The secret to getting big tips

May 5th, 2011 by Mike

Why do you tip a restaurant server? You may say you tip for good service, but that’s rarely the real reason. SmartMoney reports that how much we tip doesn’t vary with the level of service we receive. So what does encourage us to leave a generous tip?

  1. Breasts — A study published in the Archives of Sexual behavior showed that waitresses with larger self-reported breast size received bigger tips, while a second study in the International Journal of Hospitality Management found that waitresses’ use of makeup significantly increased their tips. Female servers can also increase their tips by drawing a smiley face on the check — but this doesn’t work as well for male servers.
  2. Be Friendly — The friendlier the server, the more likely a customer will leave a generous tip. Friendly behavior includes smiling, greeting and even touching customers and crouching down beside the customers while taking orders.
  3. Copycats — Restaurant servers who copy their customers’ behavior get double the tips of servers who don’t do this. And the No. 1 way to mirror the customer–and get a big payoff for doing it–is to repeat back the order, according to a study from the Netherlands. Mimicry creates bonds between people.
  4. Sweet Treats — Leaving candy with the check can result in a higher tip. One study found that tips increase by about 20 percent when servers give diners two pieces of chocolate along with the bill.
  5. Pay With Plastic — Diners who use credit cards instead of cash to pay their bills are more likely to leave a more generous tip.

How long till this becomes dirty?

May 4th, 2011 by Mike

We were chatting about this on the show today.  It’s a device coming out of Japan that allows people to “kiss” over the internet.  Basically, one person puts their mouth on the device and it simulates what they’re doing…transmits that to another device on the other person’s computer.

.

.

.

I see this getting dirty really fast!

here’s a link to the article and description if you’d like to see what it looks like

Bringin’ it back to the Ol’ Skool!

April 19th, 2011 by Mike

Remember phone booths where people had their conversations in private? WalletPop.com’s has compiled a list of the top 25 things that they wish would make a comeback. Some of their picks have virtually disappeared, while others may still be around but are becoming more and more rare. Here are a few on the list:

  • Drive-in Theaters – The very first drive-in theater opened on Tuesday, June 6, 1933, showing the movie ‘Wife Beware.’ By 1958, nearly 5,000 drive-in theaters were in their twilight entertainment glory.
  • Gas Attendants – A state law enacted in 1949 bans self-service gas stations in New Jersey. According to Infoplease, Oregon is the only other state with such a law, purportedly enacted to prevent accidents.
  • 45 rpm Vinyl Records – You may well wonder, especially if you’re under the age of 30, why anyone would want the 45′s to come back. We do think we have one good argument. Buying a 45 was a special experience.
  • McD’s ‘Fried’ Pie – Anyone who grew up in the ’70s will remember the fried apple pie with a tear in their eye that crunchy, processed pastry crust.McDonald’s fazed out these bad boys in favor of the ostensibly more healthy “baked” apple pie sometime around 1992.
  • Cursive Writing – It suggests a degree of attentiveness and respect that a “Wassup” text message can’t match.
  • Full-Size Spare Tire – There was a time not so long ago when all automobiles were outfitted to carry full-sized spare tires. As the automobile import age overtook us and cars were made smaller to facilitate profitable international shipment, everything became much smaller, including the spare tire.
