Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

The first-place Winnipeg Goldeyes got a great start from all-star Ace Walker and another all-star, Dee Brown, had two hits and extended his hitting streak to 20 games, as the Fish beat the Schaumburg Flyers 7-5 in front of 6,500 at Canwest Park last night. The 26-12 Fish play Game 2 of this three-game series with Schaumburg tonight at 7 o’clock at Canwest Park. It’s fireworks night at the ballpark.

The Toronto Blue Jays were beaten again last night, this time 4-1 by the Tampa Bay Rays. Roy Halladay allowed only two runs in six innings of work, but got no help from the offence. Game 2 of this three-game series goes tonight at 6:07 on TSN.

In hockey, Team Canada has announced that Montreal Canadiens Hall of Famer, Jean Beliveau, who never had the chance to represent Canada in international comopetition, has been named honourary captain of Canada’s 2010 Olympic hockey team and tomorrow, free agency begins in the NHL. Now that 19-year-old phenom Joey Logano has won his first race, he has a chance to make it two in a row this Saturday night at Daytona International Speedway.

It’s the Coke Zero 400 and it should be a tremendous weekend. In fact, you can get a ticket to the weekend rock festival and a ticket to the race for just $40. I’m not certain what the airfare will be.

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

The draft is over and congratulations to Manitobans Scott Glennie, Cody Eakin and Byron Froese who were all selected by NHL teams. Glennie went in the first round, eighth overall, to the Dallas Stars.

Now, the craziness starts. Tomorrow, free agency begins and awhole load of players are expected to change teams. It should be fun and be sure to follow all the news right here on 92-CITI-FM. This is our final NHL report of the year. On Thursday, MAACO’s CFL Reports begin — for the next five months.

8:15 NASCAR REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM NASCAR REPORT. Brought to you by 3M Automotive and Rondex. At 177 Isabel, Rondex is celebrating 37 years of auto body supply service.

On Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, 19-year-old Joey Logano became the youngest winner in the history of the NASCAR Cup Series as he drove the No. 20 Home Depot Chevrolet to victory in the Lenox Industrial Tools 301.

Everybody knew Logano was a great young driver but nobody expected the teenager to win this early in his career. We might just be looking at the greatest driver in the history of NASCAR. In fact, he was given his nickname “Sliced Bread,” for a reason.

4:00 PM RED RIVER CO-OP SPEEDWAY REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM RED RIVER CO-OP SPEEDWAY REPORT. Brought to you by Red River Co-Op Speedway. The fastest sport on the Prairies!

However, it was a busy night last Thursday and it’s time for a few shout outs: The great Ricky Weiss won last week’s modified race, Lee McRae took the super trucks, George Balcaen won the Super Stocks, Henry Peters took the Street Stocks and Jennifer Carlson won the Northern Lightning Sprints.

With Stefan LeFors at quarterback and perhaps the best front seven in the CFL on defence, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will play their first game in anger this Thursday night at Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium.

If Mike Kelly’s offensive line holds up, if the defensive secondary can take advantage of the front seven’s rush and if the kicking game is improved, then this Bomber team could be a Grey Cup challenger this season. If those things don’t happen, it could be a long, long year.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

There were no big surprises yesterday as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers made their final cuts before the start of the CFL season next Thursday. The biggest name to be let go was expected, runningback Joe Smith. Veteran offensive linemen Matt O’Meara and Jean Francois Morin-Roberge were released. The release of Canadian offensive linemen is always a bit of a surprise. The Bombers start the season next Thursday in Edmonton.

The first-place 24-11 Winnipeg Goldeyes split a doubleheader in Kansas City yesterday. The T-Bones won Game 1, 9-3 while the Goldeyes got home runs from Jeff DeSmidt, Dee Brown and Cory Patton to came back to win the nightcap 11-9. Tonight, the Fish open a weekend series with Fargo. They’ll honour fan-favourite Brian Duva on another Flashback Friday. 7 o’clock at Canwest Park.

The first round of the 2009 NHL entry draft goes tonight in Montreal. Either Swedish defenseman Victor Hedman or Canadian sniper John Tavares will be the No. 1 pick. Look for Winnipeg’s Scott Glennie of the Brandon Wheat Kings to go in the Top 10 and look for lennie’s linemate Brayden Schenn go No. 3 or 4.

The NBA draft was held last night in New York. The first pick, as expected Oklahoma’s Blake Griffin, went to the Los Angeles Clippers. The Toronto Raptors took 6-foot-7 forward DeMar DeRozan out of USC. The big move of the night came before the first pick. Orlando acquired Vince Carter from the New Jersey Nets.

Pending free agent all-star Marian Gaborik of the Minnesota Wild appears ready to sign with the Vancouver Canucks.

We reported here during the winter that Gaborik wanted to be traded to Vancouver and now that he’s going to be a free agent this Wednesday, it looks like he’ll finally get his wish. In fact, according to my sources on the coast, Gaborik has already purchased a house in West Van.

NASCAR has announced the “NASCAR Green Clean Air” program, a program designed to help capture the carbon emissions produced by racing. Under a pilot program that will be expanded in 2010, NASCAR will plant 10 new trees for each green flag that drops during Sprint Cup events.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

Thanks to rain and lightning in Kansas City, the first-place Winnipeg Goldeyes have a messed up schedule. Last night, there was supposed to be a double header, but Game 1 was suspended after two innings with Kansas City leading 1-0. That game will now be Game 1 of a doubleheader on July 28. The suspended game from Tuesday, a 4-4 tie in the 11th, will now be the first part of a doubleheader on July 29. Today, the T-Bones and Goldeyes will play a doubleheader, weather permitting, beginning at 11:05 this morning.

The Toronto Blue Jays drilled the Cincinnati Reds 8-2 at Rogers Centre last night as Aaron Hill, Vernon Wells and Adam Lind all homered in the first inning. The final game of this three-game series goes tonight at 6:07 on Rogers SportsNet.

In NHL news, 47-year-old Chris Chelios says no hard feelings that the Red Wings released him after 10 years and he wants to play next season. The 25-year NHL veteran becomes a free-agent on July 1 and he says he’ll talk to other teams. Meanwhile, the NHL entry draft starts tomorrow night in Montreal. Look for Winnipeg’s Scott Glennie of the Brandon Wheat Kings to go in the Top 10.

The NBA draft goes tonight. The Raptors pick ninth. In the meantime, the Phoenix Suns have agreed in principle on a deal that will send centre Shaquille O’Neal to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Shaq and LeBron in one town should be dynamic.

Finally, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are just a week away from the start of the season. Cuts are coming today. And look for big movement at the runningback position.

THE REPORTS

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

The NHL draft goes tonight in Montreal and the question is: Will the No. 1 pick be John Tavares or Victor Hedman? The Islanders pick first and here’s what will probably happen. If the Isles don’t trade their pick. Victor Hedman will be selected first.

Now that players become unrestricted free agents after seven years in the league, clubs want their top draft picks to contribute right away. With that in mind, Hedman looks like the best bet. The six-foot-six, 220-pound defenceman played almost 22 minutes a game against men for Modo in the Swedish Elite League last season.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers played a pretty good football game in Montreal last night, losing 31-27 in the final pre-season game of 2009. But the big story was runningback Lavarus Giles. Giles carried 12 times for 161 yards, including a 77-yard touchdown on a draw play. In two pre-season games, Giles carried 26 times for 238 yards and it means Joe Smith and his biog paycheque could be on a plane.

In the other CFL pre-season games last night, Toronto beat Hamilton 27-17 — Kevin Glenn, 6-for-13 for 82 yards for the Ti-Cats — Calgary whipped Saskatchewan 27-19 and Edmonton whipped B.C. 31-19.

The first-place Winnipeg Goldeyes were tied with the Kansas City T-Bones at 4-4 with one out in the top of the 11th when lightning lit up the sky and the game was suspended. Tonight, Kansas City and Winnipeg will play a doubleheader and then tomorrow at 11 in the morning the suspended game will be resumed, followed by another nine-inning ball game. Then the Goldeyes will return to Winnipeg for a Friday night encounter with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.

The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-5 at Rogers Centre last night. With the win combined with the New York Yankees 4-0 loss to Atlanta, the Jays moved into a tie for second in the American League East at 39-33. However, Boston beat Washington 11-3 so the Red Sox remain five games ahead of Toronto and New York. Game 2 of the Jays-Reds series goes tonight at 6:07 on Rogers SportsNet.

In NHL news, the Calgary Flames made it official, they named Brent Sutter their new head coach. And the Hockey Hall of Fame has five new members: Players Steve Yzerman, Luc Robitaille, Brett Hull and Brian Leetch and builder Lou Lamoriello.

THE REPORTS

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

The NHL draft goes Friday night in Montreal and a couple of Brandon Wheat Kings should go early. Yesterday, we told you Winnipeg’s Scott Glennie should go seventh or eighth while Glennie’s linemate Brayden Schenn might go as high as third or fourth.

Look for Toronto to try to trade up from seventh to get Schenn, if they can’t trade up high enough to get top-ranked John Tavares.

Last Sunday’s Toyota/SaveMart 350 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California was the perfect example of why there needs to be a road race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

No. 1, it’s always a close race, No. 2 it’s a true demonstration of driving skill and No. 3, everybody on every team has to play an integral role in each team’s success. Don’t need to have two of them, but one in the Chase would be good for NASCAR.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

29-year-old South Carolinian Lucas Glover won the United States Open Golf Championship yesterday at the extremely difficult Bethpage Black Course on Long Island. He was 4-under. Then, when it ended, the Fish got on the bus and headed for Kansas City where they’ll play a game tonight, two tomorrow and a late-morning game on Thursday before returning to Winnipeg for a Friday night encounter with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.

The Toronto Blue Jays had last night off. Tonight they’ll start a three-game series with the Cincinnati Reds at Rogers Centre. 6:07 on Rogers SportsNet.

In NHL news, the draft goes Friday night in Montreal and a couple of Brandon Wheat Kings should go early. Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

Scott Glennie is a 6-foot-1, 200-pound righthanded shooting centre from Winnipeg, who just might go as high as sixth in this Friday night’s NHL entry draft in Montreal.

The Brandon Wheat Kings sniper helped the Wheaties reach the WHL’s Western Conference final and had 70 points in 55 games this season. He’ll probably wind up back in Brandon next season, but he’ll definitely be a Top 1 pick on Friday.

Ten tracks, 10 exciting weekends of intense, side-by-side competition. That’s the scenario facing Sprint Cup Series teams as the advent of summer coincides with a seasonal mile-marker: the Race to the Chase.

The 2009 edition begins with Sunday’s Lenox Industrial Tools 301 at New Hampshire International Speedway. It’s the first of a 10-event span culminating Sept. 12 at Richmond, when the field will be set for the Chase. In other words, it’s the Race to the Chase.

They’ll play a mock game on the field at Molson Stadium at 1:30 this afternoon and then, tomorrow night, they’ll meet the Alouettes in the final pre-season game of 2009. That one shoul;d tell us something about the new-look Bombers.

In auto racing, Kasey Kahne fought off Tony Stewart to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup’s Toyota/SaveMart 350 road race in Sonoma California.

Finally, Hilary Cheruiyot won the 31st running of the Manitoba Marathon yesterday in a time of two hours, 27 minutes and 29 seconds, but really, congratulations to all 13,900 people who ran in the heat yesterday to support the Manitoba Marathon Foundation.

In a move that is kind of fitting, the Molson family reached an agreement with George Gillett on Saturday to purchase the Montreal Canadiens.

The bid is said to be $550 million and includes 80.1 per cent of the team and 100 per cent of the Bell Centre and Gillett Entertainment Group. The remaining 19.9 per cent is held by Molson Coors. The deal is expected to be finished by August, but the Molson name on the Montreal Canadiens just seems to fit.

It’s still odd to watch NASCAR drivers turn right, but that’s exactly what they had to do at the Toyota/SaveMart 350 road race at Infineon Speedway in Sonoma, Cal., on Sunday.

Kasey Kahne said before the race that this form of competition goes against everything he’s ever been taught as a race car driver. Well, he must have learned something. He fought off a hard-charging Tony Stewart to take the checkered flag.

Scott Taylor’s CITI Sports Reports

Alexander Ovechkin showed up at the NHL Awards last night with two Vegas showgirls on his arm and a fresh $500 in his pocket, winnings from the blackjack table. He then proceeded to win the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player for the second straight year and the Lester B. Pearson Award, as the players’ choice for most outstanding player for the second straight year at the NHL Awards last night in Las Vegas. Boston’s Zdeno Chara won the Norris Trophy as best defenceman, Bostons Tim Thomas won the Vezina Trophy as best goaltender and the Bruins’ Claude Julien won the Adams Trophy as coach of the year. Detroit’s Pavel Datsyuk won both the Selke Trophy as top defensive forward and the Lady Byng Trophy as the most gentlemanly player. And Columbus goalie Steve Mason was named rookie of the year.

In baseball, the Winnipeg Goldeyes were rained out in Fargo last night. The first-place Fish will open a four-game series with Joliet tonight at Canwest Park. First pitch at 7:05.

The Toronto Blue Jays got two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth and came back to beat Philadelphia 8-7 last night. Tonight, the Jays open a weekend series in Washington against the Nationals.

Rain not only delayed the opening round of the U.S. Open, none of the competitors even finished the first round. They’ll try to get the first round done and part of the second round today.

In football, Winnipeg Blue Bombers head coach Mike Kelly confirmed the obvious yesterday. Stefan LeFors is indeed his team’s No. 1 quarterback and will be the No. 1 quarterback on July 2 when the Bombers open the season in Edmonton. Today, Kelly is expected to make about 15 cuts in order to get down to 60 players at camp.

And don’t forget, this Sunday morning, it’s the Manitoba Marathon.

He then proceeded to win the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s most valuable player and the Lester B. Pearson Award, as the players’ choice for most outstanding player at the NHL Awards night in Las Vegas. Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM NASCAR REPORT. Brought to you by 3M Automotive and Rondex. At 177 Isabel, Rondex is celebrating 37 years of auto body supply service.

This weekend, the NASCAR Sprint Cup boys were at Infineon Speedway in Sonoma, Cal., a rare road race, the Toyota/Save Mart 350.

Yesterday’s race brought up an interesting question about the Sprint Cup circuit. Although there are two road races during the regular season, there is not a road race during the Chase for the Sprint Cup. The question is: Should there be?

4:00 PM RED RIVER CO-OP SPEEDWAY REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM RED RIVER CO-OP SPEEDWAY REPORT. Brought to you by Red River Co-Op Speedway. The fastest sport on the Prairies!

After another thrilling Thursday night of racing, an event that went well into the night, the folks at Red River Co-Op Speedway are now gearing up for a night of Street Stocks with a special event.

Next Thursday night, the Lightning Sprints will make a special appearance at Red River Co-Op Speedway and that should pack the best little track in the Upper Midwest.

And don’t forget, if you purchased tickets for any of the first eight race nights this season, nights that were cancelled due to the flood conditions at the speedway, you can redeem them for next Thursday’s special appearance of the Lightning Sprints. It’s a can’t miss night. But hey, aren’t they all?

4:50 PM BLUE BOMBERS REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS REPORT. Brought to you by Western Paint and Wallcovering. 521 Hargrave Street and 1510 St. Mary’s Road.

I’ve had a chance to catch a number of Blue Bombers workouts this spring and guess what? Despite the fears of more than one Bomber fan this off-season, it’s fair to say this looks nothing like the Jeff Reinebold Era.

In fact, if the offensive line jells and the defensive front seven gives the secondary a chance, this might not be a bad football team. Quarterback Stefan LeFors was great in the pre-season opener and the kicking game is still a question mark, but after Wednesday’s win against Hamilton, this looks like it could be a good football team.

THE REPORTS

7:15 NHL REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the Coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM National Hockey League Report. Brought to you by MAACO Collision and Auto Painting at 983 Wall Street.

Red Wings forward Marian Hossa, who just had a dreadful Stanley Cup final, can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1 and told the Detroit News he wants the security of a long-term deal.

Hossa, who turned down a number of long-term offers last summer to sign a one-year, $7.45 million deal with the Wings, says he hopes to re-sign with Detroit. Wonder if the Red Wings feel the same way about him?

8:15 NASCAR REPORT

Hi everybody, it’s the coach Scott Taylor and it’s time now for the 92-CITI-FM NASCAR REPORT. Brought to you by 3M Automotive and Rondex. At 177 Isabel, Rondex is celebrating 37 years of auto body supply service.

Everybody loves California wine country and that’s where the NASCAR Sprint Cup boys are competing this week.
It’s the Toyota/Save Mart 350, one of two road races on the Sprint Cup circuit and it takes place at a track that doesn’t really look like a track.

Instead, when you drive up to it, you might think you’re headed to another winery. The big race at the pretty road course goes Sunday at 3 on TSN.

It’s going to be a big night tonight at Red River Co-Op Speedway as the Modified Specials, along with the four cylinders, the Super Stocks, Super Trucks and Street Stocks head out to the little dirt track just south of the city.

It will be fun to see if our old friend Rick Lowey can match last week’s effort in the Super Trucks. Racing starts at 7:30. If there’s a rainout, the make up date is tomorrow.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers pounded the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 32-22 last night. All four quarterbacks played error-free football as Winnipeg absolutely dominated the visit Ti-Cats.

I know, pre-season games mean nothing. After all the Goldeyes went 0-4-1 in the pre-season and are now 21-8. But head coach Mike Kelly wanted to show how good his Bombers could be and last night, his players made a statement for him. Now, let’s stop with the Jeff Reinebold stuff, shall we?

Todd Richards of Crystal, Minn., was once a second-round draft choice of the Montreal Canadiens. In 1985, he appeared in eight NHL games with the Hartford Whalers.

Well, it took him 23 years to get back to the NHL and now, after just one season as an assistant to Todd McLellan in San Jose, the 42-year-old Richards has been named the second coach in Minnesota Wild history. It’s a dream come true for Richards and should be a good choice for Minnesota’s team.

This week, the NASCAR Nextel Cup boys are in Sonoma, California for a road race, the Toyota/Save Mart 350.

Last year’s winner was Kyle Busch and he’ll have as good a chance as anybody at Infineon, one of only two places on the Sprint Cup circuit where the drivers actually turn right.

Tonight, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers will play their only pre-season game at home this season when they face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Canad Inns Stadium.

And for fans going to the stadium tonight, you’ll get a chance to see four quarterbacks: Stefan LeFors will take the ball to start the game, Bryan Randall will play the second, James Kilian the third and Richie Williams will get the fourth quarter. No matter the outcome, we should learn something tonight.
