Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
The British Open has started at Turnberry, Scotland. Right now, Tom Watson, that’s right Tom Watson, leads at 5 under.
Here at home, the Players Cup, Canadian Tour event, also begins today at Pine Ridge.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes snapped out of it last night. The Fish put an end to a seven-game losing streak with a 22-4 shellacking of the Schaumburg Flyers. That’s called “taking out one’s frustrations.” The Gold eyes set a franchise record with 27 hits in last night’s game. Juan Diaz had five of them. Cory Patton, Brent Metheny and Cody Ehlers each had four. The 29-20 first place Goldeyes will play the final game of this four-game series tonight in Schaumburg, Ill. They’ll open a four-game series in Fargo tomorrow night.
In the Majors, the all-star break is over. Most teams return to action tonight. The Jays, however, resume the season tomorrow against the Red Sox at Rogers Centre.
In hockey news, the 2009-2010 NHL schedule has been released. The season opens on Oct. 1st with four games. Because of the all-star break, the Vancouver Canucks will have to play 14 straight road games. The New Year’s Day Outdoors Game will be the Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway Park in Boston.
Finally, Week 3 in the CFL begins tonight with 0-2 B.C. at 1-1 Edmonton. The 1-1 Winnipeg Blue Bombers will return to action Saturday at 5 p.m. on TSN, against the 1-1 Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Don’t forget to listen to the Blue Bomber report this afternoon with Cosmo, brought to you by Western Paint.
7:15 CFL REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
Tomorrow afternoon it’s the Winnipeg Blue Bombers against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Ivor Wynne Stadium in a game of unlikely 1-1 teams. In fact, very few people thought the Ticats and Bombers would have a victory between after the first two games of the season, but in fairness, both teams have played much better than expected.
Game time tomorrow is 5 p.m. The Tiger-Cats are 1-point favorites.
8:15 NASCAR REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM NASCAR REPORT. Brought to you by 3M Automotive and Rondex. At 177 Isabel, Rondex is celebrating 37 years of auto body supply service.
There is one thing we haven’t talked about this week and that’s pretty obvious: A race. That’s because this is a week off for the Sprint Cup boys.
That’s right, the Sprint Cup is on hiatus until next Sunday at Noon when the teams get together at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the All-State Brickyard 400. There are only seven more races before the start of the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
4:00 PM RED RIVER CO-OP SPEEDWAY REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM RED RIVER CO-OP SPEEDWAY REPORT. Brought to you by Red River Co-Op Speedway. The fastest sport on the Prairies!
If the weather holds hope, chances are pretty good that we’ll have a Super Stock Special tonight at Red River Co-Op Speedway.
The weather has been lousy this week and the track is pretty wet, but if there is no rain today, we’ll be racing tonight. With the Super Trucks, Street Stocks and Modifieds, this should be a great night of racing just south of the city on Hwy 75.
4:50 PM BLUE BOMBERS REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS REPORT. Brought to you by Western Paint and Wallcovering. 521 Hargrave Street and 1510 St. Mary’s Road.
Yesterday, Blue Bombers president Lyle Bauer made the following statement regarding a “scout” named Ron Trentini.
And we quote: “In regards to the reported incident in Hamilton it should be noted that the football club did not engage the services of this individual who attended an open practice … nor do we condone any such actions. Although we have used the services of this individual in the past it has been in the area of personnel scouting. We believe that our efforts are best spent in the areas of coaching and film study.” And there’s the rub. The Bombers can just watch the Hamilton DVD from B.C. What more do they need?

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
It might be time to shake things up and make a few changes in Goldeyes-land. Although the Goldeyes are still in first place The first-place, they’ve now lost seven straight games, have fallen to 28-20 and are only two games ahead of second place Gary after the Schaumburg Flyers beat Winnipeg 8-7 last night in Schaumburg. Game three of this four-game series goes tonight in Schaumburg, Ill.
Last night in St. Louis, Baltimore’s Adam Jones drove home Curtis Granderson with the winning run in the eighth as the American League beat the National League 4-3 to win the 2009 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. Tampa’s Carl Crawford was named MVP. The American League has not lost an all-star game since 1996. Roy Halladay, who had his first all-star start and was touched for all three NL runs, says he will no longer talk about any potential trade away from Toronto. The Jays resume the season Friday against the Red Sox at Rogers Centre.
In golf, the British Open starts tomorrow at Turnberry while here at home, the Players Cup, Canadian Tour event, also begins tomorrow at Pine Ridge.
In hockey news, the son of the legendary Scotty Bowman, Stan Bowman, has replaced Dale Tallon as general manager of the Chicago Blackhawks. Tallon, fired as GM yesterday, will remain with the club as a special advisor to the president. And today, the 2009-2010 NHL schedule will be released today. The New Year’s Day Outdoors Game will be played at Fenway Park in Boston.
Finally, the 1-1 Winnipeg Blue Bombers will return to action Saturday at 5 p.m. on TSN, against the 1-1 Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Don’t forget to listen to the Blue Bomber report this afternoon with Cosmo, brought to you by Western Paint.
Yesterday, Winnipeg scout Ron Trentini, a Hamilton resident, was booted out of Ivor Wynne Stadium for taking notes during the Ticats practice. He also had his press box credentials in Hamilton revoked. Sure, he was heartbroken.
7:15 CFL REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
Linebacker Otis Floyd, a newcomer to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, said yesterday that Friday’s 31-28 victory over his former team, the B. C. Lions, could mark THE change in the fortunes of the 1-1 Ti-Cats.
“It could be a turning point if we don’t let it get to our heads,” Floyd told The Hamilton Spectator. It shouldn’t. The Ti-Cats haven’t had a winning season since going 9-8-1 in ‘04.
8:15 NASCAR REPORT

NASCAR announced on Tuesday that Martin Truex Jr., driver of the No. 1 Chevy in the Sprint Cup Series, crew chief Kevin Manion and car owner Teresa Earnhardt have all been fined for rule violations during last Saturday’s Lifelock 400.
Truex was penalized 25 points in the drivers’ standings. Manion was fined $25,000 and placed on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31 and Earnhardt was penalized 25 points in the owners’ standings, all for messing with the height of the right quarter final.
Officially, this week’s event is being billed as a Super Stock Special, but it was originally going to be billed as a Super Truck Special. No reason for the change, but it is a change nonetheless.
However, don’t worry, there will be Super Trucks and Modifieds and Street Stocks. Tomorrow night, all tickets from last Thursday night’s rainout will be honoured.
Anybody who was at the football game at Canad Inns Stadium on Friday night knows how great a game Sideeq Shabazz had for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Shabazz delivered a number of huge hits and a 36-yard interception return for a touchdown. The Bomber linebacker had six tackles to go along with his interception in helping the Bombers whip Calgary 42-30. No wonder he was named defensive player of the week.
The Reports for Tuesday, July 14, 2009: It’s All-Star Night. Fielder Wins Home Run Derby
Tuesday, July 14th, 2009
Tuesday, July 14, 2009
Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
The first-place Winnipeg Goldeyes have now lost six straight games, have fallen to 28-19 but are still three games ahead of second place Gary after the Schaumburg Flyers drilled Winnipeg 10-1 last night in Schaumburg. Game two of this four-game series goes tonight in Schaumburg, Ill.
Last night in Srt. Louis, Milwaukee slugger Prince Fielder won the Home Run Derby. Tonight it’s the 2009 All-Star game at the new Busch Stadium. Roy Halladay of the Jays will start for the American League while Tim Lincecum of the San Francisco Giants will get the call for the National League. 7 p.m. on Rogers SportsNet
The British Open starts Thursday at Turnberry while here at home, the Players Cup, Canadian Tour event, also begins Thursday at Pine Ridge.
In hockey news, Scott Arniel has cut a new deal with the Vancouver Canucks and will be back at the helm of the Manitoba Moose next season. And the New Jersey Devils have brought back Jacques Lemaire as their new/old head coach.
Finally, Week 3 in the Canadian Football League begins Thursday night with 0-2 B.C. at 1-1 Edmonton. On Friday, 1-1 Toronto is at 0-2 Calgary at 8 p.m. on TSN’s Friday Night Football. On Saturday 2-0 Montreal is at 2-0 Saskatchewan while 1-1 Winnipeg plays at 1-1 Hamilton. The Bombers have apparently lost wideout Arjei Franklin, who suffered a knee injury in Friday night’s win over Calgary and could be gone for as along as six weeks. Meanwhile, on the bright side, nose tackle Doug Brown and defensive end Riall Johnson have returned to the practice field.
7:15 CFL REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will be without wideout Arjei Franklin for the next six weeks after suffering an ankle injury in the Bombers 42-30 win over Calgary on Friday.
A year ago, that might have been a disastrous loss, but with Brock Ralph on the roster, the Bombers have a talented, veteran non-import receiver to fill the hole. Credit Mike Kelly and John Murphy for that situation.
With a huge win on Saturday night at Chicagoland, Mark Martin moved into 11th place in the standings — and a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
He’s still 588 points out of first but he’s also 11 points ahead of Greg Biffle who now sits 13th. Tony Stewart is clearly the leader and Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson are hot on his tail, but 50-year-old Mark Martin has now made his presence known
I’m starting to get tired of our summer weather. Last week, the rain pounded Red River Co-Op Speedway once again and Thursday night’s Super Truck Special was rained out.
Well, the long-term forecast says rain for this Thursday. If that happens, the rainout date will be Friday so buy your tickets now. Here’s hoping, that the rain holds off and gates will open at 6:30 and racing will start at 7:30.
If Mike Kelly feels a little full of himself these days, there is good reason for it. Despite, numerous misunderstandings, and some not- necessarily-correct versions of events, Kelly has done what he set out to do. He has changed the culture of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
The Bombers might not be a Grey Cup championship team this year, but already, they are much closer to it than they were a year ago today. With some tremendous off-season moves, Kelly has made the Bombers a team that runs harder, pursues harder and hits harder than it has in almost a decade. Mike Kelly has every right to feel good about his football team.
The Reports for Monday, July 13, 2009: Goldeyes Lose Fifth Straight Game
Monday, July 13th, 2009
Monday, July 13, 2009
Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
The first-place Winnipeg Goldeyes have now lost five straight games, have fallen to 28-18 and are now only three games ahead of second place Gary after the RailCats drilled Winnipeg 16-4 at Canwest Park yesterday to complete a three-game sweep of the Fish. Winnipeg will open a four-game series in Schaumburg tonight. The Gold eyes are, officially, in a slump.
The Toronto Blue Jays were beaten 4-2 by the Baltimore Orioles yesterday afternoon. The Jays head into the all-star break with a record of 44-46, 11 games back of first-place Boston in the AL East. The midsummer classic goes tomorrow night in St. Louis. Roy Halladay of the Jays is expected to be the American League starter, Tim Lincecum of the Giants will start for the National League and with 2008 MVP Dustin Pedroia out of the game to be with his pregnant wife, Toronto’s Aaron Hill will start for the AL at second base.
Dario Franchitti won the Toronto Honda Indy yesterday. Steve Stricker won the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic with a final round 64. That’s the final Tour event before this week’s British Open at Turnberry. And 23-year-old Amanda Rodriguez, the wife of Canadian boxer Arturo (Thunder) Gatti, who was found dead at a seaside resort in Brazil on Saturday, has been charged with the fighter’s murder.
How ‘bout those Bombers, 42-30 winners in front of a sellout crowd here in Winnipeg on Friday night? K.K., wonder if our pal Mike Kelly felt a little more love this weekend…
7:15 CFL REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
If the Calgary Stampeders don’t snap out of it, one wonders how long it will take before real change occurs in Cowtown? Henry Burris has not looked good this year and while he’s lost to Montreal at home and Winnipeg on the road, head coach John Hufnagel has to be worried about his quarterback. After all, backup QB Barrick Nealy put the final two touchdowns on the board on Friday night.
By the way, who thought Stefan Lefors would be 1-1 while Henry Burris was 0-2? Be honest now.
What more can you say about the great Mark Martin? On Saturday night at Chicagoland Speedway, the 50-year-old NASCAR legend won his fourth race of the season, guiding his No. 5 Kellogg’s Chevy to victory in the Lifelock 400.
Martin led a record 195 laps and held off Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon at the finish as Martin came within one victory of Harry Gant’s 1991 record of five by a driver 50 or older.
So last week, the rain pounded Red River Co-Op Speedway once again and anyone who doesn’t think there is climate change going on, hasn’t been outdoors in Manitoba this summer.
Hopefully we can get back at it this on Thursday night as once again the Super Trucks will be the featured event. But don’t worry, there will be Super Stocks, Modifieds and Street Stocks. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster. Gates open at 6:30, racing starts at 7:30.
This past week, Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Mike Kelly was called “a public relations nightmare,” by the Winnipeg Sun.
Gotta love them newspapers. Just write bollocks and see what sticks to the wall. Of course, are that many people reading anymore? The sellout crowd at Canad Inns Stadium on Friday would suggest that about 30,000 Winnipeggers don’t care what’s in the papers these days. Public relations nightmare? Hardly. Mike Kelly is the best thing that’s happened to the Bombers in two decades.
The Reports for Friday, July 10, 2009: Big Sports Night in Winnipeg: Both Bombers and Goldeyes Live Tonight
Friday, July 10th, 2009
Friday, July 10, 2009
Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
Week 2 opened in the CFL last night and talk about a one-sided affair. The Montreal Alouettes scored 31 unanswered points early in the fourth quarter and absolutely demolished the Edmonton Eskimos 50-16. Als QB Anthony Calvillo threw for two touchdowns and ran for another while the final Als touchdown was scored on an interception return by Winnipegger Cory Huclack.
Tonight, two games on the slate including the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 2009 season opener against the defending Grey Cup champion Calgary Stampeders. It’s a 6:30 start time on TSN HD. Both teams are 0-1 so this is a big early-season matchup. Nose tackle Doug Brown and linebacker Joe Lobendahn are both listed in their familiar No. 1 spots on Winnipeg’s depth chart for tonight’s game. Still, Calgary is a 5 ½-point favourite.
The 28-15 first-place Winnipeg Goldeyes will open a three-game set with the Gary SouthShore-RailCats tonight, right here at Canwest Park. Game time is 7 o’clock and if you can’t get down to the park it will be available on Shaw Channel 9.
Roy Halladay lost a rare one yesterday. Tampa Bay swept the three-game series with Toronto, thanks to a 3-2 rays win in Tampa yesterday afternoon. The 43-44 Jays will open a three-game series in Baltimore tonight, 6:05 on Rogers Sportsnet
More big free agent signings in the NHL yesterday. The New York Rangers signed forward Ales Kotalik away from Edmonton, three years, $9 million; the Tampa Bay Lightning got skilled defenseman Kurtis Foster from Minnesota, one year $2.5 million and the San Jose Sharks re-signed defenceman Rob Blake.
In the NBA yesterday, there was a huge, yet convoluted, four-team, seven-player trade that ultimately meant the Turkish Delight, Hedo Turkoglu is now a member of the Toronto Raptors.
And finally, congratulations to the Manitoba Moose, winners of the American Hockey League’s President’s Award for the 2008-2009 season, an award which recognizes excellence off the ice.
7:15 CFL REPORT
Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
Say what you will about Week 2 in the CFL, but one thing was driven home with a flourish. The Montreal Alouettes have a damn good football team.
The Als absolutely demolished the Edmonton Eskimos 50-16 in Montreal this past week and they did it in every way possible – offence, defence and special teams all scored. It was a complete romp and Marc Trestman’s football team made the first true statement of the 2009 season. That was a butt-kicking.
For those wondering why Dale Earnhardt Jr. hasn’t lived up to his fans lofty expectations, here’s an answer his former crew chief, Tony Eury.
In an interview with NASCAR. Com, Eury said, “I think a lot of people put Junior on a pedestal that he doesn’t need to be on. They put a lot of pressure on him to be somebody he’s not going to be. Dale Jr. is a great race car driver, but I just think he’s got so much pressure on him that he doesn’t enjoy it right now.” That about sums it up.
I’ll admit, I’m a truck kind of guy and last night was the first night of two straight weeks of Truck Specials at Red River Co-Op Speedway. But if you missed last night’s action, don’t worry, the speedway is going to do it all again next week.
Next Thursday night at 7:30, the Super Trucks will again be the featured event along with Super Stocks, Modifieds and Street Stocks. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster. If you missed last night’s action, be sure not to miss the Super Trucks next week.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
Tomorrow night, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will play their 2009 home opener against the defending Grey Cup champion Calgary Stampeders. It’s a 6:30 start time on TSN HD. Both teams are 0-1 so this is a big early-season matchup. It’s unlikely nose tackle Doug Brown or linebacker Joe Lobendahn will play in the game for Winnipeg. Calgary is a 5 ½-point favourite. Yesterday, the Bombers added wide receiver Scott Mitchell to the practice roster. Mitchell caught 38 passes for Hamilton last year. The Bombers also made it official and released wideout Derick Armstrong.
Tonight, Week 2 in the CFL begins with Edmonton in Montreal 6:30 p.m. on TSN
On the day the Toronto Blue Jays released former closer B.J. Ryan, the Jays bullpen couldn’t get it done as Ben Zobrist singled home Carl Crawford with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Jays 10-9. This afternoon 10-2 Roy Halladay will get the start as the 43-43 Jays, play Game 3 of this three-game series in Tampa.
The 28-15 first-place Winnipeg Goldeyes’ will open a three-game set with the Gary SouthShore-RailCats tomorrow night, right here at Canwest Park. Game time is 7 o’clock and if you can’t get down to the park it will be avialble on Shaw Channel 9.
More big free agent signings in the NHL yesterday. The Anaheim Ducks signed former Montreal Canadiens captain Saku Koivu to a one-year $3.25 million deal and he Chicago Blackhawks gave restricted free agent Kris Versteeg a two-year extension worth $4.5 million. And Joe Sakic will make it official today. After 20 years in the NHL, the 40-year-old Sakic will announce his retirement.

Tonight, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will play their 2009 home opener against the defending Grey Cup champion Calgary Stampeders.
Both teams are 0-1 so this is a big early-season matchup. And unfortunately for Winnipeg, it’s unlikely nose tackle Doug Brown or linebacker Joe Lobendahn will play. Not surprisingly, then, Calgary is a 5 ½-point favourite.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
Toronto Blue Jays general manager J. P. Ricciardi says he’s not actively trying to trade his ace righthander Roy Halladay, but he would listen to serious offers for the pitcher as the trade deadline approaches. The Jays owe Halladay $30 million this year and next. Last night, the Jays lost 3-1 to Tampa on Pat Burrell’s two-run homer in the 11th. Tonight, the 43-42 Jays play Game 2 of this three-game series in Tampa, 6:08 on TSN.
The 28-15 first-place Winnipeg Goldeyes’ will open a three-game with the Gary SouthShore-RailCats on riday, right here at Canwest Park. Last night, in Joliet, the Northern All-Stars battled to a 5-5, 10-inning tie in Joliet. Winnipeg’s Juan Diaz, drovein a run for the Great Plains All-Stars.
Not many big free agent signings in the NHL yesterday, but there was news. First, Chris Pronger signed a seven year $35 million contract extension in Philadelphia and then word leaked out of Denver that the great Joe Sakic, who turned 40 yesterday, will announce his retirement tomorrow after 20 seasons and 1,378 games in the NHL.
Meanwhile, the Manitoba Moose have a new alignment in the American Hockey League’s North Division. And finally, It’s no longer a question of whether or not Brett Favre will sign with the Minnesota Vikings, it’s when. In fact, our sources in Minneapolis tell us that Favre will announce his signing and become the new quarterback of the Vikings on or before July 20.

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM Canadian Football League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.
Tonight, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will play host to the defending Grey Cup champion Calgary Stampeders in a very important game for both teams.
Both teams are 0-1 and both teams need to show their fans that they’re ready for the long 18-game schedule. The last thing the Bombers need is to go 0-2 with only two of their next six games at home. Tonight’s 6:30 start could be the most important outing of the first half the 2009 season.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
More free agent signings in the NHL yesterday and the Chicago Blackhawks made Winnipeg’s Came Barker a very wealthy young man. Barker, a restricted free agent, signed a three-year $9.25 million extension with the Hawks. In other signings, the Ottawa Senators signed Alexei Kovalev to a two-year deal worth $10 million, the Toronto Maple Leafs signed defenseman Francois Beauchemin two a three-year $11.4 million contract, and Vancouver got tough guy Shane O’Brien under contract, one-year, $1.6 million.
Meanwhile, the Toronto Maple Leafs are under investigation for tampering. Evidently, head coach Ron Wilson told a Toronto radio audience that the Leafs had an interest in the Sedin Twins before free-agent day on July 1. Gee, was that the league’s first clue?
The 28-15 first-place Winnipeg Goldeyes’ will have nine players in tonight’s Northern League all-star game in Joliet, Ill., including this week’s player of the week Dee Brown. The Goldeyes season resumes Friday night at Canwest Park when the Gary SouthShore-RailCats come to town.
Scott Rolen extended his hitting streak to 23 games and the Toronto Blue Jays put a halt to a three-game losing streak with a 7-6 win over the New York Yankees yesterday afternoon. Tonight, the 43-41 Jays open a huge three-game set in Tampa. 6:08 on TSN.
And finally, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers play their 2009 home opener on Friday night against the defending Greay Cup champion Calgary Stampeders and they’ll likely be without 1,000-yard wide-receiver Derick Armstrong. Armstrong and head coach Mike Kelly argued vehemently on the weekend over, among other things, Armstrong’s refusal to play in Edmonton last Thursday night. Armstrong’s locker has been cleaned out and he’s being shopped around to other teams.
7:15 CFL REPORT

It’s Week 2 in the Canadian Football League and the action starts tomorrow night with a pair of unbeaten teams, the 1-0 Edmonton Eskimos in Montreal to face the 1-0 Alouettes.
On Friday, 0-1 Calgary plays in Winnipeg against the 0-1 Blue Bombers and 0-1 Hamilton faces 0-1 B.C. On Saturday, 1-0 Saskatchewan heads to Toronto to meet the 1-0 Argos. It’s probably unlikely, but by the end of the weekend, four CFL teams could be 2-0 and four could be 0-2.
NASCAR really has a mess on its hands. And they can blame it on drug testing.
NASCAR now wants a federal judge to reverse his own ruling that lifted the ban on driver Jeremy Mayfield and will allow him to compete. After weeks of speculation, NASCAR claimed Mayfield tested positive for methamphetamines, but the judge said the chance of a false positive was quote “quite substantial.” It’s partly Mayfield’s fault, Anyone who would turn over their fluids to these phony drug testing labs, is taking an overwhelming chance.

The Reports for Monday, July 6, 2009: Woods, Federer Big Winners
Monday, July 6th, 2009
Monday, July 6, 2009
Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
Two of the world’s greatest athletes rose to the occasion yesterday: (It was quite a day for Nike and Gillette yesterday. Their two most prominent spokesmen were both big winners.) At Wimbledon, Roger Federer defeated Andy Roddick, in a marathon, 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14 to win his record fifth Grand Slam title and the sixth Wimbledon championship of his career. Meanwhile, Tiger Woods, made birdie at 16 to go 13-under and win his own tournament, the AT&T National at Congressional Country Club outside Washington, D.C. It was his third win of the year, the 68th of his career and moved him to the top of both the money list and the FedEx Cup standings.
The Winnipeg Goldeyes’ bullpen blew its second straight game. Leading 4-3 heading to the bottom of the ninth yesterday, the pen allowed two runs as Gary beat Winnipeg 5-4. The Goldeyes are now 28-15 at the all-star break, seven games ahead of Gary, Fargo and Kansas City who are all tied for second. The all-star game goes tomorrow night in Joliet, nine Goldeyes will take part.
Derek Jeter’s two-run homer was the difference as the New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 10-8 to win their third straight game over the Jays this weekend. Toronto is now 42-41, eight games back of first place Boston in the AL East. The Jays and Yankees go at it today, 12:05 p.m., on Rogers SportsNet.
Yesterday, the Major League all-star teams were announced. Jays Aaron Hill and Roy Halladay are in the game, July 14 in St. Louis, Adam Lind could still be voted in as the 33rd player. Canadians Justin Morneau and dual-citizen Jason Bay were also named to the AL team.
In hockey, the NHL’s free-agent frenzy continues and there were a number of local moves this weekend. Neepawa’s Shane Hnidy signed a one-year, $750,000 deal with the Minnesota Wild; Winnipeg’s Tyler Arnason signed a two-way deal with the New York Rangers; Jason Krog left the Manitoba Moose and signed a two-year deal with the NHL’s Atlanta Thrashers; and of the 20 players who selected salary arbitration, two were Winnipeggers, Nigel Dawes will go to arbitration with Phoenix while Travis Zajac will go to arbitration with New Jersey.
Police say the death of former NFL quarterback Steve McNair was a homicide and they are still investigating.
And finally, it’s Week 2 in the Canadian Football League and it starts on Thursday with Edmonton at Montreal. On Friday, Calgary plays right here in Winnipeg, it’s the 2009 home opener, while Hamilton is at B.C. On Saturday, Saskatchewan plays at Toronto. All four games are, of course, on TSN. Over in Bomberland, wideout Derick Armstrong, who refused to play in last Thursday’s game, did not practice yesterday and was apparently being shopped to other CFL teams.

Jesse Lumsden says he’s coming back. Perhaps, but the real question is, “Why?”
The Edmonton Eskimos tailback said Sunday he expects to be back in the lineup later this year after suffering a dislocated shoulder the first quarter of Edmonton’s season-opening 19-17 win over Winnipeg on Thursday. The injury was to Lumsden’s left shoulder, which has already required surgery twice. Don’t want to say Lumsden is injury prone, but….

Saturday night at Daytona, Tony Stewart won the Coke Zero 400 and wasn’t happy about it. That’s because, on the final lap, with Kyle Busch leading and blocking, Stewart nudged Busch into the wall, passed his opponent and won the race.
The nudge caused a major wreck that left Stewart unhappy about his second win of the season and once again forced NASCAR to take another serious look at restrictor plate racing.
Now that the Sprint Cars have been in an out of Winnipeg – to a full house at the Speedway last Thursday night, by the way – it’s now time to turn our attention to the Trucks.
For the next two Thursdays at Red River Co-Op Speedway, will be Super Truck Specials. And since the Trucks weren’t on the schedule last Thursday, they’re going to get special treatment for the next two Thursdays.
The Reports for Friday, July 3, 2009: Bombers Lose Season Opener 19-17 to Edmonton
Friday, July 3rd, 2009
Friday, July 3, 2009
Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports
Despite the rain and wind, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers made a game of it last night in Edmonton. With a solid defensive effort and a rally in the fourth quarter, the Bombers had a chance to tie on the final play, but Alexis Serna missed a 47-yard field goal and the Bombers fell 19-17 to the Edmonton Eskimos. It was a pretty good first outing for Mike Kelly’s new-look Bombers. There is reason for Winnipeg fans to feel pretty good about this team.
Tonight in the CFL, B.C. plays at Saskatchewan on Friday Night Football, 8 p.m. on TSN.
Yesterday, the CFL fined Arland Bruce an undisclosed amount for that Touchdown celebration on Wednesday night. After he scored on a 21-yard pass from Kerry Joseph, Bruce removed his helmet, shoulder pads and uniform top, and laid down in the end zone. Bruce said he was paying tribute to Michael Jackson. The CFL called it “excessive” and fined him.
In baseball, both the Winnipeg Goldeyes and Toronto Blue Jays had yesterday off. Tonight, the Goldeyes will open a three-game series in Gary while the Jays will open a three-game series at Yankee Stadium, 12 Noon on Rogers SportsNet.
In other major league news, a love fest awaits Manny Ramirez in Los Angeles tonight as Manny returns from his 50-game suspension for using steroids. Ramirez is back tonight as the Dodgers face San Diego at Dodger Stadium.
In golf, Anthony Kim set a course record, eight-under 62 at Congressional Country Club in Washington D.C. to take the first-round lead at the AT&T Invitational. The tournament’s host, Tiger Woods, fired a six-under 64.
In tennis, Venus Williams will meet her baby sister, Serena Williams, in the Wimbledon women’s singles final tomorrow. The men’s semis go today.
In hockey, the NHL’s free-agent frenzy continues unabated and yesterday, there were more moves. Here are the highlights: The Boston Bruins re-signed Mark Recchi, one year, one million; the Atlanta Thrashers signed big Nik Antropov away from the Rangers, four years, $16 million; and the Los Angeles Kings signed Pittsburgh defenseman Rob Scuderi, four years, $13.4 million; and the Vancouver Canucks signed Nolan Baumgartner, and that’s great news for the Manitoba Moose.
And yesterday, Hockey Canada invited 46 players to its 2010 Olympic men’s ice hockey team training camp in Calgary from Aug. 24-27. No big surprises, but Winnipeg’s Jonathan Toews, the captain of the Chicago Blackhawks, is the only Manitoban on the list.

So in the cold light of a new week, how do you feel about your Winnipeg Blue Bombers? The season-opening loss was, indeed, a loss, but there were some bright spots.
The defence was pretty good and the unit played well enough to win despite missing veteran nose tackle Doug Brown. The defensive secondary was better than expected. On the downside, that offence is not what was expected, but then again if the O-line improves, it might be a pretty decent year.

Talk continues that Indy Racing sensation Danica Patrick is going to jump to the bigger money and greater American glory of NASCAR.
Frankly, I don’t think she will, but if she does make the jump, she will not be an immediate Sprint Cup success. In fact, she might be better served to spend a year running the Nationwide Events before moving to the Cop series.
What a night last night at Red River Co-Op Speedway. The Sprint Cars came to town and the crowd was spectacular. However, there were other events:
Wade Nygard won the main event, the ASCS Sprints, while once again the almost unbeatable Ricky Weiss took the Modifieds, Pete Peters won the Street Stocks and Scott Brown snuck past George Balcaen to with the Super Stocks. Next week, it’s Truck Night.
