Randall – this caller certainly doesn’t have the welfare of the community or patients in mind with her feedback. From personal experience I can tell you that access to the appropriate care and specialists is a priority for patients at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. We had an urgent referral which ended up being cancer from QCH’s Emergency. The referral was to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Program which is based at the General. Previously our family had two other cancer-related illnesses which were handled at The Ottawa Hospital and there was no difference in accessibility or quality of care. If anything, the care was more personal and caring at QCH as it is a community hospital with a focus on the patient and family. This caller is doing your mother and the community a dis-service with her comments. No hospital can control the length of time it takes to see a specialist. Those wait times are determined by the physician’s private practice. What hospitals do do is find the appropriate specialist who can see their patients in the most timely manner possible.
