This is a last call

October 3rd, 2012 by nolanhaukeness

Yesterday Dave Grohl finally confirmed that the Foo Fighters are going on hiatus.

“Dave here. Just wanted to write and thank you all again from the bottom of my heart for another incredible year. (Our 18th, to be exact!) We truly never could have done any of this without you…

Never in my wildest dreams did I think Foo Fighters would make it this far. I never thought we COULD make it this far, to be honest. There were times when I didn’t think the band would survive. There were times when I wanted to give up. But… I can’t give up this band. And I never will. Because it’s not just a band to me. It’s my life. It’s my family. It’s my world.

Yes… I was serious. I’m not sure when the Foo Fighters are going to play again. It feels strange to say that, but it’s a good thing for all of us to go away for a while. It’s one of the reasons we’re still here. Make sense? I never want to NOT be in this band. So, sometimes it’s good to just… put it back in the garage for a while…”

I do get the sense that they will be back but they have now entered that rare pantheon of bands that can put out a new album ever 5-10 years and it will be a huge event.

Gord watches Community I guess?

October 2nd, 2012 by nolanhaukeness

If you, like me, are a big fan of the NBC sitcom Community then this new Tragically Hip song has a familiar title.

If you aren’t a fan of Community then you are officially streets behind.

Did I see that right?

I would give anything to be interviewed on the TV news and be asked for my “title”.

One would assume that these people were never asked what their title is.

Two lockouts ended yesterday

September 28th, 2012 by nolanhaukeness

So just in case you were living under a rock yesterday, the regular NFL referees and the league came to an agreement and they were in action last night as Baltimore and Cleveland tangled.

Well yesterday morning I was briefly locked out and replaced by management, but much like the NFL, they caved.

Best movie sing-a-longs

September 27th, 2012 by nolanhaukeness

There are times when movies and intertwine perfectly and become something that is remembered for a long time. Here are a few of those moments.

1. Bohemian Rhapsody from Wayne’s World

I remember seeing this movie in the theatre and everyone was busting a gut. This also brought Bohemian Rhapsody somewhat out of obscurity and into the mass consciousness.

2. Tiny Dancer from Almost Famous

One of the best scenes from a perfect rock n’ roll movie.

3. Sweet Caroline from Beautiful Girls

A completely and totally underrated movie and a song that consistently makes me think of Will Ferrell’s Neil Diamond impression, which is never bad.

4. Twist and Shout from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

When John Hughes originally asked The Beatles for the rights to use this song they refused. Thank god they eased up and made it happen. I can’t imagine this movie without that scene.

Chance to re-watch history

September 26th, 2012 by nolanhaukeness

It is the 40th anniversary of the 1972 Summit Series.

If you are my age you only heard about this series and its importance to the fabric of the country from your parents or through hearing interviews with Phil Esposito or other members of the team.

Tonight TSN is broadcasting game 8 of the 72 Summit Series and if you have never seen it I can’t recommend you watch it enough and see just how crazy it was.

Paul Henderson says to this day people don’t really ask him questions about the series or the goal but they want to tell him stories about their experience which tells you all you need to know about how much that game has affected our country.

A football game broke the internet

September 25th, 2012 by nolanhaukeness

Last night’s NFL Monday Nighter may be the weirdest game I have ever seen.

Let’s start with the end, a hail mary from Russell Wilson to Golden Tate (who clearly pushed Green Bay’s Sam Shields) appeared to be intercepted by M.D. Jennings. The refs were clearly confused and one called an interception the other signalled touchdown citing simultaneous possession.

In the case of simultaneous possession the tie goes to the receiver, however, this picture shows I don’t think this is even close to simultaneous possession.

Why MD Jennings didn’t just bat the ball down like you practice in a hail mary situation, I don’t know.

So, Seattle wins and Green Bay loses and the Packers players went to Twitter to vent.

Here is the thing, should TJ Lang, a guard on an offensive line that gave up NINE SACKS, be saying the refs cost them the game?

Yeah, there was a very crucial bad call that went against your team. But you can’t give up nine sacks and expect to win a game.

The one thing the Packers and their fans should remember in all this is that they also had two very sketchy calls go in their favour that kept drives alive and led to nine points. They aren’t mentioning that.

As a Steelers fan, I can guarantee you Seattle fans would have brought it up. They still want the results of Super Bowl XL overturned.

We should probably overturn last night too hey ‘Hawks fans?

I knew something was up with Billie Joe

September 24th, 2012 by nolanhaukeness

A couple of weeks ago when Green Day had to cancel a concert in Italy because Billie Joe Armstrong had “vocal exhaustion”, I said that something seemed extremely fishy. Especially since they were able to play days later at the VMA’s.

Then last week at the I Heart Radio festival, this happened. (Definitely NSFW)

Side note: Hilarity (“I’m not Justin F**king Bieber) aside, Green Day has since said their set was not cut short.

Then yesterday it was announced that Billie Joe is headed to rehab for his abuse of various substances including prescription pills and alcohol.

Some Green Day insiders have said this is way past due.

It’s not a good time for this to happen either (or maybe it is for publicity reasons) as the first of their three album trilogy Uno comes out this week.
