Kirkland Lake Fire Update – May 23, 2012
(Kirkland Lake, ON) The Ministry of Natural Resources continues to fight the fire just north of the community which began Sunday May 20, 2012. Fire updates are available on-line at www.mnr.gov.on.ca or through the MNR Liaison, Heather Pridham at 705-567-9291 ext3024.
The fire continues to be listed as, “not under control” but progress is being made.
The Kirkland Lake Community Control Group (KLCCG) is using the time to plan for a potential evacuation. There is no evacuation order for the town of Kirkland Lake but the potential exists. The KLCCG is communicating with their neighbours to the north and south to ensure adequate space to house evacuees. The evacuations plans are being reviewed and refined to ensure continuity of services for all members of the community. The North East Community Care Access Center is taking steps to ensure its clients will continue to receive care with minimal disruption. Call North East CCAC at 310-CCAC (310-2222) for more information. The North East CCAC provides nursing, personal support and rehabilitation services to clients of all ages, at home, in school or in the community.
KLCCG has also canvassed local insurance providers and have learned that anyone with home or tenant insurance may be covered for relocation expenses. As part of your evacuation planning, check to ascertain if you have coverage for relocation expenses.
If there is an evacuation, volunteers will be needed to stay behind. Roles will include knocking on doors, loading buses, registering evacuees and manning check-points. The KLCCG is looking for volunteers. Registration forms are available at Kirkland Lake Public Works on Dunfield Road. If you are able to stay behind and assist with any potential evacuation register by bringing photo identification to the Public Works office.
