Minnesota Gives And Receives
Monday, February 28th, 2011
4:58 pm- – - February 28th, 2011
Right-winger Mikko Lehtonen and D-man Jeff Penner were sent to Minnesota; Boston will get Goalie Anton Khudobin in return.
Boston will love this goaltender, Khubodin played in four games with the Wild early this year and was absolutely brilliant picking up two wins with a .940 save percentage. A flexible and poised net-minder who will be a great back-up for Boston’s goal-tending roster.
Penner, a 183-pound blue-liner is going to support the defensemen for the Wild and supply for the team with options. Lehtonen, in my opinion is the player who is the better of the of the two, who was very successful with the Providence Bruins (AHL Affiliate) and the Skelleftea HC (SEL) in the recent past.
Oberg And A Third To Florida, Higgins To Vancouver
Monday, February 28th, 2011
4:26pm- – - February 28th, 2011
Vancouver is stacking another gem to the list of talented players adding veteran winger Chris Higgins. The forward will add a lot of speed to their already fast pile of forwards with the ability to play the puck with 11 goals in 48 contests.
Sitting first in the Western Conference, Canucks GM Mike Gillis made a smart move to trade prospect Evan Oberg and a third-rounder to Florida. The Canucks do not really give up that much- – - he signed as a free agent in 2009 and has been apart of the Manitoba Moose in the AHL. The six-foot Forrestburg, Alta. native had seven goals to date this 2010-2011 campaign.
Florida’s biggest pick-up in this trade would be an eventual third-rounder in 2011.
Another Minor Deal with Flyers And Blue Jackets
Monday, February 28th, 2011
4:00 pm- – - February 28th, 2011.
The Flyers and the Blue Jackets have made a minor deal at the end of the trade deadline day. Philly acquired Centre Tom Sestito of the Springfield Falcons (AHL Affiliate) in exchange for Greg Moore of the Phantoms (AHL Affilaite) who has scored 7 goals in 57 games as well as Michael Chaput. The centreman has played in the QMJHL with the Lewiston MAINEiacs and has posted 22 goals in 55 performances.
Minor Deal: Festerling and MacIntyre
Monday, February 28th, 2011
3:58pm- – - February 28th, 2011.
The Atlanta Thrashers traded goaltender Drew MacIntyre in exchange for Montreal’s defenseman Brett Festerling.
Festerling is a ticking time bomb with his 25th birthday this Thursday. It is the second time he has been traded this season so it is essentially do-or-die for the blue-liner.
MacIntyre supplies the Habs with back-up in the goaltending area but I would not place too much faith in the netminder because the majority of his experience is in the AHL with the Moose and Wolves.
Essentially, both Festerling and MacIntyre have to prove themselves in their new organizations.
Flames Grab Modin
Monday, February 28th, 2011
3:48- – - February 28th, 2011.
The Flames have acquired Thrashers forward Fredrik Modin only to receive a seventh-round pick in 2011.
No question, Modin is an absolute steal for the Flames. Modin is an NHL veteran who has played 894 NHL games and is well into his 14th season. Modin is clearly not the same 30-goal scorer he once was, but he still has a hard shot and can make plays happen with his abundance of experience. If I had to guess, he would most likely be on the Flames’ third-line depending on how he meshes when he first arrives.
His age and youth is not on his side, so the nagging back issues he has struggled with for years may be a problem for him but it does not matter where Head Coach Brent Sutter decides to put him, the Swedish native will contribute.

Washington and New Jersey: Arnott and Steckel
Monday, February 28th, 2011
3:25pm- – - February 28th, 2011.
Washington has let go of left-winger Dave Steckel to the New Jersey Devils for Centreman Jason Arnott.
Steckel (the guy who gave Golden Boy Sidney Crosby the concussion in the Winter Classic this season) has six goals and five assists in 57 contests this year with the Capitals. A big loss for Washingto, however pick up two guys on trade day that will fill holes that are currently neglected.
Arnott (former Predators Captain) has not had his best season with the Devils. He has competed in 62 games this year and has tallied 24 points with 13 goals. Although it will be tough for Arnott to adjust to the trade, the forward will be a great addition to a team that desperately needs another centre that can bring muscle and grit up the middle to relieve a little bit of pressure to the Caps’ top forward-liners. The veteran has played in 16 NHL seasons so the opportunity to win a Stanley Cup with the Caps will be a huge upside for the forward who has not hoisted the hardware above his head since 2000 when he scored the game-winner in overtime with the Devils.
Toronto Trades Mitchell To The Big City
Monday, February 28th, 2011
3:15 pm- – - February 28th, 2011.
This deep into the Trade Deadline Day…..Clarke MacArthur who was a possible trade today has remained a Maple Leaf….a very productive and important Maple Leaf.
Anyway….Centreman John Mitchell who has one goal this season with the Marlies was traded to the New York Rangers for a seventh-round pick in 2012. This is the best move Brian Burke could up with? This is his master plan? Mayb, just maybe there will be another move for Toronto.
Dustin Penner To Los Angeles
Monday, February 28th, 2011
3:16 pm- – - February 28th, 2011
Oilers Right-winger Dustin Penner heads to Los Angeles for d-man Colten Teubert, a first-round pick in 2011 and a conditional third-round pick in 2012.
The former Oilers forward can use his hands, dazzle on the ice and put the puck in the back of the net. Penner was in his fourth season with Edmonton and has 126 goals in 405 NHL games. Penner has one year left on the five-year, $21.25 million contract and will earn $4.25 million in 2011-12 before becoming an unrestricted free agent.
Teubert was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the 1st round (13th overall) in 2008. The White Rock, B.C. native has zero NHL action to date. Basically, I have nothing to go off with this player…the Oilers decision for this trade did not come from acquiring this guy.
With the appetite for trade news set to hit a fever pitch, Sportsnet Radio FAN 590′s coverage will serve up all the breaking NHL trades, reaction from players, analysis and features on Monday, February 28 starting at 5:30 a.m. and deliver up-to-the minute breaking news and analysis during its entire broadcast.
Brad Winchester For A Third-Round Pick
Monday, February 28th, 2011
2:12pm – - - February 28th, 2011.
Blues Left-winger Brad Winchester has been traded to Anaheim for a third-round pick in 2011.
The six-foot-five forward only has nine goals for the Blues. My personal opinion, Winchester will give depth to Anaheim who is clawing to stay in the Western Conference playoff mix. A good trade for both teams, Winchester only scored nine goals for the Blues this season but if given more opportunities in Anaheim he has the potential to shine.
