San Jose 5 Washington 2
Joe Thornton scored on a penalty shot to help put the Sharks into a tie with New Jersey for the overall NHL lead.

Canada’s 2010 Olympic men’s ice hockey team was announced in Saskatoon yesterday. Sidney Crosby was naed to the Olympic team for the first time and was also named an alternate captain along with Jarome Iginla. Veteran defenseman Scott Niedermayer was named captain and one Winnipegger is on the team, of course that’s Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews. The entire roster is posted at www.92citifm.ca. Meanwhile, the Finnish team was announced yesterday. Former Winnipeg Jet, 39-year-old Teemu Selanne, will play in his fifth Olympic Games.

The Manitoba Moose, coming of a two-game sweep of the Abbotsford Heat, play again this afternoon. It’s the New Year’s Eve Game, at 4 o’clock at MTS Centre against the Texas Stars.

Canada is 3-0, the United States is 3-0 and the top two teams in Pool A will be meet in the final game of the preliminary round of the World Junior Hockey Championship tonight in Saskatoon. Canada – U.S. goes at 6:30 on TSN.

It’s Week 17 in the NFL, the final week of the regular season and it starts and ends on Sunday. The big games will be played in the AFC this week. The Jets (8-7) and Baltimore Ravens (8-7) control their own destiny for the final two playoff spots in the AFC, but five other teams –Denver (8-7), Houston (8-7), Pittsburgh (8-7), Miami (7-8) and Jacksonville (7-8) – are still alive for a postseason berth. In the NFC, the six playoff teams are set, but the seeding for the No. 2 through 6 slots is to be determined. Minnesota plays host to the New York Giants. The 92-CITI-Sports Machine will be in Minneapolis this weekend.

Finally, at the Wesmen Classic basketball tournament, Oak Park beat Sturgeon Heights 88-77 in the high school final as David Kohler scored 35 for Oak Park.

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

Canada’s Olympic men’s ice hockey team was announced last Wednesday and here’s the one thing that worries me: This team does not have a legitimate fourth line like it did in Salt Lake City.

Let’s hope head coach Mike Babcock makes it clear who will get the eight minutes of ice time per game as opposed to the guys who will get the 19 minutes. If he doesn’t, the internal bickering over ice time could be the downfall in 2010 just like it was in Torino in 2006.

There are six Indianapolis Colts on the AFC team. Favre, starter Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers are the NFC quarterbacks. Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Phillip Rivers are the AFC QBs. The Pro Bowl goes Jan. 31 at Landshark Stadium north of Miami.

Bill Polian is either a very stupid man or a man who has trouble with the truth. The vice-president of the Indianapolis Colts told an NFL Network audience that he was surprised at the fans negative reaction to the Colts, throwing a football game last Sunday.

Now I know Bill Polian and I know he’s not stupid. But I don’t believe he didn’t expect a backlash from fans after his coach dumped a perfect season and gave the New York Jets a ticket to the playoffs by benching the Colts starters in the third quarter. Sorry

Here’s the list of players selected by Hockey Canada as members of the 2010 Canadian Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team:

There were six games in the NHL last night… only one Canadian team in action…. that team lost…

Phoenix 3 Vancouver 2 (SO)
Phoenix won its 10th straight at home.

Nashville 4 St. Louis 3
Barry Trotz’s Preds beat Andy Murray’s Blues in a battle of Manitoba coaches. Despite the loss, Winnipeg’s Alex Steen had his second straight multi-point game with a goal and an assist for the Blues.

Dallas 5 Chicago 4
Despite the loss, Winnipeg’s Jonathan Toews had a pair of assists for the Blackhawks.

Anaheim 4 Minnesota 2
Bobby Ryan led the Ducks with two goals and an assist.

NY Islanders 2 Columbus 1 (SO)
Rob Schremp’s goal in the third round of the shootout was the difference.

Buffalo 4 Pittsburgh 3
Drew Stafford led Buffalo with two goals and an assist.

Canada’s 2010 Olympic men’s ice hockey team will be announced today at 11 a.m., live on TSN. Cosmo and I will talk more about the team coming up at 7:30.

The Manitoba Moose, coming of a two-game sweep of the Abbotsford Heat, play again tomorrow afternoon, the New Year’s Eve Game, at 4 o’clock at MTS Centre against the Texas Stars. Yesterday, Moose defenseman Nolan Baumgartner was named the Canadian AHL all-star team’s captain.

Taylor Hall had a hat-trick as Canada drilled Slovakia 8-2 at the World Junior Hockey Championship in Saskatoon last night to improve to 3-0 in the tournament. Canada will play the United States tomorrow night in a showdown for first place in their pool, 6:30 on TSN.

In NFL news, eight Minnesota Vikings, the most of any team, including quarterback Brett Favre and runningback Adrian Peterson were named to the NFC Pro Bowl team yesterday. There are six Indianapolis Colts on the AFC team. Favre, starter Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers are the NFC quarterbacks. Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Phillip Rivers are the AFC QBs.

Finally, Canada’s best baseball player, Jason Bay of Trail, B.C., has agreed in principle on a four-year, $66 million free agent deal with the New York Mets. Last year with Pittsburgh and Boston, the former National League rookie of the year had 36 homers and 119 runs batted in.

It appears the Pittsburgh Penguins and Sergei Gonchar are about to part ways. In fact, reports from Pittsburgh suggest that the Penguins will probably let their best defenseman test free agency this summer.

The Penguins, who have cap problems, don’t want to pay Gonchar what he’s after — $15 million over the next three years. The 35-year-old Gonchar, has five goals and 18 assists in 27 games with the Penguins this season.

It’s a big weekend in the NFL. The final week of the season begins and ends on Sunday and here are so many important games, it’s impossible to list them all.

The biggest game of all, however, will probably be the best game of the final weekend – Philadelphia at Dallas. If the Eagles win, they get the first round bye and the Vikings have to play in the opening round of the post-season. It’s going to be a great final Sunday.

Will the Indianapolis Colts never get it back? After having the gall to actually charge people money for that debacle against the Jets on Sunday afternoon, Colts chicken-livered head coach Jim Caldwell (coaching scared is the worst thing a coach can ever do) doesn’t deserve to win another game.

In fact, our pal Cosmo said it best. The National Football League should force the Colts to refund every ticket sold on Sunday. That was a rip-off and, in essence, it was thrown game. If you don’t play to win, don’t charge money for the tickets.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.

What a football game in Chicago last night. The Chicago Bears blew a 16-0 halftime lead and a 23-6 third-quarter advantage and then hung on to beat the Minnesota Vikings 36-30 in overtime in the Monday Nighter. Spectacular football game. The Vikes fall to 11-4 and will finish the season next Sunday at home against the New York Giants.

There is one week remaining in the 2009 NFL season. In the AFC, Indianapolis, San Diego, Cincinnati and New England are all in the playoffs. Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Denver still have a chance. In the NFC, it’s done: New Orleans, Minnesota, Arizona, Dallas, Green Bay and Philadelphia are all in. This week will determine who plays whom and when.

There were eight games in the NHL last night…

Calgary 4 Edmonton 1

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

Canada will name its Olympic roster tonight. It had better be good. That’s because Russia is outstanding and Sweden’s team, announced on Sunday, is very, very good.

Canada is supposed to win the podium in Vancouver in February. Is anything less than gold good enough in hockey. It might have to be. Canada is no lock to win it all, no matter who is announced tonight.

With a 23-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday afternoon, the Pittsburgh Steelers kept their playoff hopes alive.

The Steelers must win in Miami this week and then get some help from other teams but the defending Super Bowl champions aren’t dead yet. Baltimore, meanwhile, faces a win or else game at Oakland this week. Nothing like the NFL when it comes to final game drama.

The Canadian Olympic team will be announced later this week and there are still some so-called exerts out there who don’t believe that Jonathan Toews will make the team.

They may be right, but based on the way Toews has played the last month for the Blackhawks, arguably one of the two best teams in the NHL, suggests that if he doesn’t make the team, the Canadians won’t win gold.

There is one week remaining in the 2009 NFL season and while most of the playoff participants have been locked down, this is still going to be a very interesting post-season.

In fact, whenever people ask, for weeks I’ve been saying I like Indianapolis and New Orleans in the Super Bowl. And I still do. However, if it happened to be Philadelphia and New England I wouldn’t be at all surprised. That’s the beauty of the NFL.

In a very quiet way, Ottawa Senators head coach Cory Clouston asked a question I’ve been asking for months. What’s wrong with the officiating in the NHL?

Three times this season, the Senators have played a game without enjoying one power-play. That’s weird, but not surprising. If you can figure out the officiating in the NHL, don’t call me, call the head coach of the Ottawa Senators. He has problems — for a good reason.

So if you were going to hand out the NFL’s MVP award right now, who would you give it to? Most people would say Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and when a team is 14-0, there is good reason for that. Others like New Orleans QB Drew Brees.

But there is a growing number of pundits who like San Diego Chargers QB Phillip Rivers. He’s won 10 in a row and nobody is playing than he is right now. I still like Manning, but Rivers is not a bad choice.

The fan votes for the 2010 Pro Bowl have been counted and it looks like you could just send the Minnesota Vikings.

The Vikings led the fan voting in 10 of the 19 NFC positions, including all three offensive line spots — tackle, guard, and center. For a team that’s lost two of its last three games, and watched its offensive line turn porous, that’s quite an honour.

It would be pretty difficult now to call Martin Brodeur anything but the greatest goaltender in NHL history.

He broke Patrick Roy’s all-time wins record last season against Chicago and Roy’s minutes played record last month in Boston. Monday night, in a 4-0 win over Pittsburgh, he recorded his 104th career shutout breaking Terry Sawchuk’s record of 103. All hail Martin Brodeur, the king of goaltenders.

Game of the week? No question about it. On Sunday afternoon, Pittsburgh receiver Mike Wallace caught a 22-yard TD pass from Ben Roethlisberger with no time on the clock to give the Pittsburgh Steelers a 37-36 win.

Roethlisberger had 503 yards passing, but more importantly he kept the Steelers in the playoff hunt. That was one of the most important – and best – games of the season.

Yesterday, during his regular Monday news conference, Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress admitted that Sunday night’s 26-7 loss in Carolina made hi feel more like the coach of a 3-11 team than a team that was 11-3.

“We’re only two weeks away from the playoffs,” Childress said. “We must be better than that.” Indeed. Sunday night the Vikes were horrible. They won’t last long in January if they keep that up.

Pittsburgh 37 Green Bay 36

There has not been a major trade in the NHL this year and there are fewer major trades every year. However, if you read the Sun this weekend, you’d think teams were making deals daily.

Sun Media’s Bruce Garrioch now has every player in the NHL with the exception of Joe Thornton, Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin on the trading block. This weekend, the Sun had Sheldon Souray, Vincent Lecavalier, Teemu Selanne, Eric Staal, all on the block and almost every starting goalie in the NHL heading to Philly. It’s gone past just making things up to completely silly.

Despite a 26-7 loss to Carolina on Sunday night, the Minnesota Vikings clinched the NFC North and secured back-to-back division titles for the first time since the team won six in a row from 1973-78.

Say what you will about Sunday’s game, the 11-3 Vikings have had a very good year. Now they just have to learn to win on the road during the playoffs. All three losses? On the road. That’s disconcerting.

It was history in a meaningless game. Harrison broke Jim Brown’s single-game team rushing record, had the best rushing game this season and the third highest number of rushing yards in NFL history. He was a backup to Jamal Lewis just two weeks ago.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.

What an incredible day for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers: After 10 seasons at the helm of the Bombers, Lyle Bauer resigned yesterday as president and CEO of the Winnipeg Football Club. Jim Bell, V.P. of Finance and Administration for the club, will take over immediately as the CFL franchise’s interim President, while the board begins a search for a new boss. Then a bombshell out of Philadelphia where it was learned head coach Mike Kelly had been arrested and charged with assault and harassment after a dispute in his home at 11 in the morning with his ex-girlfriend. Last night, the Bomber board met and decided to relieve Kelly of his duties. So this morning, the Bombers are without a leader off the field and without a leader on it.

Meanwhile, in quiet Montreal, the Alouettes gave head coach Marc Trestman a contract extension through the 2012 season.

There were nine games in the NHL last night… three Canadian teams in action and the only winner… Calgary.

Calgary 2 Los Angeles 1
Winnipeg’s Nigel Dawes scored the winning goals as the Flames halted a three-game losing streak.

San Jose 4 Anaheim 1

Pittsburgh 3 Philadelphia 2 (SO)

Week 15 in the National Football League opened last night as the Indianapolis Colts became the third team in NFL history to start a season 14-0 with a 35-31 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. There were 10 lead changes last night. Peyton Manning went 23-for-30 for 308 yards and four TDs. Don’t forget, tomorrow night, New Orleans can become the fourth team to go to 14-0 as the Saints play host to the Dallas Cowboys. 6 p.m. on Rogers SportsNet.

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

We’ve spent a lot of time talking about the brilliance of Barry Trotz as head coach of the Nashville Predators this year, but it’s hard to ignore the outstanding work of Detroit Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock.

Currently, the Wings have top line players Dan Cleary, Johan Franzen, Valterri Flippula, Niklas Kronwall, Jason Williams, Jonathan Ericsson, Darren Helm, and now Henrik Zetterberg out of the lineup and yet the Wings have won five straight and are second in the Central Division. That’s just great coaching.

Warrick Dunn was a tremendous player when he starred at runningback for the Atlanta Falcons. Now, he’ll get a chance to be an owner.

Thursday, the Falcons announced that Dunn will be a minority owner with the team for which he played. It will be a tremendous opportunity for the NFL. The more African-American ownership in the league, the better.

With a win on Sunday night, the Minnesota Vikings will clinch the NFC North and secure back-to-back division titles for the first time since the team won six in a row from 1973-78.

Say what you will, the Vikings decision to pursue and sign Brett Favre was a brilliant move and do we hear any talk of retirement anymore?

Let’s start with baseball. We reported it on Monday, but the deal wasn’t officially completed until yesterday. In a nine-player, three-team arrangement that eventually included the Oakland A’s, the Toronto Blue Jays have sent their ace Roy Halladay to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies sent former Cy Young winner Cliff Lee to the Seattle Mariners and in the end, the Blue Jays get pitcher Kyle Drabek, catcher Travis d’Arnaud and third baseman Brett Wallace.

There were eight games in the NHL last night… four Canadian teams in action but only one of them won…

Ottawa 2 Buffalo 0
Brian Elliott made 22 saves for his second shutout in four games.

The Manitoba Moose return to action tomorrow and Saturday nights when they face the Lake Erie Monsters the MTS Centre. 7:30 both nights. The 16-13-4 Moose are now third in the North Division.

Week 15 in the National Football League starts tonight with the unbeaten Indianapolis Colts at Jacksonville. 7:20 on Rogers SportsNet. This is a big week for a number of NFL teams. If the San Diego Chargers beat Cincinnati, they clinch a playoff berth. If they win and Denver loses to Oakland, the Chargers lock up a first round bye. With a win over San Diego, the Bengals lock up the AFC North title. Green Bay clinches a playoff berth with a win at Pittsburgh and a loss by either the Giants who play Washington or Dallas who plays New Orleans. And Arizona is NFC West champion with a win at Detroit and a 49ers loss to Philly. This is a big week.

And finally, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers board will make it official this afternoon. It’s expected that Mike Kelly will return as the Bombers head coach. Still, no definitive word on the future of Lyle Bauer.

Here’s a story that fell under the radar because it occurred last weekend in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League.

Seems the defence of the CSKA Moscow was decimated by injuries so the president of the club had to suit up. The club president? Former New Jersey Devils star Viacheslav Fetisov. He’s 51. Played pretty well, too, I’m told.

It’s been quite a year for receivers in the NFL. This season, there have been 35 individual performances with at least 10 receptions in a game.

Last week, Denver’s Brandon Marshall had 21 receptions against Indianapolis, the most catches by a player in a game in NFL history. New England’s Wes Welker leads the NFL with six games with at least 10 receptions this season. If it wasn’t for Tennessee’s Chris Johnson chasing 2,000 rushing yards. this would be the year of the receiver

I love Cincinnati’s Chad Ochocinco. I also think San Diego’s Shawne Merriman is a great football player. But according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.com, they don’t like each other.

Ochocinco told San Diego reporters that when the Bengals play the Chargers on Sunday, he wants to fight Merriman. Merriman said he will lay a “legal” hit on Ochocinco, “if he gets a chance.” This will be a fun football game.
