Gold Mine

Back from Mexico

March 16th, 2010 by Rob Michaels

Dang, it’s been a long time since I’ve blogged.  I tried to blog from Mexico, but it was hard to find a descent and reliable internet connection.  There are a few videos lurking around from our trip to Mexico, some of which have bonus codes in them.  Now this first video doesn’t have a bonus code in it, but DANCING will work to get you some points!!

Bobsleigh Last Friday

March 2nd, 2010 by Rob Michaels

I ditched work early on Friday and went up to the Bobsleigh event at the Whistler Sliding Centre!  It was great!! This is a sport where the TV just doesn’t do it justice.  These sleds are travelling so fast, I couldn’t keep up with the camera and it took me about 20 tries to get a half decent photo!

Bottle vs. Tap

March 1st, 2010 by Rob Michaels

You’ve heard me rant on my dislike for bottled water before, but nobody can sum it up better than my pal Derek Forgie.  Check out this video which is already garnering HUGE views on YouTube

Take the Pledge and don’t drink bottled water on March 11th!!!

Off to Mexico next week.  Did you find yourself without a plane ticket?  That’s ok.  We start broadcasting from Mexico on March 8th and while we are there, we’ll be giving away another trip! All the details are in the contest page in the Gold Mine.

Remember, don’t waste money, time, energy and resources with bottled water and be bottle free on March 11th!!

THE BACHELOR

Well Jake “THE MISTAKE” chose Vienna last night.  IDIOT, but to each their own.  I’m sure he saw something in Vienna that ABC wouldn’t let us see.  They also announced Alli as the new Bachelorette!  SWEET!!!

Do you find Vienna sometimes looks like a Fraggle?

Who chose Vienna, his full name, first and last, will get you points.

Great night for Freestyle Aerialists

February 23rd, 2010 by Rob Michaels

Steve, Kyle, Warren all qualify for Aerials final

On a nerve wracking night of qualifying all three Canadians qualified for Thursday night’s Olympic Aerials finals. Steve Omischl, Warren Shouldice and Kyle Nissen all put it together when it counted. Omischl and Shouldice downgraded their difficulty and both executed beautiful lay/double full/fulls on their second jump to secure their spots.

Nissen’s quadruple twisting second jump almost cost him but he saved his landing on the very soft landing hill.

Two of the favourites failed to advance as both World Cup winner Anton Kushnir of Belarus and 2006 Olympic Champion Han Xiaopeng of China crashed on their second jumps.

It was a great night of jumping, and a great night for the Canadians!

Day 11 of the Vancouver 2010 Olympics

February 22nd, 2010 by Rob Michaels

It was sad night last night as Canada lost to the US.  Do you find that Sidney Crosby & SNL’s Andy Samberg look alike?

Big day for me today!! I told you I am a washed up Freestyle Skier and one of the guys that got me in the sport and kept me in it for so long was Canada’s Steve Omischl.  I grew up skiing with him and he, along with our coaches Luc & Jim taught me everything I know about skiing!  Steve is representing Canada in the Men’s Aerials event tonight.  He’s been to the Salt Lake and Turin Games and despite being one of the most decorated aerialists in the sport, he hasn’t been able to find the podium!  I’ve never seen him more focused than now!  These are his games!! GO STEVE GO!!!  Here’s an ol’ training pic from 1998.  Steve is in the front!

I was so tiny and I wore pink boots.  What was I thinking??  Fun days in Lake Placid at the Training Ramps though!!

STEVE OMISCHL - bonus code, but only if you watch and cheer for him tonight at 6pm!!!!

Men’s Hockey on Day 7

February 19th, 2010 by Rob Michaels

A nail biter of a hockey game last night with Canada and the Swiss.  I feel bad for those people at the game who paid all that money for a seat, but were only sitting on the edge of it for the whole game.  DUMB JOKE (cue drum roll thing)

Canada’s next game is Sunday and will most definitely be a great battle of a game starting at 4:30pm against the US.  Mountain FM’s Jon Rees was at the game and asking people who they think will win in the final game.

So I’m going to go out on a limb and assume that Canada will make it to the final game, but who will they be playing?  Take the poll in the Gold Mine, tell us what you think and eaern some bonus points!

Jon also talked with hockey fans to find out what your favourite hockey moment of all time is!

Do you have a fav?? Leave a comment below

Yesterday was Day 6 of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter games giving Canada a silver medal in Women’s Speed Skating from Marianne St. Gelais who was celebrating her win while celebrating her 20th birthday.  Must be nice huh?  Congrats Marianne!!

Mountain FM’s Jon Rees hit the slopes yesterday to find out where people are from and how the conditions are!

You never know who you will run into at the Olympics in Vancouver.  After Jon hit the slopes in Whistler to find out where people were from, he headed over to Cypress to report live from the Men’s Snowboard Halfpipe event.  Thousands of people from all over the world came to see how big Shaun White would go in the pipe and among those thousands of people was Tony Hawk.

Of course Jon being Jon stopped him and had a quick little chat with Tony who was enjoying the Halfpipe event with his son.

Jon caught some great photos from the Halfpipe event!!

4 days in a row that Canada has been on the podium.  It was a big day for Sea to Sky Country and Squamish yesterday as Maelle Ricker brought home Gold in Snowboard Cross.  Once the fog lifted on Cypress, she looked really strong.  She’s a great griend to Mountain FM and we congratulate Maelle on her win!

Looking ahead to Day 6 today, there are some opportunities for Canadians to rack up more medals.  Ladies downhill starts at 11am and the weather forecast looks great.  Of course Canada’s Emily Brydon and Britt Janyk look to push American’s Lindsey Vonn off the podium.  Anything can happen in downhil!!!

Whistler’s Britt Janyk will get you points today!!! Enjoy Day 6 of the Olympic Winter Games

Squamish Mayor Greg Gardner jonined me this morning to congratulate Squamish Olympians and the Sea to Sky Corridor for being such great ambassadors during the first 5 days of the games.
