Week 15 in the National Football League starts tomorrow night with the unbeaten Indianapolis Colts at Jacksonville. 7:20 on Rogers SportsNet. On Saturday, Dallas plays at 13-0 New Orleans. On Sunday afternoon, the big games include San Francisco at Philadelphia, Cincinnati at San Diego, Green Bay at Pittsburgh and on Sunday night, Minnesota at Carolina.

And the board of the Winnipeg Football Club is unanimous in its support of CEO Lyle Bauer and says it wants Bauer to stay with the team. Bauer himself, however, is yet to make a decision and my sources tell me that Mike Kelly will stay on as the team’s head coach.

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

Tuesday night, the Washington Capitals sent a message to the rest of the National Hockey League: We have the best team in the league.

The Caps went into Denver where the Northwest Division’s Colorado Avalanche play and dealt the Avs a 6-1 shellacking. This was Capital punishment. Five different Caps scored and Alexander Ovechkin didn’t. This team is more than Just Alexander the Great. It’s simply on the verge of being great. Period.

The Cleveland Browns are looking for a football czar, a man to run the team’s entire football operation and this week, Browns owner Randy Lerner met with the legendary Mike Holmgren.

If Holmgren says yes at any time, he will start immediately as the 2-11 Browns try to dig out from a dreadful decade.

This is a big week for a number of NFL teams. If the San Diego Chargers win, they clinch a playoff berth. If they win and Denver loses, the Chargers lock up a first round bye. With a win, the Cincinnati Bengals lock uo the AFC North title.

Green Bay clinches a playoff berth with a win and a loss by either the Giants or Dallas and Arizona is NFC West champion with a win and 49ers loss. This is a big week.

The San Francisco 49ers forced seven turnovers and scored 24 points off those turnovers en route to a 24-9 upset of the Arizona Cardinals in the Monday Nighter last night on the coast. With the win, the 6-7 49ers remained alive in the division and the wild card standings.

In the CFL, the Toronto Argonauts fired head coach Bart Andrus yesterday after a disastrous 3-15 season. No surprise there.

There were eight games in the NHL last night…

Toronto 3 Ottawa 2
Garnet Exelby of Ste. Anne, MB., had two assists, one of them on Francois Beauchemin’s third-period winner. Toronto has won four straiught at home.

Buffalo 4 Montreal 3
Ryan Miller made 21 saves to get the win as the Sabres are on a, 8-2 run in their last 10.

Vancouver 3 Los Angeles 1
Former Moose Mason Raymond and Ryan Kesler each had a goal and an assist for Vancouver.

Philadelphia 3 Boston 1
Philly defenseman Kimmo Timonen had two goals and an assist as the Flyers won the preview to the Winter Classic which goes in two weeks at Boston’s Fenway Park. Portage la Prairie’s Arron Asham had an assist as the Flyers scored three unanswered in the third to win it.

Detroit 3 Phoenix 2
Winnpeg’s Derek Meech played 14 minutes on the Wings defence and scored his first goal of the season. It turned out to be the winner.

Atlanta 3 NY Rangers 2 (SO)
The Rangers’ Marian Gaborik scored his league-leading 23rd goal, but Ilya Kovalchuk scored the OT winner.

Nashville 5 Columbus 3
Veteran Steve Sullivan had the hat-trick for Nashville.

Florida 7 NY Islanders 1
Nathan Horton led the Panthers with three goals and an assist.

The Manitoba Moose have a few days off before they take on the Lake Erie Monsters this Friday and Saturday at the MTS Centre. 7:30 both nights. The 16-13-4 Moose are second in the North Division.

According multiple sources, the Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to trade starter Roy Halladay to the Philadelphia Phillies as part of a three-way deal that will likely send left-hander Cliff Lee to the Seattle Mariners. According to ESPN, Halladay would then agree to a three-year $60 million contract extension. The Jays are expected to receive pitcher J.A. Happ and prospects in return.

The NHL’s board of governors are meeting this week at the Inn at Spanish Bay at Pebble Beach, California and the largest, longest discussion will be about the U.S. economy.

U.S. teams are bleeding money, especially in the non-traditional hockey markets and the league is at a crossroads: does it stay in Nashville, Florida, Tampa, Atlanta and Phoenix or move back to Canada? The owners will have a better idea later this week.

Only three teams have clinched playoff berths: Minnesota and New Orleans in the NFC and Indianapolis in the AFC. However, if the playoffs started today here’s how it would look:

In the AFC, Indy and San Diego would have the first-round byes while Jacksonville would play at Cincinnati and Denver would play at New England. In the NFC, New Orleans and Minnesota would have the byes while Dallas would play at Philly and Green Bay would play at Arizona. Wouldn’t be a bad thing if the standings didn’t change.

Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Caldwell made it pretty clear yesterday that he’s going after a 16-0 season.

Yesterday Caldwell said that if his players are healthy they will play. In other words, if Reggie Wayne, Peyton Manning, Austin Collie, any of them, can start the game they will play to win ad they’ll d it from now until the end of the season. This team is trying to go 16-0 and good for them.

Alexei Kovalev reached an interesting milestone on Saturday night. Kovalev, who went 16 games without a goal, scored three times — including the 400th of his career — as his Ottawa Senators beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2.

Kovalev has been a tremendous NHL player, but are 400 goals enough to earn a spot in the Hall of Fame? Maybe he needs to get to 500.

Brett Favre played a masterful football game on Sunday as he led the Minnesota Vikings to 30-10 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals at Mall of America Field.

With the win, the Vikings improved to 11-2, clinched a berth in the NFC playoffs and pulled to within one win or one Green Bay loss from the NFC title. He was good signing, wasn’t he?

Yesterday afternoon at Mall of America Field, Minnesota Vikings runningback Adrian Peterson made his presence known.

Peterson, who has been criticized for a number of mistakes this season, rushed for 97 yards and scored two touchdowns and then caught four passes for 43 yards as he led the Vikings to a 30-10 shellacking of the Cincinnati Bengals and a spot in the NFC playoffs. There will be no critics today.

We’ve just finished the first one-third of the season, or the first period, whatever you prefer, and here’s a quick state of the NHL.

The best teams are Washington, Chicago and San Jose, but the biggest surprises are New Jersey, Los Angeles and Nashville. The worst team is clearly Carolina. If they chose the MVP today it would be either Alexander Ovechkin or Joe Thornton and the best goalie would be Buffalo’s Ryan Miller. The rookie of the year? How ‘bout New York Rangers defenseman Michael del Zotto?

It’s interesting that there is now more talk about where teams are going to move to these days than which teams will make the playoffs.

There is talk of Oakland or San Diego moving to Los Angeles, Buffalo going to Toronto, the 49ers off to Santa Clara, Cal., and the Jacksonvolle Jaguars who have had every home game blacked out this season, moving to London, England. This next collective bargaining agreement could bring major changes to the NFL.

Wednesday night here in Tampa, Dustin Penner had another goal and was a plus-one as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 in front of another sparse crowd at the St. Pete Times Forum.

What was noteworthy about this game, however, was the play of Penner. The big 6-foot-4-inch forward has 18 goals and 15 assists and is in the Top 10 in scoring. Seventh among Canadians. Yep, he should be on the 2010 Olympic team.

After all, the Chargers are 9-3 so far this season and here’s their record in December over the past four seasons – 15-0. The Chargers never lose in December. Let’s see if they can keep that streak alive in January.

While the New England Patriots struggle to 7-5 after two devastating loses in a row, a number of NFL pundits want to blame the fourth-down decision by Pats head coach Bill Belichick in that heartbreaking loss to Indianapolis.

But in reality, we’re finding out why Belichick went for it. On Sunday, Miami quarterback Chad Henne passed for 245 yards. That’s right, Chad Henne. Belichick’s defence is a mess and he should probably go for it on fourth down all the time.

This week, the Philadelphia Flyers fired scholarly head coach John Stevens and replaced him with the man who greased the skids for Paul Maurice (the first time) in Carolina.

Peter Laviolette, the coaching parasite who convinces GMs to fire coaches and give him the job is now at the helm of the Flyers and he’s already 1-for-3. It’s unlikely he‘ll last long, but he did get another coach fired and I guess that’s a feather in his cap.

So what’s happened to the Pittsburgh Steelers? Obviously, the defending Super Bowl champions are 6-6 and have suffered at least six fourth-quarter collapses, but the biggest problem is the absence of Troy Polamalu.

The Steelers have been very weak on the back end of the defence and without Polamalu, they won’t win football games. Luckily, they get the Browns this week.

Now I have no love for the Baltimore Ravens but the most difficult thing about watching this week’s Monday Nighter was watching the officials flag the Ravens for the smallest of offences.

While the Packers picked up four late penalties to bring their total to 11, the Ravens were flagged 12 times with the game on the line. At least five of those calls were marginal. Is it reputation or did someone in stripes have a few bucks on the game?

Is there a better coach in the National Hockey League right now than Nashville’s Barry Trotz. In fact, with a team full of has-beens, no-names and never-weres, Trotz has the Preds at 16-11-2, a point ahead of Detroit, and in second place in the Central Division.

Want to know how to beat the Tennessee Titans? Force them into turnovers.

When the Titans were going 0-6, they turned the ball over 18 times. The Titans then won five straight and turned the ball over three times in total. Then on Sunday, in a 27-17 loss to Indianapolis, Tennessee turned the ball over twice, including a Vince Young interception that the Colts converted into a touchdown.

Perhaps the most intriguing story on Sunday of Week 13 unfolded in Atlanta, Ga.

In his first game at the Georgia Dome since leaving the Atlanta Falcons, Michael Vick put on a show. He scored his first touchdown of the season on a 5-yard run in the third quarter, and then threw his first TD pass of the year in the fourth quarter, connecting with Brent Celek on a 5-yarder. The fans in Atlanta hated it, but there is no doubt Mike Vick can still play pro football.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have been playing pretty well over the last couple of weeks – Saturday’s 7-2 loss to Boston aside – and a big reason has been the play of Phil Kessel.

In 14 games with the Leafs, Kessel has eight goals and five assists. Considering he’s coming off shoulder surgery and missed training camp and the start of the season, that’s pretty impressive. Maybe Kessel is worth a first-round draft pick.

The Minnesota Vikings were served notice on Sunday that there might be two speed bumps on the way to the 2010 South Florida Super Bowl.

Not only are the New Orleans Saints undefeated, but after the Arizona Cardinals spanked the Vikings 30-17 in Glendale, it’s painfully obvious that Minnesota is going to have to be considerably better in the post-season. Some teams are just destined for greatness. The New Orleans Saints seem like a team of destiny.

Yesterday in Washington the Saints were often sloppy and lethargic and with three minutes remaining in regulation, the 11-0 Saints trailed the Redskins 30-20. But a couple of breaks, one great pass from Drew Brees to Robert Meacham and finally an 18-yard field goal by Garrett Hartley in overtime gave New Orleans a 33-30 win and a 12-0 record. Yep, that’s a team of destiny.

Good deal for both sides but Savard, who is 32 and could have been a free-agent after this season, isn’t likely going to play for seven more years. Don’t worry, it’s front loaded and won’t affect the Bruins cap concerns even slightly.

Isn’t it great when the media runs a guy out of town. In Kansas City, the local media didn’t like Larry Johnson, didn’t like what he said to them and didn’t want him around. So they convinced everyone that he called them an offensive name and forced the Chiefs to release him.

Sunday, Johnson rushed for 107 yards for the playoff bound Cincinnati Bengals. If the Chiefs never make the playoffs again, it will be too soon. When the media runs your team, you’re finished.

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has worked out without any problems since missing Sunday night’s game in Baltimore with a concussion and is expected to play this Sunday against Oakland.

Roethlisberger was held out of Sunday night’s game. A team doctor recommended Saturday that the quarterback not play, and coach Mike Tomlin agreed. While the Steelers did not practice on Monday, Roethlisberger worked out on his own and did not have any problems. Good news for Steelers fans.
