Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.

There were four games on the NHL’s pre-season schedule last night… two were in Europe… and it was a big night for the local guys.

New Jersey 4 NY Islanders 2
Winnipeg’s Travis Zajac had a goal and an assist to lead the Devils.

Minnesota 5 Philadelphia 4 (SO)
Kenora’s Mike Richards scored one of Philly’s goals.

St. Louis 6 Linkoping, Sweden 0
Winnipeg’s Alex Steen led the way with a goal and an assist.

Zurich 2 Chicago 1
Winnipeg’s Cam Barker scored Chicago’s only goal.

The 2009-10 regular season starts tomorrow night with four games including Montreal at Toronto and Vancouver at Calgary.

The Moose are all set to start the 2009-2010 season. The new season begins Friday and Saturday night at home against Houston. 7:30 both nights at the MTS Centre.

Another big game for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers this week. The Bombers meet Edmonton Friday night at Canad Inns Stadium. Game time is 6:30. Yesterday, Bombers kicker Alexis Serna was named the CFL’s special teams player of the week.

In the Majors, there are only two races left — the American League’s Central Division and the National League Wild Card. Last night, Detroit beat Minnesota 6-5 to split a day-night doubleheader. And remain two games up on the Twins in the AL Central with five games to play. Colorado took a three-game lead in the NL Wild Card race. Colorado beat Milwaukee 7-5 in 11 while Atlanta lost 5-4 at home to Florida. And the Boston Red Sox are officially back in the playoffs. The Red Sox lost 8-7 to the Toronto Blue Jays as the Jays hit six homers – Adam Lind had three of them — but the Angels beat Texas 5-2 so the Red Sox are the AL Wild Card winners.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

It all starts tonight. The 2009-2010 National Hockey League season begins on four fronts: Washington is at Boston, San Jose is at Colorado, Vancouver is at Calgary and the Montreal Canadiens play in Toronto.

Here’s what to expect this year: Toronto will be better, Calgary will be outstanding, the Penguins and Red Wings are still solid and if there is a dark-horse, it’s the Columbus Blue Jackets, simply because they have a great goaltender. In fact, here’s what I know for sure: the team with the best goalie, will win the Stanley Cup.

8:15 NASCAR REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM NASCAR REPORT. Brought to you by 3M Automotive and Rondex. At 177 Isabel, Rondex is celebrating 37 years of auto body supply service.

It’s the third race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup this week as the NASCAR Sprint Cup boys meet up at Kansas Speedway for the Price Chopper 400 presented by Kraft Foods.

Jimmie Johnson won this race last year en route to his third straight Sprint Cup championship. A win this week and with only seven races left in the Chase, Johnson might be headed to his fourth straight title.

4:50 PM BLUE BOMBERS REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS REPORT. Brought to you by Harv-Al. Custom jerseys for your team, made right here in Winnipeg.

Kicker Alexis Serna has perhaps been the most improved player in the CFL this year and yesterday he was rewarded for his hard off-season work. Serna was named the Gibson’s Finest special teams player of the week for Week 13.

Serna accounted for nearly half of the Bombers’ scoring in their victory over the Argos on Saturday night. Serna hit 4 of 5 field goals and was good on both his extra point attempts for the game. Serna has hit 24 of 28 attempts this season (85.7%). Only the Argos’ Justin Medlock has been more accurate kicking field goals this season.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

92 CITI FM IS AN OFFICIAL STATION OF THE VANCOUVER 2010 OLYMPIC RADIO NETWORK.

Another veteran has been sent packing by the Toronto Argonauts. Yesterday the Argos traded cornerback Byron Parker, who has more interceptions for touchdowns in his CFL career than the entire Argos defensive backfield has interceptions, to the Edmonton Eskimos for a fourth-round pick in next year’s Canadian draft. There is a chance Parker, who was cut by the Philadelphia Eagles to make room for Michael Vick, could suit up for the Eskimos when they play 4-8 Winnipeg at Canad Inns Stadium on Friday night
In the Monday Nighter, Terrence Newman returned a Jake Delhomme interception 27 yards for a late touchdown as Dallas beat Carolina 21-7 at Jerry Jones’s Palace in Dallas. The Cownoys are 2-1 while Carolina falls to 0-3. And Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington has a dislocated shoulder. He’s out for the season. Chad Henne will start at QB for Miami this week.

In hockey, the Moose are just about finished with their preparations. The new season begins Friday and Saturday night at home against Houston. 7:30 both nights at the MTS Centre.

There were two games on the NHL’s pre-season schedule last night… both were in Europe.

Tampere Finland 3 Florida 2 (SO)
How good was Tampere? Panthers goalie Scott Clemmensen made 43 saves.

Chicago 9 Davos Switzerland 2
Patrick Kane had two goals and an assist while Jonathan Toews had a pair of assists.

Meanwhile, Theoren Fleury, released by the Calgary Flames on Friday, officially announced his retirement from the NHL yesterday and the 2009-10 regular season starts Thursday night with four games including Montreal at Toronto and Vancouver at Calgary.

In the Majors, the Los Angeles Angels clinched the American League West Division title and now there are only two races left — the American League’s Central Division and the National League Wild Card. Last night, the first game of the Minnesota Twins-Detroit Tigers four-game series was postponed due to rain. It will be made up in a day-night doubleheader today. Detroit leads the Twins by two games in the AL Central. And Atlanta beat Florida 4-0 to pull within two games of Colorado in the NL Wild Card hunt.

7:15 CFL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

Despite his win on Saturday night, Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Mike Kelly is still despised by plenty of Bomber fans. I know, I get the e-mails.

However, to be fair, Kelly could be Bart Andrus, a guy who has lost the Toronto Argonauts locker room and who has turned the Argos into a 3-9 last-place team. No matter how bad you might think it is – and I’m not so sure it is – it could always be worse.

Many NASCAR insiders thought Danica Patrick might give up Indy Car racing for the big American stock circuit, but it’s not going to happen. At least, not for awhile.

Patrick signed a three-year contract to remain with Andretti Green Racing during last weekend’s event at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit in Japan. She will continue to drive the No. 7 car with a Motorola-based sponsorship and not give NASCAR a shot until at least 2013.

4:50 PM BLUE BOMBERS REPORT

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers, 29-24 winners over Toronto on Saturday night, will play host to the Edmonton Eskimos in the first game of Week 14. Friday night at 6:30 at Canad Inns Stadium. Mike Kelly will be Tom & Joe’s guest coming up at about 8:40.

In hockey, the Moose are just about finished with their preparations. The new season begins Friday and Saturday night at home against Houston. 7:30 both nights at the MTS Centre.

What a spectacular Sunday in the NFL: the Detroit Lions finally won after 19 straight losses, Michael Vick made his return to the game with the Philadelphia Eagles and Brett Favre did what Brett Favre does best.

Let’s start with Favre, who hit Greg Lewis on a 32-yard touchdown pass with two seconds remaining to give the Minnesota Vikings a 27-24 come-from-behind win over the San Francisco 49ers. The Vikings improved to 3-0 as Favre completed 24-for-46 for 301 yards and two touchdowns.

Detroit 19 Washington 14
The last time the Lions won a football game was in December of 2007.

Philadelphia 34 Kansas City 14

New England 26 Atlanta 10

Green Bay 36 St. Louis 17

New York Giants 24 Tampa Bay 0

Jacksonville 31 Houston 24

Baltimore 34 Cleveland 3
Baltimore is now 3-0 while Cleveland drops to 0-3 and is starting to look like the new Detroit.

New York Jets 24 Tennessee 17
The Jets’ Mark Sanchez became the first rookie QB in NFL history to win his first three games.

Chicago 25 Seattle 19

New Orleans 27 Buffalo 7

Cincinnati 23 Pittsburgh 20
The defending Super Bowl champion Steelers are now 1-2 to start the season.

Denver 23 Oakland 3

San Diego 23 Miami 13

Last night, Indianapolis clobbered Arizona 31-10 in Glendale. Tonight Dallas plays host to Carolina on the Monday Nighter.

There were seven games on the NHL’s pre-season schedule last night… here are some highlights…

Edmonton 5 Vancouver 4 (OT)
Tom Gilbert scored the overtime winner.

Buffalo 7 Toronto 6
Tomas Vanek scored twice for Buffalo

Detroit 4 Pittsburgh 1
Pave Datsyuk and Jason Williams each had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings.

Washington 4 NY Rangers 3
Washington finished the pre-season 4-2-0

Nashville 4 Columbus 2

Anaheim Los Angeles

Tampa 5 Atlanta 1
Steven Stamkos scored twice for the Lightning.

The 2009-10 regular season starts Thursday with four games including Montreal at Toronto and Vancouver at Calgary.

In the Majors, there are two races left — the American League’s Central Division and the National League Wild Card. Yesterday, the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 8-4 while the Kansas City Royals beat the Minnesota Twins 4-1 so the Tigers remain two games ahead of Minnesota in the AL Central. The Twins open a four-game series in Detroit tonight. And in the NL Wild Card, Atlanta beat Washington 6-3 while Colorado beat St. Louis ?-? so the Rockies remain 2 ½ games up on the Braves.

In auto racing, Jimmie Johnson won the Triple A 400 at the Monster Mile at Dover yesterday, his fourth win at Dover, but Mark Martin was second and he remains 10 points ahead of Johnson in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Finally, in golf, Phil Mickelson shot a final round 65 to finish at minus-9 to win the Tour Championship yesterday at East Lake in Atlanta, but Tiger Woods won the FedEx Cup and the $10 million that goes with it. He probably sewed up Player of the Year, as well.

7:15 CFL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

After beating Toronto 29-24 on Saturday night, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are suddenly back in the playoff hunt.

Winnipeg now plays host to an inconsistent Edmonton team this coming Friday night, goes to Hamilton on Oct. 12, plays host to B.C. on Oct. 18, plays host to Montreal on Oct. 24, goes to Montreal on Oct. 31 and plays host to Hamilton on Nov. 8. There is a chance this team could be 8-10 before and with that, they could play host to the Eastern semifinal.

Jimmie Johnson, the three-time defending Sprint Cup champion, won the Triple A 400 at the Monster Mile at Dover yesterday, but 50-year-old Mark Martin was second and he remains 10 points ahead of Johnson in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

It was Johnson’s fourth win at Dover, his second this year and he’s now just eight consistent races away from a fourth straight Sprint Cup title.

Great win over Toronto on Saturday night but there is a downside. The 4-8 Bombers are back in the playoff hunt and that means Winnipeg will have to go with the veteran Michael Bishop for the remainder of the season. There will be very little opportunity to play Casey Bramlet or Ricky Santos, the alleged “quarterbacks of the future.”

Because of that, one senses this team won’t improve dramatically next year. And this team still needs to improve dramatically next year if Mike Kelly is going to be around for long time, not for just a good time.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

Wayne Gretzky resigned yesterday as head coach of the Phoenix Coyotes and was almost immediately replaced by former Dallas Stars head coach Dave Tippett. Gretzky, who is owed $22.5 million by the Coyotes and as a result, was caught up in the team’s bankruptcy, had not shown up at training camp. He said yesterday that because he was not a part of either bid for the team, he should step away now.

The National Hockey League came to Winnipeg last night as about 11,000 watched Marty St. Louis score his second of the game, on a power play, from Vincent Lecavalier with 6.6 seconds left in overtime as the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-3 at the MTS Centre.

There were seven other games on the NHL’s pre-season schedule last night… here are some highlights…

Anaheim 3 Vancouver 2
Vancouver head coach Alain Vigneault was given a three-year extension by the Canucks, then Teemu Selanne beat Andrew Raycroft with the winning goal with only 1:11 left in OT.

Boston 2 Montreal 1 (SO)
Patrice Bergeron scored the shootout winner. Bruins goalie Tim Thomas made 33 saves.

Philadelphia 2 New Jersey 1 (OT)

Columbus 5 Pittsburgh 2
Sidney Crosby suffered a groin injury and left the game after three shifts. The Penguins said they did not think the injury was serious.

NY Rangers 3 Washington 2
Marian Gaborik scored twice to lead the Rangers.

Dallas 3 Colorado 2
Loui Eriksson scored twice for Dallas.

St. Louis 4 Minnesota 1
Alexander Steen scored one of the Blues goals. Andy McDonald scored twice.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have another quarterback, that’s the third in two weeks. Yesterday, the Bombers added import Adam DiMichele, who was released by the Eagles last month and Calgary more recently. DiMichelle is on the practice roster.

Week 13 in the Canadian Football League begins tonight with a TSN doubleheader. Montreal is at Hamilton at 6 then B.C. is at Calgary at 9. On Saturday, Saskatchewan plays at Edmonton at 5 and then, the Hall of Fame Game at Canad Inns Stadium as Toronto faces Winnipeg at 8. Every game is on TSN HD.

It’s Week 3 on the NFL schedule and there are some very good games on Sunday: the biggest one is probably 2-0 San Francisco at 2-0 Minnesota, along with Tennessee at the unbeaten New York Jets, Miami at San Diego, even Kansas City at Philadelphia as Michael Vick is eligible to play his first regular-season game since 2006, and on Sunday night, Indianapolis plays at Arizona. Joe and I will have our NFL picks coming up at 8:30.

In the Majors, the last race is in the American League’s Central Division. Last night, with the Minnesota Twins idle, the Detroit Tigers just held on and beat Cleveland 6-5 to take a three-game lead with 10 games left.

Finally, in golf, Sean O’Hair, at four-under 66, leads after the first round of the Tour Championship in Atlanta. Tiger Woods, Padraig Harrington and Stewart Cink are tied for second, one shot back, at three-under 67.

7:15 CFL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

The happiest man in the Canadian Football League is probably Canadian rush end Riall Johnson.

When Johnson was traded from Toronto to Winnipeg last February he updated his Facebook site by saying he would rather retire than report to the Blue Bombers. Well, he reported to Winnipeg but he wasn’t happy about it. Now, however, he’s thrilled Riall Johnson might even get his ticket to the Grey Cup punched.

Four years after lifting a ban of hard liquor advertising on its cars, NASCAR’s distilled spirits till is running dry.

The Sprint Cup Series lost two liquor sponsors this week as Jack Daniels (backer of Richard Childress’s No. 07 Chevrolet driven by Casey Mears) and Jim Beam (on the No. 7 Toyota of Robby Gordon Motorsports) announced they were leaving after the season. Jack Daniels leaving NASCAR? It’s definitely a recession.

4:50 PM BLUE BOMBERS REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS REPORT. Brought to you by Western Paint and Wallcovering. 521 Hargrave Street and 1510 St. Mary’s Road.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have another quarterback, that’s the third in two weeks. Yesterday, the Bombers added import Adam DiMichele, who was released by the Eagles last month and Calgary more recently. DiMichelle is on the practice roster.

Obviously, if the Bombers don’t win tomorrow night against Toronto, Michael Bishop will be released and head coach Mike Kelly will go with the kids down the stretch.

Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

The National Hockey League comes to Winnipeg again tonight. Once again, it’s pre-season hockey as the Tampa Bay Lightning play host to the Edmonton Oilers at the MTS centre. Yesterday, True North Sports and Entertainment announced that almost 10,000 tickets have been sold for tonight’s game.

Last night in the NHL there were nine pre-season games on the schedule…

Calgary 5 Edmonton 3
Former Moose Jason Jaffray had one of the Calgary goals while Winkler’s Dustin Penner scored one for Edmonton. And Theoren Fleury had an assist. Fleury has scored in all four pre-season games that he’s played.

Vancouver 4 San Jose 3 (SO)
Former Moose Mason Raymond had a goal and the shootout winner.

Buffalo 3 Toronto 2

Washington 6 Toronto 2
Mike Knuble and Alexander Ovechkin each had two goals and an assist.

Phoenix 4 Tampa Bay 3 (SO)
Jim Balsillie says if he wins the bid to purchase the Coyotes, he’ll guarantee that the team plays in Phoenix this season. Steven Stamkos and Vincent Lecavalier each scored for Tampa last night.

Atlanta 5 Nashville 4

Colorado 3 Los Angeles 2

New Jersey 4 NY Islanders 2

Florida 4 Dallas 1

Week 13 in the Canadian Football League begins tomorrow night with a TSN doubleheader. Montreal is at Hamilton at 6 then B.C. is at Calgary at 9. On Saturday, Saskatchewan plays at Edmonton at 5 and then Toronto comes to Winnipeg at 8. Every game is on TSN HD

Joe and I will have our NFL picks coming up at 8:30.

In the Majors, the only real race left is in the American League Central and there was no change last night. Detroit beat Cleveland 11-3 while Minnesota knocked ff the White Sox 8-6, so Detroit still leads the Twins by 2 ½ games.

Finally, Nicole McMillan of Winnipeg has been appointed executive director of the Canadian Tour’s Players Cup in Winnipeg, while her husband Rob McMillan has been named executive chairman. They’ll replace Mitch Zalnasky, who steps down at year’s end.

And the Tour Championship starts today. Tiger Woods, the favourite to win the FedEx Cup.

7:15 CFL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

It’s a big week in the CFL and with only seven games left on the schedule it’s going to be a gigantic week in the West Division.

Heading into games tonight and tomorrow, the Calgary Stampeders, Saskatchewan Roughriders and Edmonton Eskimos are all tied for top spot with records of 6-5 while the B.C. Lions are just one game back. And, don’t forget, the Lions, by adding Casey Printers, and the Stampeders, by trading for Romby Bryant and Arjei Franklin, got significantly better this week.

This week, the NASCAR Sprint Cup boys are at the Monster, Dover International Speedway for the Triple A 400, the second race in the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup.

This is one of the most interesting race tracks on the circuit, especially the start where 43 cars slam into Turn 1. It’s white-knuckle driving and it makes the Monster the most entertaining track in NASCAR. The Triple A 400 goes Sunday at noon on ABC.

Tomorrow night, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers play host to the Toronto Argonauts in the 2009 Hall of Fame game and while it may not matter to anyone who is being inducted into the Hall – there are no former Bombers – the game itself is extremely important.

If the Bombers win and go to 4-8, they’re right back in the playoff hunt. Lose and fall to 3-9 and it will be time to think about next year. In fact, lose, and then release Michael Bishop and let Casey Bramlet and Ricky Santos share the quarterbacking duties for the rest of the season.

Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2009

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

Barrin Simpson is no longer welcome by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The star middle linebacker has been told by Bomber head coach Mike Kelly not to return to the locker room, to meetings or to hang out at practice. Yesterday, the CFL’s board of governors ruled in favour of Simpson’s grievance, the one that he filed last week. The board said Simpson would be placed on the one-game injured list not the nine-game list. So now that he’s come off that list, if he can’t be traded quickly he will likely have to be released. His salary now counts toward the cap. The Bombers play Toronto Saturday night at 8 at Canad Inns Stadium.

Week 13 in the Canadian Football League begins Friday night with a TSN doubleheader. Montreal is at Hamilton at 6 then B.C. is at Calgary at 9. On Saturday, Saskatchewan plays at Edmonton at 5 and then Toronto comes to Winnipeg at 8. Every game is on TSN HD

Last night in the NHL there were six pre-season games on the schedule… last night on TSN

Toronto 3 Pittsburgh 2 (SO)
A couple more fights for the Bay Street Bullies last night. Nazem Kadri, who is going back to junior, tied the game late in the third period and the won it in the shootout. Pittsburgh, however, dressed an AHL lineup.

Columbus 6 Boston 5

Philadelphia 5 Detroit 2
James van Riemsdyk, who is having a tremendous pre-season, scored twice for the Flyers. Simon Gagne, who was injured at the Canadian Olympic camp in Calgary in August, made his return to the line up for Philly last night.

Florida 3 Dallas 1

Los Angeles 4 NY Islanders 2

Tampa 2 Phoenix 1
Last night’s game was played in Everett, Wash. The Lightning face the Edmonton Oilers right here in Winnipeg, tomorrow night at MTS Centre.

In the Majors, Detroit beat Cleveland 3-1 while Minnesota knocked off the White Sox 8-6 so Detroit remains 2 1/2 games ahead of the Twins in the race for the American League Central title.

Finally, the Winnipeg Goldeyes sent the players to be named later to Joliet that were part of the trade that brought all-star third baseman Vince Harrison to Winnipeg. The rights to negotiate with pitcher Bear Bay, third baseman/catcher Brent Metheny and former closer Matt Davis were sent to Joliet yesterday.

7:15 CFL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

There may not be a more important football game played this than Saturday night’s Bombers-Argos battle at Canad Inns Stadium. If the Bombers win and go to 4-8, they’re right back in the playoff hunt. Lose and fall to 3-9 and it will be time to think about next year.

Lose, and let Casey Bramlet and Ricky Santos share the quarterbacking duties for the rest of the season.

This week, the NASCAR Sprint Cup boys are at Dover International Speedway for the AAA 400.

Jimmie Johnson won the spring race at Dover and he has to be the favourite this week. The Triple A 400 goes Sunday at noon on ABC and TSN.

Barrin Simpson is no longer a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The star middle linebacker, who is on the CFL’s nine-game disabled list, has been old by head coach Mike Kelly not to return to the locker room, to meetings or to hang out at practice.

Yesterday, the CFL’s board of governors ruled in favour of Simpson’s grievance filed last week. The board said Simpson would be placed on the one-game injured list. Now that he’s come off that list, if he can’t be traded quickly he will likely have to be released.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

Casey Printers is back. But he’s not in Winnipeg. On a day of trades, signings and releases in the CFL, Printers was the first to move as he joined the practice roster of his old team, the B.C. Lions.

Then the Bombers got into it. Winnipeg released No. 3 quarterback Bryan Randall and then made their second trade in as many days, acquiring yet another quarterback. He’ll be their ninth since training camp started. The Bombers dealt away non-import defensive ends Riall Johnson and Shawn Mayne in order to acquire import quarterback Ricky Santos from the Montreal Alouettes. Santos was the No. 4 quarterback in Montreal behind Anthony Calvillo, Adrian McPherson and Chris Leak.

Every game is on TSN HD.

Great Monday Nighter on the tube last night. Peyton Manning drove his team down the field on its final possession to lead the Colts to a 27-23 comeback win over the Miami Dolphins.

Last night in the NHL there were eight pre-season games on the schedule… last night on TSN 2.

Montreal 4 Pittsburgh 3
Brian Gionta had two goals and an assist and Carey Price made 28 saves to get the win.

Vancouver 5 Calgary 4 (SO)
Daniel Sedin tied the game with his second goal with a mere .2 seconds remaining in regulation and then scored the winner in the shootout. Theoren Fleury set up the fourth goal of the game for Calgary.

NY Rangers 4 Detroit 2
Marian Gaborik made his debut with the Rangers and had an assist. Winnipeg’s Derek Meech played 22 minutes and had another strong game.

Buffalo 2 Washington 1

Columbus 5 Minnesota 1

Anaheim 3 San Jose 2
39-year-old ex-Jet Teemu Selanne scored his first pre-season goal.

Atlanta 4 Carolina 2
Nik Antropov had three assists in his home debut with Atlanta.

And Ottawa beat Tampa Bay 3-1
The Lightning played in Regina last night, they’ll be here in Winnipeg to meet Edmonton on Thursday night.

Meanwhile, more and more it appears as if Wayne Gretzky won’t be back to coach the Phoenix Coyotes this season, but the Coyotes did make a coaching move, hiring former Winnipegger and Canadian National Team head coach Dave King as an assistant.

In the Majors, Minnesota beat Chicago 7-0 to pull to within two and a half games of the Detroit Tigers in the AL Central.

7:15 CFL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

During his daily news conference on Monday, Mike Kelly admitted that he was as frustrated with his football team as any fan, but also conceded that there will be no change at quarterback.

‘Michael Bishop will start at quarterback on Saturday,” Kelly said. “Right now, it’s love the one your with.” Indeed. Part of that, of course, is because nobody else wants to be with you.

While Mark Martin leads the Chase for the Sprint Cup with nine races left, one driver already appears out of it. Kasey Kahne’s No. 9 Budweiser Dodge blew up after 66 laps on Sunday in New Hampshire, and by the time Martin crossed the finish line, Kahne’s team had already packed up and gone home.

Jimmie Johnson is the only driver ever to come back and win after falling 100 points behind in the Chase. Kahne is now 161 back. He’ll need a miracle.

Casey Printers re-joined team for which he was named the league’s most outstanding player in 2004.

Yesterday, Printers agreed to sign up for the B.C. Lions practice roster and be evaluated by the Lions staff. Good move by the Lions.

Here in Winnipeg, the Bombers acquired the fourth-string quarterback of the Montreal Alouettes. Better than the No. 5 QB, I guess.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

It was a wild and woolly day for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

First, the Bombers fell to 3-8 on the season, drilled 33-14 by the Alouettes in Montreal yesterday. Avon Cobourne scored two touchdowns and Damon Duval kicked five field goals as the Alouettes took advantage of four Bomber turnovers — three interceptions and a fumble. The Bombers have now thrown up 10 interceptions in three weeks. Good news, however, 3-8 Toronto comes to Winnipeg this Saturday night at 8.

After the game, the Bombers traded WR Romby Bryant and SB Arjei Franklin to the Calgary Stampeders for receivers Jabari Arthur and Titus Ryan, defensive lineman Odell Willis and a couple of 2010 draft picks. Program sales should rise at Canad Inns Stadium.

In the other CFL game yesterday, Ricky Ray hit Maurice Mann for a game-winning 68-yard touchdown pass with 69 seconds remaining as Edmonton knocked off Saskatchewan, in Regina, 31-27.

It was Week 2 in the NFL yesterday…OK Sport Select players, here are your NFL scores… first the outright winners…

In auto racing, 50-year-old Mark Martin won the first race of the Chase for the Sprint Cup beating Denny Hamlin by just .16 seconds to take the checkered flag at the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Speedway. It was Martin’s fifth win of the year.

7:15 CFL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

On Sunday afternoon in Montreal, we had a chance to see Winnipeg’s new Casey the Quarterback.

Bramlet, not Printers, went one-for-eight with two interceptions as the Bombers were drilled 33-14 by Montreal. It was the seventh time in 11 games this season that the Bombers failed to score more than 15 points. The Bombers have now thrown 10 interceptions in three games. Hmmmm, wrong Casey, I’d say.

50-year-old Mark Martin won the first race of the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Martin beat Denny Hamlin by just .16 seconds to take the checkered flag at the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway.

Martin remains in first place in the standings, leading Hamlin and Jimmie Johnson by 35 points.

We continue to hear it and we will probably continue to hear it, but Mike Kelly has been clear. Casey Printers is not coming to Winnipeg. How sad. This team is desperate.

Casey Bramlet did come to town and went one-for-eight with two interceptions as the Bombers were drilled 33-14 by Montreal. The Bombers have now thrown 10 interceptions in three games. Why is Mike Kelly so stubborn? He has a quarterback problem and he refuses to even try to fix it. That’s quite disconcerting.

The big one, the Islanders in Calgary as Theoren Fleury returned to the NHL after six years away from the league…

Calgary 5 NY Islanders 4 (SO)
Winnipeg’s Nigel Dawes scored Calgary’s first goal. Dawes played on a line with Fleury and Daymond Langkow. Dawes also assisted on two others for a three-point night. But the hero was Fleury. He was the only player to score in the shoot-out.

Nashville 5 Atlanta 0
How about Carey Wilson’s son Colin? The rookie scored Nashville’s fifth goal and added two assists.

7:15 CFL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

Last week, we read a story in one of our local newspapers that there was a Plan B in case David Asper’s attempt to build a new football stadium at the University of Winnipeg fails. Apparently, the Bombers were prepared to build one on their own.

Well, after a weekend of checking with four team directors and Mayor Sam Katz I can solidly report that Plan B is a figment of someone’s imagination. Nice try though, it was an interesting story. Too bad it wasn’t true.

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM NASCAR REPORT. Brought to you by 3M Automotive and Rondex. At 177 Isabel, Rondex is celebrating 37 years of auto body supply service.

The 2010 Sprint Cup schedule was released last week and there were virtually no changes. Frankly, there should have been.

I’m an advocate for changing the Chase schedule, I believe there should be a road race and I believe the Chase just should not exist as it does because it was that way before the Chase series began. In fact, I’d like to see the entire seasons start and end at Daytona.

The Bombers head into Montreal on Sunday and we’ll learn a lot about the character of this team in that game. If the Blue gets drilled by the Als, which is certainly possible, they might be done for the season. However, if they play well, Toronto had better watch out next week.

As I say, we’ll learn a lot on Sunday.

Dallas 4 Tampa Bay 3 (SO): Brad Riuchards had a goal and scored the shootout winner.

Florida 2 Ottawa1:

Anaheim 3 Phoenix 2 (SO): Bobby Ryan scored both Anaheim goals and the winner in the shootout.

The local mainstream media loves it when Bomber head coach Mike Kelly puts his foot in his mouth. Yesterday morning during an interview with Tom & Joe on CITI, ol’ Mike almost did it again.

Asked about the 17-year-old who had started the “Fire Mike Kelly” Facebook site, Kelly responded, “Facebook? I thought that was a website for 14-year-old girls. Geez, I’m going to get in trouble again for saying that, aren’t I?” Well, not here, Mike. Here, that’s our Quote of the Year.
