THE REPORTS

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

As the injuries continue to mount for the Minnesota Wild, GM Chuck Fletcher says he might be forced to make an early-season trade to bolster his roster.

Our insiders say that Fletcher has been talking to a number of his NHL colleagues, talking trade possibilities during the last couple of days. The only good news with all these injuries is that our old pal, defenseman Shane Hnidy from Neepawa, has been getting plenty of ice time.

8:15 NASCAR REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM NASCAR REPORT. Brought to you by 3M Automotive and Rondex. At 177 Isabel, Rondex is celebrating 37 years of auto body supply service.

Kevin Harvick is committed to drive for Richard Childress Racing through the remainder of this season and next, but when his contract expires at the end of 2010, he says he’s gone.

Comments made on a pre-race radio program prior to last Sunday’s race in California indicated that Harvick is ready to QUOTE: “turn the page” and begin a relationship with a new team beginning in 2011.

4:50 PM BLUE BOMBERS REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS REPORT. Brought to you by Harv-Al. Custom jerseys for your team, made right here in Winnipeg.

Comebacks are amazing. Especially when you can see them coming. Bombers coach Mike Kelly made that clear this week when he talked about his 6-8 Blue Bombers, a team that has won three straight and should make it four straight against B.C. on Sunday.

While the local media talks about this “sudden turnaround,” Kelly has always made it clear to anyone paying attention that the Bombers would be a threat before the season came to an end.

5:15 PM NFL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Football League Report. Brought to you by 3M Automotive and Rondex. At 177 Isabel, Rondex is celebrating 37 years of auto body supply service.

It’s Week 6 in the National Football League and this season that means about five potentially great football games.

If you have Sunday Ticket, lock on to Baltimore at Minnesota – there will be about 5,000 Winnipeggers in Minnie for this one – the Giants at the New Orleans Saints, Chicago at Atlanta, Arizona at Seattle and Monday night’s 5-0 Denver at 2-2 San Diego. Oh, it’s going to be a great week.

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

The Los Angeles Kings might be a one-line hockey team, but look out for that one line. The trio of Ryan Smyth, Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams had a nine-point night last Thursday and just about won Monday’s game on the road all by themselves.

The L.A. Kings are off to a great start and even with just one great line – and four solid young defencemen — the Kings are now among NHL’s royalty.

This week the NASCAR Sprint Cup boys are in Charlotte for the NASCAR Banking 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

It’s a night race, but that shouldn’t make much difference to Jimmie Johnson, the three-time defending champion and the current Sprint Cup leader. He wins at night and during the day and has won at Lowe’s five times. The big race goes Saturday at 7 on ABC.

How good were the Winnipeg Blue Bombers last week? Good enough to have two players named as CFL players of the week.

Yesterday, the CFL named Jovon Johnson the special teams player of the week for is 184 total yards in that 38-28 whipping of Hamilton while Adarius Bowman, who caught 10 passes for 213 yards and two TDs was named offensive player of the week. That’s the kind of thing that happens when a team plays well.

New York Giants QB Eli Manning says he did not aggravate his injured right heel during that 44-6 shellacking of the sad-sack Oakland Raiders on Sunday and hopes to practice every day this week.

The 5-0 Giants, will play Drew Brees and the 4-0 Saints in New Orleans this weekend in a battle of the unbeatens. It will be Manning’s first NFL game in his hometown. And along with Baltimore at Minnesota, it will be one of the best games of Week 6.

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

As TSN has asked, we should not engage in premature evaluation. But then again, have you ever seen the Toronto Maple Leafs so bad.

When Darcy Tucker comes back and cleans your clock in a 4-1 Colorado win, like he did on Tuesday night, you know you have stress. The Leafs are 0-5-1 this season. Sadly, there is no sign they will get better.

This week the NASCAR Sprint Cup boys are in Charlotte for the NASCAR Banking 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
This is a place where Sprint Cup points leader Jimmie Johnson has won five time, but not once since 2005.

With Mark Martin right on his tail lights and with both Juan Montoya and Tony Stewart sniffing at his exhaust, Johnson had better break his losing streak this week.

On Monday, Michael Bishop threw three touchdown passes as the Bombers won their third straight game, improved to 6-8 and pulled into a second-place tie with the Ticats in the Eastern Division.

The Bombers have four games remaining, three of them in Winnipeg and with a victory this week against B.C. at Canad Inns Stadium, they might just eliminate the crossover playoff format. Wonder where the “Fire Mike Kelly” folks went?

Pretty hard to find any fault with the Minnesota Vikings’ 38-10 shellacking of the St. Louis Rams other than to say, the Rams aren’t very good.

Now, having said that, the Rams still play in the National Football League and Favre beat them as a 40-year-old. Favre is now 5-0 for the first time in his career. Not bad for a guy who’s retired twice.

TUESDAY MORNING

THE DAILY SPONSORED REPORTS

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

Monday night I had a chance to watch the No. 2 pick in this spring’s NHL draft, Tampa defenseman Victor Hedman. Let me tell you, this guy is the real deal.

He’s huge at 6-foot-6, 220 pounds, and he has a very long reach. He tends to do everything right in his own end and moves the puck well. He played 25 minutes and had an assist in a 3-2 victory ver Florida and along with the likes of Marty St. Louis, Vincent Lecavalier, Alex Tanguay and Steven Stamkos, this Lightning team will definitely compete in the Eastern Division.

Jimmie Johnson’s No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet looked and WAS unbeatable on Sunday as Johnson took the Pepsi 500 at his home course, the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Cal.
Johnson now leads No. 2 Mark Martin by 12 points after the first four races of the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup. It looks like championship No. 4 is just six races away.

Wonder what all those misguided fans and the thin-skinned Winnipeg media think of Mike Kelly today? Didn’t that Bomber ream look terrific yesterday in their 38-28 road shellacking of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats? Just as we called it, by the way.

I will reiterate, Mike Kelly is the best coach the Bomber organization has seen since Mike Riley. And there IS a Grey Cup in his future.

After a tremendous Sunday for Brett Favre – and all of his teammates – for Peyton Manning, Kyle Orton, Donovan McNabb, Matt Hasselbeck and all the Cincinnati Bengals, we have to turn our attention to the Buffalo Bills. Sorry, but we must.

The Vegas odds are now 2-1 that Bills head coach Dick Jauron will be the first coach fired in the NFL this season. After the Bills lost 6-3 to Cleveland on Sunday, that’s a pretty good bet.

With three of their biggest stars in the final years of their respective contracts, the Chicago Blackhawks might be forced to make a trade to free up some salary cap space.

Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith can become restricted free agents next summer, however the Blackhawks intend to keep all three. If a deal is done, it won’t be done until next year’s draft and yes, defenseman Cam Barker from Winnipeg is the most likely player to be moved.

Good news for NASCAR fans. In the face of falling ratings for the first three Chase for the Sprint Cup events, fans and NASCAR’s TV networks have agreed that races should have cnsistent start times.

Next year’s season opener at Daytona will start at 12 Noon (its earliest start since 2003), one of 20 races to begin at that time. West Coast races will start at 2 p.m. CT, and night races at 7:30 p.m., except the 5:45 p.m. green flag for the Coca-Cola 600, which is held Memorial Day weekend. Consistency. It‘s a good start.

4:50 PM BLUE BOMBERS REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS REPORT. Brought to you by Western Paint and Wallcovering. 521 Hargrave Street and 1510 St. Mary’s Road.

This could be the weekend that sends the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on their way to a legitimate Grey Cup run. If the Bombers can go into Hamilton on Monday afternoon and knock off the Tiger Cats, Mike Kelly’s football team is suddenly back in the hunt for second in the East.

The big game starts Monday at 3:30. It’s on TSN.

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

There have been Winnipeggers who say they prefer the idea of someone buying the Atlanta Thrashers and moving that team to Winnipeg as opposed to the Phoenix Coyotes just being given to Winnipeg. Atlanta has a better team, they say.

Really? The Coyotes won their season opener 6-3 and then looked invincible beating Pittsburgh 3-0 on Wednesday night. Atlanta might have Ilya Kovalchuk, but Phoenix might have the better team.

With seven races left in the Chase, Mark Martin leads Jimmie Johnson by 18 points, Juan Montoya by 51 and Tony Stewart by 67. Johnson is the defending champ, but Matt Kenseth won here in February. This should be a great race. Sunday at 1:30 on ABC.

One gets the distinct sense that there are many in this community who don’t want the Bombers to be successful as long as Mike Kelly is head coach. It’s an odd dichotomy, but after 19 years of failure, fans are now looking for a coach they like, not a coach who can win.

By not treating the media as the gods they like to think they are, Kelly has found that he’s hated so deeply by so many fans, that even winning won’t save him from their wrath. Very odd indeed.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Tuesday night, Jonas Gustavsson, the kid known as “the Monster” made his first NHL start and played well as he kept the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 2-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators.

The so-called experts have all gone ga-ga over Gustavsson, but I’ll accept the opinion of one of Winnipeg’s best European pros, Farjestad sniper, Lee Goren. Goren called Gustavsson, his former teammate, one of the best goalies I’ve ever seen. This guy’s going to be a good one.

8:15 NASCAR REPORT

The word got out on Tuesday and now it’s another black mark on NASCAR. During last Sunday’s Price Chopper 400 at Kansas Speedway, it was reported that officials told Brad Keselowski to not race so aggressively with the Chase drivers early in the race.

NASCAR has issued plenty of “rough-driving” warnings, but to tell a top-five car not to race hard because he was surrounded by drivers in the playoffs, is an appalling turn of events. That sounds like a fix.

Yesterday on the Tom & Joe Show, Blue Bombers head coach Mike Kelly said he was proud that his quarterback, Michael Bishop, had decided to take ownership of the football team.

Bishop isn’t stupid. It was either step up or find yourself out of work. To his credit, Bishop stepped up and with a big game in Hamilton next Monday, Michael Bishop’s team is back in the playoff hunt.

What a spectacular Monday Night Football game. Especially for Brett Favre. Playing just days before his 40th birthday, Favre went 24-for-31 for 271 yards, three touchdowns and a 135.3 passer rating as he led the Minnesota Vikings o a 30-23 victory over his former team, the Green Bay Packers. Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers was 26-of-37 for 384 yards and two TDs, but two turnovers and the play of defensive end Jared Allen, who had seven tackles and 4 ½ sacks, played a huge role in the outcome. The Vikings are 4-0. If you ever wanted a great Tom and Joe World Sports Tour, that was it.

The 5-8 Winnipeg Blue Bombers, coming off Friday night’s 27-17 win over Edmonton are nw back in the playoff hunt and will get back into action a week from tonight, Thanksgiving Monday in Hamilton against the 6-7 Tiger-Cats. Game time on TSN is 3:30. Tom & Joe will have Mike Kelly right here later this morning.

There will be at least one more baseball game at the Metrodome. And that game will be played today as the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins meet up in a one-game playoff for the American League Central Division title. The winner will face the New York Yankees in the opening round of the AL playoffs. The rest of the ALDS and NLDS have been determined: In the AL, it’s Boston at the L.A. Angels and in the National League, it will be Colorado at Philadelphia and St. Louis at the Dodgers. The NL playoffs begin Wednesday. Yesterday, Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Aaron Hill was named the American League’s Comeback Player of the Year.

There were two games in the National Hockey League last night…

NY Rangers 3 New Jersey 2
Rookie Matt Gilroy’s first NHL proved to the winner. Winnipeg’s Travis Zajac scored his first goal of the year for the Devils.

Columbus 5 Vancouver 3
The Canucks fall to 0-3 this season as goalie and team captain Roberto Luongo was pulled from the game early in the second period. Rick Nash had three assists as the Blue Jackets improved to 3-0 for the first time in franchise history.

Seven games tonight. Joe and I will have our Sport Select picks coming up at 8:30.

And the Manitoba Moose play again this coming Friday and Saturday night against the Chicago Wolves: 7:30 both nights at the MTS Centre.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman won’t commit to having NHL players in the Olympics after 2010 because he doesn’t like the TV schedule, he says.

What he means is, he doesn’t want to commit NHL players to the 2014 Olympics because those Games are in Sochi, in Russia. Bettman would have no problem with Austria or Italy or Japan, but not Russia. This, above all else, is the Americanization of Canada’s national sport. Real Canadian players should just go anyway.

Here’s what never ceases to amaze me about Tony Stewart. When Stewart won last Sunday’s Chase for the Sprint Cup race at Kansas Motor Speedway he was asked what the victory meant. His response: “It means I’ll be late for a late model dirt track race I was going to run tonight in Southern Ohio.”

Oh, really? The winner of a Sprint Cup race in Kansas was going to get in his private plane and fly to a dirt track in Podunkville, Ohio, to run a late model race. Now there’s a dude who loves racing.

We found out last weekend that the Winnipeg Blue Bom,bers have a pretty good football team. Not a great one, but a good one.

In fact, everyone can stop equating it with the Reinebold years right now. The Bombers are now 5-8, they’ve won two straight, they will win again this week in Hamilton and next week at home against B.C. and they will make the playoffs. Heck, Jeff Reinebold never did win five games in a season let alone make the playoffs.

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

I have to admit, I’m a big Sidney Crosby fan. I love Jarome Iginla and Evgeni Malkin and Vinny Lecavalier. But there is no better player, anywhere than Alexander Ovechkin.

In two games this season, Ovechkin has three goals and three assists and Washington is 2-0. If he keeps this up – and there is no reason to believe he won’t – he’ll finish with 123 goals and 246 points. Wayne who?

Tony Stewart fought off Jeff Gordon to win the Price Chopper 400 at Kansas Motor Speedway yesterday, the third race in the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Nine of the Top 10 finishers were among the 12 Chasers, that’s the most ever. It was Stewart’s fourth win of the year and he’s now fourth in the Chase, 67 points behind No. 1 Mark Martin and 49 behind No. 2 Jimmie Johnson.

I see in the Free Press that there is an ongoing lament over the fact that only 22,083 went to the Stadium last week and only 21,965 went this week. Well, the Free Press and the Sun can blame themselves.

They told enough people for as long as they could that the coach was an idiot and the team was horrible and fans were wasting their money by going to the games. Well, congratulations, since you’ve become the house organ of the Blue Bombers, your readers have believed you and they’ve decided to stay home. Well done.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.

It’s football night in Winnipeg and it’s another big game for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The 4-8 Bombers meet the 6-6 Edmonton Eskimos tonight at Canad Inns Stadium. Game time is 6:30. Yesterday head coach Mike Kelly said eery game, for the rest of this season, is a playoff game. So you can check out a playoff game tonight. There are plenty of good seats available.

In the other games this week, Saskatchewan is in B.C. right after the Bombers, tonight at 9:30, Tomorrow, Montreal should eviscerate Toronto and Hamilton has to go into Calgary.

It’s Week 4 in the National Football League. The most intriguing matchups include Baltimore at New England, the unbeaten Jets at the unbeaten Saints, San Diego at Pittsburgh on Sunday night and, of course, Green Bay at Minnesota in the Monday Nighter. Joe and I will have our NFL picks coming up at 8:30.

Hockey’s back and last night there were four games on the NHL’s opening night schedule … and what a dandy in Toronto…

Montreal 4 Toronto 3 (OT)
Josh Gorges scored the OT winner for Montreal while Carey Price made 43 saves to earn the win. Matt Stajan scored twice for Toronto. Winnipeg’s Colton Orr got into it early with Georges Laraque and boy did that fight looked staged.

Calgary 5 Vancouver 3
Mikka Kiprusoff made 39 saves to lead the Flames to a home win. Winnipeg’s Nigel Dawes had an assist for Calgary while former Moose Alex Burrows and Kevin Bieksa scored for Vancouver.

Colorado 5 San Jose 2
The Avs retired Joe Sakic’s number and then went out and upset San Jose. Binscarth’s Cody McLeod had the eventual game winner.

Washington 4 Boston 1
Alexander Ovechkin had two goals and an assist.

The Manitoba Moose are all set to start the 2009-2010 season — tonight. The Moose, with Mike Keane, Marty Murray, Nolan Baumgartner and newcomer Marco Rosa begin a brand new season tonight and tomorrow night at home against Houston. 7:30 both nights at the MTS Centre.

The entire sportscast is posted at www.92citifm.ca.

In the Majors, there is only one race remaining. That’s in the American League Central. Minnesota beat Detroit 8-3 yesterday so the Tigers lead the Twins by two games with three games left to play. Yesterday, Colorado wrapped up the NL Wild Card, so in next week’s playoffs it will (probably) be Colorado at Philadelphia and St. Louis at the Dodgers.

And finally, yesterday, Winnipeg businessman David Asper was given a one-year extension in his efforts to build a new stadium for the Bombers. He also unveiled plans for The Elms, the high-end 650,000 square foot shopping and destination centre that will, theoretically, make enough money to keep the Bombers financially strong in perpetuity.

The Manitoba Maple Leafs looked pretty good on opening night. Winnipeg’s Colton Orr had a fight with George Laraque — nice and early — Ste Anne’s Garnet Exelby was solid on defence and Steinbach’s Ian White played 21 minutes.

The Leafs ended up losing 4-3 in overtime to a Montreal team that people expect to be a threat this season. After 42 years without a Cup, there might actually be hope for these Manitoba Maple Leafs

If Danica Patrick knows she’s doing after this season, she’s not saying. Patrick has refused to confirm widespread reports that she’s agreed to a three-year extension of her IndyCar contract with Andretti Green Racing.

Patrick is considered the biggest draw in the IRL, and her interest in moving to NASCAR has been speculated on numerous times in recent years. She has a close relationship with Tony Stewart , and he has said Patrick will eventually make the jump he did — from IndyCar to stock cars.

Tonight is a huge night for Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach, Mike Kelly. As long as he keeps winning, he gets a reprieve from having a wild, angry mob at his front door.

Win tonight, the Bombers are back in the hunt. Lose and at 4-9, a whole lot of people will be closer to searching for new jobs.
