In 1991 while on a trip to see a friend in Washington I stopped at a 7-11 store and asked about hotels close to Walter Reed Army Hospital. The store clerk said there were some on the back street but perhaps I should keep looking. I went to the location and found 4 hotels and picked the first one I came to. Clean, well kept and brightly lit, I regestered, parked my car in the hotel lot and went to my room. In the morning got my wakeup call, showered, dressed and went to checkout. The day manager was taking over from the night shift and looked at me like I was weird. Looking around while the bill was made I found out why. Besides two white tour guides, I was the 'other' white person in attendance. The night man explained to the manager that I was Canadian, from Ottawa. I paid my bill and reached over to shake his hand and thanked him for running such a clean, well run hotel and said I would recomend it to my friends. That was when he smiled. In the heart of Silver Springs, northwest Washington, there are to this day "Black Hotels" open to even colorblind Canadians that need a place to lay their heads.

Hi, "The Book of Negros" was an amazing story. I couldn't put the book down. I cannot believe that anyone was ever treated that way but it did happen. It shouldn't offend anyone its history (even though its only based on history). It the way of the world.
