So, the Calgary Flames threw 35+ shots on net for a 3rd straight game…but for a second straight game, the Flames were unable to earn the 2 points. In fact, on Wednesday, Calgary wasn’t able to earn any points as they fell 3-1 to the Pittsburgh Penguins in their only meeting with the defending Cup champs this year. Calgary drops to 26-15-6 while Pittsburgh improves to 29-18-1.
Calgary lacked finish on Wednesday, as they fired 38 shots on the Pittsburgh net and were well into the double digits when it came to scoring chances. But they weren’t able to convert upon their scoring chances, and they weren’t able to draw even with Pittsburgh once Sergei Gonchar scored on the PP. From a Pittsburgh perspective, give them credit…they’ll bite you when you let up. Calgary let up twice in this game in my eyes, and both times they found the puck in the back of their net. Plus, Sidney Crosby made a pretty dazzling goal happen all by himself.
Here’s the thing…Brent Sutter stressed following this game that the Flames can’t stray from what they’re doing. Was he disappointed that Calgary only scored the 1 goal? Yes. But he said you have to be very careful in walking the line of not scoring enough and trying to score too much. If the Flames stick to their gameplan and don’t stray away from it, they’re going to be just fine. And that’s what the Head Coach was stressing following Wednesday’s game.
Good news in the fact that Calgary snapped a 5 game goal-less streak on the powerplay. Mark Giordano scored in the 2nd period on a powerplay that looked all-world. Pittsburgh was running around and Calgary moved the puck so well that it was almost a guarantee they were going to score. Calgary finished 1 for 5 on the PP, but maybe that goal on the man advantage can get things back on track…they were 0 for 16 prior to the Giordano marker.
Calgary plays Nashville for the final time on Friday, gametime is 7. Follow me on Twitter at www.twitter.com/Steinberg960.

I would be curious how the Coach believes they are fine?
Over the last 20 games they have won once when they let in more than one goal.
Flames are avg’g an hair above 2 goals for per game over the last 25 games.
