Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
The Winnipeg Goldeyes are in the playoffs. The Goldeyes scored three runs in the top of the 10th — Brent Metheny drove in the winning run — and beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 5-2 in Gary yesterday. With the win, the 49-32 Goldeyes not only moved into sole possession of first place in the Northern League, one game ahead of Gary, but also guaranteed themselves a spot in the post-season. Don’t forget the Goldeyes return home tonight and open a three-game series with Fargo. It will be the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock Night, presented by 92-CITI-FM.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders hung on and beat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 33-23 and that’s good news for the Bombers. Hamilton fell to 4-3 on the season only four points ahead of Winnipeg. The 2-5 Bombers, of course, lost 39-12 to the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday night in a game that is better left forgotten.
Week 8 in the CFL begins and ends with a doubleheader on Friday night as the two bye weeks begin. Friday at 6:30, it’s Saskatchewan at Montreal and then at 9:30, it’s Winnipeg at B.C. Both games are on Friday Night Football on TSN.
In the majors, Tampa Bay beat Toronto 5-2. The Jays are now 55-61, 18 games back of the first place Yankees in the AL East. The Yanks and Boston both lost yesterday, but New York still leads the Red Sox by 7 ½. However, the Red Sox lost 4-3 to Texas and with the win, the Rangers took over the American League wild card spot from Boston .
Tiger Woods lost the 91st PGA Championship as Woods, leading by two to start the final round, shot a three-over 75 and Y.E. Yang, two back at the start, fired a final round two-under 70 to beat Woods by three and win his first major.
In auto racing, Brian Vickers won the NASCAR Sprint Cup race in Michigan after the leader, Jimmie Johnson ran out of gas with two laps to go.
And finally, Jamaica’s Usain Bolt set a world record in the 100-metre sprint at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin yesterday. Bolt blew away the field in a scorching time of 9.58 seconds.
7:15 CFL REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
The worst offensive line in the CFL put on a show on Saturday night at Canad Inns Stadium. It’s great to suggest that quarterback Michael Bishop or offensive co-ordinator Mike Kelly make up the problem, but when a quarterback has no time to throw and a runningback can’t find a hole, the offence isn’t going to work.
It’s one thing to chase off Kevin Glenn, but when this team ran off Dan Goodspeed, Alexander Gauthier and Dominic Picard, it ran off its hawgs. And Saturday night, the Bombers proved hat their problems ran a lot deeper than just QB and coach.
8:15 NASCAR REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM NASCAR REPORT. Brought to you by 3M Automotive and Rondex. At 177 Isabel, Rondex is celebrating 37 years of auto body supply service.
Jimmie Johnson ran out of gas, but Brian Vickers sure didn’t. Vickers became the first driver in a Toyota to win at Michigan International Speedway and in the process, closed within 12 points of the making the Chase.
Meanwhile, it was the second time this season that Johnson’s crew gambled on fuel at Michigan and lost. What’s that old saying, fool me once.?

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM RED RIVER CO-OP SPEEDWAY REPORT. Brought to you by Red River Co-Op Speedway. The fastest sport on the Prairies!
What a night last Thursday night at Red River Co-Op Speedway. There were six different races including a 4-cylinder makeup race from the rainout on July 23.
Let’s honour at the winners: Frank Veert won that postponed four-cylinder race; Rick Delaine won the modifieds; Henry Peters took the streets; Kevin Penner was the super stock winner; Doug Krause won the Thursday night 4-cylinder event; and Lee McRae won the super trucks.

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS REPORT. Brought to you by Western Paint and Wallcovering. 521 Hargrave Street and 1510 St. Mary’s Road.
Wow! That was a clunker, wasn’t it? On Saturday night at Canad Inns Stadium, the Bombers were drilled 39-12 by the first place Montreal Alouettes.
But here’s the scary part. The Bombers go into B.C. this Friday, get a bye, then play back-to-back against Saskatchewan and then go into Montreal before playing sad-sack Toronto in Winnipeg on Sept. 26. Can you say 2-9? After Saturday’s mess, 2-9 seems frighteningly realistic.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
Week 7 in the CFL started with a bang last night. There were three touchdowns in the final three minutes and 35 seconds and Ricky Ray hit Fred Stamps with a 23-yard touchdown pass with just nine seconds left as the Edmonton Eskimos beat the Calgary Stampeders 38-35. Tonight, it’s B.C. is at Toronto, with Cody Pickett, not Kerry Joseph at quarterback for the Argos. That game goes at 6:30. On Sunday, Hamilton plays at Saskatchewan at 6 p.m. All games are on TSN.
It will be a big night at Canad Inns Stadium tomorrow night when the 2-4 Winnipeg Blue Bombers play host to the 5-1, first-place Montreal Alouettes at 7 o’clock. The Als are 7 ½ point favourites. Yesterday, Bomber coach Mike Kelly announced that right guard Kelly Bates would not play tomorrow and could be released. Ryan Donnelly will start at right guard against the Als.
As we told you on Wednesday, Michael Vick would sign this week, and he has. Yesterday, the Philadelphia Eagles announced that Vick as signed a one-year-plus-option deal worth $1.6 million in Year 1 and as much as $5.2 million in the option year. Heading into cap, he’s the backup quarterback to Donovan McNabb.
The Gary SouthShore RailCats moved into a first-place tie in the Northern League by drilling the Winnipeg Goldeyes 6-2 in the first game of a four-game series in Gary last night. Game 2 goes tonight. Don’t forget the Goldeyes return home on Monday night and open a three-game series with Fargo. It will be the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock Night, presented by 92-CITI-FM.
In the majors, the New York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays had yesterday off, but the Boston Red sox played and lost, beaten handily by Detroit Tigers starter Justin Verlander who allowed only four hits over eight innings as Detroit beat Boston 2-0. The Red Sox are now six games back of the Yanks in the race for first in the AL East.
Tiger Woods fired a five-under 67 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota yesterday to take the first-round lead in the PGA Championship. Padraig Harrington is second at minus-four, Vijay Singh is one of six golfers at minus-3. Phil Mickelson, Stephen Ames and Mike Weir are all at two-over, 74.
Finally, the Manitoba Moose schedule has been released and the home opener will be Oct. 2 against the Houston Aeros. The new Texas Stars will be Manitoba’s opponent for the New Year’s Eve game on Dec. 31.
7:15 CFL REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo, entered the debate over U.S. health care reform on Tuesday, simply by recalling his faith during his wife’s valiant and successful effort to beat non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
During an interview for ChristianWeek magazine, Calvillo was asked about his desire to move back to his hometown of L.A. and said it was something he’d thought about “after football,” but then said he worried about health care. His wife has a pre-existing condition and can’t get insurance. Calvillo said it was likely he’ll retire in Montreal simply because of Canada’s health care system.

How good a year has Tony Stewart had in his first season as an owner?
Simply by starting at Michigan yesterday, Stewart clinched a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup and is now able to concentrate on the playoffs. Pretty nice for a guy who decided to go out on his own. Whether he wins the Cup or not doesn’t matter now. He’s already a success.
4:00 PM RED RIVER CO-OP SPEEDWAY REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM RED RIVER CO-OP SPEEDWAY REPORT. Brought to you by Red River Co-Op Speedway. The fastest sport on the Prairies!
OK, everybody, just a quick schedule note for the month of September.
The September schedule has to change to comply with Wissota’s policy that no sanctioned track can run sanctioned Wissota races during their Wissota 100 that’s held on Saturday, September 19th. To comply with their request, Red River Co-Op Speedway’s scheduled Street Stock Special on September 19 will switch dates with the 4 and 8 Cylinder Enduro (with Lightning Sprints) and will now run on Sept. 12.
4:50 PM BLUE BOMBERS REPORT

A win tomorrow night over the Montreal Alouettes is almost imperative for this season’s version of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Players are beginning to speak openly about rifts throughout the entire football team, but these are problems that can always be fixed with a few Ws.
It now looks like right guard Kelly Bates is just about finished with the Blue. So things look bleak on Friday. But it could all change tomorrow night with a victory over first-place Montreal.

Robinson Cano singled home Alex Rodriguez with the winning run in the bottom of the 11th as the Yankees beat the Toronto Blue 4-3 at Yankee Stadium yesterday. Meanwhile Boston beat Detroit 8-2 as Josh Beckett improved to 14-4, so the Red Sox still trail the Yanks by 5 1/2 games in the AL East.
The 2-4 Winnipeg Blue Bombers will play a huge game this coming Saturday night when they face the 5-1 first-place Montreal Alouettes at Canad Inns Stadium. The Als are 7 ½ point favourites. This Saturday night’s game goes at 7 o’clock here in Winnipeg, it’s also live on TSN HD.

7:15 CFL REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
This is a big weekend for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. At 2-4, they’re far from out of the battle for first place in the Eastern Conference, but they must start winning and tomorrow would be a real nice place to start.
The Bombers get a test, a 7 p.m. matchup with the 5-1 first-place Montreal Alouettes and the Als are 7 ½-point favourites on the road. A win tomorrow, however, and the Bombers are right back in the hunt.

4:50 PM BLUE BOMBERS REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS REPORT. Brought to you by Western Paint and Wallcovering. 521 Hargrave Street and 1510 St. Mary’s Road.
At some point in time, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are going to snap out of it. This is a team with too much talent and too much heart to carry a losing record for very long.
That’s why Saturday’s game against Montreal is important. The Als are 5-1, but they’re on the road and they have already proven they aren’t invincible. If the Bombers can play as well, for 60 minutes, as they did in the second half against Calgary last Saturday, they should give the Alouettes a good run.

He also compiled 23 receiving yards. Let’s hope Fred Reid gets the ball on Saturday night in Winnipeg.

In the majors, the Toronto Blue Jays gave up Alex Rios on waivers to the Chicago White Sox and then went out and beat the New York Yankees 5-4. The Yanks seven-game win streak was halted. 7:15 CFL REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
Winnipeg fans love to moan and complain about their Blue Bombers and they have every right to do that. However, as bad as the Bombers have been on occasion this season, they haven’t been as bad as Toronto.
On Friday night, the Argos suffered a 25-0 shutout loss at the hands of the Montreal Alouettes. Toronto became the first team to be shut out in a CFL game since 2005, the first Argos squad to get shutout since September 13, 1992 and the first team to be shut out by the Alouettes in 33 years. Now that’s humiliating. The Bombers aren’t humiliating. At least, not yet.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Mike Kelly spoke with Tom and Joe on Monday morning and made one promise to his team’s fans. The group wearing blue and gold on Saturday night at Canad Inns Stadium will be the hardest working team on the field.
The Blue Bombers might not have the same talent level as the Montreal Alouettes, but they do have heart. We’ll just how much heart it takes to overcome the best team in the CFL so far this season.

In the majors, the Toronto Blue Jays got homers from Kevin Millar, Vernon Wells and Marco Scutaro and beat Baltimore 7-3 at Rogers Centre yesterday. The Jays play the AL East’s first place New York Yankees tonight at 6 on Rogers SportsNet.
The 2-4 Winnipeg Blue Bombers will have a major test this coming Saturday night when they face the 5-1 first-place Montreal Alouettes at Canad Inns Stadium. The Bombers are coming off Saturday night’s 31-23 loss in Calgary. To their credit, the Bombers had a solid second half and covered the 14 1/2-point spread. This Saturday night’s game goes at 7 o’clock here in Winnipeg, live on TSN HD.
Week 7 in the CFL starts Thursday night with Calgary at Edmonton at 8 p.m. On Friday B.C. is at Toronto at 6:30. On Saturday, Montreal comes to Winnipeg at 7 and on Sunday, Hamilton plays at Saskatchewan at 6 p.m.

And in the NHL, here’s a strange one, Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Kane hit someone. Apparently it was a cab driver. Kane was arrested yesterday morning and charged with second-degree robbery, fourth-degree criminal mischief and theft of services after what appears to have been an ugly dispute with a cab driver in Buffalo over 20 cents in change. Kane will be paid $875,000 this season. Think alcohol was involved?

On Saturday night in Calgary, Stamps quarterback Henry Burris threw for 356 yards and two touchdowns as the Stampeders whipped the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 31-23.
The Bombers played solidly in the second half, after a disastrous first half, but playing half a football game against the defending Grey Cup champions will get a team nothing heartache.

Saturday night in Calgary, the Blue Bombers fell behind 23-3 at halftime before deciding that a ground game might work. What a novel idea.
Behind the running of Yvenson Bernard and Fred Reid, the Bombers outscored Calgary 20-8 in the second half and eventually lost 31-23. Amazingly, however, after pounding Calgary on the ground in the third and early part of the fourth quarter, the Bomber coaches went back to the marginal passing game that put them in the hole in the first place. It didn’t work. Run the football. It works.

The 2-3 Winnipeg Blue Bombers play in Calgary against the 2-3 Stampeders at 8:30 tomorrow night on TSN. The Bombers are trying to win their second straight game and get their second straight win over the Stamps. That’s why it’s odd that the spread in this game has Calgary favoured by 14 ½ points.

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
It’s going to be quite a show on Nov. 29, when CFL fans meet in Calgary for the 97th Grey Cup game.
In fact, you can still get a ticket for the Grand National Drunk, but you’d better hurry. Only 1,000 tickets remain to be sold for the big game at McMahon Stadium. And who knows? Maybe the Bombers will fool some people and find a way to get there.
This past weekend, the NASCAR Sprint Cup boys drove in the final road race of the season at Watkins Glen in upstate New York.
And once again, all the talk centered around putting a road race in the 10-event Chase for the Sprint Cup. Frankly, I’m all for it. Just once in a championship final, NASCAR drivers need to turn right. A road race always proves who the best drive is that week and should be in the playoffs.

Pretty hard to argue with the CFL’s selection as offensive player of the month.
Anthony Calvillo not only led his Montreal Alouettes to a 4-1 record, the best start of any CFL team, but he led the league in both yards and completion percentage for the month. He completed 75.6% of his passes for 1,519 yards and seven touchdowns compared with only two interceptions. For his career, Calvillo has now passed for 60,202 yards and 335 touchdowns. He just might be one of the two or three best of all time.

With only five races to go before the start of the Chase for the Sprint Cup, the NASCAR boys are at Watkins Glen for the second and final road race of the season.
Last year’s winner here was Kyle Busch, although don’t be surprised if there’s a surprise. There often is, when NASCAR drivers have to turn right. The big race goes Sunday at noon on TSN.

For Scott Schultz, the insurance business was just too good to pass up. Earlier this week, the nine-year CFL veteran announced his retirement from the Saskatchewan Roughriders simply because The 31-year-old Schultz and his business partners recently bought an insurance agency in Regina and Schultz will now operate the business on a full-time basis.
The six-foot-two, 292-pound Schultz played his entire career in Saskatchewan green. A product of Moose Jaw minor football, he had 178 career tackles and 35 sacks during his tenure with the Riders.

We’re only five races away from the Chase for the Sprint Cup and this week, it’s road race time again.
The drivers head to Watkins Glen for another battle of right turns in the greatest race name on the NASCAR Circuit: The Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen. I’m sorry, I have trouble get serious about something called The Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at the Glen. It goes Sunday at Noon on TSN.

The Reports for Tuesday, August 4, 2009: The Northern League To Expand By Two Teams in 2010
Tuesday, August 4th, 2009
Tuesday, August 4, 2009
Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
It was another huge weekend for the Winnipeg Goldeyes. The Fish won two out of three in Schaumburg this past weekend, improved to 43-25 on the season and moved four full games ahead of Gary in the race for first in the Northern League. The Fish open a three-game series with Joliet tonight at 7 at Canwest Park.
Meanwhile, in the race for the playoffs, consider this: The Goldeyes have 28 games remaining. If the Fish go 14-14 down the stretch, fifth-place Kansas City can’t catch them.
Next year, the Northern League will have eight teams. Yesterday, the league announced that the Rockford, Ill., RiverHawks will join the Lake County Fielders as the league expands by two teams next season.
The 2-3 Winnipeg Blue Bombers play again this Saturday night at 8:30 in Calgary. The Stamps are also 2-3. Winnipeg beat Calgary 40-32 at Canad Inns Stadium back in Week 2. The game, as always, is on TSN. The Bombers are coming off last Saturday’s 13-12 win in Toronto. Michael Bishop will remain as the team’s No. 1 quarterback.
Meanwhile, Week 6 in the CFL starts Friday night with Toronto at Montreal at 6:30 and Saskatchewan at B.C. at 9:30 on TSN’s Friday Night Football.
In the NHL, Jim Balsillie might not be dead yet. Phoenix bankruptcy Judge Redfield T. Baum has moved the local auction of the Coyotes from tomorrow to Sept. 10. And that means there is a good chance Jerry Reinsdorf’s $148 million bid will no longer be on the table. The NHL is worried that Balsillie might still get the team and the league is very worried that Balsillie will move it to Hamilton.
In horse racing, the pre-race favourite Smuggler’s Hold with Adolfo Morales aboard won the $75,000 Manitoba Lotteries Derby at Assiniboia Downs yesterday.
In auto racing, Denny Hamlin won the NASCAR Sprint Cup’s rain-delayed Pennsylvania 500 at Long Pond yesterday afternoon. It was Hamlin’s first win of the year.
And finally, it’s going to be a big, big night at Red River Co-Op Speedway on Thursday night. The NLRA Late Models are back in town for another highlight of the 2009 racing season. The track opens at 6:30, racing starts at 7:30.
7:15 CFL REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
I’ve long contended that unlike the NFL, where great plays tend to lead to victories, in the CFL, it’s all about mistakes.
For example, in Toronto on Saturday, depending entirely on your point of view, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers forced seven turnovers (the Argos gave up the football seven times) and beat the Toronto Argonauts 13-12 (the Argos picked up a delay of game penalty with 30 seconds left to push Jason Medlock out of field goal range and lose 13-12). Again, depending on your point of view, this game was either about great defence (or just plain bad football).
Denny Hamlin in the No. 11 FedEx Toyota passed Clint Bowyer with 10 laps to go and then held off Juan Pablo Montoya for his first victory of the year at the Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa. Sam Hornish Jr. was fourth and Kasey Kahne finished fifth.
Amazingly, for Hamlin, three of his five career wins have come at Pocono.

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM RED RIVER CO-OP SPEEDWAY REPORT. Brought to you by Red River Co-Op Speedway. The fastest sport on the Prairies!
Coming up on Thursday, it’s another spectacular night with the NLRA Late Models.
However, before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let’s give a shout out to last week’s winners: Aaron Holtan won the modified class; Tayvia Dorge took the super trucks; Colin Kendall, again won the super stocks, Andy Martens took the street stocks division; and Amber Balcaen, on a great night for the ladies, won the lightning sprints.
