I can add to the merit of your 1MM 2day Randall.
- Kay EmmRight behind me is one of those City parks that put up a Rink with boards.
about 5 yrs ago,it was always packed of very busy with skaters outside & in the Boarded rink, esp at night, then they had one big light.
over the years the crowds have diminished,& I see a lot of these kids still in the hood, but with phones in their hands & texting every where they go.
Just last year, they built a heated shack & have put up poles with about 8 lights now & Bright or what !
& a Button on the shack that you push to fire up the lights, all stuff they never had 5 yrs ago.
& now the rink sits empty almost every day & night.
I know what your saying & its true & its pretty sad.
Hi Randal,
I agree with you that today’s generation is dependent on electronic gizmo’s and it’s definitely a factor. I believe though that it’s a parents responsibility to not only introduce our children to fitness, but to also encourage and participate in sports with them. Sports is vital to us all; it promotes fitness, discipline, well being all around, it channels kids [and adults] energy in a positive direction.
My message to parents is: get out there and play with your kids, enjoy the slopes and the rinks…take them biking, out for hikes, and camping. It’s not how much money we spend on them; on their electronic gadgets that makes them happy or that they will remember, it’s the time we spend with them and the experiences we give them that truly matters.
Kate Olson
- Kate OlsonThis past summer, I was doing housework and heard strange noises from outside, sounded like a kid being beaten. I ran outside and lo and behold it was the neighbour’s kids playing outside. It took me so much by surprise that I just sat there and watched and listened to them playing. I felt like I was back in my childhood when these sounds were as common as party line ring tones.
- Donna BagussAs a young listener myself I could not agree with you more Randall. Facebook is just so much better than going outside and being active. On facebook, I can just look at pictures of people being active..close enough right? And Randall, come on buddy…it being too cold is not our excuse. Our fat lazy bodies insulate heat very well. That’s why we text all day instead of being active…to build up fat to stay warm.
I understand what you mean about seeing something you loved as a kid and it not being used anymore. I mean if no one was there when you went back (on ONE occasion) to visit it, it must never be used anymore! Simple logic!
I sit around eating chips and dip all day, watching Youtube clips online waiting to hear you on the radio Randall. I’m actually a big fan. But I could tell today you just didn’t have anything to talk about. Because to suggest that ALL young people aren’t active or participate in sports is a generalization. And in your “profession” a generalization is lazy. And no one wants to listen a lazy guy on the radio.
I’m Joe Swanson.
- Joe SwansonHey Randall,
My friend Richard Spano (from the Carleton tavern) always says you have intelligent things to say. I hate to say it, but you’ve made him correct.
Ice time in Kemptville where I coach atom C is $185 per hour (this includes 10 min for the zamboni). We play 3 ten minute stop time periods in our 50 min, so with three forward lines the most ice time I can offer as coach is only 10 MINUTES per player per game!
Get your kids out for two hours (120 mins) on an outdoor rink and they have played the equivalent of 12 GAMES worth of ice time! Find out where the outdoor rinks are and put them to use. The kids even get a blast out of shovelling the snow off! We can give them a taste of the game the way it used to be. Might not have the Sears magazine for shinpads and a horse turd for a puck but it makes you feel like a CANADIAN none the less.
PS. See you for a Quart at the Ugly club
