A plague on all their houses
Politicians. What a word, what a concept. To a politician everything is about politics. And nothing is above being used as a political football. Take Bill C-311 our attempt at having a climate change policy. Now realize of course that Canada is the only signatory of Kyoto Accord that is not going to meet its CO2 reduction commitments. Other signatories are building green economies, creating and researching green technologies that get them off coal, oil and the host of fossil fuels that plague us. Here in Canada we have increased emissions for goodness sake since the Kyoto signing! Our actions are a monumental embarrassment.
The current claim, by our environment minister, Prentice, is that we will cut our emissions by 20 per cent by 2020. Which is so laughable and feeble that we might as well do nothing, which is of course, what we are doing!
So yesterday we had a vote in the House of Parliament on what do do with the climate change bill, C-311. You would think that this would be the perfect time for the main parties in opposition to stand up and make some sort of statement that would be recognized around the world as a clear refutation of the silly, infantile anti-science stance of this fundamentalist government. After all we have the Liberals and Michael Ignatieff, writer, scholar and leader of the opposition to count on to hold the government to task. And then there is the NDP who insist that cap and trade will do the trick, when it has never worked in any jurisdiction, anywhere. It just does not lower CO2 emissions. I do have to admit they did vote against delaying the bill, but these days trying to understand all the posturing and watching these people trying to gain an upper hand and using any issue as a lever for their own ends, makes so skeptical of their motives that I despair.
Now also note, the science is clear. Andrew Weaver, our head climate scientist and author of “Keeping Our Cool” which I recommend to anyone and everyone, has toured the country debunking and rebutting the skeptics and try to convince our politicians of the dire threats we have in the anthropogenic warming of the Earth. Note that Professor Weaver is a key climate scientist in the IPCC reports and shares in the Nobel Prize the IPCC was awarded. The science is irrefutable and clear. How can anyone not be afraid? In the face of what is a mountain of evidence, the people who are supposed to our leaders, local, provincial and federal, still whistle past the graveyard, still think its business as usual and that rhetoric will hod back the warming of the planet.
I am so sad and embarrassed. Canada used to lead and be a beacon of thought and rational actions. A plague on all your houses and may we survive in spite of you!
