Hockeyville
March 17th, 2010 by Mike
We got the wildcard! Great job!!! At this point, we have a 1 in 12 chance of being “Kraft’s Hockeyville.” Now, the goal is to get to the top 5. After that…NUMBER 1!!! If you’re not sure why that’s freakin’ awesome, here’s the deal. WHEN we become Kraft’s Hockeyville, we get 100 grand to upgrade the Mac. That’s not a bad chunk of change! I’m already submitting my plans to get a Q92 Box in there so we have great seats for all the Majors’ games. Anyway, I’m getting ahead of myself. As mentioned, the next step is to get in the top 5….go vote…GO VOTE NOW!!!

Zeppelin find!!
March 16th, 2010 by Mike
Holy Crap! Can you imagine coming across something like this at a yard sale?!!
A rare live recording from 1971 of Led Zeppelin performing at a converted public swimming pool in Ipswich, England has been found in a car trunk, according to the Evening Star. The gig, which took place at St. Matthews Baths Hall, was thought to have never been officially or fully recorded. But a fan named Vic Kemp came across a recording of the entire show on a CD while rummaging through some items being sold out of the back of someone’s car.
- Previous recordings of the show, which had become legendary in the area, were incomplete and patched together from different sources.
- Kemp said, “I was going through a stand of CDs at the car boot at Portman Road and the guy who was selling them said ‘you might be interested in this.’ It doesn’t have a proper cover and the title is just written in felt-tip pen . . . the recording is not too bad at all.”
- Kemp, who was too young to go to the gig at the time, added, “It must have been recorded by someone standing at the front with a microphone. You can hear (singer) Robert Plant talking to the audience quite clearly.” He said he only paid two or three pounds for the recording.
- The Baths Hall opened in 1922 and was a regular concert venue in the ’60s and ’70s. It closed as a music venue in 1984 and is currently empty.
- The concert recording features several cuts from Zeppelin’s fourth album, which had been released just eight days before the show, including “Black Dog,” “Going To California,” “Rock & Roll” and “Stairway To Heaven.”

Rolling Stone smashed some Pumpkins!!
March 4th, 2010 by Mike
Smashing Pumpkins frontman and sole original member Billy Corgan opens up to Rolling Stone magazine in his first interview with the publication in a decade. According to excerpts published on the magazine’s website, Corgan says he’s had a rough time in the 10 years since he last spoke with Rolling Stone, revealing that he was waking up every morning for a while and thinking, “Go eat breakfast, or go kill yourself.”
- Corgan discusses his much-reported relationship with Jessica Simpson, saying he “loves” her but declining to get specific: “If I go, ‘Oh, we’re just friends,’ then it’s like, ‘Did they go out, did he dump her or she dump him, what happened?’ It has nothing to do with any of that. Sometimes people just like being around each other, and good things come out of that. My goal in life is to love whoever I think is worth loving, and I think if people knew her like I knew her, they would love her like I do. It’s really simple.”
- Corgan also talks about his 2009 split with the Pumpkins’ last original member apart from himself, drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, saying that he fired him. He also discusses his father’s heroin addiction, revealing that his dad was arrested two years ago with a needle still in his arm.
- In another excerpt, Corgan asks, “Do I belong in the conversation about the best artists in the world? My answer is yes, I do . . . I am influential. I am.”
- The interview appears in the new issue of Rolling Stone, out now.

Dave Carroll’s webcast
March 2nd, 2010 by Mike
Tonight at 7:30, Timmins’ own Dave Carroll will be webcasting the release of the third and final installment of his “United Breaks Guitar” series. These songs are hugely popular and a lot of fun. I’m sure we’ve all been screwed around by some company at one time or another and it’s nice to see that it’s not just us common folk that have to put up with it.
Here’s the link for the webcast…again, tonight at 7:30!
Happy Birthday to Dr Seuss!! I wish you weren’t dead!
March 2nd, 2010 by Mike
Children’s author Dr. Seuss was born in 1904. How about some Dr. Seuss Pickup Lines:
I may not like Green ham or eggs, but I sure love your long, thin legs!
From far or near or here or there, haven’t I seen you before somewhere?
That’s not the only place this Sneetch has a star, Baby.
Y’know, after he stole it, the Grinch hid Christmas — in my pants!
Is that a Cat in your Hat or are you just happy to see me?
My heart ain’t the only thing two sizes too large, if you know what I mean.
On a boat, in a car, with your toes all curled — Oh, the places we’ll go when I rock your world!
Each book makes a million, a zillion, or three. Would you, could you come home with me?
In all of Hooterville, where there’s Hooters supreme, yours are the best of the the Hooters I’ve seen!
I hate this place — the crowd here’s so phony, say, would you care to ride my pony?
BUS LOADS READY TO GREET MINES MINISTER: Coalition Offers Up Free Bus Rides to Save Our Resources Rally
March 1st, 2010 by Mike
Your chance to tell the Ontario Government to help Timmins comes this Thursday in Sudbury. The CAW and the Save Our Resources Coalition have organized buses to head to Sudbury Thursday to greet Mines Minister Michael Gravelle and top Xstrata officials at a mine opening ceremony. “We want to show both the government and the company how important the Xstrata facility in Timmins is to the people of the region. This is the community’s golden opportunity to demonstrate it face to face.” Buses leave Timmins at 5am and will return around 6pm. There is no charge to get on the bus but officials need a head count. “Anyone wanting to join the rally, need to contact Brian Watson to confirm a seat before Wednesday at 10am.”
Officials also advise that you dress for the weather since the event will be held outside

Oly’s Pix….

So, the games have ended….AND WHAT AN ENDING! I’m assuming you saw the Gold Game of Hockey last night? If not, you missed one of the biggest games in hockey history (in my humble opinion). Canada gets out to a lead, USA comes back and with a last second goal - it goes to O.T. Syd the Kid scores and Canada gets the gold!! It’ll be a very memorable moment for a lot of us. That goal really capped off what was a GREAT Winter Games for our country. One stat that I didn’t know going in was, we have NEVER won a gold medal in Canada. That’s crazy to me. However, we finally got one…..thank you Alexandre Bilodeau (am i the only one that got a bit misty when seeing his brother cheer him on?)…then another…and another…finally, we had more golds than anyone else at the games…then we had more golds than any other host nation…THEN we had more golds than anyone ever at a Winter Games. Truly amazing!
One of the great lines came from Brian Williams after the hockey game. He said that the nation would have one giant collective headache tomorrow morning. But, my GOD, it was all worth it!
GOOD JOB CANADA!!!
