The Flames arrived in Denver in mid-afternoon on Wednesday and took another approach to preparing for what is becoming their weekly Thursday game on the road.

It will be the fourth time the Flames have played away on Thursday. Earlier in the season, the Flames plan was to practice in Calgary and take their charter flight to wherever the game would be the next evening.  Since that didn’t bring success, Mike Keenan changed the routine last week.  He had the team arrive early in San Jose last Wednesday and practice after landing. The result was a 6-1 humbling at the hands of the Sharks.

This time it was arrival and then head directly to an off-ice workout at the team’s hotel. Thursday night we get the result with the Flames trying to end a 4-game road losing streak and win their regular-season series from the Avalanche, even at this early date.

General Manager Darryl Sutter has this theory that if the Flames can win their season series from the other 4 teams in NW Division that they’d have excellent chance to finish in first place.

It has much merit.  The Avs have won the season series 8 of the last 9 years against the Flames. The one year they didn’t was 2005-06. That was the season the Flames ended the Avs 7-year hold on the divsion pennant.
