Investment in Cancer Prevention

The McGuinty government is investing money for Cancer treatment in Sudbury.

An announcement today from Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci will see over 1.5 million dollars go to the Sudbury Regional Hospital’s Regional Cancer Program.

The Integrated Smoking Cessation program will get a boost to help patients quit smoking.

A new project will be started called the Under and Never Screened Project which will focus on those who have never been screened for cancer.

Let’s Remember Adam

It was in the year 2000 when a truck hit 5 year-old Adam Ranger who just came off a school bus.

Since then, The Let’s Remember Adam campaign has brought awareness and changes to school bus safety.

Now, in Ontario, motorists travelling in both directions must stop when approaching a stopped school bus with its upper lights flashing.

A fine of 400 to 2 thousand a 6 demerits points could be handed on a first time offense.

Support staff workers at colleges around Ontario are poised to strike if a contract isn’t met with the Ontario Public Service Employees Union.

A representative for the support staff workers said they have agreed on some parts of the agreement.

They have until midnight tonight to avoid a strike and reach a new deal.

The Co-operative Funeral Home is marking it’s 60th anniversary by paying tribute to Canadian soldiers who died while serving in Afghanistan.

This morning at it’s Lasalle Blvd location, a large Canadian flag was raised to preserve the memory of the fallen soldiers.

President Gerry Berthelot  says it adds to the individual flags that have been planted on the front lawn representing each soldier killed in the line of duty.

Special mention was made of the five local soldiers who have died during the Afghanistan mission…Glenn Arnold, David Byers, Martin Goudreault, Andrew Miller and Gaetan Roberge.

Also in attendance at the flag raising was Sudbury M-P Glenn Thibeault who says seeing all the flags on the lawn really puts it all into perspective.

Registration Up At College Boreal

The number of high school students choosing College Boreal is on the rise.

The french language post secondary facility is reporting a 7.1 increase in registrations over last year.

College president Denis Hubert-Dutrisac credits the quality of the programs offered as well as the excellence demonstrated by staff.

Also getting credit is three new programs being offered this year…Chef Training, Stage Management and Machinist.

Sudbury coffee drinkers are helping Tim Hortons test new cup sizes.

A Tim Hortons spokesman says the company is introducing a new extra-large cup size which will hold 24 ounces or 710 millilitres.

It will also be changing the names of all the cups to make room for the new extra-large, which will cost $1.90 plus tax.

The current small cup will be eliminated, and today’s medium cup will become the small, the large will become the medium and the extra-large will become the large.

The spokesman says research shows customers’ tastes are moving to larger sizes.

The company is also testing the new cup sizes in Kingston for about a month to gauge consumer reaction.

Elections Ontario is giving us all more time and options to vote in the upcoming provincial election.

In the past you could vote during ten days of advance polling or cast your ballot on election day.

Ontario’s deputy electoral officer Loren Wells was in Sudbury today and says that has changed.

The election becomes official on September 7th…as of September 8th, you will have 28 days to apply for a special ballot and vote in person or by mail.

Advance polls will be open September 21st to the 30th.

The provincial election will be held October 6th.

The Canadian women’s hockey team beat the U-S 4-3 in a shoot-out in exhibition play today.

It’s a little revenge for Canada who lost to the Americans 4-0 at the 12 Nations hockey tournament in Finland yesterday.

Team Canada, featuring Sudbury’s Tessa Bonhomme, resumes tournament play against the host team from Finland tomorrow.

Funding For Seniors Health Care

Seniors health care in the area gets a financial boost from the province.

Pioneer Manor will use $190,547 to ensure more health care workers are available to help move immobile seniors around the facility safely.

It’s part of an almost $1.1 million announcement made of Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci today.

$500,000 is going to Finlandia Village for seniors moving into the Lepokoti Residence to live safely, comfortably and with proper care outside of a hospital or long-tern care home.

$386,000 will be used to construct an accessible multi-purpose room at Finlandia Village’s Health and Wellness Centre.

Fewer Students At Rainbow District Schools

The trend of declining enrolment continues for the Rainbow District School Board.

When classes resume next week, board officials are projecting 14, 258 students will be attending classes.

Compared with official enrollment numbers for the 2010-2011 school year, that is a drop of 273 students.

Here is the breakdown:

Elementary schools:  8,689 students..6,257 in the English Program and 2,432 in French Immersion.

Secondary schools: 5,569 students…4,906 in the English Program and 663 in French Immersion.

1,138 students have registered for Grade 9 classes.

744 children are expected to enter Junior Kindergarten now being offered full day every day…803 children have registered in Senior Kindergarten.
