I want to point your attention to a couple of videos that have taken UFC 94′s “Grease Gate” controversy to a whole new, and completely stupid level.  Apparently BJ Penn just can’t let it go, and is out to prove that his one-sided loss to Georges St. Pierre was not his fault.  Whatever.

Here is the first of the videos, the initial shot across the bow if you will from “The Prodigy” BJ Penn…http://www.mmalinker.com/xExternal.php?vidid=13061In this video, which he posted on his website BJPenn.com, it alleges not just that St. Pierre cheated in his fight at UFC 94, but alleges that this was not a 1 time thing.  Of course, the background on this story is as follows: GSP creamed BJ in their superfight at UFC 94, BJ then alleged Georges had used vaseline illegally on his back, blaming that for his lack of any fight back.  He filed a complaint, and nothing came of it, while Georges happily accepted a rematch.

Here’s the main problem I have with this.  In the span of around 3 months, BJ Penn has gone from newly matured, focused fighter to a petty, sore loser to a delusional, vindictive moron.  Focusing and bitching about this 1 singular fight is one thing, however calling into question the morals and ethics of one of the most accomplished fighters of all time is another thing.  I know it’s hard for Penn to believe that someone could be THAT good so consistently, but it’s pretty easy…unlike Penn, GSP has trained his entire life for this and hasn’t been a soft, doughy guy for a good majority of his career getting by on sheer talent alone.

Look it, the worst part about this is that BJ Penn has completely soiled his reputation.  How many people, aside from fans of Penn, are going to remember this clown as a guy who did anything BUT whine after a loss to a better fighter?  I’ll say the same thing I did after this first surfaced…vaseline did NOT have anything to do with Penn getting outdone while standing, being taken down at will, and having his hands totally controlled by Penn.  Plain and simple, I still think this argument has little to no validity.Thankfully, we have a response from Georges…and it’s not some petty response.  It’s actually pretty funny…

Thank goodness we have SOMEONE who is treating this as it should be…as a complete joke.  My hope is that this will finally go away, because it makes the sport look like pro wrestling…a complete soap opera.  But I know it WON’T go away, because the driving force behind this apparently hasn’t changed like we thought he had.

    P Stein,

I really hope that BJ gets his rematch. Nothing in the world would make me happier than seeing Penn get creamed a second time by GSP. BJ has always managed to find some excuse for every loss he’s had, and it’s putting a black mark on the sport as far as I’m concerned.

C’mon Baby Jay, you think a little bit of vasoline explains the fact that you got your ass totally beat down? That fight was so one-sided, it looked like Fedor versus Junie Browning. BJ has been pretty used to being a big fish in the small pond that is the lightweight division. Moving up to 170, he’s failing to realize that now he’s swimming with the sharks. Looks to me like BJ has a real bad case of short man syndrome and can’t handle the fact that he is, and always will be a very good lightweight fighter.

Training for a fight does not entail downing a steady diet of Kahnua burgers, going to Mexico on vacation a couple of weeks before the fight, and eating potato chips off your chest while watching Seinfeld. You’re still a champion, start acting like one.

PS: That’s the most overlooked part of all this, is that he’s still got a fight to prepare for! Penn needs to prepare for his fight with Kenny Florian, because KenFlo is a guy that can beat you on the best of days. If BJ comes in pre-occupied and not prepared, Florian could end up being the new champ. No question BJ would have lost that fight, vaseline or no vaseline. In watching his video, he comes off bad and he ends up making fighters like Matt Hughes look like idiots as well. Not like Hughes didn’t look like an idiot most of the time anyway.

If Penn doesn’t let this go, he’s going to get another beat down from Florian. I believe that if Penn can beat Florian, the UFC will give him another shot at GSP, but won’t if he loses. Florian is not a fighter to be taken lightly and if Penn doesn’t get focused he will lose his belt AND his rematch with GSP.

PS: I agree 100% with you Darren. If BJ mans up and coms ot fight against Florian, and beats a very good fighter, I think he gets a rematch with GSP. However, if he comes in and overlooks Kenny and loses his belt, bye bye rematch. I’m hoping that KenFlo punks him, because I’ve had just about enough of BJ.

Kenny has been so scary as of late. The dude just seems to get better and better every fight. I had to laugh when I watched the old Ultimate Fighter re-runs when Kenny fought Chris Leben. Kenny looked so overwhelmed (granted he was fighting a bigger man) but still managed to get that elbow off and end Leben’s dream. The scary thing is, now it’s KenFlo who dictates the pace of fights. I think most of us forget just how good the guys Jiu-Jitsu really is because he seems to put guys away before he ever has a chance to use it. A Jiu Jitsu black-belt who is always on the offensive? Crazy!

PS: Florian is one of my favorite fighters to watch, because you’re right, he is always dictating the pace. What I really like though is how he always improves, each and every fight, he’s getting better!
