This may be the saddest weekend I’ve ever experienced here in Fort McMurray in my seven years here.

Friday’s tragedy has left our entire community with heavy hearts, sadness, anger and frustration.

All of those emotions are completely understandable.

I have mused in this very space about how long the twinning of highway 63 has taken.

The Alaska Highway was completed in less than 5 years and is a modern marvel of engineering and yet in 5 years here we have 16 kilometres of 63 twinned south of Fort McMurray.

Our new MLA’s Don Scott and Mike Allen haven’t even been officially sworn in yet but they already face what will likely be the defining moment of their tenure.

No matter what happens with this issue over the next couple of weeks in the capital city, whether twinning is fast tracked or not, and hopefully it is, it will still take time to build a highway. We just can’t snap our fingers and make it appear.

In the meantime we need to funementally shift the thinking of those who traverse the highway.

We live in a city with a very young population which for the most part makes us a vibrant community, but it also means a large segment of this community believes they are invincible.

That is where we need the biggest change. When you travel highway 63 you are not just responsible for yourself you also are responsible for those around you to make sure you don’t put them in life or death situations with your recklessness. You are responsible to your family to make sure you are there for them for years to come.

You are responsible to make sure you don’t just become another cross on the side of the road that is a sad reminder of someone’s poor decision.

Yes the highway has to be twinned, but the easiest and most timely change has to come from within.
