The mall roof collapse in Elliot Lake has many people here in Sudbury wondering about the safety of local structures.

One of the first buildings that comes to mind is the Rainbow Centre downtown.

Both it and the Algo Mall in Elliot Lake have parking on the roof, but the manager at Rainbow says that is where the similarities end.

Joe Zito says the parking structure at the Rainbow was constructed with safety in mind using a five step process involving a steel deck, concrete and reinforced steel rods.

Zito says they carry out a yearly maintenance plan that saw $2.5 million go into upgrades to the parking garage in 2011.

He says they passed a Building Condition Assessment last fall.
