Your comments encouraged on this topic, of course! I’m not surprised at Sean Avery’s “sloppy seconds” comments today. I’m not surprised that he said it, I’m not surprised in the manner in which he said them, I’m not surprised the reaction he has gotten, and hell, I’m not even surprised he got suspended. And that kind of sums up Sean Avery the last 6 months or so…predictable, boring, and uninspired.
Seriously, the guy is no longer what he’s striving to be. Some may say that because I’m writing this blog, that I’m “playing right into his hands” and “he must be doing his job if you’re talking about it.” To which I say bullsh*t. I’m only talking about the guy now because he’s such a parody of himself, a parody of guys like Hull, Roenick, Shaq, and Taylor.
He’s that class clown who was funny in grade 6, but a complete loser in Junior High. He’s the comedian who was funny when he was fresh, but eventually fresh loses its lustre if it doesn’t change (Dane Cook anyone?). He’s the media whoring hotel-heiress who records grainy sex tapes when people stop talking about her. And then releases ANOTHER sex tape later on, just so people don’t forget.
And what all those people have in common? You just roll your eyes, mutter under your breath, and then just wonder what is wrong with them. And the more and more these people proliferate their sad act, the more and more useless and irrelevant they become. There is a term coined in wrestling circles…it’s called “X Pac Heat”. It refers to a wrestler getting negative feedback from fans. Not because the wrestler is doing his job and playing the bad guy well. That’s a good thing, however, boring people to death while being constantly exposed is.
Hence Sean Avery. From calling Martin Brodeur fatso, to slagging on Jarome Iginla, and now taking a shot at Dion Phaneuf and his significant other. He’s as bad as any other boring-ass, by-the-numbers NHL interview. The same way you’re sick of “give her a %110″ or “one game at a time” or “our backs are against the walls”, you’re sick of this ass clown.
They call the last player taken in the NFL Draft Mr. Irrelevant. They have to change that. Sean Avery just took that moniker.

HA HA Pat… awesome! I agree 110%
PS: Ha, I didn’t catch you being all clever there right away. I always knew you were smarter than me;)
- JolenePat, you took the words right out of my mouth. Well said!
PS: And Matt, I really think that me and you aren’t the only ones that think this way. The fact that so many people are so bored by this guy will hopefully mean he’ll give us all a break. But I won’t hold my breath.
- Matt CampbellAVERY IS AN IDIOT!!! GOOD ON THE NHL FOR TAKING ACTION.
PS: And what’s interesting is that Avery won’t be meeting with NHL Disciplinarian Colin Campbell. Instead, he’ll be meeting with Commissioner Gary Bettman himself. Looks like Dad is coming home from a business trip to lay down the law.
- AL FORTINII agree with the team for suspending him for perhaps conduct unbecomming but does the league use the same rationale!? Last time Ichecked we weren’t communist
PS: It’s certainly an interesting precedent to set for the NHL. Had the team suspended him, I wouldn’t have batted an eye, but the league suspending him certainly shows that they don’t appreciate his antics one bit.
- SeanAwesome Pat!!!
PS: Hey, thank Avery for giving us the fodder for this! Actually don’t, maybe now that he’s suspended, he won’t bore us to death anymore.
- TyroneOHHHH Patrick, I think you are missing the sheer brilliance of this comment. Sloppy Seconds? that is the best line I’ve ever heard an NHL player ever lay down. I understand he’s been blowing this season, and his team is even worse, but the guy makes life interesting. I will be paying big bucks to watch the next game he plays against these guys because, straight up, dude is hillarious.
I want more dudes to say and/or rehearse funny ass sh*t like this dude does.
PS: You know, normally, I’d be agree with you 100%. In fact, I even laughed at it when I first heard it. BUT I’d much rather this come from a dude who doesn’t do it all the time. You know? But because Avery always is saying off-colour things (and I’m a fan of off-colour), it loses it’s funniness and becomes boring, that’s all I’m saying.
- TimBy no means am I saying what he said was appropriate. I think it definitely was classless and merited a suspension. But when I saw the clip I laughed outloud and just said ‘F***ing beautiful’. He’s an absolute abomination to the NHL but you don’t think that comment isn’t going to throw Dion off next time they play – if not at least for a few shifts?! Wow. When they did the post-game with Dion it was pretty darn obvious he was biting his tongue. First thing he’s going to do next time these teams meet is look for Avery. And I for one, like Tim, will be eagerly anticipating this moment.
PS: To me, if I was Dion, I wouldn’t be offended at all. Avery is so by the numbers now, and it’s kind of like “that’s the best you can do?” Yeah he said it in the media, but Dion’s got scoreboard…hot girlfriend, more money, more skill, and brighter NHL future. I’m sure Dion was a little pissed, but to respond to your comment, I disagree. I don’t think it throws him off his game at all if and when he meets Avery again.
