Here are the following players that are going to be potentially moved:
Sarich
Moss
Dawes
Boyd
Higgins
Kotalyk
That is if the flames organization are indeed after freeing up some cap room & acquiring prospects/draft picks.
If a trade comes up last minute we have to consider the fact Sutter may be inclined to deal our players on the outer crust of the core.
Langkow
Glencross
Regehr
Maybe a goalie?
PS: I don’t know man, I mean, I won’t be surprised if Darryl goes out and does something. There are some that think that he’ll go out and make a deal that brings in a big fish. I just wonder if the Flames have the assets currently to do that. That all being said, an NHL team can carry as many bodies as they want on their roster once the trade deadline passes…as long as the team stays under the cap. So Calgary very well may stick with what they have.
- JevonSimon Gagne is a UFA at the end of this season maybe Sutters meetings with Holmgreen do mean something
A Jeff carter would be amazing but what we would have to send back many Calgary fans will not be completely satisfied with
PS: You’ve heard the Flyers linked to a lot of teams…something like that could be possible. Then again, I just don’t know if Calgary has the assets (remember, no 1st or 2nd round pick this year) to bring a guy like Carter in.
- JevonI would like to see them bring in a depth forward, who is actually having a good year. A consistent 2nd line scoring forward. Last two years, it seems we trade for struggling players and hope they turn it around… I think its obvious that they haven’t done that this year, no did jokinen do it last year.
PS: At least the Jokinen deal from last year was a big splash. He had been struggling in Phoenix, you’re right, but he’d also been not that far removed from a number of 30 goal seasons…and they had to give up players and a 1st rounder to get that done. I think it’s possible Calgary gets a guy who can play top 6, but it won’t be as easy without 1st and 2nd round picks this year.
- ScottI see Calgary Make 2 Trades Today Pat – I see em sending a guy like Glencross or Boyd for a 2nd Rounder – Then sending the Secound rounder and A Goaltender Prospect + A Defensive Prospect or Langkow/Reghar (IF THEY WAVE THE NTC)For Carter – I think we can get it done. We’d just need to make room for next year if Langkow or Reghar don’t wave. Calgary Needs to shed some bodies.
PS: I like the way you think…very optimisitc. The only problem with your Carter scenario is that Langkow and Regehr make more than 9 million combined. Sure, it saves room for Calgary, but why would Philly want to take on that much salary, if they even could? The other one…yeah, it’s possible, certainly is.
- RobIn response to the above comment re trading Langkow… Does the long term signing of Stajan spell the end for Langkow? With Stajan and Backlund our 1 and 2 centres, even if he is a sutter player, has Langkow’s time as a flame come to an end, regardless if its to Philly or just for any 2nd round pick with no player coming back?
PS: Is Backlund ready to be a top 6 forward? I’m not sure. Remember Langkow has a hefty cap hit and Darryl is a big fan of his.
- ScottWe now have a quality backup goalie in Toskala. He got a raw deal in the centre of the universe, and it will come back to haunt old Burkie. Both goalies needed a boost to their confidence levels and now they will get it. Way to go Darryl!
PS: And remember, Toskala is unrestricted come the end of the season. His 4 mil cap hit is pro-rated with only 20 games to go…it’s not a bad pickup in my mind.
- curmudgeonI agree, just like this trade, Toskala should be reliable in a backup position. Just like with Joseph, that trust in a backup should help the team. Curtis should be great down the road, just needs a change.
PS: No question, Toskala is an upgrade on McElhinney. It will certainly help for the final 20 games this season.
- ScottVancouver trades Ryan Kesler to Team Latvia for an assistant coach, four bags of hockey tapes and the rights to Ivans Mastikulas’ jock strap.
PS: Tell Kelly I say hi.
- davidbackesCalgary Has Another Trade Coming – Stay Posted.
PS: Correct you were!
- RobDont’ get what Darryl is doing….loading up on ex-Leafs? They have no history or tradition of winning….I really don’t get it unless he knows something about all of them that no-one else does. Looks to me like a short post-season (if we get there). Just can’t see this crew winning long. I’d like it — but just can’t see it.
PS: He’s certainly made some curious moves today.
- Donhow many ex-leafs we want? i know curtis was not winning lot but bringing toskala? r u kidding? justin pogge would have been nice adition.
i can say we r done with goaltending trades now, who will ask for toskala?
PS: Toskala is staying put through the end of the season, he’s UFA at the end. Fact is, Calgary needed an upgrade on McElhinney. They have it now.
- MAHERDid they trade Backlund for Horcoff??
PS: They most certainly did not.
- SheldonHey Pat, I don’t think Backlund is ready to be a top 6, but the rumors were that Langkow might have been on his way out. Your right, Langkow is a Sutter guy, but then again, so was Phaneuf.
PS: Fair enough. I think Langkow could be traded in the offseason if they can find a taker.
- ScottI knew it was going down – Herd something from a friend who works at the dome saw someone carrying bags to car – sorry I couldn’t give names or anything.
But I called It 1:33PM – Board Time.
PS: Ha well done. Which deal are we talking about though?
- RobWow… ummmm I don’t know what to say… I didn’t think Sutter made trades just to make trades… but Sutter must have had some cash to burn on a guy like staios. And giving up a player and a pick…. you’d think that it would have been just one or the other….
PS: But does he have cash to burn? Staios is a 2.7 hit next year…and it’s not like they have a ton of flexibility anyway with the signings of Bourque and Stajan. Very strange.
- ScottHahah Sutter says a vetern defensemen who they could afford… What a joke… With all the salary issues with this team, you want to spend nearly 3 mill on an ageing 7th defensemen? Again… Way to get older and slower Sutter
PS: I gotta say, the fact that they bring in that salary and surrender a 3rd rounder is very odd in my books.
- ScottI have lot of faith in sutters but some of these deals made this year just does not make any sense at all.
you let go guys like aucoin and now spend 3mil for staios?? flames must be oldest team in nhl now.
PS: Yeah, they certainly didn’t get any younger trading Johnson, McElhinney and Boyd for 2 guys that are older.
- MAHERI agree, Staios will most likely be a great addition, just not for what we gave up and salary costs, including next year. If Derek Morris went for a 4th, how do we give up a 3rd?
PS: And I mean, Staios comes in as a number 6 guy right? That’s if B Sutter decides to rest Pardy.
- ScottOMG sutter is gripping the stick bad.If this is the best sutter can do why on earth is he a GM? Also i feel bad for Iggy playing with a bunch of 3rd liners for the rest of his hockey days(what a waste) Iggy will want out of calgary soon. and i dont see why he should stay do you pat?
PS: I certainly don’t think what’s assembled gives Iginla the best chance to succeed.
- kevinYah, i suppose that Staios will be a #6 guy. The highest paid #6 guy in the league… I just worry about salary for next year… This doesn’t solve any problems for this year or next.
PS: Yep, I don’t disagree man. You’ll have more than 6 million tied up in Sarich and Staios for next season.
- ScottThanks Pat, for heading up the Trade Deadline Blog. Following you and this blog has become part of my trade deadline tradition, keep up the great work!
PS: Thanks man! Too bad I couldn’t have some real blockbusters to put on here!
- ScottPat, it’s Viktor, no way is Langkow getting traded, at least not with Sutter in charge.
Glad McE/Boyd are gone, the johnson thing was kinda weird, don’t get twhy we had to throw a pick in that deal.
Have you heard Andy Delmore coming to Calgary (Abbotsford) for Riley Armstrong, trying to get confirmation of it somewhere.
Thanks
PS: As you now know, Delmore has been acquired by the team, so there you go, well done! I don’t think Langkow is the easiest player to trade, but I think if Sutter had a chance to, he would, I really do believe that. Wasn’t big on what Boyd was doing, and McElhinney just wasn’t getting it done.
- Johnny One GloveI was just wondering what the flames could get if Darryl decided to trade Langkow? He’s a big centreman but he’s already passed his prime. If Darryl were to trade Langkow, why wouldn’t he have done it today?
PS: Again, IF he had tried, maybe there were no takers.
- ConnorIt is exciting to hear Staios is now a Calgary Flame.
After hearing how thrilled he is to be a Calgary Flame, I am looking forward to watching his first game.
PS: We’ll see how he fits. He’s going to be a #6 defenceman, probably displacing Pardy. You can’t expect the guy to come in and make a huge impact, because of the role he’s going to play.
- Lindaman this reaks of all kinds of fail. i would’ve thought Daryl lea ned we need to build through the draft. why expend picks on people like Staios, sure he’s a decent player but we have more pressing matters. hell it doesn’t matter if we make the playoffs, we won’t make a run. i’ve lost faith in daryl, its too bad. Calgary should spend an extra 5 mil scouting, perhaps we’ll find something like Detroit has.
PS: It’s very peculiar that a team that has been so careful in the past now finds itself with a ton of forwards and no draft picks. Very, very odd.
