Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.

A tremendous start by A.J. Burnett and a homer by Mark Teixeira halped the New York Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 at Yankee Stadium last night to even the 2009 World Series at one win apiece. Game 3 goes in Philadelphia tomorrow night. It will be Andy Pettitte for the Yankees against another lefty, Cole Hamels, for the Phillies. Game time is 6:57 on Rogers SportsNet.

There were seven games in the NHL last night… and what a battle in Edmonton on TSN…

Edmonton 6 Detroit 5 (SO)
The Oilers blew a 5-1 lead, but Patrick O’Sullivan scored the shootout winner. Former Jet Nikolai Khabibulin had to make 40 saves to save the game. Winkler’s Dustin Penner had a goal and three assists for the Oilers while Darren Helm scored his first regular-season NHL goal. He has six in the playoffs, but that was, officially, his first NHL goal.

Vancouver 2 Los Angeles 1 (SO)
Mikael Samuelsson scored Vancouver’s only goal in regulation and added the winner in the shootout.

Tampa Bay 5 Ottawa 2
Steven Stamkos had two goals and an assist to lead the Lightning.

Washington 4 Atlanta 3
Alexander Ovechkin had two goals and an assist. Alexander the Great now leads the NHL in scoring with 13 goals and nine assists.

New Jersey 2 Boston 1
Dainius Zubrus scored the winning goal with 1:26 left in regulation.

Nashville 2 Chicago 0
Pekka Rinne made only 22 saves to get the shutout. Jonathan Toews, after taking that thunderous hit from Willie Mitchell is still out of the Hawks lineup.

Phoenix 2 St. Louis 0
Ilya Bryzgalov made 32 saves for his NHL-leading third shutout of the season.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins scored just 39 seconds into overtime to beat the Manitoba Moose 1-0 at MTS Centre last night. The two teams go at it again tonight, 7:30, at the downtown rink.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers head into Montreal this Sunday for the second of their back-to-back series with the Montreal Alouettes. Special teams superstar Jovon Johnson will join Tom & Joe later this morning.

Win or lose this week, it all comes down to the Nov. 8, game at Canad Inns Stadium against Hamilton. Win that one and the Bombers will finish second in the East and play host to the Eastern semifinal on Nov. 15.

Week 18 in the CFL begins tonight with Toronto at Edmonton at 9 p.m. on TSN’s Friday Night Football.

In the NFL, it’s Week 8 and of course the big game goes Sunday afternoon at 3 at Lambeau Field as the 4-2 Green Bay Packers play host to Brett Favre and the 6-1 Minnesota Vikings. There is also Denver at Buffalo, the Giants at Philly and Miami at the Jets.

And finally, the 2010 Winnipeg Goldeyes schedule has been released. Next season there are eight teams in the Northern League and a 100-game schedule. The season opens May 20 in Winnipeg as the Goldeyes play Kevin Costner’s Lake County Fielders.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

Dominik Hasek has told a Czech newspaper that he has all but ruled himself out of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, according to reports.

Hasek, who is now 44, suffered a thigh injury during a game last weekend in the Czech Elite league and will be out for at least the next three weeks. In a worst-case scenario, Hasek could miss six weeks. If he’s gone that long, he said he won’t be ready for the Vancouver Games.

8:15 NASCAR REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM NASCAR REPORT. Brought to you by 3M Automotive and Rondex. At 177 Isabel, Rondex is celebrating 37 years of auto body supply service.

This past weekend at Talladega, you might have noticed something significantly different about Elliot Sadler.

Yeah, that’s right, he’s no longer driving a Toyota. This week, Sadler debuted a Ford for Richard Petty Motorsports. It could be first step toward Petty dropping Toyota altogether.

5:15 PM NFL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Football League Report. Brought to you by 3M Automotive and Rondex. At 177 Isabel, Rondex is celebrating 37 years of auto body supply service.

We talked yesterday about that huge game in Green Bay on Sunday with the Minnesota Vikings heading to Lambeau. It’s huge, but there is one other very intriguing game this week.

The unbeaten 6-0 Denver Broncos head to Baltimore to face a very good, but unrewarded 3-3 Ravens team. This is jut a guess, but I figure the Broncos finally fall to 6-1 this week. The Ravens are much better at home than 3-3 would indicate.

4:50 PM BLUE BOMBERS REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS REPORT. Brought to you by Harv-Al. Custom jerseys for your team, made right here in Winnipeg.

Don’t forget, what happens this weekend in the CFL doesn’t really matter to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Regardless of the outcome of this weekend’s games, it all comes down to the Nov. 8, game at Canad Inns Stadium against Hamilton. Win that one and the Bombers will finish second in the East and play host to the Eastern semifinal on Nov. 15. Pretty simple stuff.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.

A brilliant start by lefty Cliff Lee and a pair of solo homers by Chase Utley were the difference as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Yankees 6-1 in the opening game of the 2009 World Series. Game 2 goes tonight at Yankee Stadium. It’s Pedro Martinez for the Phils against A.J. Burnett for the Yanks. Game time is 6:57 on Rogers SportsNet.

There were 10 games in the NHL last night…

Pittsburgh 6 Montreal 1
Sidney Crosby with his third career hat-trick. Chris Kunitz had a goal and three assists.

Ottawa 4 Florida 3
Daniel Alfredsson led the way with a goal and an assist.

Dallas 4 Toronto 3 (OT)
Brad Richards led the Stars with two goals. James Neal scored the winner with 2:03 left in overtime.

Colorado 3 Calgary 2
The Avs just won two in a row in Alberta and are now 10-1-2 this season.

San Jose 2 Los Angeles 1 (SO)
The shootout went six rounds as Ryan Clowe finally got the winner.

Buffalo 4 New Jersey 1
Ryan Miller made 31 saves to get the win. Miller is 7-0-1 this season and Buffalo is unbeaten on the road this season.

Phoenix 4 Columbus 1
We’re laughing at Phoenix but the announced crowd in Columbus last night was 13,184 and there were probably more like 8,000 in the building.

Nashville 4 Minnesota 3
Jerrad Smithson’s shorthanded goal in the third was the difference. Our pal Shane Hnidy was a plus-one for Minnesota.

St. Louis 5 Carolina 2
David Perron led the Blues with two goals and an assist.

NY Islanders 3 NY Rangers 1
John Tavares scored for the Islanders while Dwayne Roloson made 33 saves to tet the win.

The Manitoba Moose play again tonight and tomorrow night against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 7:30 both nights at MTS Centre.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers head into Montreal this Sunday for the second of their back-to-back series with the Montreal Alouettes.

Win or lose this week, it all comes down to the Nov. 8, game at Canad Inns Stadium against Hamilton. Win that one and the Bombers will finish second in the East and play host to the Eastern semifinal on Nov. 15.

Week 18 in the CFL begins tomorrow night with Toronto at Edmonton at 9 p.m. on TSN’s Friday Night Football.

And in the NBA, the Toronto Raptors opened the 2009-1010 season at Air Canada Centre last night with a 101-91 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Abdrea Bargnani had 28 points for Toronto while Chris Bosh had 21 points and 16 rebounds. LeBron had the 25th triple-double of his career with 23 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

Have you noticed that in the last two years, NHL teams are not backing away from having 18-year-old first-round draft picks in their lineups.

In 2008, eight first-round selections — Steven Stamkos (first overall), Drew Doughty (second), Zach Bogosian (third), Luke Schenn (fifth), Mikkel Boedker (eighth), Josh Bailey (ninth), Luca Sbisa (19th) and Viktor Tikhonov (20th) — played 39 or more games in the NHL. This year, the top-4 picks — John Tavares, Viktor Hedman, Matt Duchene, Evander Kane — and two others (Dmitiry Kulikov, 14th, and Ryan O’Reilly, 33rd) are likely to stay for the remainder of the season. When you run out of cap room, a rookie is not a bad thing at all.

This week the Sprint Cup chasers are in Talladega, Alabama, for the Amp Energy 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.

Talladega is a big, fast track. A 2.66 mile tri-oval that produces some of the best racing on the NASCAR circuit. This week’s race will be wide open and very, very fast. The Amp Energy 500 goes Sunday at noon on ABC. And TSN 2

There is absolutely no question where the big game is in Week 8 of the NFL schedule. This Sunday at 3 p.m. live from Lambeau Field in Green Bay, it’s the Green Bay Packers playing host to the Minnesota Vikings.

The Vikings are 6-1, the Packers are 4-2 and the anti-Favre forces will be out in full force. We’ll see how resilient ol’ Brett is this week when he plays in front of what will likely be the most hostile crowd he’s seen in his career.

You can bet the Winnipeg Blue Bombers aren’t saying a single word that might upset the Montreal Alouettes. There will be no bulletin board fodder this week for an Als team that is already angry at last Saturday’s 41-24 loss in Winnipeg.

However, it would also be fair to say the Bombers are quietly optimistic about Sunday’s foray into Montreal. The Bombers truly believe they match up better against Montreal than any other team in the CFL.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.

The 2009 World Series starts tonight. The New York Yankees will meet the defending World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies in the Fall Classic. Game 1 goes tonight at New York’s Yankee Stadium. It will be ALCS MVP C.C. Sabathia for the Yanks taking the mound against Philadelphia lefty Cliff Lee, two former Cy Young Award winners with the Cleveland Indians. The Fall Classic starts tonight at 7 p.m. on Rogers SportsNet.

There were three games in the NHL last night…

Detroit 5 Vancouver 4
The Wings came back from a 2-0 deficit as Pavel Datsyuk had two goals and an assist.

Colorado 3 Edmonton 0
Craig Anderson stopped 25 shots to earn his second shutout of the season.

Washington 4 Philadelphia 2
Alexander Ovechkin had two goals and was a plus-three.

The Manitoba Moose play again tomorrow night and Friday night against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 7:30 both nights at MTS Centre. Tomorrow night, the Moose will play without defenseman Nathan McIver who was suspended for a hit from behind against Chicago on Saturday night.

15. Yesterday, the CFL announced that Jovon Johnson had been named special teams player of the week – that’s the third time in four weeks for Johnson.

Week 18 in the CFL begins Friday night with Toronto at Edmonton at 9 p.m. on TSN’s Friday Night Football.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

We’re a dozen games into the season and does it surprise anyone that of the six divisions in the NHL, three of the leaders are Buffalo, Colorado and Los Angeles.

I’m not sure Buffalo and Colorado will still be on top in a week, but I’m not sure that Los Angeles doesn’t have the best team in the Pacific. Frankly, there is no better line right now than the Kings’ Kopitar, Smyth and Williams.

This week the Sprint Cup chasers are in Talladega, Alabama, for the Amp Energy 500 at Talladega Superspeedway and its the last legitimate chance for 11 other drivers to stop Jimmie Johnson.

If Johnson gains more points here at Talladega, his road to a fourth consecutive Sprint Cup title will be in cruise control. This is a big track with big wrecks. And a wreck is the only way to stop the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet.

It was getting crazy around the NFL yesterday. In Nashville, Tennesee Titans owner Bud Adams told head coach Jeff Fisher to start Vince Young at quarterback, or else. In Kansas City, the Chiefs told RB Larry Johnson to stay away from the team until they finish an investigation on remarks he allegedly made against reporters.

And in Tampa, the sad-sack Bucs released OL Marcus Johnson following his arrest on DUI charges. Goodness, the Bucs would be a better team if everyone was drunk.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers cornerback Jovon Johnson has been named Special Teams Player of the Week for his remarkable performance against Montreal last week.

Johnson racked up 254 total return yards in Winnipeg’s 41-24 shellacking of the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday, including a highlight-reel 79-yard punt return for a touchdown.

Johnson has been named the Gibson’s Finest CFL Special Teams Player of the Week three of the past four weeks.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.

There were four games in the NHL last night… and how ‘bout them Leafs?

Toronto 6 Anaheim 3
The Leafs finally get a win this season as Nicklas Hagman fired a hat-trick and Tomas Kaberle had a goal and four assists to lead Toronto, on the road, in Anaheim no less. That big win ended an 0-7-1 slide to start the season.

Montreal 3 NY Islanders 2 (OT)
Roman Hamrlik scored the overtime winner for Montreal.

NY Rangers 5 Phoenix 2
Jerry Moyes has agreed to sell the Coyotes back to the NHL. I guess, that was the good news for Phoenix. Marian Gaborik had two goals and an assist to lead the Rangers and now leads the league with 10 goals this season.

Chicago 3 Minnesota 1
Jonathan Toews skated in the warm-up but didn’t suit up for the game.

The Manitoba Moose play again Thursday and Friday night against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 7:30 both nights at MTS Centre.

Last night on the NFL’s Monday Nighter:

Philadelphia 27 Washington 17
Poor old Washington gave up four turnovers including a pick for six while Philly did not give up the football.

Week 18 in the CFL begins Friday night with Toronto at Edmonton at 9 p.m. on TSN’s Friday Night Football.

And in baseball, the New York Yankees will play the defending World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies in the 2009 World Series. It will be ALCS MVP C.C. Sabathia for the Yanks taking the mound against Philadelphia lefty Cliff Lee, two former Cy Young Award winners with the Cleveland Indians. The Fall Classic starts tomorrow at 7 p.m. on Rogers SportsNet.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

The Ottawa Sun is at it again. The newspaper that creates more trade rumours than a handful of drunks at a sports bar now has the following on its plate: Brian Burke is actively pursuing a goaltender (wjo knew?), the Florida Panthers are trying to trade Nathan Horton (the GM has denied it), the Philadelphia Flyers are interested in signing Brendan Shanahan (should be easy, he’s an unemployed free agent) and the Carolina Hurricanes are ready to trade anyone and everyone (really?).

As I’ve always said, “If it’s in a newspaper, believe whatever it is you want to believe.”

Jimmie Johnson didn’t win Sunday’s race at Martinsville Speedway. He finished second to race winner Denny Hamlin.
But consider this: Even though that’s the lowest Johnson has finished in the past three races, he’s still better than everybody else.

In fact, Hamlin was the only Chase competitor to gain points on the three-time defending champion. And Hamlin only gained 20 and is still more than 300 points behind. Everyone else fell farther behind Johnson in the standings. This Chase is just about over.

Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson used a gay slur for the second time in as many days on Monday, according to the Kansas City Star.

Johnson refused to speak with reporters yesterday, a day after the Chiefs’ 37-7 evisceration by the Chargers. Sitting in front of his locker, he turned away and muttered the slur while telling reporters to get “out of here.” The Star recorded the comment. It’s sad. By acting like an idiot, Larry Johnson’s otherwise solid NFL career is just about over.

If you have a ticket, tonight’s a huge night in Winnipeg. There will be more than 20 past and present Blue Bomnbers live at Earl’s Restaurant on Main Street for the second Hearts of Blue & Gold Dinner for Variety this season.

The evening starts at six and will feature a silent auction, a live auction, cocktails and interviews with the players. There will be plenty of autograph opportunities and there is still some space in the lounge. This, my friends, is the party of the year.

Win or lose this week, it all comes down to the Nov. 8, game at Canad Inns Stadium against Hamilton. Week 18 in the CFL begins Friday night with Toronto at Edmonton at 9 p.m. on TSN’s Friday Night Football.

There were three games in the NHL last night…

The Manitoba Moose play again Thursday and Friday night against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 7:30 both nights at MTS Centre.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

What a huge night on Saturday night for Winnipeg’s Nigel Dawes. The little rightwinger scored two goals as he led the Calgary Flames to a 5-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers.

Dawes, playing on a line with Rene Bourque and Daymond Langkow has found new life. Those days in New York and Phoenix, where coaches and managers didn’t believe in him, are over. Nigel Dawes has found a home in Calgary.

Virginia’s own Denny Hamlin won yesterday’s Tums Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville, Virginia, but the real news was that Cup Series leader Jimmie Johnson finished second.

Johnson extended his lead in the Cup standings from 90 to 118 points over No. 2 Mark Martin. With only four races left, Johnson just about has the Sprint Cup in the bag.

The officiating in yesterday’s Minnesota-Pittsburgh game was a complete embarrassment to the NFL. So embarrassing in fact, that it looked like a fix. I wonder which NFL officials had money on that game.

All officiating everywhere at every level is awful. We’ve watched the horrible baseball umpiring this fall and we’ve watched CFL, NFL and NHL officials look either lost or phony. The biggest problem with sport these days isn’t steroids, it’s lousy officiating.

I love how even some Bomber players are sheepish about Saturday afternoon’s 41-24 win over the Montreal Alouettes. Anthony Calvillo didn’t play and therefore, it wasn’t really a big win.

Baloney. If Calvillo had played on Saturday, the Bombers would have won by 30, not 17. Calvillo can’t run out of trouble like Adrian McPherson did. Calvillo would have been killed on Saturday. I think the Bombers are hoping Calvillo plays this Sunday. I’m sure Phillip Hunt and Odell Willis are salivating at the thought of taking that rush to Montreal’s old man.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.

The defending World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies will have to wait to until the weekend to find out who they’ll face in the World Series. Last night in Anaheim, the Los Angeles Angels built a 4-0 lead, blew it and trailed 6-4 and then came back with three runs in the seventh to beat the New York Yankees 7-6 to extend the American League Championship Series to a Game 6 in New York. The Yanks still lead the series 3-2. Game 6 goes tomorrow night at Yankee Stadium 6:37 on Fox.

In other baseball news, the Winnipeg Goldeyes lost two players to the Northern League’s expansion draft yesterday – pitcher Chris Homer and first baseman Cody Ehlers were selected by Kevin Costner’s brand new Lake County Fielders. It was also announced that the new eight-team Northern League will play a 100-game schedule next season.

There were nine games in the NHL last night… and what a night for Winkler’s Dustin Penner…

Edmonton 6 Columbus 4
Penner had two goals and three assists and is now third in the NHL in scoring with 14 points.

Montreal 5 NY Islanders 1
So much for the alleged concussion – Marc-Andre Bergeron led the Habs with a goal and an assist.

Nashville 6 Ottawa 5 (OT)
Preds defencemen Ryan Suter and Shea Weber each had two goals and an assist. Colin Wilson scored his first NHL point for Nashville, an assist on the first goal of the game.

Philadelphia 4 Boston 3 (SO)
Portage’s Arron Asham scored Philly’s third goal in regulation, his second of the year. Claude Giroux scored the only goal in the shootout.

Phoenix 3 Detroit 2 (OT)
Adfrian Aucoin scored the winner in front of an announced crowd of 11,000 in Phoenix.

New Jersey 4 NY Rangers 2
Zach Parise led the Devils with two goals and an assist while Winnipeg’s Travis Zajac, who is now tied with Sidney Crosby in the points race, had an assist.

Washington 5 Atlanta 4
Winkler’s Eric Fehr scored his first of the year for Washington. Ilya Kovalchuk scored twice for Atlanta.

Los Angeles 5 Dallas 4 (OT)
Michael Handzus scored the overtime winner. Anze Kopitar had the hat-trick for L.A.

Tampa Bay 5 San Jose 2
Lightning goalie Mike Smith won his first game in nine months. Steven Stamkos scored twice for Tampa

The 6-4 first-place Manitoba Moose continue their six-game road trip tonight in Chicago against Chris Chelios and the Wolves.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have a huge football game tomorrow as the Bombers face the 13-2 Montreal Alouettes in a must-win game at Canad Inns Stadium. The 6-9 Bombers probably have to win two of their last three games if they intend to make the playoffs. Game time Saturday is 1:30. Joe has plenty of tickets to give away and don’t forget, Mike Kelly will be Tom & Joe’s guest right here later this morning.

Week 17 in the CFL begins tonight with a doubleheader on TSN – Hamilton at Toronto at 6 and Edmonton at Calgary at 9.

And it’s Week 7 in the National Football League and there is very little doubt that the biggest game of the week goes at noon on Sunday as the 6-0 Minnesota Vikings visit the defending Super Bowl champion Steelers in Pittsburgh. As well, San Francisco is at Houston, Atlanta is at Dallas, New Orleans is at Miami and on Sunday night, Arizona plays at the New York Giants. Joe and I will have our picks coming up at 8:30.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

The talented Alexander Frolov probably doesn’t have much of a future with the Los Angeles Kings. After all, he just doesn’t see eye-to-eye with head coach Terry Murray.

If Brian Burke and the Toronto Maple Leafs really cared about winning – and if nothing else, just scoring some goals – they’d call L.A. GM Dean Lombardi and make an offer.

Heading into the weekend’s race at Martinsville, 50-year-old Mark Martin, who actually retired two years ago, was in second place in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

So Denny Hamlin was asked what he was doing in 1981 when Mark Martin made his first Cup Series start. QUOTE: “I was getting milk out of a bottle,” Hamlin was born on Nov. 11, 1980.

There is very little doubt that the biggest game this week will take place in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Sunday afternoon.

It’s the Vikings and the Steelers and this game would appear to be a much bigger game for the Steelers. The Vikings are well ahead of everyone in the NFC North, so a non-conference tilt means a lot less to them. Plus, they go to Lambeau next week. The Steelers, meanwhile, are tied for first in the division and are going into their bye week. Oh yeah, and there’s this little fact; including the postseason, the Steelers have won nine straight at home.

Here’s the way things line up with three weeks left in the 2009 CFL season: Montreal is in the playoffs, Saskatchewan, Calgary and B.C. probably have enough wins to get there.

If Edmonton can upset Calgary tonight they’ll be in the driver’s seat and that means Winnipeg MUST win against Montreal tomorrow. ‘Cause we can pretty much guarantee that Hamilton is going to beat Toronto tonight

The defending World Series champion Philadelphia Phillies got a pair of homeruns from Jayson Werth last night as they walloped the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-4 at Citizens Bank Park in Philly to win the National League Championship Series. The Phillies will play either the New York Yankees or Los Angeles Angels in the World Series and the Phils can become the first team to win back-to-back World Series since the 1998-2000 Yankees and the first National League team to do it since the 1975-76 Reds. The Yanks and Angels play Game 5 of the ALCS tonight at 6:57 on Fox. The Yanks lead the series three games to one.

There were six games in the NHL last night…

Vancouver 3 Chicago 2
Hawks captain Jonathan Toews was injured after taking a clean, solid hit from Willie Mitchell near centre ice. He left the game lidway through the third and will be re-evaluated today.Vancouver scored two unanswered in the third to come back and win. Michael Grabner scored the tying goal. Winnipeg-born Duncan keith had a goal and an assist for Chicago.

Minnesota 3 Colorado 2 (SO)
Mikko Koivu tied the game late in the third and then won it in the shootout.

Boston 3 Nashville 2
Steve Begin’s first goal as a Bruin turned out to be the winner.

NY Islanders 4 Carolina 3 (OT)
It had been 10 games and more than six months since the Islanders last picked up two points in the same night.

Dallas 4 Anaheim 2
The Stars won despite playing without the injured Brad Richards, Jere Lehtinen and Mike Modano.

Buffalo 5 Florida 2
Five different Sabres scored and 14 different Sabres recorded points.

The 6-4 first-place Manitoba Moose continue their six-game road trip tomorrow night in Chicago against Chris Chelios and the Wolves.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have a huge game on Saturday as the Bombers face the 13-2 Montreal Alouettes in a must-win game at Canad Inns Stadium. The 6-9 Bombers probably have to win two of their last three games if they intend to make the playoffs. Game time Saturday is 1:30. Joe has plenty of tickets to give away.

In other CFL news, Casey Printers will start at quarterback for the B.C. Lions when they face the Saskatchewan Roughriders at 4:30 on Saturday. Week 17 in the CFL begins tomorrow night with a doubleheader on TSN – Hamilton at Toronto at 6 and Edmonton at Calgary at 9.

It’s Week 7 in the National Football League and there is very little doubt that the biggest game of the week goes at noon on Sunday as the 6-0 Minnesota Vikings visit the defending Super Bowl champion Steelers in Pittsburgh. As well, San Francisco is at Houston, Atlanta is at Dallas, New Orleans is at Miami and on Sunday night, Arizona plays at the New York Giants.

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are not only winless this season, they have allowed 18 more goals than they’ve scored. However, to be fair, they do have one exceptional player who is a plus-three. That’s right, plus-three on a minus-18 team.

He’s also the smallest guy on the team – Steinbach’s Ian White. He has four goals and he hasn’t missed a game. He’s a Top 4 defenceman and if the Leafs are going to get out of this funk, it will be little Ian White who leads the way.

This week, the NASCAR Sprint Cup boys meet up at Martinsville Speedway for the ??? 500 as Jimmie Johnson, leading the Sprint Cup standings by 90 points, tries to put a lock on his fourth consecutive Sprint Cup championship.

There are only five races left in this year’s Chase and if Johnson wins in Martinsville, it will be his fourth win the past five events and will all but guarantee him very rare dynasty status in stock car racing.

This Sunday afternoon in Pittsburgh, one of the biggest games of the 2009 NFL season will take place as Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings meet up with Ben Roethlisberger the defending Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Vikings are 6-0 while Pittsburgh is 4-2, but Steelers coach Mike Tomlin has righted the Steelers ship and they’ll be loaded for bear coming off a decisive win over the Browns. This will be Minnesota’s toughest test of the season. We like Pittsburgh to cover the 2 ½-point sread.

It’s very likely that the entire 2009 season hinges on a huge upset win by the Bombers this weekend. The Montreal Alouettes come to town on Saturday afternoon and a Bombers win will mean that Winnipeg probably only has to win one more game to make the playoffs this season.

A loss, however, and the Bombers will have to win in Montreal and then beat Hamilton back here on Nov. 8 if they hope to have a shot at the post-season.

Sure was great to watch Nikolai Khabibulin stand tall in the Edmonton net, looking like the guy who played so brilliantly for the Winnipeg Jets way back in 1996.

Khabibulin made 39 saves as the Oilers beat Vancouver 2-1. If he keeps this up, the 36-year-old Khabibulin just might be the guy who coaxes the Oilers into the playoffs.

This Sunday, the NASCAR Sprint Cup boys meet up at Martinsville Speedway for the Tums Fast Relief 500, the sixth race in the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Three-time defending champion Jimmie Johnson leads the Sprint Cup standings by 90 points over Mark Martin with five races left. Back in March, Johnson won the race right here at Martinsville.

I just love how the local mainstream media has now decided that Mike Kelly has had nothing to do with the resurgence of the suddenly 6-9 Winnipeg Blue Bombers and it’s now all Manny Matsakis.

Kelly has re-built the Blue Bombers and the fact the he hired Matsakis to work with Michael Bishop and make Bishop better, is just another example of Kelly’s coaching prowess. The Bombers lost a heartbreaker on Sunday, but Kelly is still proving just how great a coach he is.

I was at the Carolina-Tampa game on Sunday, two lousy teams playing in front of 25,000 empty seats at Raymond James Stadium.

However, to be fair, Carolina’s DeAngelo Williams rushed for 152 yards and scored two touchdowns on 30 carries. Williams is a horse and no matter how bad the 2-3 Panthers might be, DeAngelo Williams is still a big-time running back.

We’ve talked about this about 100 times since last year’s playoffs, but it’s becoming more apparent that the Montreal Canadiens do have a goaltending problem.

Despite a terrific opening night, Carey Price is at best inconsistent and Saturday night against Ottawa he allowed three goals on only 21 shots. That’s not good enough. Perhaps, Montreal needs to look around for a Price replacement.

After winning at Lowe’s Motor Speedway on Saturday night, Jimmie Johnson now has a 90-point lead in the Chase for the Sprint Cup standings.

It doesn’t sound like all that much, but it is the largest lead any competitor has ever had at the halfway point of the Chase for the Sprint Cup. In fact, most experts agree, if Johnson does well at treacherous Talladega, he should have enough points to carry the Lowe’s 48 Chevy to a fourth straight Cup win.

So how great was Drew Brees on Sunday afternoon? Not even the numbers do the quarterback of the undefeated New Orleans Saints enough justice.

Brees was 23-for-30 for 369 yards and four touchdowns as the Saints blasted the previously undefeated New York Giants 48-27. Brees now has 14 touchdown passes. There’s your mid-season player of the year.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers took a bold step into the past on Monday, by calling Troy Westwood and asking the club’s record-setting former kicker and punter to return to the fold.

It was a terrific decision by head coach Mike Kelly. It allows Alexis Serna to concentrate on kicking and leaves Westwood, one of the best punters into the wind, to handle the important punting duties. It also shows that the Doug Berry Era is long gone and the Bombers are looking to rebuild their future by embracing their past.

THE REPORTS

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

We reported on it last week and on Sunday it happened. The Minnesota Wild made an early-season trade.

The low-scoring Wild acquired winger Chuck Kobasew from the Boston Bruins in exchange for winger Craig Walter, a draft pick and the rights to a Swedish prospect Alexander Fallstrom. It’s not an earth-shattering move, but at least it gives the Wild a little more punch up front.

Jimmie Johnson’s No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet looked and WAS unbeatable on Saturday night as Johnson took the NASCAR Banking 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C.

Johnson, the three-time defending champion, now leads No. 2 Mark Martin by 90 points after the first five races of the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup. He’s won the last two races and three of the last four. Championship No. 4 is almost in the bag.

The Blue Bombers lost a 24-21 heartbreaker to the B.C. Lions yesterday, but it was a heartbreaker of the Bombers own making. Once again, turnovers killed Winnipeg.

Michael Bishop went 13 for 32, just awful, with one touchdown and three interceptions. He also lost a fumble. Four turnovers means one big loss. Bishop must learn to protect the football.

There are some football games you watch and you just sit there and shake your head in wonder. Yesterday afternoon here in Tampa, as a number of locals watched Carolina beat Tampa Bay 28-21 down on the field at Raymond James Stadium, a handful of us couldn’t pull ourselves away from the press box TV where the Minnesota Vikings held on to beat the Baltimore Ravens 33-31.

There have been some great performances this year – and we’ll get to the Saints and Pats later this week – but undefeated Minnesota’s win over Baltimore was so spectacular it transcended words. It was just one of those games you have to sit back and enjoy.
