Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.

For the first time in the history of the NFL there are two teams with 11-0 records. The Indianapolis Colts and now the New Orleans Saints. Last night, Drew Brees went 18-for-23 for 371 yards and five touchdowns to five different receivers as the Saints drilled the New England Patriots 38-17 in New Orleans. You have to love what Brett Favre has done in Minnesota, but man Brees and “dem Saints” looked good.

There were eight games in the NHL last night… two Canadian teams in action.

Buffalo 3 Toronto 0
The Sabres Ryan Miller stopped 38 shots to get the win.

Calgary 5 Nashville 0
Nigel Dawes had another goal for the Flames. He has eight this season and has now scored a goal in three straight games.

Pittsburgh 5 NY Rangers 2
Mike Rupp had the hat-trick, Sidney Crosby had two goals and an assist.

Detroit 4 Dallas 1
St. Andrews’ Darren Helm scored a goal and was plus-2. Derek Meech got 15 minutes of ice time on Detroit’s defence.

Washington 3 Carolina 2
Alexander Ovechkin injured his knee in the first period, but Winkler’s Eric Fehr had a goal and an assist to lead the Caps.

Columbus 5 St. Louis 2
R.J. Umberger had the hat for the Jackets.

Colorado 3 Tampa Bay 0
Craig Anderson stopped 33 shots to get the shutout.

Atlanta 4 Florida 3
Maxim Afinogenov scored with six seconds left in regulation to give Atlanta the win.

The Manitoba Moose are back in action tonight and tomorrow night when the Rochester Americans come to MTS Centre. Game time against the Amerks is 7:30 p.m. both night.

Tiger Woods has pulled out of his own golf tournament this week. Tigers says injuries from the accident in which his wife had to pull him out of the car by breaking the windows with a golf club. Guess she was just playing a bad lie.

Congratulations to the Mennonite Brethren Hawks who beat Dakota in five sets in the boys final and Brandon’s Crocus Plains Plainsmen who beat Winnipeg Vincent Massey in four sets in the girls final at the provincial AAAA high school volleyball championships at the U of M last night.

And finally, Kevin West, the rightfielder of the Winnipeg Goldeyes the past two seasons and a big fan favourite, has signed a contract with the Cincinnati Reds and will go to spring training with the Reds Triple A farm club.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

Could the promise of the Olympics have lit the fire? Sidney Crosby has been brilliant in the last couple of weeks and that might by the signal that the 2010 Vancouver Games are now on his radar.

Last week he had the hat against the Rangers and Monday night, he scored two goals and dished out an assist IN New York. He’s had 11 points in his last five games. The Olympics appear to be calling.

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE REPORT. Brought to you by 3M Automotive and Rondex. At 177 Isabel, Rondex is celebrating 37 years of auto body supply service.

As great as Brett Favre, Tom Brady and Drew Brees have been this year, there is no quarterback in the NFL better than Peyton Manning.

In fact, at 11-0 and in the playoffs, Manning has made the Colts the best team in the NFL. He’s not just the quarterback, he’s also the offensive co-ordinator – in essence – and he’s made the Colts the first team to lock up a playoff berth. There’s you AFC MVP.

Isn’t it great when the media runs a guy out of town. In Kansas City, the local media didn’t like Larry Johnson, didn’t like what he said to them and didn’t want him around. So they convinced everyone that he called them an offensive name and forced the Chiefs to release him.

Sunday, Johnson rushed for 107 yards for the playoff bound Cincinnati Bengals. If the Chiefs never make the playoffs again, it will be too soon. When the media runs your team, you’re finished.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders must not have slept very well last night. After all, they had the 97th Grey Cup game in the bag and then lost it. As Damon Duval was missing a 43-yard field goal that would have given the Riders a thrilling 27-25 victory. However, the Roughriders were found to have had 13 men on the field, penalty flags flew and with no time left on the clock, Duval kicked a 33-yard field goal to win the game 28-27 for a Montreal Alouettes team that erased a 16-point deficit in the final 10 minutes to steal their second Grey Cup title in seven appearances since 2000. Als runningback Avon Cobourne was named most valuable player while Als receiver Ben Cahoon was the most outstanding Canadian.

There were two games in the NHL last night…

Phoenix 3 Anaheim 2 (OT)

San Jose 4 Vancouver 2

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

Usually, I don’t let teams make excuses for injuries but this year, the Edmonton Oilers get a pass.

Sunday, the Oil announced that offensive star Ales Hemsky will undergo shoulder surgery, ending his season. Hemsky joins Robert Nilsson (concussion), Taylor Chorney (ankle), Mike Comrie (mono), Denis Grebeshkov (knee), Nikolai Khabibulin (back), Fernando Pisani (colitis), Ryan Stone (knee), and Marc Pouliot (sports hernia) as the Oilers players to be hurt this season. The Oilers have already lost more than 145 man-games due to injuriues. No wonder they’re in a slump.

On Sunday afternoon, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre was remarkable. Again. Favre threw for 392 yards and three touchdowns as the Vikes amassed 537 totals yards in a 36-10 shellacking of the Chicago Bears.

Favre also set a franchise record by hitting five different receivers at least five times each. Not bad for a 40-year-old who has retired twice.

It was another remarkable day for Brett Favre yesterday.

Favre played in his 282nd consecutive regular-season game, tying Jim Marshall’s NFL record for most consecutive games played by a position player and then Favre went out and completed 32 of 48 passes for 392 yards and three touchdowns while setting a franchise record by hitting five different receivers at least five times each. The Vikings beat the Chicago Bears 36-10 and now Minnesota is 10-1 with a 40-year-old at quarterback.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.

Anthony Calvillo was named the CFL’s most outstanding player for 2009 at a ceremony in Calgary last night, but Winnipeg’s Jonathan Hefney just fell short in his bid to become the CFL’s top rookie. Now that the awards have been handed out, it’s on to the big game: The Montreal Alouettes are listed as nine-point favorites on most Vegas lines (6.5 on Sport Select) over the underdog Saskatchewan Roughriders heading into the 97th Grey Cup game in Calgary this Sunday afternoon at 5:30 on TSN.

There were three games in the NFL on Thanksgiving Thursday in the U.S. to open Week 12 of the 2009 schedule…

Green Bay 34 Detroit 12
Aaron Rodgers went 28-for-39 for 348 yards and three touchdowns.

Dallas 24 Oakland 7
Tony Romo completed 18 of 29 passes for 309 yards and two TDs.

Denver 26 NY Giants 6
The Broncos snapped a four-game losing streak. The Giants have lost five of their last six.

Don’t forget, 12 games on Sunday, including the Bears at Minnesota at 3:15 on FOX.

There were two games in the NHL last night…

Vancouver 4 Los Angeles 1
The Canucks scored three unanswered in the third to win it. Roberto Luongo made 31 saves to get the victory. Former Moose Alex Burrows scored only his second goal in the last 18 games.

Ottawa 2 Columbus 1
Jason Spezza scored only his second goal of the season for Ottawa.

There are 12 games on the schedule tonight including Calgary at Detroit, Toronto at Florida and San Jose at Edmonton.

The Manitoba Moose are back in action tonight. It’s the second game of a three-game road trip. Tonight the Moose are in Peoria, tomorrow night, they play in Chicago.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

At the end of this weekend there will be only a month before Team Canada’s roster has to be announced for the 2010 Olympic hockey tournament.

And while the names are becoming obvious: Crosby, Thornton, Nash, Getzlaff and Brodeur, there is one name that could prove to be a big surprise. When the season started, Marty St. Louis and Vincent Lecavalier were the only Tampa Bay players on Hockey Canada’s radar. But right now, St. Louis and Lecavalier might have vanished while 19-year-old teammate Steven Stamkos has a 50-50 chance to make it.

Monday night, the New England patriots journey to New Orleans to take on the Saints in what just might be the best game of the season so far.

The Pats are 7-3 but have played better, definitely on offence. The Sainst are 10-0 and one of the most offensive teams in football. I like a final of, oh, 36-33. You can pick them winner.

4:50 PM GREY CUP REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM GREY CUP REPORT. Brought to you by Harv-Al. Custom jerseys for your team, made right here in Winnipeg.

The Montreal Alouettes are listed as nine-point favorites on most Vegas lines (6.5 on Sport Select) over the underdog Saskatchewan Roughriders heading into the 97th Grey Cup game in Calgary this Sunday afternoon at 5:30 on TSN.

Frankly, I don’t see any way that the Roughriders can shut down the Montreal juggernaut. Our prediction remains unchanged: Montreal 45 Saskatchewan 10.

Yesterday, the Green Bay Packers did exactly what they had to do to keep pace with the Minnesota Vikings and lay clain to one of two wild card berths in the NFC.

The Packers drilled the Detroit Lions at Ford Field 34-12 to improve to 7-3 and remain within four points of the first-place Vikes. As great a month as the Vikings have had, the Pack has kept pace. The NFC post-season will be very intriguing.

Former Jet Teemu Selanne led the way for Randy Carlyle’s Ducks with a goal and an assist.

Matt Pettinger scored both goals as he led the Manitoba Moose to a 2-1 victory over the IceHogs in Rockford, Ill., last night. Cory Schneider was great in net as the Moose were outshot 37-21. It was the first game of a three-game road trip that continues in Peoria tomorrow night.

As soon as the new Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith and Patrick Kane contracts become public in Chicago, the trade talk will ramp up. In fact, it looks like the Hawks are already trying to deal defenseman Brent Sopel.

Sopel makes $2.33 million per season and if they dealt Sopel, they’d have the cap room required for Kane, Keith and Toews next season. Expect the Hawks to talk to Toronto and Washington.

This Sunday, the Buffalo Bills play host to the Miami Dolphins in a game in which Miami is a three-point favourite. It’s also a big day for former CFL flop Ricky Williams

In fact, if Dolphins coach Tony Sparano sticks with Williams, Miami should easily defeat a Buffalo squad that currently has major issues. Not even Ricky expected to be as important as Ricky has become.

Here’s a little feather in Winnipeg’s cap. Winnipeg born-and-raised Glen Johnson will be the head referee once again for this Sunday afternoon’s Grey Cup game in Calgary.

Johnson, who now lives in Toronto but started his career doing Winnipeg Minor Football games has turned into the best official in the CFL and as a reward, he’ll do his ninth Grey Cup game in this his 20th season in the league.

This Sunday at 3:15 in the Fox game of the week, the 9-1 Minnesota Vikings play host to Izzy Idonije and the 4-6 Chicago Bears.

These teams hate each other so much, Minneapolis has to hide the bears in the state zoo so Vikings fans don’t throw stuff on them. But here’s the interesting stat: The home team has won 11 of the last 13 meetings. The only question about this one is whether or not the Vikings cover the 10 ½ point spread.

Only one game in the NHL last night…

Montreal 5 Columbus 3
Marc-Andre Bergeron led the Habs with a pair.

There are 14 games tonight including Ottawa at New Jersey, Toronto at Tampa, Montreal at Pittsburgh, Phoenix at Calgary. L.A. at Edmonton and Boston right down the road against Minnesota.

The Manitoba Moose, are back in action tonight when they play the Rockford IceHogs in the first game of a three-game road trip.

The Montreal Alouettes are listed as nine-point favorites on most Vegas lines (6.5 on Sport Select) over the underdog Saskatchewan Roughriders heading into the 97th Grey Cup game in Calgary this Sunday afternoon at 5:30 on TSN. Remember on Sunday, the Bears are in Minnesota at 3:15 on FOX.

Finally, the National League’s most valuable player was named yesterday and no doubt about it, the unanimous choice was St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols. It was the third MVP of Pujols career and his second in a row.

This story came across my desk yesterday. According to the Toronto Star, veteran forwards Jason Blake and Lee Stempniak could be in their final season with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Wow. Bet if you asked them, they’d be happy to leave right now. The Leafs are 3-11-7 and not going anywhere soon. Neither Jason Blake nor Lee Stempniak will ever win a Stanley Cup in Toronto.

How about the amazing turnaround of the San Diego Chargers?

The Chargers were 3 ½ games out of first in the AFC West just 34 days ago after a Week 6 loss at home to Denver, but with that 32-3 victory over the Broncos last Sunday, the Chargers have now won five straight and moved into first place in the division.

4:50 PM GREY CUP REPORT

Here’s a stat that you didn’t read in the local newspapers this year, not surprising, of course, but it is a stat that tells you something about how good the Winnipeg Blue Bombers offensive line turned out to be.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats were sacked once every 15.6 passing plays in 2009. The Montreal Alouettes were sacked once every 18.3 passing plays and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers were sacked once every 22.5 passing plays. Clearly, this Bomber team is just one quarterback away from playing in next year’s Grey Cup game in Edmonton.

The Tennessee Titans have made an incredible turnaround this season.

From the moment Vince Young was named starting quarterback, the Titans have gone 4-0 to get back to 4-6 and give themselves a shot at the Wild Card.

After winning three games on the road this week in Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver, is there any doubt that the Chicago Blackhawks are the best team in the NHL right now?

Amazingly, the 14-5-2 Hawks swept their Western trip without second line centre Dave Bolland, leading penalty killer Adam Burish and their No. 1 free-agent Marian Hossa. Hossa will play on Thursday. The Hawks will be even better.

Hey, didn’t you love it last week when every football pundit in America called New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick an idiot for going for it on fourth and two against Indy. Some of them thought Belichick’s decision would haunt the Pats for the rest of the season.

As usual, these donkeys were wrong again. Case in point, Sunday’s decisive 31-14 barbecuing of the New York Jets. The Pats are 7-3. They’ll finish the year 12-4. Who’ll remember fourth down way back in Game 9?

The Canadian Football League’s 2009 mantra is this: The Canadian Football League is our league. It’s built on a tradition as proud, staged on a field as broad, and played at a pace as exciting as the country we are proud to call home.

Which is fine, except for one thing: The CFL is starting to talk once again about adding more Americans to the lineups and reducing the number of Canadians in the ratio. If the league does that, you can take the proud out the mantra. Unless, of course, you want to call it just another proud American league.

If you base greatness on the number of weapons a team has, then the Minnesota Vikings might be the greatest team in the NFL today.

In fact, it’s unlikely even the unbeaten New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts can claim to have seven of the leading weapons in the game. Bret Favre does. In fact, does any team have more great offensive players than Minnesota: Harvin, Rice, Berrian, Peterson, Taylor and Shiancoe. No team in the NFL can touch that group.

Tom Brady went 28-for-41 for 310 yards and a touchdown. The Pats looked very good despite last week’s fourth-down controversy. Wes Welker, 15 catches for 192 yards.

San Diego 32 Denver 3
The Broncos have lost four straight.

Arizona 21 St. Louis 13

Last night, Philadelphia beat Chicago 24-20 and tonight in the Monday Nighter, it will be Tennessee at Houston in what should be a great football game.

In auto racing, Denny Hamlin won the final NASCAR Sprint Cup race of the 2009 season – the Ford 400 at Miami-Homestead Speedway – but it was the man who finished fifth who made history. Jimmie Johnson won his fourth consecutive Sprint Cup championship, the first driver in the 61-year history of NASCAR to win four straight Cup series titles.

Oh my goodness are the Detroit Red Wings ever in trouble.

The banged-up Wings announced yesterday they’d lost defenseman Niklas Kronwall for four to eight weeks with a sprained ligament in his left knee after a knee-to-knee collision with Montreal’s Georges Laraque. Detroit has already been without Johan Franzen, Valterri Flippula and Jason Williams because of injuries.

Denny Hamlin won the Ford 400 at Miami-Homestead Speedway in South Florida yesterday, but the real story was the man who finished fifth.

With a smooth, easy race, Jimmie Johnson made NASCAR history yesterday by winning his fourth consecutive Sprint Cup. Cal Yarborough won the Cup series three times, but Jimmie Johnson is alone atop the heap. The greatest stock car racer of all time.

There is absolutely no doubt which teams are the two best in the CFL. Yesterday afternoon in the conference finals, Montreal massacred B.C. 56-18 while Saskatchewan ripped the Calgary Stampeders 27-11.

Next week, in the Grey Cup, there will be no phonies. These two teams are the genuine articles. Of course, if Saskatchewan wins the Cup, it will be the upset of the year.

How spectacular is Brett Favre? Yesterday, in only three-quarters of work against the Seattle Seahawks, Favre went 22-for-25 for 213 yards, no interceptions and four touchdowns – all to different receivers. His passers rating was 141.7.

The Vikings won 35-9 as Tarvaris Jackson mopped up and threw another TD pass to Sidney Rice – his second TD of the day. But the story was Favre. At 40, he has his team at 9-1. There’s your MVP.

We’re past the quarter pole of this NHL season and there are some trends. The biggest surprise is the New Jersey Devils while the biggest flop is clearly the Toronto Maple Leafs. The most exciting teams are Washington and Pittsburgh while the dullest are clearly St. Louis and Nashville – but for good reason.

And the best players through the first quarter? Anze Kopitar, Alexander Ovechkin, Joe Thornton and Marian Gaborik. The top goalie? Tampa’s Antero Nittymaki.

Despite all the bad things that have happened this year, Buffalo Bills elderly owner Ralph Wilson says he’s going to clean up the mess and he vows to do it with a high profile coach.

In fact, Wilson is looking to hire either Mike Shanahan or Bill Cowher when the season ends. No doubt, both would make the decisions necessary to turn around a struggling franchise.

Here are my picks for the weekend as the 2009 Division Finals take place in Montreal and Regina. I like Saskatchewan to win the West at home in a 34-31 thriller with Calgary. This will be a great football game.

And in the East, you have to go with Montreal, but I’m going to have a least one Sport Select ticket with B.C. on it. I have this funny feeling that Casey Printers and the Lions might put up 40 on Sunday.

There will be thousands of Manitobans heading to Minnesota this weekend for the Vikings-Seahawks game and here’s what they can expect as the Vikes go to 9-1.

The Vikings are undefeated in the Dome while the Seahawks have yet to win a road game. Brett Favre and Sidney Rice have formed a nice relationship and Adrian Peterson doesn’t have much to run against. Vikings 34-Seahawks 17.

On Tuesday night of this week, the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in a shootout. For Habs goalie Carey Price, all he needs to do is get his team to extra time.

Montreal has a record of 10-11-0 this season, of their 10 wins, eight have come in either overtime or the shootout. Amazing, the Habs are 8-0 in extra time this season.

Alexander Ovechkin returned from an upper body injury on Tuesday night, scored a goal and made the Washington Capitals a threat to win the Stanley Cup again.

With Ovechkin in the lineup, the Caps went into New York and won 4-2 on Tuesday. Despite being out more than two weeks, Ovecjkin scored his 15th goal of the year. He’s not only the most exciting player in the game, he’s probably the most valuable.

In the West this week, the Calgary-Saskatchewan game will be one of the most interesting of the season. In Montreal, however, it will be downright crazy.

In fact, this game won’t be close if the Lions can’t contain Anthony Calvillo, the Eastern Conference nominee for the CFL’s most outstanding player award.

Calvillo’ completed a CFL-leading 72 per cent of his passes for 4,639 yards and 26 touchdowns. Sunday in Montreal, it will be all about A.C.

The Cincinnati Bengals have decided to take a chance on former Kansas City Chiefs runningback Larry Johnson. The Chiefs dumped Johnson because he called the team’s beat reporters a nasty name.

Johnson is still a great back, foul mouth or not. He’ll make a good Cincinnati team even better. Nice move by Marvin Lewis.
