Finally, Science That Matters!

Research chefs at a culinary lab in Bellevue, Washington believe they’ve discovered the way to make the best french fries. The potato batons are vacuum-sealed with 2% salt brine in bags, then bombarded with intense ultrasound waves from the same device that dentists and jewelers use. Afterward, they’re vacuum-dried, then double-dipped in extremely hot oil. The result: A hugely satisfying crunch when you bite through the exterior that yields to a center of incredibly smooth mashed-potato consistency.

Working in the nice weather sucks…here’s how you can make it better

I read this today and thought it was pretty interesting. Is it possible to move the station to the Hollinger Water Park?
HOW TO SURVIVE WORKING IN SUMMER:
• Give Yourself a Break – Too many of us fail to take any vacation whatsoever. Commit to using at least part of your accumulated vacation time during summer.
• Look Into Flex Time – See if you can work longer hours Monday through Thursday in order to leave early on Friday, or come in earlier each day so you can leave earlier and enjoy summer afternoons.
• Bring Summer Into the Office – Put flowers on your desk, a beach screensaver on your computer, play some summer music, etc.
• Make the Most of Your Lunch Hour – Get outdoors in a nearby park and treat yourself to a business day picnic, or find a café with outdoor seating.
• Take Your Work Outside – See if you can move a meeting outdoors, or try to steal some quiet moments outside with your laptop

I’m Just Big Bonned…
May 30th, 2011 by Mike
Last night, the girlfriend and I were sitting on the couch. No, really, JUST sitting on it. Out of nowhere, there’s a loud “snap” sound and we fall about an inch. That can’t be good. After checking one side of the couch to the other, we determined that the couch was broken. Turn the couch over, rip off that material that covers up the bottom…whatever the hell it’s called and we had broken a screw. Literally, the screw holding the couch to the arm rest had snapped!! Two pilot holes and two new screws later, the couch was reinforced and sit-onable again.

Have you ever broken a piece of furniture JUST by sitting on it? Let me tell ya, it’s quite the confidence boost! :/
Daredevil Priest…sounds like a bit of a contradiction.
May 27th, 2011 by Mike
A group of daredevil priests were living on a prayer when they climbed aboard one of the world’s most terrifying roller coasters in a dramatic effort to increase church attendance. As the number of churchgoers continues shrinking to an all time low, two amusement parks have joined forces with the clerics to give people an alternative place to pray. Many of the courageous canons could be seen clasping their hands in prayer, while others looked as if they were simply hanging on for dear life. The priests were competing for the title of Most Extreme Vicar, and the winner gets to lead Sunday services, Bible in hand, while hurtling through the air at 70 miles an hour. “I wholeheartedly support this creative proposal of worship,” says the Reverend Chris White, of Royston, England. “Young people are searching for meaning in life and are disillusioned with what they see in the established churches. This alternative would definitely appeal to them.” (Sun)

That kinda makes sense to me. One of the best places to yell “OH GOD!!” is on a roller coaster…usually right before yelling, “I’M GONNA PUKE!!“
But He NEVER Does Interviews…
May 26th, 2011 by Mike
Van Halen guitarist Eddie Van Halen gave a rare interview to Smithsonian magazine to talk about his “Frankenstein” guitar, a replica of which was donated to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History earlier this year. Van Halen told the magazine how the original axe was created, explaining, “The original ‘Frankenstein’ was a result of me tinkering and experimenting with different elements of electric guitars that I liked. I created an instrument that wasn’t offered as an ‘off the rack’ guitar by any manufacturer at the time.”
- The reclusive guitarist admitted, however, that he doesn’t take the “Frankenstein” on tour with him anymore, saying, “I retired it from regular use. It took so much abuse from endless touring and recording; I wanted to pay some respect to it and let it survive and not let it get destroyed completely . . . I still play it every now and then. It’s priceless to me.”
- Van Halen also discussed his favorite collaboration in the interview, saying, “Michael Jackson‘s ‘Beat It’ is a standout for me . . . It was a lot of fun to do. It’s crazy that something could take such a short amount of time and can grow into something beyond anything you could ever imagine.”
- The guitarist did not discuss the band’s new album with singer David Lee Roth, which is said to be nearing completion, or its plans to tour behind the disc.

If you’d like to check out the entire interview, here it is!
