Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
The Winnipeg Goldeyes will finish the 2009 regular season in second place in the Northern League and will open the playoffs this Wednesday, with the first of two games in Fargo against the third-place Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. The first round of the post-season returns to Winnipeg on Friday night. Yesterday, the Goldeyes bullpen blew another save opportunity and the Fish lost 3-2 to the Schaumburg Flyers. The final game of the regular season goes tonight at 7 at Canwest Park. It’s Fan Appreciation Night. I can’t even recite all the giveaways.
In the Majors, the Detroit Tigers beat the Tampa Bay Rays 4-3 yesterday as Justin Verlander picked up his 15th win and became the frontrunner for the American League Cy Young Award. Meanwhile, Boston drilled Roy Halladay and the Toronto Blue Jays 7-0 as Boston took a 3½ game lead over Texas in the AL Wild Card race. The Jays play Texas on Rogers SportsNet tonight. In the NL Wild Card race, San Francisco beat Colorado 9-5 to pull into a tie with the Rockies for the Wild Card lead.
The bye weeks are over, Week 10 in the CFL begins Friday night with Montreal at B.C. The Bombers play again Sunday in the Labour Day Classic at Regina against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Meanwhile, In the Prairie Junior Football Conference, the Winnipeg Rifles lost, once again, to the Saskatoon Hilltops, this time 18-16 at Canad Inns Stadium yesterday. The Hilltops are 7-0-1 at Canad Inns Stadium since the Rifles joined the league.
On the NFL pre-season schedule tonight, it’s Minnesota at Houston. Brett Favre is expected to play half the game for the Vikings. It’s on TSN 2 at 7 p.m.
In golf, Heath Slocum finished at 9-under to become the upset winner at The Barclay’s, the FedEx Cup playoff event in Jersey City yesterday. Slocum beat four golfers tied at minus-8 – Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington, Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods. Now, that’s
impressive
Finally, the U.S. Open tennis championship begins today in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
The bye weeks are finished, Week 10 is coming up this week and it all gets serious now.
It’s fall, and the games really start to matter and for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, it’s time to make some real noise. After a week off they’ll start preparing for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. In a period of seven days, the Riders and Bombers play back-to-back games. This period will be both exciting and probably very, very nasty.

NASCAR came to Canada on Sunday. It was NASCAR’s one trip north of the border – it’s the one time every year the government allows the racing industry to use leaded gasoline – and this time the winner was Carl Edwards as he beat Marcos Ambrose on the last lap to claim the Nationwide Series’ NAPA Auto Parts 200.
The big news, however, was that Jacques Villeneuve, in a Toyota, finished fourth on Montreal’s Gilles Villeneuve road course.

The Winnipeg Goldeyes are all alone in second place and they didn’t even have to play. Yesterday afternoon, the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks blew a 7-1 lead heading into the seventh inning and lost 9-7 to the Kansas City T-Bones at home so idle Winnipeg moves a half-game ahead of Fargo as Fargo heads to Gary to play the first place RailCats to finish the season. The Fish will open a four-game series against Schaumburg at Canwest Park tonight. It’s the first game of the final four games of the regular season. Playoffs start next week.
In the Majors, the Texas Rangers beat the New York Yankees 7-2 while the Chicago White Sox beat Boston 9-5, so Texas pulled to within a game and a half of Boston in the American League wild card race.
It’s the bye week for the 3-5 Bombers. Week 9 in the CFL begins tonight with Calgary at Toronto. Cody Pickett will start once again for the Argos who have lost a record nine straight at home. Saturday night, Hamilton plays at Edmonton. Both games are on TSN. Winnipeg plays again on Sunday, Sept. 6 in Regina in the annual Labour Day Classic.
In the NFL, Michael Vick made his debut with the Philadelphia Eagles, got a standing ovation from of the fans in attendance and played pretty well… for six plays. He completed four of four pass attempts for 19 yards, ran out of the Wildcat formation, played in the shotgun and was a wideout. The Eagles obviously have big plans for Vick. Philly won, by the way, 33-32 over visiting Jacksonville.
And finally, in the NHL, Team Canada scrimmaged in front of a sold out Saddledome in Calgary last night. The Reds and Whites toed 2-2 as Ryan Smyth and Corey Perry scored for the White Team and Jeff Carter and Patrick Marleau replied for the Red Team. 19,289 paid between $40 and $85 to watch, essentially, practice.

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
It’s the big week. Get your beer on ice, your high-ball glasses out of the cupboard and your polish up your liver, it’s the week before the Labour Day game.
I’ve received dozens of e-mails from friends who are off to Regina for Sunday’s annual battle between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and I think I know why many of these people, people who haven’t gone in a number of years, are heading back is because there is now a belief in this town that the Bombers running game might just be good enough to beat the Watermelon heads.

After a week off, the NASCAR Sprint Cup boys are headed back into action at Atlanta Motor Speedway this Sunday night. It’s the Pep Boys Auto 500 and it’s the first of the last two races before the Chase to the Sprint Cup.
Tony Stewart leads the Chase, 220 points ahead of Jimmie Johnson and 254 points ahead of Jeff Gordon, but right now the real race is at the other end. Kyle Busch is just 34 points behind Matt Kenseth in the race for the final spot in the playoffs.

Remember our old pal Kevin Glenn. When he was in Winnipeg, he was in a small quarterback controversy with Ryan Dinwiddie and another one, a big one, with Khari Jones. Now he’s in Hamilton and guess what? Quarterback controversy.
Seems there are questions as to whether Glenn or Quinton Porter is really the No. 1 quarterback in Hamilton. Tomorrow night in Edmonton, Porter will start for the Ticats, but don’t think for a second that Glenn won’t be sent in there if Porter struggles. And the controversy talk will start again.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
Juan Diaz drove in both runs to set the Winnipeg Goldeyes franchise record with 89 RBI in one season while Ace Walker pitched brilliantly for 8 2/3 innings to get the win as the Goldeyes won their third straight, beating the Joliet Jackhammers 2-1 at Canwest Park last night to sweep Joliet out of Winnipeg. Meanwhile, with Schaumburg beating Gary 5-2 and Kansas City knocking off Fargo 12-4, the Goldeyes moved back into a tie for second place with the Redhawks, just a half a game back of Gary. The Fish have tonight off, they’ll open a four-game series against Schaumburg at Canwest Park tomorrow night. It’s the final four games of the regular season.
In the Majors, the Toronto Blue Jays avoided a sweep, beating Tampa Bay 3-2 at Rogers Centre yesterday.
It’s the bye week for the 3-5 Bombers. Week 9 in the CFL begins tomorrow night with Calgary at Toronto. Saturday night, Hamilton plays at Edmonton. Both games are on TSN. Winnipeg plays again on Sunday, Sept. 6 in Regina in the annual Labour Day Classic.
In the NFL, New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan announced yesterday that rookie Mark Sanchez will be the team’s starter when the Jets open at Houston on Sept. 13; and tonight in Philedelphia, Michael Vick will play at quarterback when the Eagles play host to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
And finally, in the NHL, it became official yesterday, the league has offered $140 million for the bankrupt Phoenix Coyotes, as the NHL itself hopes to buy the team and then sell it to someone other than Jim Balsillie. Balsillie has offered $212.5 million. A group called Ice Edge has offered, well, something. The league’s$140 million would not include the $8 million owed to Coyotes head coach Wayne Gretzky, but would honour the lease this year. Bankruptcy judge Redfield T. Baum will review the bids next week.

Tonight, Week 9 in the CFL begins with a very intriguing game as the Hamilton Toger-Cats meet the Eskimos in Edmonton. A win by the Eskimos and suddenly Hamilton is 4-4, just two points ahead of Winnipeg with 10 games left in the season.
And as every CFL fan knows, 10 games is an eternity in an eight-team football league. Suddenly, thanks to last Friday’s 37-10 win over the B.C., the Bombers will be back in the hunt.

It’s an off-weekend for the Sprint Cup boys. At least, it’s an off-weekend for most of them. Kyle Busch will be doing the only thing he knows.
Busch, who won last week’s race at Bristol, will be racing in the Camping World Truck Series event at Chicagoland Speedway on Friday night, and then will head to Montreal to run the Nationwide Series race on Sunday. Yeah, that’s quite a weekend off from racing.
4:50 PM BLUE BOMBERS REPORT

While the Bombers have this weekend off, they won’t be resting easily. At 3-5 and coming off that 37-10 shellacking of the B.C. Lions – and yes B.C. really does suck – the Bombers will also be getting mentally ready for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
The Labour Day Classic goes next Sunday followed by the Banjo Bowl on Sept. 13. After the this weekend’s holiday, the Bombers will be seeing green for the next two weeks.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
Juan Diaz tied the Winnipeg Goldeyes franchise record last night with his 29th home run of the season while lead-off man Cory Patton went three-for-four and drove in six runs as the Goldeyes defeated the Joliet Jackhammers 12-7 at Canwest Park last night. It was the Goldeyes 52nd win of the season, that’s one more than last year. The Fish and Hammers will wrap up this three-game series tonight at 7 at the downtown ballpark.
In the Majors, the Tampa Bay Rays got a pair of homers from Carlos Pena and whipped the Toronto Blue Jays 7-3. Pena now leads the American League in home runs with 37. And how about the Colorado Rockies? Troy Tulowitzki drove home the winning run in the 10th as the Rockies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4 to move to within two games of the first-place Dodgers in the NL West.
It’s the bye week for the 3-5 Bombers. Week 9 in the CFL begins Friday night with Calgary at Toronto. Saturday night, Hamilton plays at Edmonton. Both games are on TSN. Winnipeg plays again on Sunday, Sept. 6 in Regina in the annual Labour Day Classic.
In the NHL, there is a surprise every day in Phoenix. Yesterday, right after Jerry Reinsdorf dropped his bid to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes and keep the team in the desert, the league filed a bid to buy the team out of bankruptcy, hoping to sell it later. The league is obviously very nervous about the fact that Jim Balsillie is and always has been the only person interested in paying more than $212 milllion to buy the Coyotes. Of course, he wants to move them to Hamilton, Ont., and the NHL sure doesn’t want that.
And finally, this story cracks me up. When Jerry Jones built his $1.2 billion coliseum for the Dallas Cowboys, he put a digital board over the middle of the field. But he built it 90-feet above the turf and punters, like Tennessee’s A. J. Trapasso, can hit it. The NFL’s competition committee is trying to decide what the rule will be.

Say whatever you like about Fred Reid’s 260-yard rushing game against the B.C. Lions last Friday night, but one thing is for certain. He’s the best running back in the CFL right now.
Reid currently leads the CFL in combined yards with 1,390, yards from scrimmage with 892 and rushing yards with 795. Reid has 160 more rushing yards than No. 2 Avon Cobourne of the Als. Right now, nobody does it better.

With only two races left before the Chase for the Sprint Cup begins, it’s sort of a good ting that the Sprint Cup boys have this week off.
The No. 1 circuit in sock car racing doesn’t go to the line again until next Sunday night when the Pep Boys Auto 500 gets to the starting line at 6 o’clock in Atlanta.

Well, this was a no brainer. Bomber running back Fred Reid was named the Gibson’s Finest offensive player of the week for Week eight, the second time this month Reid has won the award.
Reid had the game of his career Friday setting a Blue Bombers record for rushing yards in a game. Reid ran for a career-high 260 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries in the Bombers’ 37-10 shellacking of the B.C. Lions. Only George Reed who rushed for 268 yards in 1965 and Ron Stewart who ran for 287 yards in 1960 have had more rushing yards in a single game than Reid.
The Reports for Tuesday, August 25, 2009: Goldeyes Beat Joliet on Harrison’s Grand Slam
Tuesday, August 25th, 2009
Tuesday, August 25, 2009
Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
Vince Harrison’s grand slam home run was the difference as the Winnipeg Goldeyes defeated the Joliet Jackhammers 5-3 at Canwest Park last night. Juan Diaz also homered and former big leaguer Bill Pulsipher pitched eight strong innings as the Fish matched last year’s win total with 51. There are still six games left in the regular season and tonight the Goldeyes and Jackhammers will play Game 2 of this series tonight at 7 at the downtown ballpark.
In the Majors, the Tampa Bay Rays pounded Roy Halladay and the Toronto Blue Jays 12-7 at Rogers Centre last night as Halladay fell to 13-7 on the season. Meanwhile, Miguel Cabrera drove in five runs as the Detroit Tigers beat the Los Angeles Angels 10-7 in Anaheim. With Chicago’s 12-8 loss to Wild Card-leading Boston, the Tigers are now 3 ½ games ahead of the White Sox in the AL Central.
And finally, in the NFL, lots going on yesterday. The San Diego Chargers gave quarterback Phillip Rivers a six-year contract extension worth $92 million; San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary has named Shaun Hill his No. 1 quarterback ahead of Alex Smith; veteran runningback Edgerrin James signed a one-year, $2 million contract with Seattle; next Monday, when the Vikings face Houston, Brett Favre will play the entire first half; this Thursday, when Philadelphia faces Jacksonville, Michael Vick will make his debut with the Eagles; and last night, the Baltimore ravens used a couple of interceptions to beat New York Jets 24-23.

This week, the final week of the mid-season bye weeks, the CFL has scheduled Calgary in Toronto and Hamilton at Edmonton.
These are two huge games for the Bombers. If the two Alberta teams win, Winnipeg is suddenly in the race for second place in the East. And at 3-5, they are also a better team than they were at this time last year. With some help, the Blue Bombers can start thinking playoffs in September.

On Saturday night, Kyle Busch won at Bristol for the second time in 2009 and with his victory, he pulled to within 34 points of the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
Busch now has four wins this season and two races to get into the Chase. It would be a shame if a driver of Kyle Busch’s talent missed the playoffs.

It’s difficult not to be impressed with Fred Ried’s monster 260-yard game against B.C. on Saturday night, but a performance that was overlooked on the weekend was that of Yvenson Bernard.
The kid who was sent to Winnipeg by Oregon State coach Mike Riley, a former Bombers head coach and Grey Cup winner, rushed for 112 yards, a number that would probably get him offensive player of the week were it not for Reid’s sick 260.

The Winnipeg Goldeyes fell 7-6 to the Schaumburg Flyers in Schaumburg, Ill., yesterday afternoon. The Goldeyes lost three-of four on the road trip and have lost seven of their last eight games. However, with Kansas City’s 9-7 loss to Joliet yesterday, Winnipeg can finish no worse than third. The Fish will wrap up the season at home, opening a seven-game homestand tonight at Canwest Park at 7 o’clock against the Joliet JackHammers.
The big story in the CFL this weekend was, of course, Fred Reid, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers gifted runningback who set the Bombers single-game rushing record with 260 yards on 26 carries on Friday night. Reid also scored two touchdowns as the Bombers drilled the B.C. Lions 37-10 to improve to 3-5 on the season and head into the bye week on a bit of a high. Week 9 in the CFL begins Friday night with Calgary at Toronto. Saturday night, Hamilton plays at Edmonton. Both games are on TSN.
In the Majors, the New York Yankees hit five home runs – Derek Jeter hit the first pitch of the game the opposite way for a homer – as the Yanks whipped the Boston Red Sox 8-4 at Fenway and in Toronto, rookie Ricky Romero got his 11th win of the year as the Jays beat the Angels 8-3. In the National League, Albert Pujols hit his 40th homer run of the year as St. Louis beat San Diego 5-2, Phillies second baseman Eric Bruntlett became the second player in big league history to turn an unassisted triple play to end a game as the Phillies beat the Mets 9-7 and Colorado beat San Francisco 4-2 to take a three-game lead in the NL Wild Card race.
And finally, the signing of Brett Favre has meant this to the Minnesota Vikings: More than 4,000 season tickets sold, more than 16,000 individual tickets sold and the sale of more than 6,500 Brett Favre jerseys in the first weekend since Favre’s arrival.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers learned something in the second half of their game against Calgary two weeks ago. They learned they might just have the best running game in the CFL. What they didn’t learn was how to trigger that running game.
Last Friday night in Vancouver, the Bombers realized that if Michael Bishop is hitting his receivers early in the first quarter, the running game will take care of itself. Unlike most successful offences, the Bombers need to use the pass to set up the run. It’s odd, but it works.

Kyle Busch held off pole sitter Mark Martin to pick up his fourth victory of the Sprint Cup season at Bristol on Saturday night.
Busch won Wednesday’s night’s Nationwide Series race at Bristol so with Saturday’s victory, Busch swept both races at the ½-mile bumper-car track. The victory also moved Busch, who hadn’t won in 13 Sprint Cup events, into 13th in the standings.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers running back Fred Reid had quite a night on Friday as he led the Bombers to a 37-10 victory over the B.C. Lions. Reid, who leads the CFL in rushing with 795 yards broke Blaise Bryant’s mark of 249 rushing yards in a single game. Reid rushed for 260 yards on 26 carries, while scoring two touchdowns.
Overall, the Bombers had 393 yards rushing, which is third all-time in team history in a single game.

Friday, August 21st, 2009
Friday, August 21, 2009
Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
To say it is a huge night for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers is probably a bit of an understatement. Week 8 in the CFL begins and ends with a doubleheader tonight on TSN’s Friday Night Football. At 6:30, it’s 4-3 Saskatchewan at 6-1 Montreal and then at 9:30, it’s 2-5 Winnipeg at 3-4 B.C. The Bombers need a win for a lot of reasons, and the fact they don’t play again until Sept. 6 in Saskatchewan is definitely one of them.
Tonight in the NFL, Brett Favre is expected to play about a quarter for the Minnesota Vikings as the Vikings play their second pre-season game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The 92-CITI Sports Machine will be at the Metrodome tonight and will have reports on Monday.
Last night on the NFL pre-season slate, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady proved he could take a few hits on his rebuilt knee and, of all people, wide receiver Chad Ocho Cinco of the Bengals kicked the winning point-after as Cincinnati beat New England 7-6. And Peyton Manning threw two touchdown passes as Indianapolis beat Philadelphia 23-15.
Meanwhile, former New York Giants all-pro wideout Plaxico Burress will spend two years in prison after being convicted on weapons charges in New York yesterday. As you might recall, Burress had an unlicensed gun on his person when he shot himself in a New York Nite Club two years ago.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes are definitely in a slump. Last night the Fish lost their fifth straight, this time 13-3 in Schaumburg. Game 2 of that four-game series goes tonight in Illinois
In the Majors, Boston blasted Toronto 8-1 while Texas drilled Minnesota 11-1 so the Red Sox continue to lead the American League wild card hunt by one full game. This weekend, the New York Yankees, with a 6 ½ game lead over Boston head into Fenway for three. In the National League wild card race, Colorado now leads San Francisco by two full games.
And finally, K.K. the video of that fight on Monday night at Canwest Park, the one featuring Fargo manager Doug Simunic and Winnipeg coach Tom Vaeth. It was on Keith Olbermann’s Countdown on MSNBC last night.

We’re in the middle of the bye weeks in the CFL. This past weekend, Saskatchewan played at Montreal and Winnipeg journeyed to B.C.
This week, Calgary plays at Toronto on Friday while Hamilton is at Edmonton on Saturday. One senses that Winnipeg and Saskatchewan could use the rest this week. Starting Labour Day Sunday, the Riders and Bombers play the first of back-to-back games. Or back-to-back wars.

Week 8 in the CFL begins and ends with a doubleheader tomorrow night as the two bye weeks begin. Friday at 6:30, it’s Saskatchewan at Montreal and then at 9:30, it’s Winnipeg at B.C. Both games are on Friday Night Football on TSN. There is a chance Sideeq Shabazz will move from linebacker to safety. I didn’t think the defence was the problem?
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks swept the Winnipeg Goldeyes right out of Canwest Park with an 8-4 win over the Fish yesterday. The Goldeyes have clinched a playoff spot but are now in third place. The Goldeyes will open a four-game series in Schaumburg tonight.
In the Majors, Canadian Jason Bay homered as the Boston Red Sox beat Roy Halladay and the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1 at Rogers Centre last night. Meanwhile, Minnesota beat Texas 5-4 so the Red Sox have taken a one-game lead in the AL wild card race.
Since signing Brett Favre on Tuesday, the Minnesota Vikings have sold more than 3,000 season tickets and 12,000 individual game tickets. In the meantime, it’s likely former starting QB Tarvaris Jackson will be traded or released by the Vikings by tomorrow. The 92-CITI Sports Machine will be at the Metrodome tomorrow night for Favre’s first game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
And finally, K.K., I love this story, the Nippon Ham Fighters play in the Japanese Major Baseball League. The entire team has been quarantined because three of the players – on the Nippon Ham Fighters – were diagnosed with Swine Flu.

I was speaking at the Blue Bomber Alumni Golf Tournament on Wednesday night and everyone – to a man – complained about the same thing. The Bombers need a quarterback.
I still believe the offensive line needs a makeover, but the guys who played the game all agree, until the Bombers find a quality quarterback, they will not be a contender. Tonight, Michael Bishop will get another chance to prove he’s that guy.

Bristol is a half-mile bumper-car track where there will be plenty of smash-ups and lots of fender-benders and a place where the best driver that day will win. The Sharpie 500 will go Saturday evening at 5:30 on TSN.
The Reports for Wednesday, August 19, 2009: Favre Signs With the Vikings
Wednesday, August 19th, 2009
Tuesday, August 18, 2009
Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
Yesterday, the Minnesota Vikings made official what we’ve been saying will happen since training camp began. The Vikings signed Brett Favre to a two-year, $25 million deal and did it so quickly, he ended up at practice yesterday. It’s very likely he’ll start on Friday night when the Vikes face the Kansas City Chiefs at the Metrodome in their second pre-season game of 2009.
Week 8 in the CFL begins and ends with a doubleheader on Friday night as the two bye weeks begin. Friday at 6:30, it’s Saskatchewan at Montreal and then at 9:30, it’s Winnipeg at B.C. On one day, the Winnipeg Goldeyes dropped from first to third in the Northern League. The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks swept a doubleheader from the Goldeyes yesterday, scoring seven runs in the seventh inning of Game 1 to win 7-5 and then coming back in Game 2 and whipping Winnipeg 11-0. The two teams wrap up their four game series today at 12 Noon at Canwest Park.
In the Majors, the Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-9 while the Minnesota Twins whipped the Texas Rangers 9-6, so the Red Sox and Rangers are now tied atop the American League Wild Card race. In the National League, Colorado beat Washington 4-3 while San Francisco knocked off Cincinnati 8-5 so the Rockies still lead the NL Wild Card race by one game.
And the Texas Rangers re-acquired the greatest catcher in their history, 37-year-old Pudge Rodriguez, from the Houston Astros for a pair of minor leaguers. Pudge will be the starter with regular catcher Jarred Saltalamacchia now on the DL.

So now that we’re heading into the bye weeks –weeks 8 and 9 – let’s look closely at the CFL standings. See any surprises?
Certainly, Hamilton at 4-3 and Edmonton tied with Saskatchewan for the lead in the West at 4-3 are probably the biggest. Calgary and B.C. at 3-4 have both been surprisingly bad. And what about the Bombers? At 2-5 and last in the East, did you really think they’d be any better?

Win a big race on Sunday, sign a brand new contract three days later. The Red Bull Racing Team has signed last week’s surprise winner at Michigan, Brian Vickers, to a multiyear contract extension.
It’s worth a lot more money and gives the 25-year-old Vickers plenty of security. He will continue to drive the No. 83 Toyota under the leadership of crew chief Ryan Pemberton.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks whipped the banged-up Winnipeg Goldeyes 13-4 at Canwest Park last night. It was supposed to be 92-CITI-FM’s celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Woodstock but there wasn’t a lot of peace and love. After Fargo starter Garry Bakker threw one pitch over Kevin West’s head and then, later hit West in the face with a pitch, a fight broke out between Fargo manager Doug Simunic and Goldeyes third base coach Tom Vaeth. There will be some changes today as the Goldeyes put together their final roster for the playoffs.
In the Majors, the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 in a battle of National League divisional leaders while the Texas Rangers beat the Minnesota Twins 8-5 to take a one game lead over idle Boston in the AL Wild Card race.

Both games are on Friday Night Football on TSN. The Bombers will likely be without wide receiver Terrence Edwards. He has turf toe. Yesterday, the Bombers released once highly-regarded Lavarus Giles from their practice roster.
In the NFL, there were two pre-season games last night, but that was hardly the news. As we reported right here after the opening of Minnesota Vikings training camp, it looks as if Brett Favre could be arriving in Minnesota by the time the NFL season starts. FoxSports.com reported yesterday exactly what we reported on Aug. 4; that Favre will play for the Vikings when training camp ends.
Finally, the Manitoba Moose have another Manitoban. The Moose announced yesterday they had signed 34-year-old former NHLer Marty Murray of Deloraine.

Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo, entered the debate over U.S. health care reform on Tuesday, simply by recalling his faith during his wife’s valiant and successful effort to beat non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
During an interview for ChristianWeek magazine, Calvillo was asked about his desire to move back to his hometown of L.A. and said it was something he’d thought about “after football,” but then said he worried about health care. His wife has a pre-existing condition and can’t get insurance. Calvillo said it was likely he’ll retire in Montreal simply because of Canada’s health care system.
