearly Toronto‘s best player.

And that’s the problem. As good as he is, he’s not a star. But he’s the Leafs best player, by a mile.

Here’s the big number for Sunday’s first game, appropriately the AFC championship, when the New York Jets face the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Field in Indy.

That number is 1. It will be the first time that two rookie head coaches – Rex Ryan and Jim Caldwell will ever have met in an AFC Championship game.

Which player is the best financial deal in the NHL? How about Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard? Howard is 25, and has been a career minor leaguer. This year, however, he was given a chance and he’s turned into the No. 3 goaltender in the NHL with an incredible .928 goals against average in 32 games.

Howard makes $750,000 a year. He’s on his second contract and he’s a free agent at the end of next year. A big payday awaits.

This Sunday, Brett Favre will play the biggest game of the season and maybe, just maybe, the biggest game of his career.

Favre will lead the Minnesota Vikings into the NFC Championship game against the New Orleans Saints. Back in August, Favre was expected to be in this game. But now it’s here. The Vikings are 3 ½-point underdogs and yet everyone in Minnesota expects Favre to make a miracle. This could be one helluva football game.

Fran Tarkenton didn’t like it when Brett Favre became a Minnesota Viking. He sees Favre as a Packer and always will. However, Tarkenton did concede that Favre has been amazing.

QUOTE: “This is the best he has ever played. He’s throwing like he’s 25 years old. He’s moving around like he’s 25 years old. It’s unheard of. He’s 40. We’ve never seen this happen ever, ever before, so it’s remarkable.”

There were eight games in the NHL last night… only two Canadian teams in action

Atlanta 4 Toronto 3
The Leafs blew a 2-0 lead. Steinbach’s Ian White played 27 minutes and dished out an assist.

Ottawa 4 Chicago 1

Anaheim 5 Buffalo 4
The Ducks scored four in the first and hung on. Buffalo outshot Anaheim 45-30.

San Jose 5 Los Angeles 1
Canadian Olympian Patrick Marleau scored twice. He leads the NHL in goals with 34.

NY Rangers 8 Tampa Bay 2
Eight different Rangers scored and Marian Gaborik picked up four assists. The big story in New York all week turned out to be another phoney report from the Ottawa Sun saying Vincent Lecavalier was going to be traded to the Rangers. According to both GMs last night, the Sun fabricated the story.

Pittsburgh 6 NY Islanders 4
Evgeni Malkin had the hat-trick, but Sidney Crosby had two goals and four assists.

Philadelphia 5 Columbus 2
Portage la Prairie’s Arron Asham scored his fifth of the year for Philly.

Washington 3 Detroit 2

The Manitoba Moose return to action Friday night, when they open a six-game road trip in Hershey. Last night, Moose defenseman Nolan Baumgartner had some fun as Canada captain at the AHL all-star game. Canada beat PlanetUSA 10-9. Yesterday, the AHL officially welcomed its 2010 Hall of Fame class, among the inductees, former Winnipeg Jets head coach and GM John Paddock.

In the National Football League’s Conference finals, it will be the Indianapolis Colts and New York Jets in the AFC championship game at 2 o’clock this coming Sunday and the Minnesota Vikings against New Orleans Saints in the NFC final at 5:40 p.m. Sunday. Yesterday, the Buffalo Bills hired former Dallas Cowboys head coach Chan Gailey as their new head man.

And the BDO Canadian Open of Curling begins this morning at MTS Centre. All the big names of Canadian curling are here and Jeff Stoughton will be our guest today just after 8 o’clock.

The Edmonton Oilers have now lost eight straight games and after Monday’s 6-0 shellacking at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche you have to figure somebody’s head is going to roll.

However, by the sound of it, it shouldn’t be head coach Pat Quinn. Folks in Edmonton are blaming club president Kevin Lowe for signing too many long-term deals with marginal hockey players.

You just have to love the upstart New York Jets and even more than the Jets themselves, you have to love brash, ubiquitous head coach Rex Ryan.

Rex is the son of legendary defensive guru Buddy Ryan and they actually have a lot in common. However, one thing between them is decidedly different. Rookie Rex has already won two playoff games. Buddy won only two playoff games in seven years as a head coach.

Jerry Jones called it a mistake when he fired Chan Gailey as the Cowboys head coach in 1999. Gailey, who hasn’t been a head coach since then, will now get a second chance.

Yesterday, the Buffalo Bills hired Gailey as their new head coach. He’ll inherit a team that has missed the playoffs for 10 consecutive years. Gailey takes over a team that finished 6-10 this past season. Gailey went 18-14 in two seasons and was fired in Dallas. If he goes 18-14 in Buffalo, he’ll get the key to the city.

It didn’t take former Bombers CEO Lyle Bauer long to do exactly what everyone thought Lyle Bauer was going to do after he quit the Bombers. Yesterday, the Calgary Stampeders announced that Bauer has been named the club’s president and COO, replacing Scott Ackles.

While most hockey pundits love to talk about potential trades, trades that aren’t going to be made until the salary cap changes, those same pundits forget that because there aren’t many trade opportunities, coaches now become the scapegoats.

Andy Murray was dumped in St. Louis because John Davidson couldn’t change the personnel and now it appears as if Ken Hitchcock could be fired in Columbus. Hitchcock is the best coach the Jackets are going to get, but with lousy personnel and no chance to change it, the brass has to blame somebody.

It was suggested yesterday that the Minnesota Vikings don’t want to get into a shootout with the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. My answer was, “Why?”

The Vikings scored 30 points a game. Since halftime of the Bears game a month ago, the Vikings have been lights out. This is a team that has scored 111 points in the last 10 quarters. The Vikings are desperate to get into a shootout with the Saints. If it’s a defemnsive battle the Vikings will have stress.

Last Friday on the FAN in Minneapolis former Vikings head coach Mike Tice called Sunday’s blowout of the Dallas Cowboys.

Tice said, and I quote, “Under duress, Romo with revert, get sloppy and then go fetal.” And that’s exactly what happened. Vikings 34 Dallas 3. Wonder if Jerry Jones will fire Wade Phillips.

We’ve been singing the praises of Alexander Ovechkin for years, but it’s almost impossible to measure the value Ovechkin has to the Washington Capitals, the NHL and the game of hockey.

When he scored his 30th of the year on a penalty-shot late in the third period on Sunday, he brought another full house in D.C. to its feet. He’s not just the best player in the game, he’s the most exciting. One of the few players who is worth the price of admission — every night.

He entered the game as the oldest quarterback ever to start a National Football League playoff game. He left as the oldest ever to win.

Yesterday afternoon at Mall of America Field, 40-year-old Brett Favre completed 15-of-24 passes for 234 yards, four touchdowns (three to the magnificent Sidney Rice), no interceptions and a passer rating of 134.4 as the Vikings eviscerated the visiting Dallas Cowboys 34-3. It was a thing of beauty and now the Vikes are in the NFC Championship game.

Here is what our local football guru wrote in a Winnipeg newspaper this week: “The Vikes have a lot of people thinking their Week 17 walloping of the Giants was a playoff primer. Not us. Their defence is suspect and their offensive line could prove porous to a big D like the one in Dallas.”

Wow! 34-3. There is being wrong and then there is REALLY being wrong.
