A public information meeting was held last evening by the DNR to provide an update on the Duck Lake fire in Michigan’s U-P … more than 200 people attended … and received word that so far 80 structures – homes, cabins garages, outbuildings and sheds – have been destroyed by fire – with some 100 properties inventoried for damage including The Rainbow Lodge at the mouth of the Two Hearted River that has been heavily damaged. It remains a long narrow fire – stretching 11 miles from about 14 miles north of Newberry and 7 miles west of Tahquamenon Falls campgrounds to the shore of Lake Superior. An evacuation order remains in effect for the area from Pike Lake east to County Road 500 and north to Little Lake Harbour. Tahquamenon Falls State Park’s lower falls campground remained closed over the Memorial Day weekend.
A steady drizzle yesterday brought relief to northern Ontario communities battling massive forest fires, allowing some residents to return home.
Some areas of Kirkland Lake were deemed safe by last night.
But despite the rain, hundreds of residents in Timmins are still barred from their homes, cottages and campsites.
