Season Series Sweep
Saturday, January 2nd, 2010
The Calgary Flames took a 3-1 win on Saturday night over the Toronto Maple Leafs, good for Calgary’s 4th straight win and good for the season sweep over the Toronto Maple Leafs, winning both games. Calgary scored goals 52 seconds apart in the 2nd period en route to the win, increasing the Flames record to 24-12-5 on the season. Toronto dropped to 14-19-9.
Calgary carried a lead into the third period for the 20th time this year, as the Flames have now officially passed the halfway mark of the season. It wasn’t the most engaging hockey game of all time, to say the least, but Calgary was clearly the better team and was full marks for the win. Even though they trailed 1-0 after 1 period of play, there was never any doubt that Toronto was going to pull away with this one. Miikka Kiprusoff played well enough in net, making big saves when the Leafs broke through, and the newly formed top line paced the offence.
Daymond Langkow, Jarome Iginla and Curtis Glencross combined for 8 points on this night, playing their 4th game on a line together. Glencross scored the winner and added an empty netter, while Iginla and Langkow both finished with 3 points. For Glencross, it was his first multi-goal game of the season…he’s now scored in 2 straight games after going 10 games in a row without notching one.
Kudos to the Flames penalty kill, as they continue to be dynamite…and they also continue to climb towards the top of the league statistically. On this night, they killed off all 4 Leafs powerplays (easily, at that) and have been perfect in their last 3 games. On this night, they made sure the Leafs didn’t take a 2-0 lead, as Toronto went to the PP right after opening the scoring on Jason Blake’s 10th of the season. Calgary has been perfect their last 3 games (10 for 10) on the penalty kill; they’ve allowed just 1 goal in their last 30 shorthanded situations over 9 games.
