Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.

There were six games in the NHL last night…

Columbus 3 Edmonton 2 (SO)

Pittsburgh 5 Anaheim 2
Matt Cooke led the Pens with a pair of goals. Former Jet Teemu Selanne had one of the Ducks goals.

Philadelphia 3 New Jersey 2
Philly put a halt to New Jersey’s eight-game winning streak as

NY Islanders 4 Boston 1

Tampa Bay 4 Phoenix 1
Vinny Lecavalier had two goals and an assist.

Los Angeles 4 Florida 3

The Manitoba Moose are back in action Friday and Saturday night against the Hamilton Bulldogs, 7:30 both nights at MTS Centre. Don’t forget, the Moose Super Skills Competition goes tonight at MTS Centre. 6 p.m. Tickets are just $5.

In the Monday Nighter, not much of a ball game as the Baltimore Ravens beat the lowly Cleveland Browns 16-0. The game was tied 0-0 at the half. Baltimore improves to 5-4, the Browns drop to 1-8. In other NFL news, the Cincinnati Bengals have reached a contract agreement with runningback Larry Johnson.

In the CFL playoffs, it will be the the B.C. Lions at the Big Owe to face the Montreal Alouettes in the Eastern final at noon on Sunday and then the Calgary Stampeders at the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Western Conference final at 3:30. Both games are on TSN.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

OK, for most of this season, the Ottawa Sun has been reporting – and I use that word lightly – that the Chicago Blackhawks were on the verge of trading either Jonathan Toews or Patrick Kane or both. The Sun claimed the Hawks had a cap problem and needed to move one of their stars.

Yesterday, word filtered out of Chicago that the Hawks were on the verge of signing both Toews and Kane to new contracts. Wow! How can one newspaper be so wrong so often?

8:15 NASCAR REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM NASCAR REPORT. Brought to you by 3M Automotive and Rondex. At 177 Isabel, Rondex is celebrating 37 years of auto body supply service.

Right after NASCAR announced that all Jimmie Johnson had to do in Homestead this Sunday in order to win his unprecedented fourth consecutive championship is to start and then finish 25th or better — regardless of what No. 2 Mark Martin does — along came this bit of news: We can’t have a coronation quite yet.

Martin trails Johnson by 108 points but get this, nine times in his career Martin has beaten Johnson by 108 points or more in a single race, He even did it at Homestead in the 2005 season finale. That’s why they run the races.

4:50 PM CANADIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM CANADIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE REPORT. Brought to you by Harv-Al. Custom jerseys for your team, made right here in Winnipeg.

This week there is a real chance that the 2009 Grey Cup in Calgary, could feature an all-Western matchup.

As a betting man, I’ll take Montreal any time to beat B.C. But this week, Montreal plays in the Big Owe, not Molson Stadium and that’s good news for the Lions who play every week at home in a dome. Montreal should win the game, but Casey Printers might just have a little magic left.

5:15 PM NFL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Football League Report. Brought to you by 3M Automotive and Rondex. At 177 Isabel, Rondex is celebrating 37 years of auto body supply service.

The talk doesn’t stop. Everybody has an opinion about New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick’s decision to go for it of fourth-and-two from his own 28.

I think you punt and let your defence stop Peyton Manning over 70 yards, not 28, but by the same token I understand why Belichick did it. And, you know, the more I watch that replay the more I think Kevin Faulk had possession past the 30 before he was driven back. I just wonder which official had money on the Colts.

THE REPORTS

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

Have the young, upstart Colorado Avalanche finally hit the wall? After a brilliant start, the Avalanche have now lost two straight at home and on Saturday night, they were barbecued 8-2 by the Vancouver Canucks.

The Avs are 2-4-1 in their last seven and while they’re still 12-5-3 and in first place in the Northwest, this is a team that led the second-place Calgary Flames by five points last week. That lead is now only one.

Yesterday afternoon, Phoenix proved to be the answer to the problems Jimmie Johnson suffered last week in Texas. Johnson won for the fourth time in five races at Phoenix International Raceway and for the fourth time in nine races in the Chase.

Johnson now leads No. 2 Mark Martin by 108 points in the Chase for the Sprint Cup and only needs to finish 25th or better next week at Homestead to clinch his fourth consecutive championship.

It will be the Calgary Stampeders against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Western Conference final and the B.C. Lions against the Montreal Alouettes in the Eastern final.

Yesterday, in two pretty darn good football games, B.C. beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 34-27 in overtime while the Stampeders got past Edmonton 24-21. Frankly, we’re down to the final four and these are the four best teams in the CFL.

5:15 PM NFL REPORT

Yesterday afternoon here in Minneapolis, Brett Favre took apart the Detroit Lions. OK, so it’s not like anybody thought the 27-10 outcome would be different, but the one thing we learned yesterday is that any suggestion that Favre doesn’t get along with his teammates is complete insanity.

After the game, Favre talked only about his teammates while his teammates talked only about Favre. Guess, when you’re 8-1 with two home games coming up, it’s pretty easy to like each other.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

What a terrific start for Dustin Penner, the big guy from Winkler who appears to be earning his $4.25 million salary this season.

The 6-foot-4, 235-pound centre has 11 goals and 11 assists and not only leads the Oilers in scoring, but is fifth in scoring in the entire NHL. He must really like Pat Quinn. And I doubt he misses Craig MacTavish in the least.

Great news for NASCAR late last week, when the sponsors of this report for the past three years announced a new partnership with the premier division in auto racing.

3M, a diversified technology company announced an agreement with NASCAR which would give 3M an expansion of the categories for which it holds exclusive NASCAR marketing rights to include bandages, first aid supplies, braces, supports, and hot and cold therapy products. For local NASCAR fans it also means this report should continue for many more years. Thanks 3M.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

The 2009 Hockey Hall of Fame induction was held this week and Brett Hull, Luc Robitaiile and Steve Yzerman were all inducted. All three were members of the 2002 Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings.

They join already inducted Igor Larionov and coach Scotty Bowman. It’s only a matter of time before teammates Chris Chelios, Dominik Hasek, Nicklas Lidstrom, Sergei Fedorov and probably Brendan Shanahan join them. Meanwhile, Pavel Datsyuk, continues to build a career that has him on course for the Hall. That 2002 Detroit team could very well have 10 players, or half of the roster, inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

There are two races left in the 2009 Chase for the Sprint Cup and three-time defending champion Jimmie Johnson has a 73-point lead over his teammate, 50-year-old Mark Martin.

The boys meet up this week in Phoenix for the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500. Martin won the spring race here. If he does it again, we’ll have a battle in Homestead next week. The big race goes Sunday at 1:30 on ABC.

4:50 PM BLUE BOMBERS REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS REPORT. Brought to you by Harv-Al. Custom jerseys for your team, made right here in Winnipeg.

Lyle Bauer said Tuesday that Mike Kelly will return next season. The announcement nearly killed the Sun’s Paul Friesen.

While Friesen continued to claim he – QUOTE – “patted him (Kelly) on the back,” it was such childish backhanded back patting that it reflects badly on Friesen’s maturity. Kelly will indeed be back next season. And the Bombers will challenge for the Grey Cup.

Want to hear the worst football stat ever? If every pass a quarterback attempts falls to the ground incomplete, that’s every single pass, his passer rating is a dreadful 39.6. Cleveland Browns quarterback Derek Anderson’s passer rating is 36.2.

No wonder Brady Quinn will get the start this week against Baltimore.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.

There was only one game in the NHL last night… and Jonathan Toews was back in the Chicago Blackhawks lineup

Chicago 4 Los Angeles 1
Winnipeg’s Toews, the Hawks captain, came back from his concussion last night and scored a power play goal to lead the Hawks. Winnipeg-born Duncan Keith and Winnipeg-born Patrick Sharp each had a pair of assists.

In Toronto last night, Steve Yzerman, Brett Hull, Luc Robitaille, Brian Leetch and Lou Lamoriello were officially inducted and are the newest Honoured Members of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The Manitoba Moose have lost five straight and are getting a few days off. The Moose play again Friday and Saturday nights at MTS Centre against the Toronto Marlies.

In the NFL, the Pittsburgh Steelers looked very good in the Monday Nighter. Heinz Ward caught two touchdown passes as Pittsburgh went into Denver last night and drilled the Bronocos 28-10.

And don’t forget, Friday night at the Winnipeg Convention Centre, it’s Canadian Fighting Championships 3. There are still some tickets available at Ticketmaster.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

With an injury to No. 1 goalie Cam Ward, and injury that will keep Ward out at least three weeks, the Carolina Hurricanes have signed former Manitoba Moose netminder Manny Legace to a one-year deal.

Until Monday, Legace was a member of the Chicago Wolves. The 36-year-old veteran has played in the NHL with Los Angeles, Detroit and St. Louis and has a 177-92-36 record. This guy can play.

Sprint Cup leader Jimmie Johnson had a wild, not-so-wonderful Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway. Johnson suffered a Lap 3 wreck because his Suspension collapsed and that sent his No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet to the shop for more than a hour.

The man chasing a fourth straight Sprint Cup lost 113 laps, finished 38th and watched his points lead dwindle from 181 to just 73. There are two races left in this year’s Sprint Cup. What happened Sunday in Fort Worth proved that anything can happen in NASCAR.

As a reward for that big win at Canad Inns Stadium on Sunday, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats will get to host the B.C. Lions in the Eastern semifinal at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Steel Town this Sunday afternoon.

There are a number of pundits in the West who believe the Lions will crush Hamilton and then take it to Montreal in the Eastern final in order to set up an all-west Grey Cup. Sorry, don’t buy it. The Alouettes just don’t lose at home.

How good do the Minnesota Vikings look after both the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers were clobbered this past Sunday?

Well, the Vikings get the Lions at home this weekend, the Seahawks at home next weekend and the Bears at home on the 29th. By the end of this month, the Vikings could have the NFC North sewn up and their ticket to the playoffs punched.

Had a great night on Saturday at Xcel Energy Centre in St. Paul, watching the Minnesota Wild beat Mike Modano and the Dallas Stars 3-2 in an exciting hockey game in front of 18,000 terrific fans.

One of the best players on the ice was Neepawa’s Shane Hnidy. The veteran defenseman played more than 19 minutes, assisted on the game’s first goal and finished plus-one. One day before his 34th birthday

Leader Kyle Busch ran out of gas and that allowed Kurt Busch to win the Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway yesterday. But that wasn’t the big story.

Sprint Cup leader Jimmie Johnson suffered a Lap 3 wreck that sent his No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet to the shop for more than a hour. He lost 113 laps, finished 38 and saw his points lead dwindle from 181 to just 73. There are two races left. Anything can happen in NASCAR.

I love it when athletes the mainstream media tried to destroy, play so well. We’ve been watching Percy Harvin, long criticized by a those newspaper knuckleheads who never met him and yet told every reader he was a bad guy, have a tremendous rookie season with Minnesota.

Yesterday, the hated Randy Moss was spectacular in New England’s 27-17 win over Miami while Chad Ochocinco, who is always carved by the press, was one of the best players on the field as Cinci beat Baltimore 17-7. Nice going boys. You’re fun to watch.

The big game is upon us. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers return to action this Sunday afternoon as the Bombers face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the biggest game of the year. If the Bombers win, they finish second in the East and host the Eastern semifinal on Nov. 15. Lose and they miss the playoffs. Game time Sunday is noon at Canad Inns Stadium. It’s almost a sellout and it should be a Blue Out. It’s also on TSN HD.

Week 19 in the CFL, the final week of the 2009 Canadian Football League season, begins tonight with Edmonton at B.C., 9:30 on TSN. The winner of that game guarantees himself a spot in the post-season.

Yesterday, the nominees were announced for the CFL’s major individual awards: The Bombers nominees were Jovon Johnson for most outstanding player and most outstanding special teams player, Doug Brown for most outstanding defensive player and most outstanding Canadian, Jonathan Hefney for most outstanding rookie and Brendon LaBatte for most outstanding offensive lineman.

It’s Week 9 in the NFL and while the Vikings have the bye, there are a number of big games this week – Dallas at Philadelphia, Houston at Indianapolis, Miami at New England and Baltimore at Cincinnati. The biggest, however, is probably Pittsburgh at Denver on Monday Night.

A big night in the NHL last night… 10 games…

Montreal 2 Boston 1 (SO)
Mike Cammalleri scored the shootout winner.

Calgary 2 St. Louis 1 (OT)
Dion Phaneuf scored the winner, 2:50 into OT. Winnipeg’s Nigel Dawes assisted on the winner and was a plus-two for the night.

Vancouver 5 Minnesota 2
Big night for some former Moose: Alexandre Burrows had a goal and an assist, Mason Raymond scored his sixth goal of the year and Alexander Edler had a pair of assists.

NY Rangers 4 Edmonton 2
So much for the Rangers struggling power-play. Three New York power-play goals was the difference. Marian Gaborik had a goal and an assist.

Ottawa 3 Tampa Bay 2 (OT)
Jason Spezza had the winning goal at 4:17 of OT plus two assists.

Phoenix 3 Chicago 1
Good crowd in Phoenix last night, announced at 10,362. The concussed Jonathan Toews still isn’t in the Chicago lineup.

Los Angeles 5 Pittsburgh 2
Two more goals for Anze Kopitar, the leading scorer in the NHL. A raucous sellout in L.A. as the Kings moved to 6-0-2 in their last eight.

Anaheim 4 Nashville 0
Former Jet Teemu Se;anne scored twice to overtake Hall of Famer Jean Beliveau on the career points list with 1,221.

Detroit 2 San Jose 1 (SO)
St. Andrews’ Darren Helm assisted on Henrik Zetterberg’s goal. Pavel Datsyuk scored the shootout winner.

Columbus 4 Atlanta 3
Raffi Torres led the Blue Jackets with a pair of goals.

The Manitoba Moose fell to 8-7-2 on the season, whipped 4-1 by the Aeros in Houston last night. Tonight and tomorrow night, the Moose play the Texas Stars in Cedar Park, Texas.

It’s Breeder’s Cup Weekend. The World Thoroughbred Racing Championships will be held tonight and tomorrow at Santa Anita Raceway in Arcadia, Cal.

And in golf, Tiger Woods caught leader Nick Watney with his second straight 67. Woods and Watney are tied after two rounds at the $7 million HSBC Championship in Shanghai at 10 under.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

Last week, the Columbus Dispatch reported that the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets could leave central Ohio if the team can’t fix an economic model that is causing losses of $12 million a year. In fact the Columbus, Ohio Chamber of Commerce believes the future of the Blue Jackets is in doubt.

We’ve heard the rumours (mostly fabricated) about how David Thomson, he of the Thomson-Reuters Thomsons, wants to buy the Atlanta Thrashers and move them to Winnipeg. It’s a nice thought, but the move of the Thrashers, is probably behind the moves of the Phoenix Coyotes, Florida Panthers, Nashville Predators and, now, the Columbus Blue Jackets.

This past weekend, the NASCAR Sprint Cup boys met up at Texas Motor Speedway. And it was indeed “boys.” There were no female drivers in this past weekend’s race. In the year 2009.

Isn’t it interesting then, as we wait for Danica Patrick to make a move to NASCAR, that 30 years ago, in 1979, in the same race this weekend, there were three female drivers: Janet Guthrie, Christine Beckers and Leila Lombardi. There are plenty of female broadcasters in NASCAR, but no drivers. That’s kind of sad.

Monday night, the Pittsburgh Steelers play the Denver Broncos in what should be the best game of Week 9 in the NFL.

However there is another dandy game coming up this weekend. Sunday night the 5-2 Dallas Cowboys face the 5-2 Philadelphia Eagles in Philly. The Eagles are playing confident football right now while the Cowboys are on the road for the first time in nearly a month. But here’s the big number: The Eagles are 5-1 against the spread versus Dallas the past three years. Take the Eagles to cover.

4:50 PM BLUE BOMBERS REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS REPORT. Brought to you by Western Paint and Wallcovering. 521 Hargrave Street and 1510 St. Mary’s Road.

As Blue Bombers CEO Lyle Bauer told Tom, K.K. and I yesterday morning, the Bombers will probably sell out Sunday’s game with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Amazing isn’t it, how either the Mike Kelly haters bought tickets or Mike Kelly’s act, has brought more fans to the Bombers side? The newspapers tried desperately to kill the Bombers attendance with their childishness and petulance, but it failed. Sunday, for the biggest game of the year, there should be a great crowd at Canad Inns Stadium.

The New York Yankees won the 27th World Series championship in franchise history last night with a 7-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Designated hitter Hideki Matsui was the hero, hitting a two-run homer and tying the World Series record with six runs batted in as the Yanks took out last year’s champions in six games. Matsui who hit .615 in the series, was named the Series MVP.

There were six games in the NHL last night…

New Jersey 3 Washington 2
Nicklas Bergfors scored twice in the third period to give New Jersey the win. Winnipeg’s Travis Zajac had a pair of assists for the Devils.

Calgary 3 Dallas 2 (OT)
The flu shots worked as Calgary won on the road. Jarome Iginla, who had two goals and an assist, scored the OT winner.

Colorado 4 Phoenix 1
Milan Hejduk had two goals and an assist.

San Jose 3 Columbus 2 (SO)
Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley scored for the Sharks while Dan Boyle scored the only goal in the shootout.

Buffalo 3 NY Islanders 0
Ryan Miller made 24 saves for his second shutout of the season.

Florida 3 Carolina 0
Tomas Vokoun made 31 saves for his second straight shutout.

Closer to home, the 8-6-2 Manitoba Moose play again tonight in Houston and tomorrow night in Cedar Park, Texas, against the Texas Stars.

Now to football, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are back in action this Sunday afternoon as the Bombers face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the biggest game of the year. If the Bombers win, they finish second in the East and host the Eastern semifinal on Nov. 15. Lose and they miss the playoffs. Game time Sunday is noon at Canad Inns Stadium and on TSN HD.

Week 19 in the CFL, the final week of the 2009 Canadian Football League season, begins Friday night with Edmonton at B.C., 9:30 on TSN. The winner of that game guarantees himself a spot in the post-season.

And finally, mark down Dec. 31. That’s the day Hockey Canada will announce who’s on Team Canada’s 2010 Olympic squad.

Way back in 1911 Lester and Frank Patrick went to the Wet Coast and built the Denman Arena in downtown Vancouver, gambling a huge family fortune on ice hockey on the balmy west coast. The Denman Arena was the first artificial ice rink in Canada.

Many criticized the mere idea of bringing Canada’s great winter game to B.C., but as we all know, hockey now thrives in a province that owes a debt of gratitude to the Patricks for building the first big time rink in a place that was once considered a non-traditional market. Of course, let’s be honest. Not even the Patricks could have envisioned the Olympic hockey tournament, which opens in Vancouver in less than 100 days.

This week the Sprint Cuppers meet up at Texas Motor Speedway for the Dickies 500, the eighth race in the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Meanwhile, Toyota is pulling out of Formula One racing. The world’s largest automaker announced this week it needs to cut costs and focus on its core business. Toyota follows Honda as the second major Japanese automaker to withdraw from F1 in the last 11 months. Toyota will remain in NASCAR.

There are a number of big games this week – Dallas at Philadelphia, Houston at Indianapolis, Miami at New England and Baltimore at Cioncinnati, but the biggest is probably Pittsburgh at Denver on Monday Night.

The Steelers have Troy Polamalu back and are starting to look like the defending Super Bowl champs. The 6-1 Broncos got hammered in Baltimore last week, but they’re playing at home and they’re steaming from last week’s loss. This will be an outstanding Monday Nighter.

Mike Kelly gets smarter every day. The Winnipeg media has been obsessed by Kelly’s radio outburst after Sunday’s 48-13 loss in Montreal and have ripped the guy mercilessly. However, Kelly has clearly decided that when his team loses, he’s going to take responsibility.

What a novel idea. The last guy, Doug (It’s not my job) Berry, would throw half-a-dozen players under the bus before he’d even hint that maybe he didn’t do everything humanly possible to have his team ready to play. Mike Kelly’s ability to be accountable is refreshing.

Tampa Bay 2 Toronto 1 (OT)
Ryan Malone scored the winner, at 2:21 of OT. Steinbach’s Ian White scored for Toronto.

Atlanta 5 Montreal 4
Rich Peverley led Atlanta with a goal and two assists while Brian Gionta had a pair of goals for Montreal.

Pittsburgh 4 Anaheim 3
Playing without Evgeni Malkin, the Pens won their seventh straight. Pascal Dupuis scored the winning goal.

Detroit 2 Boston 0
Chris Osgood made 29 saves to pick up his first shutout for the season. Derek Meech of Winnipeg and Darren Helm of St. Andrews each got plenty of ice time for the Wings last night.

Here at home, the Manitoba Moose were beaten 3-1 for the second straight night by the visiting Norfolk Admirals last night. The Moose play again tomorrow night in Houston.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are back in action this Sunday afternoon as the Bombers face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the biggest game of the year. If the Bombers win, they finish second in the East and host the Eastern semifinal on Nov. 15. Lose and they miss the playoffs. Game time Sunday is noon at Canad Inns Stadium and on TSN HD. And finally, yesterday the Canada West Universities Athletic Association overturned the results of three Manitoba Bisons games due to an eligibility violation. The CWUAA said that Manitoba used an ineligible player, Julian Hardy, who had suspended for four years by the University of Ottawa back in 2001. As a result, Regina is in the playoffs and Manitoba is out.

Here’s this week’s trade rumour report – rumours that NEVER seem to come to fruition – courtesy of the Ottawa Sun.

The Sun now claims, the New York Rangers are trying to trade Christopher Higgins, the Anaheim Ducks are trying to trade Todd Marchant, the Leafs are trying to trade Jason Blake and I love this one, because the Hawks have a limited amount of cap space, they’re looking to trade Jonathan Toews or Patrick Kane. Yeah, and I’m playing point guard for the New York freakin’ Knicks.

This week the Sprint Cuppers meet up at Texas Motor Speedway for the Dickies 500, the eighth race in the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Jimmie Johnson in the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet leads the Chase by 181 points over Mark Martin. Jeff Gordon won the spring race here, but as long as Johnson starts and finishes, he won’t be caught. The big race goes Sunday at 1:30 on ABC and TSN 2.

The Cleveland Browns have fired general manager George Kokinis. They probably dumped the wrong guy.

The real problem in Cleveland is head coach Eric Mangini. This is guy who ruined the Jets, now he’s killing Cleveland. He’s a bad coach and if the 1-7 Browns are ever to improve, Mangini must go.

The most interesting suggestion made during the past few weeks is that people have decided NOT to go to Blue Bpmber games because they don’t like the coach. Don’t believe it. That’s an excuse.

People don’t want to go to Blue Bomber games because (a) the parking is lousy, (b) the stadium is a broken-down dump, (c) the tickets are a tad expensive and (d) the game is on TSN HD. If people suddenly started buying tickets to watch coaches, owners would hire Jessica Beil and Kate Beckinsale.

Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley, Mr. November, hit a pair of home runs, drove in four and tied Reggie Jackson for most home runs in a World Series with five as Utley and starter Cliff Lee led the Phillies to an exciting 8-6 win over the New York Yankees in Game 5 of the 2009 Fall Classic. The Yanks still lead the series 3-2 and Game 6 goes tomorrow night, 6:57, live from Yankee Stadium. It’s on Rogers SportsNet.

There were three games in the NHL last night…

NY Islanders 3 Edmonton 1
The Islanders won their fourth in a row. The Oilers have lost five of their last six.

Philadelphia 6 Tampa Bay 2
Jeff Carter and Kenora’s Mike Richards each had two goals and an assist.

Los Angeles 5 Phoenix 3
Ryan Smyth had two goals and two assists, Anze Kopitar had a goal and two assists and Justin Williams scored once as the hottest line in hockey had eight more points.

Here at home, the 8-4-2 Manitoba Moose were beaten 3-1 by the visiting Norfolk Admirals last night. It was the first time the two teams had ever played against each other. They’ll play again tonight 7:30 at MTS Centre.

In the Monday Nighter, the New Orleans Saints whipped the Atlanta Falcons 35-27 as the Saints improved to 7-0.

And finally, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are back in action this Sunday afternoon as the Bombers face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the biggest game of the year. If the Bombers win, they finish second in the East and host the Eastern semifinal on Nov. 15. Lose and they miss the playoffs. Game time Sunday is noon on TSN HD. Yesterday, Bombers coach Mike Kelly was fined $2,000 by the CFL for comments made to the media after Sunday’s loss in Montreal.

Week 19 in the CFL, the final week of the 2009 Canadian Football League season, begins Friday night with Edmonton at B.C., 9:30 on TSN. The winner of that guarantees himself a spot in the post-season.

The Philadelphia Flyers are going to head to Sweden to watch Peter Forsberg play for Team Sweden in the International Karjala Cup hockey tournament.

Flyers scout Ilkka Sinisalo will head to Europe to watch Forsberg, a former Flyer, in a tournament that begins on Thursday. At the start of the season, the Flyers denied interest in Forsberg, but with a load of recent injuries, it appears as if they’ve changed their opinion.

Jimmie Johnson is on the verge of history and it’s unlikely any driver in the annals of NASCAR deserved it more. Sunday, by hanging at the back of the pack and letting everybody else crash, Johnson finished eighth and and all but wrapped up a fourth-straight Sprint Cup championship.

Johnson is now 181 points ahead of No. 2 Mark Martin with only three races left. It is virtually impossible for Martin, or anyone else, to catch Johnson. Four straight titles. Now that’s a dynasty.

The Minnesota Vikings might just owe their tremendous 7-1 start this season to the national U.S. media, a media that convinced every other team in the NFL that because Percy Harvin had been caught smoking marijuana, he shouldn’t be drafted.

Harvin, who is quickly turning into Brett Favre’s favourite target and is already one of the best special teams players in the NFL was passed over by 16 teams in the draft because he got caught with a bong. The media frightened away 16 NFL teams from taking a guy who could be rookie of the year. Whatever happened to real scouting?

Sunday is a huge day for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. With the Bombers getting set to take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the final game of the season, head coach Mike Kelly is as fired up as he can be. He’s defending his players and fighting with the media and that’s exactly how he likes it.

The big game, with all the playoff implications, goes Sunday at noon at Canad Inns Stadium.
